RESUMO
Microplastics (MPs) have already spread across the globe and have been found in drinking water and human tissues. This may pose severe threats to human health and water environment. Therefore, this study accurately evaluated the removal effect of metal-modified biochar on polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) (1.0 µm) in the water environment using a high-throughput fluorescence quantification method. The results indicated that Fe-modified biochar (FeBC) and Fe/Zn-modified biochar (Fe/ZnBC) had good removal efficiencies for PS-MPs under the dosage of 3 g/L, which were 96.24% and 84.77%, respectively. Although pore effects were observed (such as "stuck", "trapped"), the electrostatic interaction was considered the main mechanism for the adsorption of PS-MPs on metal-modified biochar, whereas the formation of metal-O-PS-MPs may also contribute to the adsorption process. The removal efficiency of PS-MPs by FeBC was significantly reduced under alkaline conditions (pH = 9 and 11) or in the presence of weak acid ions (PO43-, CO32-, HCO3-). A removal efficiency of 72.39% and 78.33% of PS-MPs was achieved from tap water (TW) and lake water (LW) using FeBC when the initial concentration was 20 mg/L. However, FeBC had no removal effect on PS-MPs in biogas slurry (BS) and brewing wastewater (BW) due to the direct competitive adsorption of high concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD). The findings of this study highlighted that metal-modified biochar had a potential application in purifying tap water or lake water which contaminated by MPs.

BACKGROUND: The application of Pickering emulsions stabilized by food-derived particles is of great interest, studies have focused on development of natural functional emulsifiers from agricultural byproducts. Dietary fiber (DF) has been recognizing for its excellent physiological functions. Moreover, physicochemical properties of pomelo peel DF (PDF) make it a potential emulsifier. However, pristine PDF is not suitable as emulsifier due to its compact physical structure and high hydrophobicity, which seriously limits its utilization. The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of cellulase on physicochemical properties of PDF and to illustrate the feasibility of cellulase modified PDF (MPDF) as natural functional emulsifier. RESULTS: Cellulase modification significantly improved (P < 0.05) specific surface area, water-holding capacity/oil-holding capacity, viscoelasticity, hydrophobicity, and pore structure while decreased crystallinity index and particle size of PDF. Emulsion could remain stable over 30 days as MPDF concentrations up to 1 wt% and oil/water ratio 3:7. The appearance stability of emulsions was not influenced by temperature (4-60 °C), pH (3.0-12.0), and ion concentration (0-200 mmol L-1 ) which was similar to Pickering emulsions. The mechanism of MPDF as an emulsifier was mainly attributed to the combination of Pickering effect and the three-dimensional network. In addition, MPDF showed higher antioxidant capacity in emulsions than other classical emulsifiers. CONCLUSION: The results illustrated that MPDF has a favorable feasibility for preparation of stable Pickering-type emulsions, which will be a practical support for application of PDF as a natural functional emulsifier and will be helpful to realize the resource utilization of DF in pomelo industries. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

The recovery of ammonia-nitrogen during wastewater treatment and water purification is increasingly critical in energy and economic development. The concentration of ammonia-nitrogen in wastewater is different depending on the type of wastewater, making it challenging to select ammonia-nitrogen recovery technology. Meanwhile, the conventional nitrogen removal method wastes ammonia-nitrogen resources. Based on the circular economy, this review comprehensively introduces the characteristics of several main ammonia-nitrogen source wastewater plants and their respective challenges in treatment, including municipal wastewater, industrial wastewater, livestock and poultry wastewater and landfill leachate. Furthermore, we introduce the main methods currently adopted in the ammonia-nitrogen removal process of wastewater from physical (air stripping, ion exchange and adsorption, membrane and capacitive deionization), chemical (chlorination, struvite precipitation, electrochemical oxidation and photocatalysis) and biological (classical and typical activated sludge, novel methods based on activated sludge, microalgae and photosynthetic bacteria) classification based on the ammonia recovery concept. We discuss the applicable methods of recovering ammonia nitrogen in several main wastewater plants. Finally, we prospect the research direction of ammonia removal and recovery in wastewater based on sustainable development.

C-phycocyanin (C-PC) is a natural high-value blue phycobiliprotein from Spirulina platensis, which has wide biological applications in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics. However, the freshness of S. platensis powder (SPP) materials and C-PC purification play critical roles in evaluating the stability and bioactivities of C-PC, which severely affect its commercial application. This study investigated the effect of spray-dried SPP freshness on the biofunctional activities of analytical grade C-PC (AGC-PC). The yield of AGC-PC extracted from spray-dried SPP could reach 101.88 mg/g (75% recovery ratio) after purification by reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) system. The half-life period (t1/2 ) of AGC-PC stability at 60°C and 8000 lux light could remain 171.70 min and 176.11 h within 6 months storage of spray-dried SPP. The emulsifying activity index (EAI) and foaming capacity (FC) of AGC-PC from fresh-dried SPP showed maximum values of 68.64 m2 /g and 252.9%, respectively. The EC50 of AGC-PC from fresh spray-dried SPP on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline -6-sulfonic acid (ABTS+·) scavenging activity could reach 63.76 and 92.93 mg/L, respectively. The EC50 of AGC-PC from fresh spray-dried SPP on proteinase inhibition and anti-lipoxygenase activity were 302.96 and 178.8 mg/L, respectively. The stability and biofunctional activities of AGC-PC remained stable within 6 months storage of SPP, and then rapidly decreased after 9 months storage due to the disintegration of the trimeric (αß)3 and hexameric (αß)6 forms of C-PC. It is concluded that the optimal storage period of SPP for preparation of AGC-PC in commercial use should be less than 6 months. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The C-phycocyanin (C-PC) from dried Spirulina platensis powder (SPP) has been widely applied in food nutritional, florescent markers, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc, due to its blue color, fluorescence, and antioxidant properties. However, the effect of dried SPP freshness on the stability and functional activity of C-PC has been rarely reported. This study found that the thermostability, photostability, emulsifying, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities of analytical grade C-PC (AGC-PC) significantly decreased after 6 months storage of SPP. Based on investigations, we have proposed that the suitable storage time of dried SPP for preparation of AGC-PC in commercial application should be within 6 months.

The dried cell weight (DCW) of Spirulina platensis gradually decreased from 1.52 g/L to 1.18 g/L after five cultivation cycles. Intracellular polysaccharide (IPS) and exopolysaccharide (EPS) content both increased with increased cycle number and duration. IPS content was higher than EPS content. Maximum IPS yield (60.61 mg/g) using thermal high-pressure homogenization was achieved after three homogenization cycles at 60 MPa and an S/I ratio of 1:30. IPS showed a more fibrous, porous, and looser structure, and had a higher glucose content and Mw (272.85 kDa) compared with EPS, which may be indicative of IPS's higher viscosity and water holding capacity. Although both carbohydrates were acidic, EPS had stronger acidity and thermal stability than IPS; this was accompanied by differences in monosaccharide. IPS exhibited the highest DPPH (EC50 = 1.77 mg/mL) and ABTS (EC50 = 0.12 mg/mL) radical scavenging capacity, in line with IPS's higher total phenol content, while simultaneously showing the lowest HO⢠scavenging and ferrous ion chelating capacities; thus characterizing IPS as a superior antioxidant and EPS as a stronger metal ion chelator.

The extensive application of plastic products leads to the increasingly significant harm of plastic wastes to the ecological environment, which is also a focus of global environmental issues. Due to the lack of a sound plastic waste management system, most plastic waste is still treated by the traditional mode or remains in the environment, with low recycling efficiency, and the plastic life cycle has not yet formed. Plastics in the environment will age and degrade under the actions of physical (wear, waves), chemical (ultraviolet radiation, hydrolysis), and biological (fungi, bacteria) factors for a long time and generate micro (nano) plastics. Due to their small particle size, large specific surface area, and charged characteristics, in addition to their own toxicity, they can also be used as carriers or covert carriers of pollutants (heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, bacteria, etc.) to migrate in the environment through runoff, sewage discharge, and hydrometeorology, causing ecological environmental pollution. MPs pollution has been listed as the second largest scientific problem in the field of environmental and ecological science by the United Nations Environment Programme. MPs are widely distributed, and there are different degrees of MPs pollution in the global water (freshwater, ocean), soil, and atmospheric environment. Traces of MPs have also been found in human placentas, human breastmilk, living lungs, and blood in recent years. Therefore, the formation mechanisms of MPs under the actions of physics, chemistry, and microorganisms, as well as their abundance levels and migration characteristics in water, soil, and atmosphere environment were comprehensively reviewed, with the hope of providing reference for monitoring the pollution levels of MPs in the environment, exploring their transport laws in the environment, proposing the management strategy of MPs pollution, and revealing the degradation mechanisms of MPs under different effects.

Improving the efficiency of hydrolytic acidification is critical for methane production from agricultural waste. This study is the first to apply domesticated paddy soil microbes to (DPSM) enhance the hydrolytic acidification of rice straw (RS) and pig manure (PM) to obtain acidizing fluid for anaerobic digestion (AD). At a substrate concentration of 20%, the inoculation of an RS-PM mixture (1:3) with 35% DPSM degraded the volatile solids by 48.1% and yielded 6.8 g/L of volatile fatty acids and 4.7 g/L of acetic acid after seven days of hydrolytic acidification. After 10 days of subsequent AD, the cumulative methane production of the acidizing fluid was 304.96 mL/g COD, similar (P ï¼ 0.05) to the control (318.27 mL/g COD). However, the methane production time decreased by 43.4% (from 30 to 17 days), thereby improving the AD efficiency. Inoculation with DPSM is therefore an effective pre-treatment for agricultural waste for methane production.

The aim of this study was to investigate the hydrolysis of rice straw (RS) using domesticated paddy soil microbes (DPSMs) with swine wastewater (SW) as the nitrogen source and the multiple hydrolyses for CH4 production via liquid anaerobic digestion (L-AD). Three hydrolyses of RS with a 45% inoculation ratio (IR) under the conditions of a carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N ratio) of 40, temperature of 37 °C, inoculum/substrate ratio (I/S ratio) of 2:1, and immersion depth of 6.0 cm were optimal, attaining maximum volatile fatty acids (VFAs) after five days, possibly owing to the synergistic effect of aerobic microbes (Firmicutes and Actinomycetes) and anaerobic microbes (Bacteroidetes and Acidobacteria). After three hydrolyses, the degradation rates of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin in RS were 88.45%, 83.19% and 70.09%, respectively. The accumulative CH4 production reached 462.11 mL/g VS after three hydrolyses, and its curve fitted well with the modified Gompertz model (R2 > 0.984).

This study aimed to investigate the changes of swine and dairy manure characteristics during a long-term storage (150-180 days) under 4 °C, 20 °C, and 37 °C, sealed and unsealed conditions. Water extractable phosphorus (WEP) of both manures rapidly increased during the first 15-30 days and then decreased. At the end of the storage, the WEP reduction was 90%±3% and 71%±5% of the initial concentration for swine manure and dairy manure, respectively. Generally, unsealed storage and higher temperatures led to more WEP reduction. This study suggested that manure stored for less than 30 days had the highest P runoff potential, while a long-term manure storage reduced P runoff potential compared to freshly excreted manure.

As a group of green biocatalysts, fungal laccases have aroused great interest in diverse biotechnological fields. Therein, yellow laccase has advantages over blue laccase in catalytic performance, but it is not common in the reported fungal laccases. Here, we report a yellow laccase from white-rot fungus Coriolopsis gallica NCULAC F1 about its production, purification, characterization, and application. Laccase production in the co-fermentation of pomelo peel and wheat bran reached the enzyme activity by 10,690 U/L after 5 days with a 13.58-time increase. After three steps of purification, laccase increased the specific activity from 30.78 to 188.79 U/mg protein with an activity recovery of 45.64%. The purified C. gallica laccase (CGLac) showed a molecular mass of about 57 kDa. CGLac had a yellow color and no absorption peaks at 610 nm and 330 nm, suggesting that it's a yellow laccase. CGLac exhibited stability towards temperature (40-60 °C) and neutral pH (6.0-8.0). Fe3+ and Mn2+ strongly stimulated CGLac activity by 162.56% and 226.05%, respectively. CGLac remained high activities when exposed to organic reagents and putative inhibitors. Additionally, CGLac contributed to 90.78%, 93.26%, and 99.66% removal of phenol, p-chlorophenol and bisphenol A after 120 min, respectively. In conclusion, a green efficient production strategy was introduced for fungal laccase, and the obtained CGLac presented great enzymatic properties and catalytic potential in the removal of phenolic pollutants.
RESUMO
Exopolysaccharides (EPS) produced by Arthrospira platensis (A. platensis) has been widely applied in industry and commerce for its various activities but the accumulation of EPS in culture medium may influence the growth of A. platensis reversely. This work aims to explore the impacts of initial pH, nitrogen source and concentration, phosphate concentration and recycle times of the culture medium on the growth of A. platensis and the secretion of its EPS. The results showed that EPS accumulated with the increase in recycle times of culture medium. The optimal initial pH for the growth of A. platensis was 8.50, and high pH of 11.5 inhibited the growth of biomass while resulting in highest EPS content of 92.87 mg/g DW. Excessive and limited nitrogen (NaNO3 of 25.00 g/L and NaNO3 < 2.50 g/L) and phosphate (K2HPO4 of 5.00 g/L and K2HPO4 < 0.50 g/L) inhibited the biomass production of A. platensis by 1.28−30.77% and 14.29−45.05%, respectively. EPS yield of 97.57 mg/g DW and 40.90 mg/g DW were obtained under NaNO3 of 25.00 g/L and K2HPO4 of 5.00 g/L due to salt stress. These findings are beneficial in providing a theoretical basis for high yield EPS from A. platensis without affecting biomass yield.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) poses a threat to health and compromises the immune system and gut microflora. The present study aimed to explore the effects of rice protein (RP) purified from rice dregs (RD) on acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and the underlying mechanisms. Results showed that RP treatment could alleviate the loss of body weight, colon shortening and injury, and the level of disease activity index, repair colonic function (claudin-1, ZO-1 and occludin), regulate inflammatory factors, and restore oxidative balance (malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capability (T-AOC)) in mice. Also, RP treatment could activate the Kelch-like ECH-associating protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathway, mediate the expression of downstream antioxidant protease (NQO-1, HO-1, and Gclc), regulate gut microbiota by enhancing the relative abundance of Akkermansia and increasing the value of F/B, and adjust short-chain fatty acid levels to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice. Thus, RP may be an effective therapeutic dietary resource for ulcerative colitis.

Inflammation is an important risk factor in the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). Accumulating evidence indicates that some phytochemicals have anti-cancer properties. Polysaccharides extracted from Albuca bracteata (AB) have been reported to possess anti-neoplastic activities on colorectal cancer (CRC) models. However, it is still unclear whether they exert therapeutic effects on colorectal cancer. In this study, we investigate the properties of polysaccharides of A. bracteate, named ABP. The average molecular weight of ABP was 18.3 kDa and ABP consisted of glucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, galacturonic acid, glucuronic acid at a molar ratio of 37.8:8:2.5:1.7:1:1. An Azoxymethane/Dextran sodium sulfate (AOM/DSS) induced CAC mouse model was established. The CAC mice treated with ABP showed smaller tumor size and lower tumor incidence than untreated ones. ABP increased anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10, inhibited secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α), mitigated oxidative stress by increasing GSH and decreasing MDA levels, suppressed the activation of STAT3 and expressions of its related genes c-Myc and cyclin D1. Moreover, ABP treatment increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria (f_Ruminococcaceae, g_Roseburia, g_Odoribacter, g_Oscillospira, and g_Akkermansia) and the levels of fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) in CAC model mice. In summary, our data suggest that ABP could be a potential therapeutic agent for treating CAC.
RESUMO
Rice straw (RS) is one of abundant agricultural waste for biogas production in China. However, the low carbon-methane conversion rate limits its wide application due to the low degradation rate of RS during fermentation. This study investigated the effect of acclimatized paddy soil microorganisms using swine wastewater on degradation of RS before anaerobic digestion. The total organic carbon, reducing sugar and NH4+-N content of paddy soil + RS + swine wastewater (PRS) (653.50 mg/L) was higher than that of other groups after 19 days. The carboxymethyl cellulose activity (4.01 IU), cellulose/lignin ratio (5.25) and the degradation rate of lignin (51.96%) in PRS were higher than those of other groups. The Firmicutes (21.02%), Chloroflexi (12.48%), Proteobacteria (20.92%), and Bacteroidetes (25.78%) were the main fermentation phyla in PRS during acclimatization. These results indicated that the acclimatized paddy soil microorganisms using swine wastewater (SW) could degrade RS more efficiently.

Chlortetracycline (CTC) usually presents in livestock wastewater with oxytetracycline (OTC), causing damage to human health and ecosystems. It's urgent to seek low-cost and ecofriendly technology for antibiotics removal. In this study, effects of CTC and CTC + OTC (CTC:OTC= 1:1, g/g) on Spirulina platensis have been investigated. EC50 value of CTC for S. platensis was 8.76 mg/L at 96 h and risk quotient value in wastewater was 15.85. Inhibition of CTC on S. platensis gradually enhanced with increase of CTC, but CTC + OTC below 1.0 mg/L didn't harm the growth of microalgae. Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and carotenoid content showed a parabolic trend with extension of time at CTC group. Chl-a synthesis gradually decreased with increase of CTC + OTC stress. High concentrations of CTC and CTC + OTC showed obvious inhibition on phycocyanin production. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) contents peaked at 1.0 mg/L CTC, corresponding to the minimum of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in S. platensis. SFA and PUFA contents decreased when CTC + OTC content was above 2.0 mg/L. CTC and CTC + OTC (both over 2.0 mg/L) stimulated production of dissolved extracellular organic matters in S. platensis. Removal efficiency of CTC by S. platensis was about 98.63-99.95% and its biodegradation pathways were hydroxylation and side-chain breakdown.

Improper cultivation can easily cause excessive nitrate accumulation in leafy vegetables, and the cooking processes used to prepare them can upset their nitrate/antioxidant balance, affecting their potential nitrite safety risk (PNSR). We investigated the impacts stir-frying, steaming, microwaving, and boiling on the nitrate, nitrite, and antioxidant capacity in water spinach and cabbage, and observed the impacts of storage duration on the PNSR. The antioxidant/in vivo nitrite ratio (A/N) was used to evaluate the nitrite risks in the cooked vegetables. Boiling achieved the highest A/N ratio (1.57) for water spinach, reducing the nitrate content by 25% without significantly affecting the antioxidant capacity. Stir-frying achieved the highest A/N ratio (6.55) for cabbage, increasing the antioxidant capacity by 140% without significantly affecting the nitrate content. Furthermore, it was found that the storage periods for boiled water spinach and stir-fried cabbage should not exceed 12 h and 24 h, respectively. Appropriate cooking methods and limited storage times are thus required for leafy vegetable to prevent adverse health effects.
RESUMO
High concentrations of pollutants in pig manure anaerobic digestate effluent (PMADE) can severely inhibit microalgal growth. In this study, two types of PMADE (PMADE-1, PMADE-2) were pretreated with indigenous bacteria which were selected from PMADE to alleviate their inhibition for the growth of Chlorella vulgaris. Indigenous bacteria could decrease 34.04% and 47.80% of total phosphorus (TP) and turbidity in PMADE-1, and 80.81%, 43.27%, and 57.51% of COD, TP, and turbidity in PMADE-2, respectively. And no significant reduction of NH4+-N in both PMADE after 5 days pretreatment occurred. C. vulgaris failed to grow in unpretreated PMADE-2. Pretreatment of PMADE with indigenous bacteria could remarkably promote nutrients removal and cell growth of C. vulgaris compared to the unpretreated PMADE. The order of abiotic stress in the studied PMADE was COD > NH4+-N > turbidity, and it is appropriate to pretreat the PMADE with indigenous bacteria for 2-3 days.

The high cost of carbon source limits the heterotrophic culture of Chlorella. In this study, broken rice was hydrolyzed into glucose. Then, the broken rice hydrolysate (BRH) was utilized for heterotrophic cultivation of C. vulgaris instead of glucose. Results showed that algal cells released H+ when they consumed NH4+, leading to a sharp decrease in pH. Growth inhibition by acid could be avoided by using a pH buffer. Adding alkaline reagents intermittently during culture could not only reduce the amount of pH stabilizer but also obtain increased biomass production. When using Tris as pH stabilizer, the biomass productivity of C. vulgaris in BRH was the largest (1.01 g/L/d), followed by NaOH (1.00 g/L/d), and Na2CO3 (0.95 g/L/d). Using BRH instead of glucose for heterotrophic cultivation of C. vulgaris could save 89.58% of the cost of culture medium. This study developed a novel strategy for cultivating C. vulgaris heterotrophically using BRH.

This study investigated the effects of temperature and volatile solids (VS) ratio of feedstock to inoculum (F/I ratio) on methane (CH4) production and the solubility of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), cooper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn) after anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure. The highest cumulative CH4 yield of 470 L/kgVSfeed was obtained with F/I ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 with mesophilic (37 °C) temperature, and methane production rate decreased with the increase of F/I ratio. As F/I ratio increased from 0.5 to 4.0, the lag phase for methane production increased from 1.02 days to 13.52 days, indicating an initial inhibition at high F/I ratios. AD increased the concentrations of ammonia, Cu and Zn in the AD effluent supernatant, while decreased total and water extractive P concentrations. The changes of ammonia, Cu, Zn, and P concentrations were more significant with the increase of F/I ratio.
