RESUMO

We introduce a new distribution for modeling extreme events about frequency analysis called modified Burr IV (MBIV) distribution. We derive the MBIV distribution on the basis of the generalized Pearson differential equation. The proposed model turns out to be flexible: its density function can be symmetrical, right-skewed, left-skewed, J and bimodal shaped. Its hazard rate has shapes such as bathtub and modified bathtub, increasing, decreasing, and increasing-decreasing-increasing. To show the importance of the MBIV distribution, we establish various mathematical properties such as random number generator, sub-models, moments related properties, inequality measures, reliability measures, uncertainty measures and characterizations. We utilize the maximum likelihood estimation technique to estimate the model parameters. We assess the behavior of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of the MBIV parameters via a simulation study. Five data sets related to frequency analysis are considered to elucidate the significance of the MBIV distribution. We show that the MBIV model is the best model to analyze data for hydrological events, motivating its high level of adaptability in the applied setting.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (diagnosed and undiagnosed), impaired fasting glucose and possible risk factors for diabetes mellitus among Pakistani population. METHODS: This cross sectional study was performed in Rawalpindi which is one of the cities in Northern Punjab of Pakistan in July 2008. An area was selected in Rawalpindi city, with mixed population representative of almost all provinces with different socioeconomic groups. Three hundred and thirteen houses were selected through systematic random sampling technique and fasting blood glucose was obtained and subjects were labeled to have diabetes according to WHO criteria of diagnosing diabetes mellitus. The statistical analysis was performed by using Stata version 10. RESULTS: There were 1091 respondents who were selected after cleaning the data, among them 293 were males and 798 were females. Of the total 15.41% of the males and 12.31% of females were found to have diabetes mellitus. Thus making a total prevalence of 13.14%. Impaired fasting glucose (IFG) was found in 5.14% males and 5.78% females making a total prevalence of 5.61%. Over all (DM & IFG) was found to be 20.55% in males and 18.09% in females. The main risk factors identified were obesity, family history, hypertension and increasing age. CONCLUSION: There is an increased prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in Pakistan and main risk factors identified were obesity, overweight, family history of diabetes mellitus, and hypertension.

RESUMO

In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. We verify the potentiality of the BXII-ME model via monthly actual taxes revenue and fatigue life applications.
