RESUMO

Adenomyoma is a benign tumor composed of smooth muscle and benign endometrium. These tumors typically originate within the uterus. An extrauterine adenomyoma is an extremely rare entity. After an extensive literature search, only four cases of primary ovarian adenomyoma appear to have thus far been reported. Here, we report a case of ovarian adenomyoma in a 39-year-old woman mimicking malignant neoplasma of the ovary, along with a brief literature review.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mechanical thrombectomy with a stent retriever applied shortly after symptom onset could increase good functional outcomes and improve survival in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion, but this has not yet been studied. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of mechanical thrombectomy with a Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke onset in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 25 consecutive patients with acute basilar artery occlusion who were treated with mechanical thrombectomy by use of the Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke symptom onset. Successful recanalization was defined as TICI grade 2b or 3. Good outcome was defined as mRS score of 0-2 at 3 months. Clinical and radiologic data in patients with good outcomes were compared with those with poor outcomes. RESULTS: Successful recanalization was achieved in 96% (24/25) of patients, and 48% (12/25) of patients had good outcomes. Eighty-eight percent (22/25) of patients survived to 3 months. The median NIHSS score on admission was significantly lower in patients with good outcomes than in those with poor outcomes (9.5 versus 14, P = .005). Procedure-related complications occurred in 2 patients (8%). No symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhages occurred. CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggests that mechanical thrombectomy by use of a Solitaire stent within 8 hours of stroke onset increases good outcomes and improves survival in patients with acute basilar artery occlusion.

RESUMO

The arg2 gene which encodes the small subunit of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase for Trichoderma virens has been cloned and used to develop a homologous transformation system. A genomic clone containing the arg2 gene was isolated from a cosmid library of T. virens based on complementation of an arginine auxotrophic mutant of this fungus. The predicted amino acid sequence of the arg2 gene shows 56-82% identity with homologous polypeptides from other fungi. It also contains an upstream open reading frame which encodes 24 amino acids. As is observed with other gene sequences encoding this polypeptide in filamentous fungi, the N-terminus of the predicted polypeptide showed characteristic features of a mitochondrial signal sequence. The arg2 gene was used for genetic transformation of T. virens in frequencies of up to 370 transformants/microgram of DNA. Heat-shock treatment of T. virens protoplasts increased the transformation frequency by fivefold, but more than 85% of the transformants were abortive. Both single-copy, homologous integration events and ectopic, non-homologous integration events were detected by Southern analyses of genomic DNA from transformed strains.

RESUMO

The role of extracellular chitinase in the biocontrol activity of Trichoderma virens was examined using genetically manipulated strains of this fungus. The T. virens strains in which the chitinase gene (cht42) was disrupted (KO) or constitutively over-expressed (COE) were constructed through genetic transformation. The resulting transformants were stable and showed patterns similar to the wild-type (WT) strain with respect to growth rate, sporulation, antibiotic production, colonization efficiency on cotton roots and growth/survival in soil. Biocontrol activity of the KO and COE strains were significantly decreased and enhanced, respectively against cotton seedling disease incited by Rhizoctonia solani when compared with the WT strain.

RESUMO

The sequences of cDNA clones encoding the Bowman-Birk proteinase inhibitor (BBPI) and its isoinhibitors (D-II and C-II) have been identified. Nucleotide sequence homologies among these clones and between the two reactive domains in each clone were very high. These homologies suggest that the BBPI and its isoinhibitor genes may have evolved from a common ancestral inhibitor. Also, clone pB2 (D-II) had two identical reactive sites that inhibit trypsin only, and three repetitive regions that are about 81 bp and initiated with ATG. It was assumed from these results that isoinhibitor D-II was the most primordial type of these inhibitors.

RESUMO

We have cloned and determined the nucleotide sequences of full-length cDNA clones for chitinase, CH6 and CH16, whose sizes were about 1.1 kb with signal peptides, from rice cell suspension cultures. Northern blot analysis with CH16 as a probe showed that the chitinase transcript reached maximum at 8 h after elicitor-treatment and their sizes were about 1.1 kb, demonstrating that these clones were induced by elicitor.
