RESUMO

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the CNS. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) contributes to the MS pathogenesis because high levels of EBV EBNA386-405-specific antibodies cross react with the CNS-derived GlialCAM370-389. However, it is unclear why only some individuals with such high autoreactive antibody titers develop MS. Here, we show that autoreactive cells are eliminated by distinct immune responses, which are determined by genetic variations of the host, as well as of the infecting EBV and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). We demonstrate that potent cytotoxic NKG2C+ and NKG2D+ natural killer (NK) cells and distinct EBV-specific T cell responses kill autoreactive GlialCAM370-389-specific cells. Furthermore, immune evasion of these autoreactive cells was induced by EBV-variant-specific upregulation of the immunomodulatory HLA-E. These defined virus and host genetic pre-dispositions are associated with an up to 260-fold increased risk of MS. Our findings thus allow the early identification of patients at risk for MS and suggest additional therapeutic options against MS.

RESUMO

We present a first-draft digital reconstruction of the microcircuitry of somatosensory cortex of juvenile rat. The reconstruction uses cellular and synaptic organizing principles to algorithmically reconstruct detailed anatomy and physiology from sparse experimental data. An objective anatomical method defines a neocortical volume of 0.29 ± 0.01 mm(3) containing ~31,000 neurons, and patch-clamp studies identify 55 layer-specific morphological and 207 morpho-electrical neuron subtypes. When digitally reconstructed neurons are positioned in the volume and synapse formation is restricted to biological bouton densities and numbers of synapses per connection, their overlapping arbors form ~8 million connections with ~37 million synapses. Simulations reproduce an array of in vitro and in vivo experiments without parameter tuning. Additionally, we find a spectrum of network states with a sharp transition from synchronous to asynchronous activity, modulated by physiological mechanisms. The spectrum of network states, dynamically reconfigured around this transition, supports diverse information processing strategies. PAPERCLIP: VIDEO ABSTRACT.

RESUMO

Space radiation is a notable hazard for long-duration human spaceflight1. Associated risks include cancer, cataracts, degenerative diseases2 and tissue reactions from large, acute exposures3. Space radiation originates from diverse sources, including galactic cosmic rays4, trapped-particle (Van Allen) belts5 and solar-particle events6. Previous radiation data are from the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle in low-Earth orbit protected by heavy shielding and Earth's magnetic field7,8 and lightly shielded interplanetary robotic probes such as Mars Science Laboratory and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter9,10. Limited data from the Apollo missions11-13 and ground measurements with substantial caveats are also available14. Here we report radiation measurements from the heavily shielded Orion spacecraft on the uncrewed Artemis I lunar mission. At differing shielding locations inside the vehicle, a fourfold difference in dose rates was observed during proton-belt passes that are similar to large, reference solar-particle events. Interplanetary cosmic-ray dose equivalent rates in Orion were as much as 60% lower than previous observations9. Furthermore, a change in orientation of the spacecraft during the proton-belt transit resulted in a reduction of radiation dose rates of around 50%. These measurements validate the Orion for future crewed exploration and inform future human spaceflight mission design.

RESUMO

The objective is to comprehensively review novel pharmacotherapies used in multiple sclerosis (MS) and the possibilities they may carry for therapeutic improvement. Specifically, we discuss pathophysiological mechanisms worth targeting in MS, ranging from well known targets, such as autoinflammation and demyelination, to more novel and advanced targets, such as neuroaxonal damage and repair. To set the stage, a brief overview of clinical MS phenotypes is provided, followed by a comprehensive recapitulation of both clinical and paraclinical outcomes available to assess the effectiveness of treatments in achieving these targets. Finally, we discuss various promising novel and emerging treatments, including their respective hypothesized modes of action and currently available evidence from clinical trials. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This comprehensive review discusses pathophysiological mechanisms worth targeting in multiple sclerosis. Various promising novel and emerging treatments, including their respective hypothesized modes of action and currently available evidence from clinical trials, are reviewed.

RESUMO

Voltage-gated ion channels allow ion flux across biological membranes in response to changes in the membrane potential. HCNL1 is a recently discovered voltage-gated ion channel that selectively conducts protons through its voltage-sensing domain (VSD), reminiscent of the well-studied depolarization-activated Hv1 proton channel. However, HCNL1 is activated by hyperpolarization, allowing the influx of protons, which leads to an intracellular acidification in zebrafish sperm. Zinc ions (Zn2+) are important cofactors in many proteins and essential for sperm physiology. Proton channels such as Hv1 and Otopetrin1 are inhibited by Zn2+. We investigated the effect of Zn2+ on heterologously expressed HCNL1 channels using electrophysiological and fluorometric techniques. Extracellular Zn2+ inhibits HCNL1 currents with an apparent half-maximal inhibition (IC50) of 26 µM. Zn2+ slows voltage-dependent current kinetics, shifts the voltage-dependent activation to more negative potentials, and alters hyperpolarization-induced conformational changes of the voltage sensor. Our data suggest that extracellular Zn2+ inhibits HCNL1 currents by multiple mechanisms, including modulation of channel gating. Two histidine residues located at the extracellular side of the VSD might weakly contribute to Zn2+ coordination: mutants with either histidine replaced with alanine show modest shifts of the IC50 values to higher concentrations. Interestingly, Zn2+ inhibits HCNL1 at even lower concentrations from the intracellular side (IC50 ≈ 0.5 µM). A histidine residue at the intracellular end of S1 (position 50) is important for Zn2+ binding: much higher Zn2+ concentrations are required to inhibit the mutant HCNL1-H50A (IC50 ≈ 106 µM). We anticipate that Zn2+ will be a useful ion to study the structure-function relationship of HCNL1 as well as the physiological role of HCNL1 in zebrafish sperm.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pain analgesia hypothesis suggests that reduced pain sensitivity (PS) is a specific risk factor for the engagement in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Consistent with this, several studies found reduced PS in adults as well as adolescents with NSSI. Cross-sectional studies in adults with borderline personality disorder (BPD) suggest that PS may (partially) normalize after remission or reduction of BPD symptoms. The objective of the present study was to investigate the development of PS over 1 year in a sample of adolescents with NSSI and to investigate whether PS at baseline predicts longitudinal change in NSSI. METHODS: N = 66 adolescents who underwent specialized treatment for NSSI disorder participated in baseline and 1-year follow-up assessments, including heat pain stimulation for the measurement of pain threshold and tolerance. Associations between PS and NSSI as well as BPD and depressive symptoms were examined using negative binomial, logistic, and linear regression analyses. RESULTS: We found that a decrease in pain threshold over time was associated with reduced NSSI (incident rate ratio = 2.04, p = 0.047) and that higher pain tolerance at baseline predicted lower probability for NSSI (odds ratio = 0.42, p = 0.016) 1 year later. However, the latter effect did not survive Holm correction (p = 0.059). No associations between PS and BPD or depressive symptoms were observed. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that pain threshold might normalize with a decrease in NSSI frequency and could thus serve as a state marker for NSSI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Odour discrimination and identification (DI) are markers associated with disability worsening and neuroaxonal damage in multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this research is to investigate whether longitudinal change of DI predicts long-term MS disease course. METHODS: This is a 6-year prospective longitudinal study on MS patients at the MS Clinic Innsbruck. Clinical, bi-annual visits assessed patients' history and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score. DI and cognitive function were assessed at baseline (BL), Year 1 (Y1), Year 2 (Y2) and Year 6 (Y6) by the 'Sniffin' Sticks'/Symbol Digit Modalities Test. RESULTS: Around 92 of 139 patients were available for Y6 follow-up. Mean DI scores significantly decreased over time (BL = 27.8, Y1 = 27.5, Y2 = 26.3 and Y6 = 26.3; p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with patients' age (rs = -0.120, p = 0.032) and disease duration (rs = -0.103, p = 0.041). Multivariable regression analyses revealed that lower absolute DI scores and larger DI score loss over time were associated with higher probability of EDSS worsening (per -1 point: hazard ratio (HR) = 1.40 (1.16-1.68) and 2.34 (1.27-4.21)), progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) (HR = 1.49 (1.20-1.85) and 2.22 (1.33-3.31)) and cognitive deterioration (HR = 1.75 (1.35-2.27) and 4.29 (1.26-2.84)) at Y6, but not with time to first relapse. CONCLUSION: Odour DI is an irreversible marker of neuroaxonal damage, associated with PIRA, cognitive deterioration and EDSS worsening.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Employing a rebaselining concept may reduce noise in retinal layer thinning measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: From an ongoing prospective observational study, we included patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS), who had OCT scans at disease-modifying treatment (DMT) start (baseline), 6-12 months after baseline (rebaseline), and ⩾12 months after rebaseline. Mean annualized percent loss (aL) rates (%/year) were calculated both from baseline and rebaseline for peripapillary-retinal-nerve-fiber-layer (aLpRNFLbaseline/aLpRNFLrebaseline) and macular-ganglion-cell-plus-inner-plexiform-layer (aLGCIPLbaseline/aLGCIPLrebaseline) by mixed-effects linear regression models. RESULTS: We included 173 RMS patients (mean age 31.7 years (SD 8.8), 72.8% female, median disease duration 15 months (12-94) median baseline-to-last-follow-up-interval 37 months (18-71); 56.6% moderately effective DMT (M-DMT), 43.4% highly effective DMT (HE-DMT)). Both mean aLpRNFLbaseline and aLGCIPLbaseline significantly increased in association with relapse (0.51% and 0.26% per relapse, p < 0.001, respectively) and disability worsening (1.10% and 0.48%, p < 0.001, respectively) before baseline, but not with DMT class. Contrarily, neither aLpRNFLrebaseline nor aLGCIPLrebaseline was dependent on relapse or disability worsening before baseline, while HE-DMT significantly lowered aLpRNFLrebaseline (by 0.31%, p < 0.001) and aLGCIPLrebaseline (0.25%, p < 0.001) compared with M-DMT. CONCLUSIONS: Applying a rebaselining concept significantly improves differentiation of DMT effects on retinal layer thinning by avoiding carry-over confounding from previous disease activity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurological disorders constitute a significant portion of the global disease burden, affecting >30% of the world's population. This prevalence poses a substantial threat to global health in the foreseeable future. A lack of awareness regarding this high burden of neurological diseases has led to their underrecognition, underappreciation, and insufficient funding. Establishing a strategic and comprehensive research agenda for brain-related studies is a crucial step towards aligning research objectives among all pertinent stakeholders and fostering greater societal awareness. METHODS: A scoping literature review was undertaken by a working group from the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) to identify any existing research agendas relevant to neurology. Additionally, a specialized survey was conducted among all EAN scientific panels, including neurologists and patients, inquiring about their perspectives on the current research priorities and gaps in neurology. RESULTS: The review revealed the absence of a unified, overarching brain research agenda. Existing research agendas predominantly focus on specialized topics within neurology, resulting in an imbalance in the number of agendas across subspecialties. The survey indicated a prioritization of neurological disorders and research gaps. CONCLUSIONS: Building upon the findings from the review and survey, key components for a strategic and comprehensive neurological research agenda in Europe were delineated. This research agenda serves as a valuable prioritization tool for neuroscientific researchers, as well as for clinicians, donors, and funding agencies in the field of neurology. It offers essential guidance for creating a roadmap for research and clinical advancement, ultimately leading to heightened awareness and reduced burden of neurological disorders.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The rapidly evolving landscape of effective treatment options in multiple sclerosis has led to a shift of treatment objectives towards a treat-to-target approach aiming to suppress disease activity below the level of detectability early during the disease. To enable treat-to-target, a thorough reappraisal of available outcome measures with respect to their ability in this regard is required. METHODS: To that end, we conducted a comprehensive systematic literature review of more than 1000 studies using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) 2020 methodology focusing on underlying evidence as well as utility and implementability in clinical practice. RESULTS: From there, we propose a set of measurable outcomes for everyday routine clinical practice as well as advanced/aspirational measurables requiring additional resources. We also outline remaining knowledge/technology gaps that need to be overcome to enable a treat-to-target approach. CONCLUSIONS: This work provides the basis for an evidence-based definition of outcome targets for relevant stakeholders and regulatory authorities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the coming decades, the world will face an increasing burden of neurological disorders (ND) and an urgent need to promote brain health. These challenges contrast with an insufficient neurological workforce in most countries, as well as decreasing numbers of general neurologists and neurologists attracted to work in general neurology (GN). This white paper aims to review the current situation of GN and reflect on its future. METHODS: The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) task force (TF) met nine times between November 2021 and June 2023. During the 2023 EAN annual meeting, attendees were asked to answer five questions concerning the future of GN. The document was sent for suggestions and eventually approval to the board and the presidents of the 47 national societies of the EAN. RESULTS: The TF first identified four relevant current and future challenges related to GN: (i) definition, (ii) practice, (iii) education, and (iv) research. The TF then identified seven initiatives to further develop GN at both the academic and community level. Finally, the TF formulated 16 recommendations to promote GN in the future. CONCLUSIONS: GN will remain essential in the coming decades to provide rapid, accessible, and comprehensive management of patients with ND that is affordable and cost-effective. There is also a need for research, education, and other initiatives aiming to facilitate improved working conditions, recognition, and prestige for those pursuing a career in GN.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) has adhered to the global plan for reducing the burden of neurological disorders and promoting brain health launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders. This study reports the results of an EAN survey among national neurological societies (NNSs) on their awareness of brain health policies. METHODS: The EAN survey on the current state of national brain health policies was conducted among the 47 presidents of the NNSs affiliated with the EAN, with the aim of developing the best strategy for close collaboration among stakeholders. RESULTS: From June 2023 to February 2024, 36/47 responses (77%) were collected. Among respondents, 67% were in contact with their Ministry of Health and 78% were aware of and in contact with one or more national neurological patient organisation, while 17% had no contacts with any association. Ninety-two percent declared a high to medium degree of awareness of the need to support brain health and of brain health plans and strategies in their country. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest good awareness of the importance of brain health and of the strategies implemented at the national level among the EAN-affiliated NNSs and representatives. Efforts towards improvement may be directed towards cooperation between NNSs and political institutions, as well as patient organisations, to optimise brain and global public health and neurological care in each country.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Centers for training in autonomic nervous system (ANS) disorders are not widely available and the recent coronavirus 2019 pandemic temporarily reduced training opportunities in autonomic medicine across European countries. Here we evaluated the current state of education, clinical skills and postgraduate educational preferences on ANS disorders of European neurology residents and consultants. METHODS: A 23-item questionnaire was developed and distributed online amongst European neurology residents and consultants via mailing lists of the European Academy of Neurology. The questions assessed demographics, current training opportunities and learning preferences in ANS disorders. Six multiple-choice questions were used to self-evaluate knowledge of ANS disorders. RESULTS: In all, 285 individuals answered the survey (60% female, mostly 25-34 years of age). All respondents considered clinical autonomic skills necessary for good clinical neurological practice, and 92% would like to increase their ANS knowledge. Female respondents and those who trained in Southern/Eastern/Greater Europe more frequently judged ANS skills important for clinical practice than male respondents (p = 0.012) and respondents from Northern/Western Europe (p = 0.011). Female and younger respondents felt less confident in managing ANS disorders (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Respondents below 45 years of age (p < 0.001) and those with lower confidence in managing ANS disorders (p = 0.004) were more likely to recommend that ANS education is embedded in the residency curriculum. CONCLUSIONS: Most European neurology residents and consultants reported a need for more autonomic education, with additional gender, age and regional differences. These findings underscore the importance of increasing the educational content on autonomic medicine in European medical and postgraduate curricula.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Limited research exists on intervention efficacy for comorbid subclinical anxiety and depressive disorders, despite their common co-occurrence. Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) are promising to reach individuals facing subclinical symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a transdiagnostic and self-tailored IMI in reducing subclinical anxiety and depressive symptom severity with either individualized (IG-IMI) or automated (AG-IMI) guidance compared to a waitlist control group with care-as-usual access (WLC). METHODS: Participants included 566 adults with subclinical anxiety (GAD-7 ≥ 5) and/or depressive (CES-D ≥16) symptoms, who did not meet criteria for a full-syndrome depressive or anxiety disorder. In a three-arm randomized clinical trial, participants were randomized to a cognitive behavioral 7-session IMI plus booster session with IG-IMI (n = 186) or AG-IMI (n = 189) or WLC (n = 191). Primary outcomes included observer-rated anxiety (HAM-A) and depressive (QIDS) symptom severity 8 weeks after randomization assessed by blinded raters via telephone. Follow-up outcomes at 6 and 12 months are reported. RESULTS: Symptom severity was significantly lower with small to medium effects in IG-IMI (anxiety: d = 0.45, depression: d = 0.43) and AG-IMI (anxiety: d = 0.31, depression: d = 0.32) compared to WLC. No significant differences emerged between guidance formats in primary outcomes. There was a significant effect in HAM-A after 6 months favoring AG-IMI. On average, participants completed 85.38% of IG-IMI and 77.38% of AG-IMI. CONCLUSIONS: A transdiagnostic, self-tailored IMI can reduce subclinical anxiety and depressive symptom severity, but 12-month long-term effects were absent. Automated guidance holds promise for enhancing the scalability of IMIs in broad prevention initiatives.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Increasing interest has centered on the psychotherapeutic working alliance as a means of understanding clinical change in digital mental health interventions in recent years. However, little is understood about how and to what extent a digital mental health program can have an impact on the working alliance and clinical outcomes in a blended (therapist plus digital program) cognitive behavioral therapy (bCBT) intervention for depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the difference in working alliance scores between bCBT and treatment as usual (TAU), examine the association between working alliance and depression severity scores in both arms, and test for an interaction between system usability and working alliance with regard to the association between working alliance and depression scores in bCBT at 3-month assessments. METHODS: We conducted a secondary data analysis of the E-COMPARED (European Comparative Effectiveness Research on Blended Depression Treatment versus Treatment-as-usual) trial, which compared bCBT with TAU across 9 European countries. Data were collected in primary care and specialized services between April 2015 and December 2017. Eligible participants aged 18 years or older and diagnosed with major depressive disorder were randomized to either bCBT (n=476) or TAU (n=467). bCBT consisted of 6-20 sessions of bCBT (involving face-to-face sessions with a therapist and an internet-based program). TAU consisted of usual care for depression. The main outcomes were scores of the working alliance (Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised-Client [WAI-SR-C]) and depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]) at 3 months after randomization. Other variables included system usability scores (System Usability Scale-Client [SUS-C]) at 3 months and baseline demographic information. Data from baseline and 3-month assessments were analyzed using linear regression models that adjusted for a set of baseline variables. RESULTS: Of the 945 included participants, 644 (68.2%) were female, and the mean age was 38.96 years (IQR 38). bCBT was associated with higher composite WAI-SR-C scores compared to TAU (B=5.67, 95% CI 4.48-6.86). There was an inverse association between WAI-SR-C and PHQ-9 in bCBT (B=-0.12, 95% CI -0.17 to -0.06) and TAU (B=-0.06, 95% CI -0.11 to -0.02), in which as WAI-SR-C scores increased, PHQ-9 scores decreased. Finally, there was a significant interaction between SUS-C and WAI-SR-C with regard to an inverse association between higher WAI-SR-C scores and lower PHQ-9 scores in bCBT (b=-0.030, 95% CI -0.05 to -0.01; P=.005). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first study to show that bCBT may enhance the client working alliance when compared to evidence-based routine care for depression that services reported offering. The working alliance in bCBT was also associated with clinical improvements that appear to be enhanced by good program usability. Our findings add further weight to the view that the addition of internet-delivered CBT to face-to-face CBT may positively augment experiences of the working alliance. RESUMO

The present study aimed to examine the association between the presence, number, and type of positive psychotic symptoms (PPS) and clinical severity in adolescent patients. Five hundred-six patients aged 11-17 years were assigned to either the noPPS (n = 341), the delusional beliefs only (del; n = 32), the hallucinations only (hall; n = 80), or the delusional beliefs and hallucinations (del&hall; n = 53) group. Generalized Structural Equation Modeling was applied to identify the best-fitting model representing clinical severity indicated by psychiatric diagnoses, depressivity, personality pathology, non-suicidal self-injury, suicide attempts, perceived stress, and psychosocial impairments, assessed by interviews and questionnaires. The groups were compared concerning the final model's factors. The final model consisted of three factors representing psychopathology and functional impairments, self-harming behavior, and perceived stress (BIC difference to reference model: 103.99). Participants with any PPS scored higher on all factors than the noPPS group (differences in SD: 0.49-1.48). Additionally, the del&hall group scored 1.31 SD higher on psychopathology and functional impairments than the hall group, and 1.16 SD higher on self-harming behavior compared to the del group. Finally, the hall group scored 0.84 SD higher on self-harming behavior than the del group, with no group differences in the other factors. In adolescent patients, the presence of PPS may represent a marker for a more severe form of mental disorder, with hallucinations being indicative of self-harming behavior. Early transdiagnostic assessment of PPS seems indicated as it may inform treatment in the context of clinical staging.

RESUMO

Web-based interventions can be effective in treating depressive symptoms. Patients with risk not responding to treatment have been identified by early change patterns. This study aims to examine whether early changes are superior to baseline parameters in predicting long-term outcome. In a randomized clinical trial with 409 individuals experiencing mild to moderate depressive symptoms using the web-based intervention deprexis, three latent classes were identified (early response after registration, early response after screening and early deterioration) based on early change in the first four weeks of the intervention. Baseline variables and these classes were included in a Stepwise Cox Proportional Hazard Multiple Regression to identify predictors associated with the onset of remission over 36-months. Early change class was a significant predictor of remission over 36 months. Compared to early deterioration after screening, both early response after registration and after screening were associated with a higher likelihood of remission. In sensitivity and secondary analyses, only change class consistently emerged as a predictor of long-term outcome. Early improvement in depression symptoms predicted long-term outcome and those showing early improvement had a higher likelihood of long-term remission. These findings suggest that early changes might be a robust predictor for long-term outcome beyond baseline parameters.

RESUMO

During the last 20 years, many digital interventions in psychotherapy have been developed and tested for a wide range of clinical problems. Digital interventions expand the range of treatment options and reach people who are unable or unwilling to take part in traditional psychotherapy. This article sheds light on various forms of digital interventions, such as unguided and guided self-help interventions, blended treatments, and video-based therapy, the practical use of Digital Health Applications (DiGA) in Germany, and the current state of research in digital interventions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, the phenomenon of loneliness has received increasing attention. Loneliness is widespread and can have adverse consequences for mental and physical health if prolonged. Internet-based interventions (IBIs) for self-help have proven to be effective for a variety of psychological disorders. Due to several specific aspects, IBIs are also a relevant option for loneliness. This systematic review aims to present the current research on self-help IBIs for reducing loneliness. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in the databases Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, MedLine, PsycIndex, Cochrane Library and PsyArXiv between December 2023 and early January 2024. We included original German or English studies that addressed IBIs for self-help to reduce loneliness. RESULTS: In total, eight studies published between 2017 and 2024 were included in the qualitative analysis. All studies were conducted in high-income countries, included predominantly well-educated female adults and were mostly satisfactory regarding their internal validity. DISCUSSION: The results of this review suggest that self-help IBIs may be a promising option for alleviating loneliness. However, the work also points to the need for further research. Future studies should consider larger samples and people of different ages, genders and education levels in order to generalise the results of the present review.

RESUMO

The fate of photogenerated charges within ferroelectric metal oxides is key for photocatalytic applications. The authors study the contributions of i) tetragonal distortion, responsible for spontaneous polarization, and ii) point defects, on charge separation and recombination within BaTiO3 (BTO) nanocrystals of cubic and tetragonal structure. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) in combination with O2 photoadsorption experiments show that BTO nanocrystals annealed at 600 °C have a charge separation yield enhanced by a factor > 10 compared to TiO2 anatase nanocrystals of similar geometries. This demonstrates for the first time the beneficial effect of the BTO perovskite nanocrystal lattice on charge separation. Strikingly, charge separation is considerably hindered within BTO nanoparticles annealed ≥ 600 °C, due to the formation of Ba-O divacancies that act as charge recombination centers. The opposing interplay between tetragonal distortion and annealing-induced defect formation inside the lattice highlights the importance of defect engineering within perovskite nanoparticles.
