AIMS: This study aims to demonstrate the potential of the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Pediococcus pentosaceus LBM18 against the mycotoxin-producing Alternaria alternata TEF-1A and highlight its application as an effective grain silage inoculant to control mycotoxin contamination. METHODS AND RESULTS: The antifungal properties of Ped. pentosaceus lyophilized (PPL) were assessed by evaluating its effect on A. alternata TEF-1A grown in a corn silage-based medium, which included morphological changes by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations, growth rate, conidia production assays, and inhibition of Tenuazonic acid (TeA) production by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-MS/MS) analyses. Furthermore, TeA biosynthesis was monitored for changes at the molecular level by PKS gene expression. The growth and sporulation processes of A. alternata TEF-1A were affected by Ped. pentosaceus LBM18 in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, a significant inhibition of TeA production (74.3%) and the transcription level of the PKS gene (42.9%) was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Ped. pentosaceus is one of the promising LAB to be applied as an inoculant for corn silage preservation, aiming to inhibit mycotoxigenic fungi growth and their mycotoxin production. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Ped. pentosaceus could be used as an inoculant to reduce fungal and mycotoxins contamination in grain silage production.

The mdx mouse is an experimental model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscular degeneration which affects the oral cavity musculature, and promotes difficulty in swallowing. This study aimed to describe morphological, structural, and ultrastructural changes in the tongue mucosa and musculature of mdx mice. Forty six-month-old mice were divided into two groups: Control C57bl/10 (n = 20) and mdx C57bl/10mdx (n = 20). The tongue was dissected and analyzed with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Our results showed conical and triangular filiform, fungiform, foliate, and vallate papillae, and their connective tissue cores. The epithelium layers identified were corneum, granulosum, spinosum, and basale. The mdx group had a thicker epithelium. Lamina propria was composed of reddish and greenish collagen. In mdx, collagen was present in the musculature of the tongue's body and in the muscular tissue between mucous and serous glands of the caudal region. Musculature was also characterized by a shorter length of sarcoplasmic invaginations, myocytolysis in mitochondrial groupings, and inflammatory focus. In conclusion, the tongue of 6-month-old mdx mice had morphology, structure, and ultrastructure revealed, showing higher wear of filiform papillae indirect reflex from the muscular degeneration process.

BACKGROUND: Limited information is available on pneumococcal colonization among adults. We studied pneumococcal carriage dynamics in healthy adults using high-sensitivity approaches. METHODS: Eighty-seven adults (25-50 years old) were followed for 6 months in Portugal. Nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and saliva samples were obtained monthly; pneumococcal carriers were also sampled weekly. Carriage was investigated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (targeting lytA and piaB) and culture. Positive samples were serotyped. RESULTS: Approximately 20% of the adults were intermittent carriers; 10% were persistent carriers (>4 months). Pneumococcal acquisition and clearance rates were 16.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 11.2-24.2) and 95.9 (95% CI, 62.3-145.0) cases/1000 person-weeks, respectively. Living with children increased pneumococcal acquisition (hazard ratio, 9.7 [95% CI, 2.6-20.5]; P < .001). Median duration of carriage was 7 weeks and did not depend on regular contact with children. CONCLUSIONS: The pneumococcal carrier state in healthy adults is more dynamic than generally assumed: Acquisition is frequent and duration of carriage is often long. This suggests that some adults may act as reservoirs of pneumococci and hence, depending on the social structure of a community, the magnitude of herd effects potentially attainable through children vaccination may vary. These findings are important when designing strategies to prevent pneumococcal disease in adults.

The palate is a fundamental region in food swallowing and presents different adaptations in species. This research aimed to describe structural and ultrastructural characteristics of the palatine epithelium and the connective tissue cores (CTCs) of ten red-rumped agoutis (Dasyprocta leporina­Linnaeus, 1758) using macroscopic, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. We found nine palatine ridges in the diastema and hard palate, and a smooth surface in the soft palate. Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium with projections of lamina propria and soft palate had gland clusters. Epithelial removal revealed CTCs with a conical shape with high density in the hard palate and the sides of the soft palate. Near the CTCs were nerve fibers in the hard palate, and the soft palate had muscular tissue below the gland clusters. The structural and ultrastructural characteristics enable stability of the hard palate and fixation to the soft palate sides, while the soft palate center has greater mobility thus assisting in food swallowing. We concluded that structural characteristics are similar to other mammals, although the morphology of agouti's palate differs in the amount and disposition of palatine ridges, and the conical CTC's morphology.

OBJECTIVE: Analyzing the ergonomics and usability criteria of the Computerized Nursing Process based on the International Classification for Nursing Practice in the Intensive Care Unit according to International Organization for Standardization(ISO). METHOD: A quantitative, quasi-experimental, before-and-after study with a sample of 16 participants performed in an Intensive Care Unit. Data collection was performed through the application of five simulated clinical cases and an evaluation instrument. Data analysis was performed by descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: The organization, content and technical criteria were considered "excellent", and the interface criteria were considered "very good", obtaining means of 4.54, 4.60, 4.64 and 4.39, respectively. The analyzed standards obtained means above 4.0, being considered "very good" by the participants. CONCLUSION: The Computerized Nursing Processmet ergonomic and usability standards according to the standards set by ISO. This technology supports nurses' clinical decision-making by providing complete and up-to-date content for Nursing practice in the Intensive Care Unit. OBJETIVO: Analisar os critérios de ergonomia e usabilidade do Processo de Enfermagem Informatizado a partir da Classificação Internacional para as Práticas de Enfermagem, em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, de acordo com os padrões da InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO). MÉTODO: Pesquisa quantitativa, quase-experimental do tipo antes e depois, com uma amostra de 16 participantes, realizada em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. Coleta de dados realizada por meio da aplicação de cinco casos clínicos simulados e instrumento de avaliação. A análise dos dados foi realizada pela estatística descritiva e inferencial. RESULTADOS: Os critérios organização, conteúdo e técnico foram considerados "excelentes", e o critério interface "muito bom", obtendo médias 4,54, 4,60, 4,64 e 4,39, respectivamente. Os padrões analisados obtiveram médias acima de 4,0, sendo considerados "muito bons" pelos participantes. CONCLUSÃO: O Processo de Enfermagem Informatizado possui padrões ergonômicos e de usabilidade de acordo com os padrões estabelecidos pela ISO. Esta tecnologia apoia a decisão clínica do enfermeiro fornecendo conteúdo completo e atualizado para a prática de Enfermagem em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the usability of Computerized Nursing Process (CNP) from the ICNP(®) 1.0 in Intensive Care Units in accordance with the criteria established by the standards of the International Organization for Standardization and the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards of systems. METHOD: This is a before-and-after semi-experimental quantitative study, with a sample of 34 participants (nurses, professors and systems programmers), carried out in three Intensive Care Units. RESULTS: The evaluated criteria (use, content and interface) showed that CNP has usability criteria, as it integrates a logical data structure, clinical assessment, diagnostics and nursing interventions. CONCLUSION: The CNP is a source of information and knowledge that provide nurses with new ways of learning in intensive care, for it is a place that provides complete, comprehensive, and detailed content, supported by current and relevant data and scientific research information for Nursing practices.

Pathological nociception arising from peripheral nerve injury impacts quality of life. Current therapeutics are generally ineffective. However, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has shown promise in addressing this issue. We aimed to assess the potential anti-allodynic effects of 2 p.m. protocols, each applied transcutaneously over the peripheral nerve injury. In addition to evaluating nociceptive behavior, we also conducted morphological analysis using electron microscopy (EM) to investigate potential ultrastructural changes at the cellular level. We sought to determine, using the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model, whether our parameters could alleviate established allodynia and/or dampen allodynia development. Adult male and female rats with CCI or sham were treated with PBMT (850-nm wavelength) for 2 min, 3 times a week over three or four weeks across three studies, where PBMT began either before or after CCI. Allodynia was assessed prior to surgery and across weeks and, at the conclusion of the third study, sciatic nerve was processed for EM and histomorphometrically evaluated. The results showed that PBMT before versus after CCI injury yielded similar behaviors, effectively decreasing allodynia. Interestingly, these positive effects of PBMT do not appear to be accounted by protection of the sciatic injury site, based on EM. CCI reliably decreased axon size and the number of myelinated axons present in both PBMT and control groups. While PBMT reduced the number of C-fibers in CCI samples, no improvement in any measure was observed in response to PBMT.

Listeria monocytogenes is a human opportunistic foodborne pathogen that produces life-threatening infections with a high mortality rate. The control of Listeria in the food production environment and effective clinical management of human listeriosis are challenging due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. Hence we evaluate the in vitro anti-Listeria activity of two synthetic cruzioseptins reproducing their natural sequences CZS-9, and CZS-12, and one engineered sequence based on CZS-1, named [K4K15]CZS-1. The assessment of the in vitro potential of cruzioseptins, highlighted the promising antibacterial effect of [K4K15]CZS-1 in very low concentrations (0.91 µM) and its thermal stability at high-temperature conditions, is compatible with the food industry. Microscopic and metabolomic analyses suggest cruzioseptin induces anti-Listeria bioactivity through membrane disruption and changes in the intracellular metabolome. We also report that [K4K15]CZS-1 is not resistant to peptidases/proteases emphasizing a key advantage for their use as a food preservative. However, there is a need for further structural and functional optimisations for the potential clinical application as an antibiotic. In conclusion, [K4K15]CZS-1 stand out as membrane-active peptides with the ability to induce shifts in the bacteria metabolome and inspire the development of strategies for the prevention of L. monocytogenes emergence and dissemination.

Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage studies are crucial to monitor changes induced by use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and inform vaccination policies. In this cross-sectional study, we examined changes within the pneumococcal population following introduction of PCV13 in 2015 in the National Immunization Program (NIP), in Portugal. In 2018-2020 (NIP-PCV13), we obtained 1450 nasopharyngeal samples from children ≤6 years attending day-care. We assessed serotypes, antimicrobial resistance, and genotypes (MLST and GPSC) and compared findings with earlier periods: 2009-2010 (pre-PCV13), 2011-2012 (early-PCV13), and 2015-2016 (late-PCV13). Pneumococcal carriage prevalence remained stable at 60.2 %. Carriage of PCV13 serotypes was 10.7 %, markedly reduced compared to pre-PCV13 period (47.6 %). The most prevalent PCV13 serotypes were 19F, 3, and 19A all showing a significant decreasing trend compared to the pre-PCV13 period (from 7.1 % to 4.7 %, 10.1 % to 1.8 %, and 14.1 % to 1.8 %, respectively), a notable observation given the described limited effectiveness of PCV13 against serotype 3. Non-vaccinated children and children aged 4-6 years were more likely to carry PCV13 serotypes (2.5-fold, 95 %CI [1.1-5.6], and 2.9-fold, 95 %CI [1.3-6.8], respectively). The most prevalent non-PCV13 serotypes were 15B/C, 11A, 23B, 23A, and NT, collectively accounting for 51.9 % of all isolates. In total, 30.5 % of all pneumococci were potentially covered by PCV20. Resistance to penicillin (low-level) and macrolides increased significantly, from 9.3 % and 13.4 %, respectively, in the late-PCV13 period, to approximately 20 % each, mostly due to lineages expressing non-PCV13 serotypes, nearing pre-PCV13 levels. An expansion of lineages traditionally associated with PCV13 serotypes, like CC156-GPSC6 (serotype 14) and CC193-GPSC11 (serotype 19F), but now predominantly expressing non-PCV13 serotypes (11A, 15B/C, and 24F for GPSC6; and 15A and 21 for GPSC11) was noted. These findings indicate that the pneumococcal population is adapting to the pressures conferred by PCV13 and antimicrobial use and indicate the need to maintain close surveillance.

The agouti (Dasyprocta aguti Linnaeus, 1766) is a wild rodent belonging to the family Dasyproctidae that is found throughout Brazil and feeds on fruits and seeds. The aim of the present study was to describe the following features of the tongue of agouti: its morphological structures, the three-dimensional characteristics of the lingual papillae surface, the connective tissue cores (CTCs) and the epithelial cell ultrastructure. Four types of papillae were observed on the dorsal surface of the tongue with a triangular shape: filiform, fungiform, foliate and vallate. Filiform papillae were distributed throughout the tongue surface, and removal of the epithelial surface revealed conical CTCs and multifilaments. Fungiform papillae were observed in the rostral and middle regions, whereas foliate papillae developed in pairs on the lateral margin of the caudal region. Removal of the epithelium in these regions revealed CTCs with parallel laminar conformation. Vallate papillae were arranged in a V-shape in the caudal region, and their CTCs ranged in shape from elongate to ovoid. The ultrastructural components of the dorsal epithelium were the basal, spinous, granular and keratinised layers. A broad area with cytoplasmic projections was identified in the interface region between the lamina propria and the basal layer. Flattened cells with intermediate filaments were observed in the transitional region between spinous and granular layers. The keratinised layer was composed of superimposed epithelial cells where desmosomes and cell-surface microridges were observed. These structural features, including the three-dimensional aspects of the lingual papillae, the CTCs and the epithelial ultrastructure, indicate that when compared with other animals, particularly other rodent species, the morphological features of the tongue of agouti are relatively well developed, especially regarding foliate and vallate papillae.

It is useful to test ecotoxicity and genotoxicity endpoints in the environmental impact assessment. Here, we compare and discuss ecotoxicity and genotoxicity effects in organisms in response to exposure to arsenate (As V) in solution. Eco(geno)toxicity responses in Aliivibrio fischeri, Lytechinus variegatus, Daphnia magna, Skeletonema costatum and Vicia faba were analyzed by assessing different endpoints: biomass growth, peroxidase activity, mitotic index, micronucleus frequency, and lethality in accordance with the international protocols. Quantitative sensitivity relationships (QSR) between these endpoints were established in order to rank endpoint sensitivity. The results for the QSR values based on the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) ratios varied from 2 (for ratio of root peroxidase activity to leaf peroxidase activity) to 2286 (for ratio of higher plant biomass growth to root peroxidase activity). The QSR values allowed the following sensitivity ranking to be established: higher plant enzymatic activity>daphnids≈echinoderms>bacteria≈algae>higher plant biomass growth. The LOEC values for the mitotic index and micronucleus frequency (LOEC=0.25mgAsL(-1)) were similar to the lowest LOEC values observed in aquatic organisms. This approach to the QSR of different endpoints could form the basis for monitoring and predicting early effects of pollutants before they give rise to significant changes in natural community structures.

RESUMO

The Nursing Process is a care technology that guides the sequence of clinical reasoning and improves the quality of care. This article reports the development of a Computerized Nursing Process (CNP) for the Intensive Care Unit. The study was conducted in three main steps: discussion and understanding of the International Organization for Standard 18104; theoretical expertise regarding the ICNP® 1.0; and the association of information with nursing diagnoses and interventions. The knowledge base was organized according to the ICNP® Version 1.0. The result was a restructuring of the CNP from the association of clinical evaluations to diagnosis and interventions that allow documentation of the clinical practice of nursing and provide support for decision-making. The methodological steps employed permitted the creation of an association between the clinical evaluation, diagnoses, interventions and results of the ICNP ® 1.0 with ISO 18104.

Streptococcus pneumoniae causes significant morbidity and mortality among older adults. Detection of pneumococcal carriage is an accepted endpoint in pneumococcal conjugate vaccine studies. However, low sensitivity of culture-based approaches and nasopharyngeal samples have hampered adult S. pneumoniae carriage studies in the past. In contrast, detection of adult S. pneumoniae carriers with qPCR-based approaches can achieve high sensitivity and specificity and qPCR-based testing of oral samples improves accuracy of adult carriage detection. In this Viewpoint we outline a strategy for accurate qPCR-based testing. We recommend a dual-target approach for S. pneumoniae qPCR detection as no genetic target is universally present among or solely unique to it. Furthermore, we advise the evaluation of concordance among quantified qPCR targets to improve the accuracy of S. pneumoniae testing and qPCR-based serotyping. We do not recommend omission of qPCR-based oral sample testing as it will likely result in an underestimation of true adult carrier rates.

BACKGROUND: The microbiota of the upper respiratory tract is increasingly recognized as a gatekeeper of respiratory health. Despite this, the microbiota of healthy adults remains understudied. To address this gap, we investigated the composition of the nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal microbiota of healthy adults, focusing on the effect of Streptococcus pneumoniae carriage, smoking habits, and contact with children. RESULTS: Differential abundance analysis indicated that the microbiota of the oropharynx was significantly different from that of the nasopharynx (P < 0.001) and highly discriminated by a balance between the classes Negativicutes and Bacilli (AUC of 0.979). Moreover, the oropharynx was associated with a more homogeneous microbiota across individuals, with just two vs. five clusters identified in the nasopharynx. We observed a shift in the nasopharyngeal microbiota of carriers vs. noncarriers with an increased relative abundance of Streptococcus, which summed up to 30% vs. 10% in noncarriers and was not mirrored in the oropharynx. The oropharyngeal microbiota of smokers had a lower diversity than the microbiota of nonsmokers, while no differences were observed in the nasopharyngeal microbiota. In particular, the microbiota of smokers, compared with nonsmokers, was enriched (on average 16-fold) in potential pathogenic taxa involved in periodontal diseases of the genera Bacillus and Burkholderia previously identified in metagenomic studies of cigarettes. The microbiota of adults with contact with children resembled the microbiota of children. Specifically, the nasopharyngeal microbiota of these adults had, on average, an eightfold increase in relative abundance in Streptococcus sp., Moraxella catarrhalis, and Haemophilus influenzae, pathobionts known to colonize the children's upper respiratory tract, and a fourfold decrease in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus lugdunensis. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that, in adults, the presence of S. pneumoniae in the nasopharynx is associated with a shift in the microbiota and dominance of the Streptococcus genus. Furthermore, we observed that smoking habits are associated with an increase in bacterial genera commonly linked to periodontal diseases. Interestingly, our research also revealed that adults who have regular contact with children have a microbiota enriched in pathobionts frequently carried by children. These findings collectively contribute to a deeper understanding of how various factors influence the upper respiratory tract microbiota in adults. Video Abstract.

The present study offers detailed insights into the antifungal and anti-mycotoxigenic potential of a biofilm forming lactic acid bacterium (Pediococcus pentosaceus) against one atoxigenic (Aspergillus flavus) and two toxigenic (Aspergillus nomius and Fusarium verticillioides) fungal strains. The antifungal effect of P. pentosaceus LBM18 strain was initially investigated through comparative analysis of fungi physiology by macroscopic visual evaluations and scanning electron microscopy examinations. The effects over fungal growth rate and asexual sporulation were additionally accessed. Furthermore, analytical evaluations of mycotoxin production were carried out by HPLC-MS/MS to provide insights on the bacterial anti-mycotoxigenic activity over fungal production of the aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2 as well as fumonisins B1 and B2. Finally, reverse transcription quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) analysis was employed at the most effective bacterial inoculant concentration to evaluate, at the molecular level, the down-regulation of genes aflR, aflQ and aflD, related to the biosynthesis of aflatoxins by the strain of Aspergillus nomius. The effects over mycotoxin contamination were thought to be result of a combination of several biotic and abiotic factors, such as interaction between living beings and physical-chemical aspects of the environment, respectively. Several possible mechanisms of action were addressed along with potentially deleterious effects ascribing from P. pentosaceus misuse as biopesticide, emphasizing the importance of evaluating lactic acid bacteria safety in new applications, concentrations, and exposure scenarios.

The prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospitals in Portugal is worrisome and among the highest in Europe. Surprisingly, MRSA prevalence in the community was described as very low (<2%) based on studies that used classical culture-based methods (CCBM). We investigated whether the apparent limited spread of MRSA in the community in Portugal might result from low sensitivity of CCBM. Nasopharyngeal- and oropharyngeal-paired samples obtained from senior adults living in nursing (n = 299) or family homes (n = 300) previously characterized by CCBM were reanalyzed. Samples were inoculated in a semi-selective enrichment medium, and those showing visible growth were evaluated by qPCR targeting nuc, mecA, and mecC genes (SSE+qPCR). By SSE+qPCR, 34 of the 1,198 (2.8%) samples were MRSA positive compared with 21 (1.8%) by CCBM. SSE+qPCR improved non-significantly detection of MRSA carriers from 5.4% to 8.0% (p = 0.12) in the nursing home collection, and from 0.3% to 1.7% (p = 0.13) in the family home collection. MRSA isolates belonged to three HA-MRSA clones widely disseminated in Portuguese hospitals. In conclusion, use of semi-selective medium combined with qPCR did not change the overall scenario previously described. In Portugal, MRSA circulation in the community among senior adults is low.

Avipoxvirus affects chickens and wild birds, and it is characterized by lesions on the nonfeathered parts of the body (the cutaneous form), or necrotic lesions in the upper respiratory tract (the diphtheritic form). In poultry farming, avian pox is usually controlled by live attenuated vaccines. However, there have been many reports of outbreaks, even in flocks of vaccinated birds. In the present study, different outbreaks of the emerging clade E avipoxvirus were detected in commercial breeder flocks of chickens vaccinated against fowlpox virus in Southeast Brazil. Clinical manifestations of these outbreaks included a marked prevalence of moderate to severe progressive lesions in the beaks of affected birds, especially in roosters with increased mortality (up to 8.48%). Also, a reduced hatchability (up to 20.77% fewer hatching eggs) was observed in these flocks. Analysis of clinical samples through light and transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of Bollinger bodies and poxvirus particles in epithelial cells and affecting chondrocytes. PCR, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of major core protein (P4b) and DNA polymerase (pol) genes identified this virus as clade E avipoxvirus. We also developed qPCR assays for open reading frames (ORFs) 49, 114, and 159 to detect and quantify this emergent virus. These results show the arrival and initial spread of this pathogen in the poultry industry, which was associated with harmful outbreaks and exacerbated clinical manifestations in vaccinated commercial breeder flocks. This study also highlights the relevance of permanent vigilance and the need to improve sanitary and vaccination programs.

In Portugal, the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) was commercially available between 2010 and 2015, following a decade of private use of PCV7. We evaluated changes on serotype distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility of pneumococci carried by children living in two regions of Portugal (one urban and one rural). Three epidemiological periods were defined: pre-PCV13 (2009-2010), early-PCV13 (2011-2012), and late-PCV13 (2015-2016). Nasopharyngeal samples (n = 4,232) were obtained from children 0-6 years old attending day-care centers. Private use of PCVs was very high in both regions (>75%). Pneumococcal carriage remained stable and high over time (62.1%, 62.4% and 61.6% (p = 0.909) in the urban region; and 59.8%, 62.8%, 59.5% (p = 0.543) in the rural region). Carriage of PCV7 serotypes remained low (5.3%, 7.8% and 4.3% in the urban region; and 2.5%, 3.7% and 4.8% in the rural region). Carriage of PCV13 serotypes not targeted by PCV7 decreased in both the urban (16.4%, 7.3%, and 1.6%; p < 0.001) and rural regions (13.2%, 7.8%, and 1.9%; p < 0.001). This decline was mostly attributable to serotype 19A (14.1%, 4.4% and 1.3% in the urban region; and 11.1%, 3.6% and 0.8% in the rural region, both p < 0.001). Serotype 3 declined over time in the urban region (10.1%, 4.4%, 0.8%; p < 0.001) and had no obvious trend in the rural region (4.2%, 6.7%, 2.4%; p = 0.505). Serotype 6C decreased in both regions while serotypes 11D, 15A/B/C, 16F, 21, 22F, 23A/B, 24F, 35F, and NT were the most prevalent in the late-PCV13 period. Intermediate resistance to penicillin and non-susceptibility to erythromycin decreased significantly in both regions (19.5%, 13.3%, and 9.3%; and 25.4%, 25.9%, and 13.4%; both p < 0.001, respectively in the urban region; and 12.4%, 11.1%, and 2.8% (p < 0.001); and 15.3%, 14.7%, and 9.2% (p = 0.037), respectively, in the rural region). In conclusion, private use of PCV13 led to significant changes on the pneumococcal population carried by children in Portugal.
