RESUMO

Information on combining ability and reciprocal effects (REC) facilitates efficient utilization of genetic materials in a breeding program. This study was conducted (at the CSIR-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute, Ghana) to determine general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA), heritability, genetic advance, GCA, and SCA effects as well as the relationship between parents per se performance and progenies for yield components and maturity traits in cowpea. The test populations were derived using a 5 × 5 complete diallel cross of parents with different yield attributes and maturity durations. The results indicated that GCA was predominant for number of days to 90% pod maturity, plant height at maturity, and hundred-seed weight. This showed that genes with additive effects conditioned these traits. Padi-Tuya, Songotra, and IT86D-610 were identified as good general combiners for grain yield, while Sanzi-Nya was identified as a general combiner for developing extra-early duration cowpea varieties. Crosses Songotra × Sanzi-Nya, SARC-1-57-2 × IT86D-610, Songotra × SARC-1-57-2, and Padi-Tuya × Songotra were identified as good specific combiners for days to 50% flowering, pod length, pods per plant, pod yield, grain yield, and seeds per pod. The findings from this study provide useful information on the inheritance of early maturity and yield traits in cowpea. This can be exploited to develop high yielding and early maturing cowpea varieties as climate smart strategy to mitigate climate change via breeding methods such as pedigree selection and marker assisted backcrossing (MABC). Pedigree selection method is being used to develop varieties from the hybrid with high and significant SCA for grain yield, whereas the development of extra-early duration varieties via MABC with Sanzi-Nya (general combiner for earliness traits) as a donor parent is ongoing.

Development of maize hybrids that possess tolerant genes to low soil nitrogen is critical for long-term maize production in areas with low soil fertility. In this study, estimates for combining ability effects for grain yield and secondary traits of selected inbred lines, identify potential parents for hybrid development and yield potential of the crosses under sub-optimal and optimal N environments. One hundred hybrids were evaluated under sub-optimal and optimal N environments for two years. The experimental layout was a 10 × 10 alpha lattice design with two replications for two experiments. The results obtained showed that, the genotypes evaluated varied for grain yield and the characters measured under sub-optimal and optimal N conditions. Grain yield reduction due to N stress was 40.9%. General and specific combining ability (GCA) and (SCA) effects for mean squares varied for grain yield demonstrating the importance of additive and non-additive genetic effects for the hybrids evaluated under the study conditions. Even though significant variations were detected for GCA and SCA, GCA which is the additive gene action component mainly controlled the heritage of grain yield under both conditions. Inbred line 15 was identified as the superior parent with positive and significant GCA for grain yield under sub-optimal N. Genotypic correlation studies displayed that grain yield was positively correlated with ears per plant under sub-optimal N and was also positively associated with anthesis-silking interval under high N. The hybrids 52, 75, 81 and 37 were identified to be significantly superior in terms of grain yield, ASI and EPP under the two-contrasting conditions. The results suggest that, there is a need for development of low N tolerant inbred lines and hybrids for production under soils with low N status in the Guinea savanna of Ghana for high grain yield to be realised.

Early Leaf Spot (ELS) caused by the fungus Passalora arachidicola and Late Leaf Spot (LLS) also caused by the fungus Nothopassalora personata, are the two major groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) destructive diseases in Ghana. Accurate phenotyping and genotyping to develop groundnut genotypes resistant to Leaf Spot Diseases (LSD) and to increase groundnut production is critically important in Western Africa. Two experiments were conducted at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Savanna Agricultural Research Institute located in Nyankpala, Ghana to explore the effectiveness of using RGB-image method as a high-throughput phenotyping tool to assess groundnut LSD and to estimate yield components. Replicated plots arranged in a rectangular alpha lattice design were conducted during the 2020 growing season using a set of 60 genotypes as the training population and 192 genotypes for validation. Indirect selection models were developed using Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color space indices. Data was collected on conventional LSD ratings, RGB imaging, pod weight per plant and number of pods per plant. Data was analyzed using a mixed linear model with R statistical software version 4.0.2. The results showed differences among the genotypes for the traits evaluated. The RGB-image method traits exhibited comparable or better broad sense heritability to the conventionally measured traits. Significant correlation existed between the RGB-image method traits and the conventionally measured traits. Genotypes 73-33, Gha-GAF 1723, Zam-ICGV-SM 07599, and Oug-ICGV 90099 were among the most resistant genotypes to ELS and LLS, and they represent suitable sources of resistance to LSD for the groundnut breeding programs in Western Africa.

In this study, the differential rankings of 36 groundnut genotypes under varying environmental conditions were studied at various levels of phenotype. Locations that are generally accepted by the crop- and soil-based research community to represent the entire Guinea and Sudan Savanna agro-ecological zones in Ghana were characterized, this time using a crop. The characterization was done based on four farmer-preferred traits (early and late leaf spot disease ratings, and haulm and pod yields) using three models (i.e., AMMI, GGE, and Finlay-Wilkinson regression). These models were used to capture specific levels of phenotype, namely, genotype-by-environment interaction (GE), genotype main effect plus GE (G+GE), and environment and genotype main effects plus GE (E+G+GE), respectively. The effect of three major environmental covariables was also determined using factorial regression. Location main effect was found to be highly significant (p < 0.001), confirming its importance in cultivar placement. However, unlike genotypes where the best is usually adjudged through statistical ranking, locations are judged against a benchmark, particularly when phenotyping for disease severity. It was also found that the locations represent one complex mega-environment, justifying the need to test new technologies, including genotypes in all of them before they can be approved for adoption nationally. Again, depending on the phenotypic level considered, genotypic rankings may change, causing environmental groupings to change. For instance, all locations clustered to form one group in 2017 for early and late leaf spot diseases and pod yield when GE was considered, but the groupings changed when G+GE was considered for the same traits in the same year. As a result, assessing genotypic performance at the various levels to arrive at a consensus decision is suggested. Genotypes ICGV-IS 141120 and ICGV-IS 13937 were found to be the best performing.

Genetic diversity is fundamentally important in crop improvement and provides plants with the capacity to meet the demands of changing environments. This work was carried out to assess the diversity and the extent of genetic relatedness among a number of assembled cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) accessions. We conducted a microsatellite marker analysis of 89 cassava accessions collected from Ghanaian and exotic sources. These accessions were assayed using 35 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. A total of 167 alleles were detected from 35 polymorphic markers with an average of 4.77 alleles per locus. High allelic frequency was detected across the accessions, ranging from 0.32 to 0.99 with an average of 0.62 per marker. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.03 - 0.97 across the accessions. Polymorphism information content (PIC) ranged from 0.03 to 0.78 with a mean of 0.45, indicating high level of polymorphism across the accessions. Comparatively, higher number of alleles, gene diversity and observed heterozygosity were detected among the local accessions compared with the exotic accessions indicating rich genetic diversity among them. Population structure analysis based on STRUCTURE identified two subpopulations and a large number of admixtures. Cluster analysis based on the neighbour joining algorithim further separated the collection into seven sub-groupings irrespective of geographical origin. This indicates the possible sharing of common genomic regions occurring across the accessions. High allelic frequency differences and levels of heterozygosity were observed among the germplasm. These findings indicated significant genetic variability in the germplasm to warrant selection.
