RESUMO

Coumarins, methylene blue derivatives, as well as related functional organic dyes have become prevalent tools in life sciences and biomedicine. Their intense blue fluorescence emission makes them ideal agents for a range of applications, yet an unwanted facet of the interesting biological properties of such probes presents a simultaneous environmental threat due to inherent toxicity and persistence in aqueous media. As such, significant research efforts now ought to focus on their removal from the environment, and the sustainable trapping onto widely available, water dispersible and processable adsorbent structures such as graphene oxides could be advantageous. Additionally, flat and aromatic bis(thiosemicarbazones) (BTSCs) have shown biocompatibility and chemotherapeutic potential, as well as intrinsic fluorescence, hence traceability in the environment and in living systems. A new palette of graphene oxide-based hierarchical supramolecular materials incorporating BTSCs were prepared, characterised, and reported hereby. We report on the supramolecular entrapping of several flat, aromatic fluorogenic molecules onto graphene oxide on basis of non-covalent interactions, by virtue of their structural features with potential to form aromatic stacks and H-bonds. The evaluations of the binding interactions in solution by between organic dyes (methylene blue and functional coumarins) and new graphene oxide-anchored Zn(ii) derivatised bis(thiosemicarbazones) nanohybrids were carried out by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies.

RESUMO

With the ageing population, the prevalence of dementia is increasing worldwide. There is an emphasis on early, timely diagnosis and treatment options for people with a dementia yet wait times from referral to diagnosis have increased. Neuroimaging performed by radiologists is utilised to support dementia diagnosis and some patients will already have a CT scan from a pre-existing condition such as stroke. The purpose of this commentary is to consider whether ACPs who specialise in dementia, are perfectly placed to re-report on pre-existing neuroimages to support the clinical diagnosis of dementia.

RESUMO

Background: Mobile applications (apps) present a new opportunity to study menstrual cycles and time to pregnancy. Understanding the characteristics of cycle tracking app users is important to evaluate the feasibility of recruiting participants for preconception research. Methods: Users of a cycle tracking smartphone app, Ovia Fertility, aged 18 or older in the U.S. were randomly invited via email to complete a "fertility research" questionnaire that included demographic and reproductive characteristics. Among those attempting pregnancy without medical assistance, attempt duration, factors influencing pregnancy planning, health history and behaviors while attempting to conceive were queried. Respondents could choose to enter a raffle for a $50 gift card. Results: Initially, 639 people responded to the demographics portion of the survey representing 49 states and Washington DC. Of these, 344 (54%) were trying to conceive and of those, 297 (86%) were not using medical treatments. Of those not trying to conceive, 12% reported that they planned to start in the next 3 months. Most participants were ages 26-35 (63%), of White race (70%), reported non-Hispanic ethnicity (87%), had at least a bachelor's degree (56%) and an income between $50,000 and $200,000 (58%). One-third were of recommended BMI (35%), 24% overweight, and 41% obese. Most participants reported no fertility-related health conditions (58%). Forty-eight participants (17%) had been trying to conceive for 1 month or less, 88 (31%) had been trying for 2 months or less, and 122 (43%) for 3 months or less. Interruptions in pregnancy attempts were common, 31% reported periods without intercourse. Of those attempting pregnancy, 47% of partners completed their own questionnaire. Conclusion: This first-of its-kind analysis describes users of a cycle-tracking smartphone app who could be eligible for recruitment to a prospective time-to-pregnancy study. Survey respondents were diverse with respect to geographic location, BMI, and income. However, special recruitment efforts will be needed to recruit participants and partners who identify as other than non-Hispanic White. Participants with fertility-related conditions are not overly represented among app users who are trying to conceive. Targeting and pre-enrolling app users who are planning to begin a pregnancy attempt in the next 3 months may be an advantage of app-based recruitment.

RESUMO

The objective of this research was to evaluate the association between menstrual cycle characteristics (cycle length, cycle-length variability, and their interaction) and the amount of time it takes women to conceive using a robust multiple linear regression. Participants downloaded Ovia Fertility in 2015 indicated that they had just started trying to conceive, and reported conception within 12 months (n = 45,360, adjusted model n = 8835). The average time to conception among women in the adjusted model was 3.94 months (n = 8835). Women with normal cycle lengths (27-29 days) conceived more quickly than women with cycle lengths of 25-26 days (+0.41 months; p < 0.001), 30-31 days (+0.27 months; p < 0.01), 32-33 days (+0.44 months; p < 0.001), and 34+ days (+0.75 months; p < 0.001). Women with regular cycle-length variability (<9 days between cycles) conceived more quickly than women with irregular variability (+0.72 months; p < 0.001). Results of the interaction analysis indicated that, among women with regular cycle-length variability, those with normal cycle length had shorter time to conception than women with either short or long cycle length. The interaction between cycle length and cycle-length variability provided enhanced insights into the amount of time it takes to conceive, compared to either indicator alone.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: There is limited understanding about parent perspectives of newborn development after assisted reproductive technology (ART). The use of ART is known to increase the risk of premature delivery and low birth weight. Both of these factors are associated with developmental delay. To our knowledge, no study has investigated how parents perceive their child's development after use of ART. AIMS: To investigate how the parent perspective of childhood development after ART use compares to the parent perspective of spontaneously conceived children. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is a digital survey collecting data on parent perspective of newborn development after ART and spontaneous conception. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Invitation to participate was sent via E-mail to users of a (Ovia Health's) mobile parenting application (Ovia Parenting). Surveys were collected from August 30, 2018, to September 12, 2018, and a total of 1881 surveys were collected. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Analysis was performed with Chi-square cross-tabulations and ANOVA. RESULTS: Overall, 13,600 (12%) of users who were delivered the E-mail engaged with the content. Of those users, 2739 (20%) initiated the survey and 1881 (69%) completed the survey and were included in the analyses. When comparing spontaneous conception to ART, parents reported similar developmental milestones at most ages. A significant difference existed at 12 months where those who had used ART were more likely to report their child met all milestones. This difference did not persist for subsequent ages. CONCLUSIONS: From the parent perspective, children conceived using ART methods should be expected to meet the same age-based developmental milestones as their spontaneously conceived peers.
