RESUMO
The cause of seasonal hydrologic changes in tropical East Asia during interstadial/stadial oscillations of the last glaciation remains controversial. Here, we show seven seasonal drought events that occurred during the relatively warm interstadials by phytolith and pollen records. These events are significantly manifested as high percentages of bilobate phytoliths and are consistent with the large zonal sea-surface temperature (SST) gradient from the western to eastern tropical Pacific, suggesting that the reduction in seasonal precipitation could be interpreted by westward shifts of the western Pacific subtropical high triggered by changes of zonal SST gradient over the tropical Pacific and Hadley circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. Our findings highlight that both zonal and meridional ocean-atmosphere circulations, rather than solely the Intertropical Convergence Zone or El Niño-Southern Oscillation, controlled the hydrologic changes in tropical East Asia during the last glaciation.

Contamination by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the southwest Caspian Sea was assessed by examination of 45 sediment samples, collected from the coasts of the Guilan Province in 2012 and analyzed for 29 PAHs. The concentrations of PAHs were in the range of 232.1-1,014 ng g(-1) dry weight (mean 520±246.4 ng g(-1)). The predominance of alkyl-substituted naphthalenes and phenanthrenes and the higher contributions of petrogenic compounds (NPD=35.4-74.4%) compared to pyrogenic PAH compounds (COM=18.1-47.4%) reveal a petrogenic source for PAHs with ubiquitous distribution in the study area. Offshore increase of total PAH concentrations was found to be correlated with increase of organic matter content of sediments, but no correlations with particle size fractions were found. The evaluation of ecotoxicological risk by sediment quality guidelines indicated that total PAH concentrations at all sites were below the effects range-low (ERL), but some individual petrogenic PAHs at some stations were significantly above their ERL and likely to adversely affect benthic biota. According to the diagnostic ratios used, most stations revealed the major source of the PAHs to be petrogenic, but some stations suggested a mixed petrogenic-pyrogenic source.

The Holocene temperature conundrum, the discrepancy between proxy-based Holocene global cooling and simulated global annual warming trends, remains controversial. Meanwhile, reconstructions and simulations show inconsistent spatial patterns of terrestrial temperature changes. Here we report Holocene alkenone records to address spatial patterns over mid-latitude Eurasia. In contrast with long-term cooling trends in warm season temperatures in northeastern China, records from southwestern Siberia are characterized by colder conditions before ~6,000 years ago, thus long-term warming trends. Together with existing records from surrounding regions, we infer that colder airmass might have prevailed in the interior of mid-latitude Eurasian continent during the early to mid-Holocene, perhaps associated with atmospheric response to remnant ice sheets. Our results challenge the proposed seasonality bias in proxies and modeled spatial patterns in study region, highlighting that spatial patterns of Holocene temperature changes should be re-considered in record integrations and model simulations, with important implications for terrestrial hydroclimate changes.
RESUMO
In our previous study, a polyphenol-utilization targeted quinoa product was developed via solid-state fermentation with Monascus anka. In this study, we investigated the polyphenol-related novel functions of the fermented product further. Compared with unfermented quinoa, M. anka fermented quinoa alleviated the trapping effect of the macromolecules, especially in the colonic fermentation stage, resulting in enhanced polyphenol bioaccessibility. Lachnoclostridium, Megasphaera, Megamonas, Dialister, and Phascolarctobacterium might contribute to polyphenol liberation and metabolism in fermented quinoa. Additionally, fermented quinoa polyphenols presented an efficient anti-obesity effect by enhancing hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities, suppressing fatty acid synthesis, accelerating fatty acid oxidation, and improving bile acid synthesis. Moreover, fermented quinoa polyphenol supplementation alleviated gut microbiota disorder induced by a high-fat diet, resulting in a decreased ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidota, and increased relative abundances of Lactobacillus and Lachnoclostridium. The obtained results suggested that the principal anti-obesity effect of fermented quinoa polyphenols might act through the AMPK/PPARα/CPT-1 pathway. In conclusion, M. anka solid-state fermentation effectively enhanced the bioaccessibility of quinoa, and the fermented quinoa polyphenols showed considerable anti-obesity effect. Our findings provide new perspectives for the development of dietary polyphenol-based satiety-enhancing functional foods.

Climate changes had major impacts on the vegetation of East Asia during the last deglaciation. However, the rate and pattern of vegetation succession in response to large-scale climatic events during this interval are controversial. Here, we present well-dated decadal-resolution pollen records from annually laminated Maar Lake Xiaolongwan during the last deglaciation. The vegetation changes were rapid and near-synchronous with millennial-scale climatic events, including Greenland Stadial 2.1a (GS-2.1a), Greenland Interstadial 1 (GI-1), Greenland Stadial 1 (GS-1), and the early Holocene (EH). The vegetation responded in different ways to the different rates of climate change. Vegetation change was gradual [â¼1 thousand years (kyr) response time] during the transition between GS-2.1a and GI-1, but it was faster (â¼0.4 kyr response time) during the transitions between GI-1, GS-1, and the EH, resulting in different patterns of vegetation succession. Additionally, the amplitude and pattern of vegetation changes resembled those in the records of regional climate change based on long-chain n-alkanes δ13C and stalagmite δ18O, as well as in the mid-latitude Northern Hemisphere temperature record and the Greenland ice core δ18O record. Therefore, the rate and pattern of vegetation succession in the Changbai Mountain of Northeast Asia during the last deglaciation were sensitive to the characteristics of changes in the regional hydrothermal conditions and mid-latitude Northern Hemisphere temperature, which were linked to both high- and low-latitude atmospheric-oceanic dynamics. Overall, our findings reveal a close relationship between ecosystem succession and hydrothermal changes during these millennial-scale climatic events in East Asia during the last deglaciation.
RESUMO
During the 7-9th century, the Tibetan Empire constituted a superpower between the Tang Empire and Abbasid Caliphate: one that played significant roles in geopolitics in Asia during the Early Medieval Period. The factors which led to the rise and rapid decline of this powerful Empire, the only united historical regime on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), remain unclear. Sub-annual scale precipitation and decadal-scale temperature records of the central TP are presented, indicating that the height of this Empire coincided with a two-century long interval of uncharacteristically warm and humid climate. The ameliorated climate enabled the expansion of arable land and increased agricultural production. The close relationship between the precipitation records and historical events implied that the Empire implemented flexible strategies to tackle the effects of climate changes. This has implications for agricultural production in alpine regions including the TP, in the context of current global warming.

Bupivacaine (BUP), which is widely used in anesthesia, can cause neurotoxicity and neurological abnormalities. This work intended to study the function of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) OIP5 antisense RNA 1 (OIP5-AS1) in BUP-triggered neurotoxicity. OIP5-AS1, microRNA (miR)-34b, and nuclear factor of activated T cells 5 (NFAT5) levels were examined via real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). Cell proliferation, caspase-3 activity, and apoptosis were assessed via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), caspase-3 activity, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assays. The regulatory relationships between miR-34b and OIP5-AS1 or NFAT5 were validated via RNA binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP) and dual-luciferase reporter assays. Our data demonstrated that OIP5-AS1 and NFAT5 levels were downregulated and miR-34b was upregulated upon exposure to BUP. Functional assays implied that the OIP5-AS1 deficiency impeded cell proliferation and enhanced the apoptosis of DRG neurons, while OIP5-AS1 addition reversed these changes. Moreover, OIP5-AS1 could bind to miR-34b and OIP5-AS1 regulated BUP-induced neurotoxicity via miR-34b. Besides, miR-34b could directly interact with NFAT5. Augmentation of miR-34b impeded cell proliferation and expedited the apoptosis and caspase-3 activity, while NFAT5 addition neutralized these impacts. Finally, it was verified that OIP5-AS1 could upregulate NFAT5 through sponging miR-34b. In sum, our results disclosed that OIP5-AS1 ameliorated BUP-caused neurotoxicity via regulating the miR-34b/NFAT5 axis, suggesting that OIP5-AS1 might be a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of BUP-induced neurotoxicity.

In this study, surface sediments along the Zayandehrud River (14 samples), and two dated core sediments (46 samples) from small artificial urban lakes at the middle section of the Zayandehrud River in the Gavkhooni basin in the central arid regions of Iran were analyzed for residual levels of 20 organochlorine pesticide (OCP) compounds. Total OCP concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 50.1 ng g-1 dry weight and from 1.9 to 51.5 ng g-1 dry weight in surface and core sediments, respectively. Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) were found to be the predominant OCPs in these sediments. The calculated metabolic and isomeric ratios confirmed the aged nature of residual dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in sediments. Moreover, the isomeric ratios indicated the aged nature of technical HCH (hexachlorocyclohexane), while the contribution of γ- HCH (lindane) as a main source has increased, especially in the last two decades. Past usage, as well as current usage of endosulfan technical mixture in the Gavkhooni basin, has been found in the last four decades. Analyses of sedimentary cores, as natural archives, have shown the successful ban on the use of organochlorine pesticides (especially DDT) in the Gavkhooni basin, and to some extent, in the central plateau of Iran. In general, it can be concluded that natural factors (i.e., floods and wet years) lead to soil leachate and play an essential role in remobilization and transfer of residual OCPs from soil to inland aquatic ecosystems in the Gavkhooni basin, which is an arid region.

Prehistoric human activities were likely influenced by cyclic monsoon climate changes in East Asia. Here we report a decadal-resolution Holocene pollen record from an annually-laminated Maar Lake in Northeast China, a proxy of monsoon climate, together with a compilation of 627 radiocarbon dates from archeological sites in Northeast China which is a proxy of human activity. The results reveal synchronous ~500-year quasi-periodic changes over the last 8000 years. The warm-humid/cold-dry phases of monsoon cycles correspond closely to the intensification/weakening of human activity and the flourishing/decline of prehistoric cultures. Six prosperous phases of prehistoric cultures, with one exception, correspond approximately to warm-humid phases caused by a strengthened monsoon. This ~500-year cyclicity in the monsoon and thus environmental change triggered the development of prehistoric cultures in Northeast China. The cyclicity is apparently linked to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, against the background of long-term Holocene climatic evolution. These findings reveal a pronounced relationship between prehistoric human activity and cyclical climate change.

The Great Khingan Mountain range, Northeast China, is located on the northern limit of modern East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) and thus highly sensitive to the extension of the EASM from glacial to interglacial modes. Here, we present a high-resolution pollen record covering the last glacial maximum and the early Holocene from a closed crater Lake Moon to reconstruct vegetation history during the glacial-interglacial transition and thus register the evolution of the EASM during the last deglaciation. The vegetation history has gone through distinct changes from subalpine meadow in the last glacial maximum to dry steppe dominated by Artemisia from 20.3 to 17.4 ka BP, subalpine meadow dominated by Cyperaceae and Artemisia between 17.4 and 14.4 ka BP, and forest steppe dominated by Betula and Artemisia after 14.4 ka BP. The pollen-based temperature index demonstrates a gradual warming trend started at around 20.3 ka BP with interruptions of several brief events. Two cold conditions occurred around at 17.2-16.6 ka BP and 12.8-11.8 ka BP, temporally correlating to the Henrich 1 and the Younger Dryas events respectively, 1and abrupt warming events occurred around at 14.4 ka BP and 11.8 ka BP, probably relevant to the beginning of the Bølling-Allerød stages and the Holocene. The pollen-based moisture proxy shows distinct drought condition during the last glacial maximum (20.3-18.0 ka BP) and the Younger Dryas. The climate history based on pollen record of Lake Moon suggests that the regional temperature variability was coherent with the classical climate in the North Atlantic, implying the dominance of the high latitude processes on the EASM evolution from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to early Holocene. The local humidity variability was influenced by the EASM limitedly before the Bølling-Allerød warming, which is mainly controlled by the summer rainfall due to the EASM front covering the Northeast China after that.

Phytoliths represent one of the few available altitudinal vegetation proxies for mountain ecosystems. This study analyzed 41 topsoil phytolith samples collected from five altitudinal zones in the southern Himalaya as far as, and beyond, the timberline, from tropical forest (up to 1,000 m a.s.l.) to subtropical forest (1,000-2,000 m a.s.l.), to temperate forest (2,000-3,000 m a.s.l.), to subalpine forest (3,000-4,100 m a.s.l.) and finally to alpine scrub (4,100-5,200 m a.s.l.). The statistical results show a good correlation between phytolith assemblages and these five altitudinal vegetation zones: the five phytolith assemblages identified effectively differentiated these five altitudinal vegetation zones. In particular, coniferous phytoliths accurately indicated the timberline. Additionally, we tested the phytolith index Ic (a proxy for estimating the percentage of Pooideae vis-à-vis the total grass content) as a quantifier of phytolith variety versus altitude. Ic increased along altitude, as expected. An investigation of phytoliths provided an initial basis for the analysis of the composition of gramineous vegetation. Furthermore, redundancy analysis and discriminant analysis also suggested a significant correlation between phytolith assemblages and altitude. Our research therefore provides an up-to-date analogue for the reconstruction of changes to palaeovegetation and palaeoaltitude in mountainous areas.

In this study, 75 samples of two (210)Pb-dated cores from the southwest of the Caspian Sea were analysed for 30 compounds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The TPAH29 flux of the last six centuries ranged from 16.3 to 177.3 and 22.3 to 426.2 ng cm(-2)y(-1) in the Rezvanshahr and Anzali core sediments, respectively. Prior to 1840, four distinct maxima in PAH fluxes (61-426.2 ng cm(-2)y(-1)) with a low weathered petrogenic pattern were found in each of the core sediments. Simultaneity of distinct peaks of PAH fluxes before 1840 and Caspian Sea level high-stands during the Little Ice Age (LIA), revealed the high importance of this phenomenon in washing and transport of land-based oil pollution into the Caspian Sea. An overall increase in some diagnostic ratios (Flu/202, IP/276 and BaA/228), especially after 1940, indicated increase of pyrogenic PAHs as a result of industrial development in the catchment area.

In this study, 84 surface sediment samples, from 28 Iranian rivers, 45 surface sediment samples and 31 samples from one core in the southwest of the Caspian Sea were collected and analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed high variability of perylene in coastal surface sediments (1.3-123.6 ng g⻹ dw) and river sediments (0.5-111.1 ng g⻹ dw). Core samples revealed high levels of perylene which increased with depth. Three diagnostic ratios (DRs) for source identification of perylene (Per/TPAH, Per/PAI and Py/Per) revealed a dominance of biogenic inputs to the surface layers (coasts and rivers) and diagenetic production of perylene in the sediment core. Hyrcanian forests with humid climates favor wood-degrading fungi and the production of perylene and its precursors. Biogenic production of perylene as a land plant derived biomarker can be used for the reconstruction of paleoclimatic conditions of the southwest Caspian Sea.

Here we presented a high-resolution 5350-year pollen record from a maar annually laminated lake in East Asia (EA). Pollen record reflected the dynamics of vertical vegetation zones and temperature change. Spectral analysis on pollen percentages/concentrations of Pinus and Quercus, and a temperature proxy, revealed ~500-year quasi-periodic cold-warm fluctuations during the past 5350 years. This ~500-year cyclic climate change occurred in EA during the mid-late Holocene and even the last 150 years dominated by anthropogenic forcing. It was almost in phase with a ~500-year periodic change in solar activity and Greenland temperature change, suggesting that ~500-year small variations in solar output played a prominent role in the mid-late Holocene climate dynamics in EA, linked to high latitude climate system. Its last warm phase might terminate in the next several decades to enter another ~250-year cool phase, and thus this future centennial cyclic temperature minimum could partially slow down man-made global warming.
