RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) toward patient safety among nurses working at primary and comprehensive health care centers in Jordan; to identify factors that predict KAPs among nurses. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional design was conducted using a convenience sample of 307 primary health care nurses in Jordan. A self-reported questionnaire (KAPs) toward patient safety was distributed to the nurses between August 2022 and October 2022. RESULTS: The results revealed that the mean score of knowledge was 9.51 out of 11 (SD = 1.35), the mean score of attitudes was 57.66 out of 75 (SD = 9.17), and the mean score of practices was 5.64 out of 8 (SD = 1.72). Where 59% of participants reported good knowledge about patient safety. 61% of participants reported positive attitudes toward patient safety. A significant regression equation was found (R² = 0.073, F= (2.94), p = 0 0.003). Age and having information on patient safety during continuing education were significant predictors of the attitude score (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSION: It is necessary to implement patient safety education programs and training.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop Nurses and Midwives' Perceptions of their Roles in Primary Healthcare (NMPR-PHC) and evaluate its psychometric properties. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed to recruit a convenient sample of 150 registered nurses and midwives from various primary healthcare settings in Jordan. Reliability was evaluated by examining the internal consistency and split-half reliability of the item. A exploratory factor analysis was performed to assess the factor structure of the NMPR-PHC. RESULTS: The final version of NMPR-PHC contained 18 items. Exploratory factor analysis revealed six factors (care coordination and interprofessional collaboration, workplace facilitators of the primary healthcare, management of care, research, workplace constraints of primary healthcare, and advanced education) for the questionnaire which explained 66.49% of the total variance. The Cronbach's α of the total scale was 0.834, the subscales Cronbach's α were ranging between 0.662 and 0.770, and the split-half reliability of the total scale was 0.734. CONCLUSION: The overall performance of the questionnaire showed promising sound psychometric properties. The NMPR-PHC can be recommended for use as a tool for the assessment of nurses and midwives' perceptions of their roles in primary healthcare.

RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is a serious public health threat worldwide; in the developing world there are less serious efforts towards controlling women's and children's exposure to SHS. Knowledge, attitudes and avoidance practices among Jordanian women have never been thoroughly studied. The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and avoidance behavior towards SHS exposure among employed Jordanian women with higher education. METHODS: A survey was conducted among employed Jordanian women at two universities. A total of 209 women were included in the analysis. Two questionnaires regarding SHS exposure were used to measure knowledge, attitudes and avoidance practices. RESULTS: Most respondents were regularly exposed to SHS in various locations during daily life, even though they were very knowledgeable about the dangers of SHS exposure for women and children. However, the subject's attitudes and avoidance behavior did not reflect the level of knowledge about SHS risks. The results suggests there is a large discrepancy between SHS exposure, knowledge, attitudes and avoidance behavior among highly educated Jordanian women that is likely influenced by culture and traditional gender roles. Public health initiatives are needed in Jordan to address public policy, institutional practices and to empowerment of women to reduce SHS exposure.
