The occurrence and profiles of organophosphate esters (OPEs) were studied in indoor and outdoor dusts from various microenvironments, including forty-seven outdoor dusts from green belts, roads, parks and residence areas, seventy-seven indoor dusts from private cars, print shops, taxis, furniture shops, offices, dormitories, shopping malls and residences house in different districts in Beijing. The total concentrations (Σ12OPEs) were eighteen times higher in indoor dusts (7.14 ×102 to 2.24 ×104 ng/g) than in outdoor dusts (36.0-1.56 ×103 ng/g). OPEs concentrations in samples from taxi and private cars were obviously higher than other indoor microenvironments. Both indoor and outdoor microenvironments also showed different compositional profiles of OPEs, indicating that polyurethane foam/building materials and hydraulic fluids/plastics were the greatest contributions in different microenvironments, with chlorinated alkyl phosphates (Cl-OPEs) being the predominant compound in both indoor dust (52.1-86.5%) and outdoor dust samples (42.6-81.3%). The uncertainty was reduced by Monte Carlo simulation, and the pollution levels of 50th and 95th percentiles were employed to calculate the average daily dosage, which was then used to calculate hazard quotient (HQ) for assessing the health risks to adults and children. Results showed that OPEs were safe even at extremely consumed concentration percentile (95th) in all groups.

The occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated in water and sediments in Liaohe River Basin. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 111.9 to 2,931.6 ng/L in water and from 92.2 to 295,635.2 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediments. The PAHs in water were dominated by 2-, 3- and 4-ring PAHs, which accounted for 42.8 %, 39.4 % and 14.2 % of the total PAHs, respectively, while in sediment PAHs were dominated by 3-, 4- and 5-ring PAHs, which accounted for 26.5 %, 44.2 % and 17.4 % of the total PAHs, respectively. The benzo[a]pyrene equivalents for water samples showed that in 37 out of 50 sites the values were greater than the national standard, and the environmental risk assessment indicated that high environmental risk of PAHs existed in sediments. Using the molecular ratio method for the source identification it was concluded that PAHs were determined to be from mixed sources (petroleum and combustion) in Liaohe River system and combustion sources in Daliao River system.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) carrying antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) has attracted a great deal of attention because of its threat to the ecology and human health. Traditional porous adsorbents, such as microporous biochar and natural mineral, are low-effective in removing eDNA from sewage. This study used cuttlefish-bone (CB), a fishery waste, as an anticipated material to adsorb a model compound of eDNA from herring sperm (hsDNA). An interesting result was firstly observed that extremely high DNA adsorption on cuttlefish-bone pyrolysis derivative (CCB) was up to 88.7 mg/g, 3-10 folds higher than that of most other adsorbents in the existing literatures, which was attributed to the carbon film and large pores. To achieve an adsorption rate of 75 %, hsDNA adsorption took 96 h on CB but only 24 h on CCB, which was attributed to the fluent channel of CCB. The ligand exchange, Ca2+ bridge and π-π interaction were identified as dominated adsorption mechanisms, based on FTIR and phosphate competition experiments. This study exploited a high-efficient, environmentally friendly, and low-cost adsorbent for treating ARG-contaminated soil and water.

The pollution and ecological risk characteristics of five typical antibiotics found in the surface water of the Liaohe River Basin (LRB) were analyzed and evaluated using solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. These results showed that macrolides have the highest average concentration of all antibiotics in the surface water of the LRB of 201.88 ng·L-1, followed by quinolones, trimethoprim, and sulfonamides with average concentrations of 113.40 ng·L-1, 93.93 ng·L-1, and 124.27 ng·L-1, respectively. Tetracycline demonstrated the lowest concentration at 24.37 ng·L-1. In addition, antibiotics pollution of the Daliao River is clearly identified as being higher than that of the Liaohe River, and the highest proportion of antibiotic pollution (49.1%) is found to come from human use according to a source apportionme0nt analysis. Relatively high levels of ecological risk are identified from Trimethoprim and Erythromycin-H2O concentrations, especially for cities such as Xinmin, Shenyang, and Anshan. The risk assessment indicates that surface water of the LRB faces high ecological risk and argues for greater attention to be paid to risk management and pollution controls.

The occurrence and distribution of 19 antibiotics including ten sulfonamides, four quinolones, three tetracyclines and two macrolides in water, sediment, and biota samples from the Liao River Basin, China were investigated in the present study. The samples were collected in May 2012, and laboratory analyses revealed that antibiotics were widely distributed in the Liao River Basin. Macrolides made up the majority of antibiotics in the water ranging from not detected (ND) to 3162.22 ng L(-1), while tetracyclines and macrolides were the predominant antibiotics in the sediments, ranging from ND to 404.82 µg kg(-1) (mean 32.11 µg kg(-1) dw) and ND to 375.13 (mean 32.77 µg kg(-1) dw), with detection frequencies of 37.3% and 38.1%, respectively. In biological samples, quinolones were the most frequently detected antibiotics (57.1-100%), with concentrations ranging from 286.6-1655.3 µg kg(-1). The highest bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of 45407 L kg(-1) was found for enrofloxacin. The phase distribution calculation showed that tetracyclines were the most strongly adsorbed antibiotics in the sediment, with the highest pseudo-partitioning coefficient values, ranging from 1299 to 1499 L kg(-1). The geographical differences of antibiotic concentrations were largely due to anthropogenic activities and the sewage discharges from the local cities along the rivers.

Liaohe River Basin is an important region in northeast China, which consists of several main rivers including Liao River, Taizi river, Daliao River, and Hun River. As a highly industrialized region, the basin receives dense waste discharges, causing severe environmental problems. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution of aqueous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Liaohe River Basin from 50 sampling sites in both dry (May) and level (October) periods in 2012 was investigated. Sixteen USEPA priority PAHs were quantified by gas chromatography/mass selective detector. The total PAH concentration ranged from 111.8 to 2,931.6 ng/L in the dry period and from 94.8 to 2766.0 ng/L in the level period, respectively. As for the spatial distribution, the mean concentration of PAHs followed the order of Taizi River > Daliao River > Hun River > Liao River, showing higher concentrations close to large cities with dense industries. The composition and possible sources of PAHs in the water samples were also determined. The fractions of low molecular weight PAHs ranged from 58.2 to 93.3 %, indicating the influence of low or moderate temperature combustion process. Diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to study the possible source categories in the study area, and consistent results were obtained from different techniques, that PAHs in water samples mainly originated from complex sources, i.e., both pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. The benzo[a]pyrene equivalents (EBaP) characterizing the ecological risk of PAHs to the aquatic environment suggested that PAHs in Liaohe River Basin had already caused environmental health risks.
