RESUMO

AIMS: This integrative review aimed to synthesize evidence about the patients' experiences during the planned perioperative care pathway. DESIGN: Integrative review. DATA SOURCES: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline Ovid, Scopus, and American Psychological Association (APA) PsychINFO. Original, peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2012 and 2023 exploring patient experiences during the planned perioperative care pathway were reviewed. METHODS: This review was guided by the Whittemore and Knafl method and followed PRISMA guidelines to search the literature. Twenty-two articles were selected for the final study. RESULTS: Three themes emerged: Sharing of information is empowering; interpersonal relationships are valued by patients, and hospital systems and care co-ordination influence the patient experience. CONCLUSIONS: The quality and consistency of the information patients receive can both support and undermine patient confidence in health professionals. The quality of relationships that participants experience and effective communication with health professionals can support or compromise the quality of the patients' perioperative experience. The nature of the hospital systems and care co-ordination in hospital has implications for the quality of recovery from surgery. IMPACT: This review evaluates whether national and international health services and organizations, adhering to the WHO guidelines, have developed and implemented intentionally focused perioperative care with the aims to achieving effective and sustainable surgical outcomes through increased patient satisfaction. After a 5-day protein-depletion diet, there is a 23% decrease in kidney protein content in mice. When mice are shifted to a normal diet, protein mass is restored to its normal value 15 h after the nutritional change. The mechanism for this protein-depleted mice have a protein synthesis efficiency in vivo equal to 71% of that in normal kidneys, and normal values were reached within 6 h after the nutritional shift; 2) protein degradation rates were estimated either from the difference between the synthesis of kidney proteins and the net protein increase or by the disappearance of radioactivity from kidney proteins previously labeled by the administration of NaH14CO3 to mice. By both procedures, a large decrease in protein degradation rates during the recovery through a complete diet was observed.

In the kidney of 5-day protein-depleted mice there is a decrease of 23% in the rRNA mass. When these animals are fed with a complete diet, rRNA content is restored to its normal value after 24 h of refeeding. The mechanisms that underlie this phenomenon were studied. It was found that the activity of rRNA polymerase I in the nuclei of kidneys from refed mice showed an increase of about twofold compared with the activity in normal and protein-depleted nuclei. The in vivo incorporation of a large dose (nontrace) of [14C]orotic acid into rRNA was also twofold enhanced in kidneys from refed mice. Ribosome degradation (measured by the disappearance of radioactivity from either ribosomal proteins or rRNA previously labeled by the injection of NaH14CO3 and [14C]orotic acid to the mice, respectively) stopped during the 1st day after refeeding. The estimation of the difference between the rRNA synthesis rate and the net rRNA increase also demonstrated a decrease in the rRNA degradation rate in refed mice.
