PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to compare the operative time, intraoperative complications, length of stay, readmission rates, overall complications, mortality, and cost associated with Robotic Surgery (RS) and Laparascopic Surgery (LS) in anti-reflux and hiatal hernia surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science and Scopus databases. Studies comparing short-term outcomes and cost between RS and LS in patients with anti-reflux and hiatal hernia were included. Data on operative time, complications, length of stay, readmission rates, overall complications, mortality, and cost were extracted. Quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the MINORS scale. RESULTS: Fourteen retrospective observational studies involving a total of 555,368 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed no statistically significant difference in operative time, intraoperative complications, length of stay, readmission rates, overall complications, and mortality between RS and LS. However, LS was associated with lower costs compared to RS. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrates that RS has non-inferior short-term outcomes in anti-reflux and hiatal hernia surgery, compared to LS. LS is more cost-effective, but RS offers potential benefits such as improved visualization and enhanced surgical techniques. Further research, including randomized controlled trials and long-term outcome studies, is needed to validate and refine these findings.

OBJECTIVE: Safe, effective, and biocompatible minimally invasive procedures with the potential to stimulate collagen production have been made to recover dermal thickness and skin quality. The main of this animal model experiment was to observe the effect of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polydioxanone (PDO) biostimulators in collagen I and III after hypodermal injection. METHODOLOGY: Sixteen adult female rats (Wistar) were randomized into four groups and had dorsal treatment with: G1: hypodermic subcision (HS) only; G2: HS and PLLA hypodermic injection (HI), G3: HS and PDO HI; G4: Control, with no treatment. RESULTS: In histochemical, it was observed hypodermal and dermal tissue in more organized thickness in G3 and in G4 when compared to G1 and G2. There was few difference in G1 compared to G4. The tissue of G2 showed irregularities in the arrangement of collagen fibers, less defined structure and lower distribution of type I collagen compared to the other groups. There is a greater tendency for the proportions of type III collagen among tissues treated with both biostimulators (G2 and G3). PLLA and PDO had relatively similar percentages of collagen when compared to G4. The amount of type I collagen was higher in tissues treated with subcision, while type III collagen was higher in tissues treated with both biostimulators. CONCLUSION: G3 showed better performance in collagen production, although small, when compared with G2.

Characterization and development of hydrocarbon reservoirs depends on the classification of lithological patterns from well log data. In thin reservoir units, limited vertical data impedes the efficient classification of lithologies. We present a test case of petrofacies classification using machine learning models in a thin interval of finely laminated limestones using pseudo-well data created over outcrops (radiometric and unconfined compressive strength logs). We tested Gaussian naïve Bayes (GNB) and support vector machine (SVM) techniques to classify eight petrofacies types, divided into two groups. The objective was to observe the capacity of some well-known models to classify petrofacies with a high-frequency vertical variation of diagenetic heterogeneities in an extreme scenario within a thin sedimentary interval. The GNB was less effective (F 1 score of 0.29), and the SVM achieved the best results in classifying the main facies patterns (F 1 = 0.47). However, the GNB performed better when the analysis was focused on distinguishing the two main groups of petrofacies. The results demonstrate that high-frequency facies variations present a challenge to the automatic identification of lithofacies, mainly due to local variations in horizontal heterogeneities (on the mm- to cm-scale) created by depositional and diagenetic processes, which impact the flow in porous media.

The sacred ayahuasca brew, utilized by indigenous communities in the Amazon and syncretic religious groups in Brazil, primarily consists of a decoction of two plants: (i) the Amazonian liana known as Mariri or Jagube (Banisteriopsis caapi), and (ii) the shrub referred as Chacrona or Rainha (Psychotria viridis). While Chacrona leaves are rich in N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a potent psychedelic, the macerated vine of Mariri provides beta-carboline alkaloids acting as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, preventing DMT's degradation. This study sequenced, assembled, and analyzed the complete genome of B. caapi's mitochondrion, yielding a circular structure spanning 503,502 bp. Although the mtDNA encompasses most plant mitochondrial genes, it lacks some ribosomal genes, presents some atypical genes, and contains plastid pseudogenes, suggesting gene transfer between organelles. The presence of a 7-Kb repetitive segment containing copies of the rrnL and trnfM genes suggests mitogenome isomerization, supporting the hypothesis of dynamic mitogenome maintenance in plants. Phylogenetics and phylogenomics across 24 Malpighiales confirms the sample's placement in the "Tucunacá" ethnovariety, aligning with morphological identification. This study spearheads efforts to decode the genome of this esteemed Malpighiaceae.

Extragastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, which develop in the retroperitoneum, mesentery, and omentum, lacking continuity to the stomach or intestines. Authors hereby present a female patient with a large heterogeneous abdominal mass as a case of an omental EGIST. A 46-year-old woman was referred to our hospital due to an insidious enlargement and colicky pain in the right iliac fossa. Abdominal palpation revealed a voluminous, freely mobile, and non-pulsatile mesoabdominal bulge expanding to the hypogastrium. On exploratory midline laparotomy, the tumor was densely fused to the greater omentum, not connected to the stomach, without gross involvement of adjacent structures. The large mass was completely excised after adequate mobilization. Immunohistochemical techniques showed strong and diffuse expression of WT1, actin and DOG-1, as well as multifocal c-KIT marking. Mutational study concluded a double mutation of KIT exon 9 and a mutation of PDGFRA exon 18. The patient was submitted to adjuvant treatment with imatinib mesylate 800 mg/day. Despite an extremely diverse presentation, omental EGISTs often remain clinically silent for a long time having enough space to grow before becoming symptomatic. These tumors have a consistent pattern of metastasis that typically spares lymph nodes unlike epithelial gut neoplasms. Surgery remains the preferred treatment for non-metastatic EGISTs of the greater omentum. It is possible that DOG-1 will supplant KIT as the leading marker in the future. The scarcity of knowledge on omental EGISTs implies a close monitoring of these patients to detect local relapse or distant metastasis.

There are various therapeutic options for achalasia. Nevertheless, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) and laparoscopic Heller myotomy with fundoplication (LHM) are distinguished by their efficacy and low incidence of complications. Compare POEM and LHM regarding several outcomes in patients with achalasia. This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. An exhaustive literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. Studies comparing several outcomes between POEM and LHM in patients with achalasia were included. Data on clinical success, operative time, intraoperative complications, length of stay, reintervention rates, postoperative pain, overall complications, occurrence of GERD symptoms, use of proton bomb inhibitors and esophagitis were extracted. Quality assessment of the included studies was performed using the MINORS scale. We included 20 retrospective observational studies with a combined total of 5139 participants. The results demonstrated that there was no statistically significant difference in terms of intraoperative complications, postoperative complications, reintervention rate, occurrence of GERD symptoms, GERD HRQL, use of proton pump inhibitors, and esophagitis between POEM and LHM groups. Conversely, POEM was associated with higher clinical success and shorter operative time, length of stay, and postoperative pain. This meta-analysis concludes that both POEM and LHM, are effective and safe treatments for achalasia. However, POEM demonstrates better results regarding clinical success, operative time, length of stay, postoperative pain, and a tendency towards lower recurrence.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic atrophic gastritis may contribute to gastric polyps (GP) phenotype in familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Considering the high prevalence of Helicobacter-pylori (HP) infection in Portugal, we aim to characterise GP in a series of Portuguese patients. METHODS: In a retrospectively-selected series of 53 FAP patients, clinical data and histopathological features of GP and background gastric mucosa were studied. SPSS (27.0) was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Thirteen patients (24.5%) developed fundic gland polyps (FGP), seven (13.2%) gastric adenomas (GA) and ten (18.9%) both FGP and GA. Out of 100 GP, four were hyperplastic polyps, 58 FGP (24 with dysplasia), 35 intestinal-type GA (intGA) and three foveolar-type GA (fovGA). IntGA were larger (60% >7mm, p=0.03), occurred predominantly in the distal stomach (66.7%, p=0.024), in patients harbouring gastric intestinal metaplasia (IM) (86.7%, p<0.001) and duodenal adenomas (86.7%, p<0.001) Conclusion: This is the first Western series showing high prevalence of intGA in FAP patients, comparable to Asian cohorts. HP infection and chronic atrophic gastritis/intestinal metaplasia are likely responsible for this difference, with risk of neoplastic transformation and management implications. Biopsy/excision of GP >7mm, in the distal stomach, and in patients harbouring gastric intestinal metaplasia/duodenal adenomas should be considered.

Cancer is a result of abnormal cell proliferation. This pathology is a serious health problem since it is a leading cause of death worldwide. Current anti-cancer therapies rely on surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. However, these treatments still present major associated problems, namely the absence of specificity. Thus, it is urgent to develop novel therapeutic strategies. Nanoparticles, particularly dendrimers, have been paving their way to the front line of cancer treatment, mostly for drug and gene delivery, diagnosis, and disease monitoring. This is mainly derived from their high versatility, which results from their ability to undergo distinct surface functionalization, leading to improved performance. In recent years, the anticancer and antimetastatic capacities of dendrimers have been discovered, opening new frontiers to dendrimer-based chemotherapeutics. In the present review, we summarize the intrinsic anticancer activity of different dendrimers as well as their use as nanocarriers in cancer diagnostics and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Regarding the assessment of patients' immune and nutritional status, prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been reported as a predictive marker for surgical outcomes in various types of cancer. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of PNI in prognosis of gastric cancer patients submitted to curative-intent resectional surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis with 637 gastric cancer cases submitted to curative-intent surgery, between 2010 and 2017, in an upper GI surgery unit. We analyzed 396 patients that met the inclusion criteria for this study. The median follow-up was 37 (0-113) months. RESULTS: According to Youden's method, the optimal PNI cutoff for OS was 41.625 (sensitivity 89.3% and specificity 41.3%). OS was significantly shorter in the lower-PNI group of patients when compared to the higher-PNI group (40.26 vs 77.49 months; p < 0.001). Higher PNI had a positive impact on OS in univariable analysis. When adjusted to pStage, higher PNI was still significantly associated with better OS (HR 0.405; CI 95% 0.253-0.649; p < 0.001). Regarding DFS, higher PNI was associated with better DFS (HR 0.421; CI 95% 0.218-0.815; p = 0.010). Higher-PNI group had a protective effect regarding postoperative morbidity and mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In this cohort, PNI was disclosed to significantly impact GC patients' OS and DFS, including in multivariable analysis when adjusting for classical prognostic features. PNI can be used to predict patients at increased risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality. This index may be of use in identifying candidate patients who would benefit from perioperative nutritional support to improve surgical outcomes.

The Floc and Sink technique promotes, through the application of coagulants and clays, the removal of phosphorus and algal biomass from the water column by flocculation and sedimentation. Although it is a promising technique for mitigating harmful cyanobacterial blooms, little is known about the impacts on other phytoplankton species as well as it is not known how species with mechanisms of resistance to sedimentation respond to the application of these products. In this study, a laboratory experiment was carried out with water from a eutrophic reservoir to assess the impact of applying aluminum-based coagulants, aluminum sulfate and polyaluminium chloride, and chitosan, alone and combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite on the phytoplankton community, in a functional approach based on morphology (Morphology-Based Functional Groups - MBFG, Kruk et al., 2010 and Reynolds et al., 2014), with an emphasis on the characteristics that provide resistance to sedimentation. We tested two hypotheses: phytoplankton species with adaptive mechanisms that provide buoyancy to cells are more resistant to the removal from the water column by coagulants and clays; and coagulants based on metals and modified clays are more efficient in sedimentation of microalgal cells compared to natural products, regardless of the presence of an adaptive mechanism of resistance to sedimentation. Our results showed that aluminum sulfate and polyaluminium chloride alone or combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite effectively sedimented the cells, regardless of the presence of buoyancy mechanisms. In contrast, the natural coagulant chitosan alone or combined with lanthanum modified bentonite and natural bentonite removed only those species that were small-celled or small colonial without specialized structures or with the presence of spines, arms and siliceous exoskeleton. In the case of species with aerotopes and flagella, the removal was not effective and still caused an increase in algal biomass due to the formation of suspended cell aggregates on the surface of the water column of the experimental units. Therefore, we concluded that the Floc and Sink technique has an impact on the phytoplankton community because it removes from the water column species that are not the target of coagulants and clays, but that are considered important sources of energy in freshwater trophic webs. This result differs according to the type of product used as well as it is related to the morphological adaptations that favor the buoyancy of cells in the water column. Species with aerotopes and flagella are more resistant to sedimentation and may make the use of products applied in the Floc and Sink technique unfeasible. Nevertheless, these results represent only an immediate effect of the technique on the phytoplankton community, thus requiring a longer time scale evaluation to determine the algae that can effectively recover water column. Therefore, we also emphasize that algae of nutritional value can recover over time and make the long-term application of the technique acceptable.

Cancer is the second most common cause of death worldwide, having its origin in the abnormal growth of cells. Available chemotherapeutics still present major drawbacks, usually associated with high toxicity and poor distribution, with only a small fraction of drugs reaching the tumour sites. Thus, it is urgent to develop novel therapeutic strategies. Cancer cells can reprogram their lipid metabolism to sustain uncontrolled proliferation, and, therefore, accumulate a higher amount of lipid droplets (LDs). LDs are cytoplasmic organelles that store neutral lipids and are hypothesized to sequester anti-cancer drugs, leading to reduced efficacy. Thus, the increased biogenesis of LDs in neoplastic conditions makes them suitable targets for anticancer therapy and for the development of new dyes for cancer cells imaging. In recent years, cancer nanotherapeutics offered some exciting possibilities, including improvement tumour detection and eradication. In this review we summarize LDs biogenesis, structure and composition, and highlight their role in cancer theranostics.

Flowers, leaves, fruits and buds of Tropaeolum majus are used for ornamental, medicinal and food purposes. However, salt stress limits the development and productivity of T. majus due to biochemical, physiological and anatomical disturbances. Polyamine application is an alternative for mitigating the harmful effects of salt stress. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of spermine application in T. majus grown under salt stress. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 3 × 2 factorial scheme, with 0, 40 mM (moderate salt stress) and 80 mM (severe salt stress) NaCl, and 0 and 1 mM spermine, and with five replicates. Growth (plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, number of flowers, number of buds, leaf dry mass, stem dry mass and flower dry mass), gas exchange (gs, A, E, Ci and WUE), relative water content, contents of free amino acids, phenolic compounds, reducing and non-reducing sugars, lipid peroxidation and enzymatic activities (CAT, POD and APX) were evaluated. Spermine application decreased the harmful effects of salt stress on the growth and gas exchange and increased flowering in T. majus. Furthermore, the relative water content of T. majus increased under severe salt stress conditions. Spermine application reduced the contents of total phenolic compounds, free amino acids, reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars on leaves of T. majus. Spermine application increased CAT and POD activities in plants under severe salt stress and POD and APX in plants under moderate salt stress.

Studies on the use of deficit irrigation and application of models for estimating agronomic performance of crops can help in more sustainable agricultural managements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigation levels on the agronomic performance of white oat (Avena sativa L.) and accuracy of the CERES-Barley model in simulating white oat growth and yield, as well as performing long-term simulation to identify the best sowing time for each irrigation management. The experiment consisted of five irrigation levels (11%, 31%, 60%, 87%, and 100%), being conducted in two agricultural years in southeastern Brazil. The model was calibrated with data of the treatment without water deficit (100%) of the first year and validated with the data of the other treatments in the 2 years. Long-term analyses, with a historical series of 16 years, were performed to recommend the best sowing dates for each irrigation management. Deficit irrigation linearly reduces the agronomic performance of white oat. The high accuracy of white oat yield estimation (R2 = 0.86; RMSE = 616 kg ha-1) using the CERES-Barley model allowed the long-term simulation for establishing the best sowing date for each irrigation level. For higher irrigation levels, sowing in periods with lower temperature (May and June) is more appropriate, as the 1 °C increment in the average temperature before flowering reduces crop yield by 600 kg ha-1. At irrigation levels with higher deficit, sowing in periods with higher rainfall (March and April) promotes higher crop yield.

RESUMO

A new species of Parotocinclus is described from the Rio Mamanguape basin, in the State of Paraíba, north-eastern Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all of its congeners, except for P. bahiensis, P. cesarpintoi, P. jumbo, P. nandae and P. spilosoma, by the presence of an abdomen covered by a few small and dispersed platelets (vs. an abdomen entirely covered by large plates in adult individuals or the absence of plates in that region). The new species differs from those mentioned above with respect to several features, such as an exposed pectoral girdle and supporting odontodes medially and laterally, the number of premaxillary and dentary teeth, odontodes covering only the lateral portion of the cleithrum and the absence of irregular golden lines on the head and body (colour in vivo). The new species was collected only in the upper and middle portions of the Rio Mamanguape basin, suggesting a geographic distribution restricted to the Caatinga biome.

To look into the current controversy in cancer immunotherapy of the relative importance of PD-L1 expression on tumor cells versus non-tumor cells of the tumor microenvironment, a hematological mouse tumor model was chosen. By combining a genetic CRISPR/Cas9 and immunotherapeutic approach and using a syngeneic hematopoietic transplantable tumor model (E.G7-cOVA tumor cells), we demonstrated that dual blockade of PD-L1 interaction with PD-1 and CD80 enhanced anti-tumor immune responses that either delayed tumor growth or led to its complete eradication. PD-L1 expression on non-tumor cells of the tumor microenvironment was required for the promotion of tumor immune escape and its blockade elicited potent anti-tumor responses to PD-L1 WT and to PD-L1-deficient tumor cells. PD-L1+ tumors implanted in PD-L1-deficient mice exhibited delayed tumor growth independently of PD-L1 blockade. These findings emphasize that PD-L1 expression on non-tumor cells plays a major role in this tumor model. These observations should turn our attention to the tumor microenvironment in hematological malignancies because of its unappreciated contribution to create a conditioned niche for the tumor to grow and evade the anti-tumor immune response.

PURPOSE: Platinum-derived chemotherapy is one of the cornerstones in the treatment of central nervous system tumors in children. We aimed to assess the incidence of hearing loss in children after the exposure to platinum drugs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study of prospectively collected data on children consecutively diagnosed with brain tumors and treated with platinum derivatives at a tertiary referral hospital between January 2006 and December 2015. We analyzed multiples variables, such as: age at diagnosis, tumor location, hydrocephalus, platinum drug type, radiotherapy, and follow-up time. The final sample size was 51 patients. RESULTS: The median age at diagnosis was 6 years. The median overall follow-up time was 75 months. The incidence of ototoxicity was 23.5%. Rates of hearing loss with carboplatinum were lower than with cisplatinum. A statistically significant association occurred between the presence of hydrocephalus, radiotherapy exposure, infratentorial tumor location, and ototoxicity after treatment with platinum derivatives. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood central nervous system tumors nowadays exhibit improved cure and survival rates. However, the ototoxicity resulting from the chemotherapy treatment may accompany patients for the rest of their lives. This study reveals that this occurrence is not negligible, and the association of radiotherapy and the presence of hydrocephalus can be potentiating factors.

INTRODUCTION: The vectorcardiography (VCG) is a method of representing the heart's electrical activity in three dimensions that is not frequently used in clinical practice due to the higher complexity compared to electrocardiography (ECG). A way around this problem was the development of regression techniques to obtain the VCG from the 12­lead ECG and the evaluation of these techniques is done by comparing the parameters obtained by the gold standard method and by the VCG obtained by the alternative methods. In this paper it is proposed instead a comparison between the images of the VCG planes using the values returned by digital image processing metrics such as PSNR, SSIM and PW-SSIM. METHODS: The signals used were obtained from the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt Diagnostic ECG Database, which contains both the VCGs obtained by the gold standard method and the 12 lead ECG signals. They were divided into five groups that contained a control group and according to the region of the wall infarction. The ECG signals were then filtered using a Butterworth Finite Impulse Response bandpass filter, with cutoff frequencies of 3 Hz and 45 Hz and then the VCGs were by a computer application using the Kors inverse matrix method, the Kors quasi-orthogonal method and the Dower Inverse Matrix method. The reconstructed signals were then compared using the PSNR, SSIM and PW-SSIM methods. The returned values were presented in tables for each group containing the average value and standard deviance for each method in each VCG plane. RESULTS: Using image processing techniques, it was possible to perceive that the alternative methods to obtain the VCG have a high confiability that could be compared to the gold standard in signals from healthy subjects. However, signals from pathological subjects present variations that could be caused by a deficit of these alternative methods to represent the pathology in these cases. Considering the PW-SSIM, the Frontal plane by the reconstructions was considered the most similar to the gold standard, having PW-SSIM values higher than 0.93 and for the Horizontal plane two groups had PW-SSIM values lower than 0.90 and for the Sagittal plane all groups had values lower than this value. DISCUSSION: The values yielded by the PSNR and SSIM had low variance, worsening the perception of the effect of the reconstruction method used or the infarction effect over the reconstruction. The values lower than 0.90 could indicate that these planes have their generation most affected by the infarction. CONCLUSION: The three methods of obtaining the VCG Frank leads, the Kors Quasi-Orthogonal method, the Kors Linear Regression method and the Dower Inverse Matrix, presented differences in the metrics: PSNR, SSIM and PW-SSIM in normal subjects according to the planes frontal, horizontal and sagittal and in subjects with Myocardial Infarction according to its topography: anterior, inferolateral, inferior or multiarterials. Considering only the PW-SSIM, the QO method had the best performance in different signals, followed by the Dower method.

Botulism is a neuroparalytic intoxication, usually fatal, caused by the botulinum toxins (BoNTs). Vaccination is the best-known strategy to prevent this disease in ruminants. Serotypes C and D and their variants CD and DC are the main types responsible for botulism in bovine and buffaloes in Brazil and cattle in Japan and Europe. Brazil has a herd of approximately 1.39 million buffaloes and is the largest producer in the Western world. This study aimed to assess the humoral immune response of buffaloes during the 12-month period after vaccination against BoNT serotypes C and D with a recombinant vaccine in three different concentrations (100, 200, and 400 µg) of non-purified recombinant proteins (Vrec) and also with a bivalent commercial toxoid (Vcom). Vrec400 was the best vaccine among those tested because it induced higher levels of antibodies and maintained higher levels of antibodies for the longest time, while Vrec200 could be considered the most cost-effective vaccine for large-scale production. None of the vaccines were able to promote continuous immunological protection within the timeframe proposed by the current Brazilian vaccination protocol. Further studies should focus on vaccine adjustments to ensure continued humoral protection against botulism.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are essential for the maintenance of tolerance to self and non-self through cell-intrinsic and cell-extrinsic mechanisms. Peripheral Tregs survival and clonal expansion largely depend on IL-2 and access to co-stimulatory signals such as CD28. Engagement of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily members, in particular TNFR2 and DR3, contribute to promote peripheral Tregs expansion and sustain their survival. This property can be leveraged to enhance tolerance to allogeneic transplants by tipping the balance of Tregs over conventional T cells during the course of immune reconstitution. This is of particular interest in peri-transplant tolerance induction protocols in which T cell depletion is applied to reduce the frequency of alloreactive T cells or in conditioning regimens that allow allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. These conditioning regimens are being implemented to limit long-term side effects of continuous immunosuppression and facilitate the establishment of a state of donor-specific tolerance. Lymphopenia-induced homeostatic proliferation in response to cytoreductive conditioning is a window of opportunity to enhance preferential expansion of Tregs during homeostatic proliferation that can be potentiated by agonist stimulation of TNFR.

Chevrel phases are molybdenum chalcogenides of formula M xMo6X8 (where M is a cation and X is a chalcogen) that present a complex and captivating intercalation chemistry that has drawn the interest of the solid-state chemistry community since their discovery. This property has a huge potential for applied science and device development for energy storage and pollutant removal and detection, but a deeper knowledge of the intercalation processes and chemistry is still necessary. In the present work, the intercalation of Cd2+ in aqueous solution has been studied, taking advantage of the complementarity of electrochemical characterization and synchrotron powder diffraction acquired during an in situ combined experiment. During the experiment, industrially adequate electrochemical conditions (room temperature and reduced process time) were applied, allowing a better understanding of the intercalation processes. The intercalated phases obtained by electrochemistry have been characterized ex situ, and for the first time the structures of Cd2Mo6X8 (X = S, Se) have been determined. Unexpectedly, Cd2Mo6Se8 presents a trigonal crystal structure with only cavity 2 occupied, which has not been encountered before for Chevrel phases.
