RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of I-tape and button hole kinesio taping (KT) techniques added to exercises in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled blinded study. SETTING: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 108 patients (165 wrists) diagnosed with CTS (N=108). INTERVENTIONS: Button hole technique (BG), I-band technique (IG), and exercises (EG). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual analog scale (VAS), Douleur Neuropathique 4 Questions (DN4), Boston carpal tunnel syndrome questionnaire, and Jamar dynamometer were used. Median sensory nerve action potential (SNAP), compound muscle action potential (CMAP), median distal sensory latency (DSL), median distal motor latency (DML), sensory conduction velocity, and motor conduction velocity were recorded. Measurements were made at baseline, week 3, and week 12. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were in each group. Significant statistical improvements in VAS and DN4 scores were found in the BG and IG compared with EG (P<.05). Statistically significant improvements in hand grip strength were observed in the IG compared with the EG (P<.05). Significant improvements in DML levels and motor conduction velocity were observed in the BG and IG compared with the EG (P<.05). A significant increase in sensory conduction velocity was detected in the BG compared with the other groups (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both KT techniques are effective in terms of pain, functionality, symptom severity, grip strength, and electrophysiologically. The button hole technique was more effective in DSL, sensory conduction velocity, CMAP amplitude, and SNAP.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Data in the literature on the results of Kinesio taping (KT) application after cast removal in patients with distal radius fracture (DRF) are quite limited. PURPOSE: It was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of KT applied immediately after cast removal in addition to the exercise program on edema, functionality, range of motion, and muscle strength in patients with conservatively followed DRF. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled single-blinded clinical study. METHODS: This study was conducted with 64 patients with a diagnosis of DRF. The patients were randomized as Kinesio taping group (KTG) and control group. Both groups received a conventional home exercise program. KT was applied to patients in KTG for 10 days. Circumference and volume measurements were taken at baseline and day 10. Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire for Disability, Visual Analog Scale, grip strength, and wrist joint range of motion measurements were taken at baseline, day 5, and day 10. RESULTS: The circumference difference between the affected extremity and the healthy extremity was statistically greater in the control group on the fifth day at the wrist level (<0.001) and 6 cm proximal to the wrist (p = 0.001). The circumference difference between the affected extremity and the healthy extremity was statistically greater in the control group on the 10th day at the wrist level (p < 0.05) and 6 cm proximal to the wrist (p = 0.01). Wrist extension angle (<0.001), wrist flexion angle (p = 0.001), and supination angle (p = 0.001) were higher in KTG on the 10th day. On the 10th day, the grip strength (p < 0.05) was higher in the KTG, while the Visual Analog Scale value (p < 0.01), Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire for Disability score (p < 0.01), and the percentage of strength loss in the healthy arm (p < 0.01) were lower in the KTG. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with DRF who were treated conservatively with a cast, the inclusion of Kinesio taping (KT) in the rehabilitation program was found to be effective in reducing edema and pain, as well as improving functionality, strength, and range of motion.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare health-related physical fitness parameters of women with breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) to a matched control group. METHODS: Thirty women with unilateral BCRL (lymphedema group, age = 55.00 (40.00-65.00) years) and 32 healthy women (control group, age = 49.00 (44.00-64.00) years) were included. Cardiorespiratory fitness with the UKK 2-km walk test, grip strength with a hand dynamometer, trunk muscle endurance with the McGill trunk muscle endurance tests, flexibility with the sit and reach test, body composition with a body composition analyzer, and waist-to-hip ratio were assessed. RESULTS: In the lymphedema group, 36.7% of women had mild lymphedema, 36.7% had moderate, and 26.7% had severe lymphedema. It was found that maximal oxygen consumption, physical fitness index, grip strength, trunk extensor and lateral flexor muscle endurance, and flexibility scores were higher in the control group than in the lymphedema group (p < 0.05). In addition, body mass index, body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio were found to be lower in the control group compared to the lymphedema group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the trunk flexor muscle endurance scores (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the health-related physical fitness parameters were adversely affected in women with BCRL compared to healthy women. The changes of physical fitness may be important for the assessment and the treatment of BCRL.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There are current studies on kinesio taping (KT) application after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), but there is no definite consensus on its effectiveness and application method yet. This study aims to evaluates the effectiveness of KT applied added to the conservative postoperative physiotherapy program (CPPP) after TKA on postoperative edema, pain, range of motion, and functions on the early period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind study was conducted in with 187 patients undergoing TKA. The patients were divided into 3 groups as kinesio taping (KTG), sham taping (STG) and control group (CG). KT lymphedema technique and epidermis, dermis, fascia technique were applied on the 1st and 3rd days postoperatively. Extremity circumference and joint range of motion (ROM) were measured. Visual Analog Scale, Oxford Knee Scale filled. All patients were evaluated preoperatively, on the 1st day, 3rd day, and 10th day postoperatively. RESULTS: There were 62 patients in CTG, 62 patients in STG, and 63 patients in CG. In all circumference measurements, the difference between post-op10th day (PO10D) diameter and preoperative diameter measurement was less in KTG than in CG and STG (p < 0.001). CG was higher than the STG in the ROM values measured at PO10D.There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of OKS values (P:0.648). CG was higher than STG in post-op 1st day VAS values (P:0.042). CONCLUSION: Adding KT to CPP after TKA reduces edema in the acute phase, but has no additive effect on pain, functionality, and ROM.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between bruxism and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is not clear. OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated which TMD are associated with probable sleep bruxism (SB) and awake bruxism (AB) according to the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). The study further evaluated the association between probable SB and AB and TMD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 143 patients were selected - bruxers (SB and AB) and non-bruxers. A diagnosis of probable bruxism was made after a physical examination and when the symptoms were detected. The patients were evaluated using DC/TMD. From among Axis I assessment instruments, the TMD Pain Screener, the Symptom Questionnaire and the Clinical Examination Form were used. Moreover, the Graded Chronic Pain Scale (GCPS) (v. 2), the Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-8 (JFLS-8), the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), and the Oral Behaviors Checklist (OBC) were applied within the scope of Axis II. RESULTS: Diagnoses of muscle disorders and disk displacement with reduction were significantly more frequent in the SB and AB groups than in non-bruxers. A diagnosis of arthralgia was significantly more prevalent in the AB group than in non-bruxers. The JFLS-8 scores and the TMD Pain Screener scores were higher in the AB group than in the SB group and in non-bruxers. Distress levels, and the GCPS and OBC scores were higher in the SB and AB groups as compared to non-bruxers. The results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that only the OBC score was significantly higher in the TMD subgroup (OR (odds ratio) = 1.228; 95% CI (confidence interval): 1.014-1.488). CONCLUSIONS: Both SB and AB were associated with pain-related TMD and intra-articular joint disorders. The muscle disorders and disk displacement with reduction subtypes were associated with SB and AB. Unlike SB, AB was also associated with arthralgia. Bruxers (both SB and AB) displayed parafunctional habits. However, AB was associated with greater functional limitation of the jaw as compared to SB.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Platelet-rich plasma(PRP) and prolotherapy(PRL) are regenerative treatment approaches in the knee osteoarthritis (KOA). AIM: To see how efficient PRP and PRL are in treating KOA. METHODS: A total of 108 patients with a diagnosis of KOA who received either PRL, PRP, or exercise therapy and whose 3-month follow-up data were available were included in this retrospective study (PRL n = 35 or PRP n = 35, exercise n = 38). Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and The Western Ontario McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC) were used as outcome measures at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the three groups in terms of demographic parameters, baseline assessments of pain intensity, or WOMAC scores. At the first and third months, all groups showed a substantial improvement in the VAS activity, resting and WOMAC values as compared to before treatment(p < 0.05). When the groups were compared, the VAS activity, resting, and WOMAC values in PRP and PRL improved significantly in the first and third months compared to the exercise group. At one month, there was a statistically significant improvement in VAS activity and WOMAC pain and total scores compared to PRP and PRL, but this improvement was not significant at 3 months. CONCLUSION: Pain and disability were significantly improved with PRL and PRP compared with exercise therapy. Although PRP is more effective than PRL in the first month after treatment, PRL may be preferred due to its low cost, long-term efficacy, and low complication rates due to the periarticular application.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare postural stability, spinal alignment, mobility, and postural competency in women with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema after radical hysterectomy following gynecologic cancer with a matched control group. METHODS: Twenty-seven women with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema (lymphedema group, age: 54.14 ± 5.80 years) and 30 healthy women (control group, age: 51.90 ± 6.54 years) were included. The lymphedema severity was evaluated with circumferential measurements. Postural stability with the Biodex Balance System SD and the spinal alignment, mobility, and postural competency with the Spinal Mouse device were assessed. RESULTS: In the lymphedema group, it was found that 3.7% of the women had mild lymphedema, 7.4% had moderate lymphedema, and 88.9% had severe lymphedema. Static eyes open (EO) (overall, medio-lateral and antero-posterior) and eyes closed (EC) (antero-posterior) stability scores and dynamic EO and EC stability scores (overall and antero-posterior) were detected to be higher in the lymphedema group than in the controls (p < 0.05). Spinal mobility and postural competency scores were lower in the lymphedema group than in the control group (p < 0.05). In other parameters, there were no significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Decreased postural stability, spinal mobility, and postural competency were detected in women with unilateral lower extremity lymphedema; however, no difference was seen in spinal alignment. These changes should be taken into account in the assessment and the treatment of unilateral lower extremity lymphedema.

RESUMO

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of whole-body vibration exercise (WBVE) and core stabilization exercise (CSE) on pain, muscle strength, and functional recovery in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (NLBP). Patients and methods: Between June 2016 and July 2017, a total of 74 patients with NLBP (12 males, 62 females; mean age: 44.7±8.9 years; range, 24 to 64 years) were included in this prospective, randomized-controlled study. The patients were randomly assigned to WBVE group (WBVEG, n=25), CSE group (CSEG, (n=25), and home exercise group as the control group (CG, (n=24). All groups performed 24 sessions of exercise for a total of eight weeks. Clinical outcome was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ), computerized isokinetic muscle strengths (IMS) and progressive isoinertial lifting evaluation (PILE) test. Results: The VAS and RMDQ scores in WBVEG and CSEG statistically significantly decreased (p<0.05). The difference between the pre-treatment and at three-month VAS scores during intense activity were significantly different in both WBVEG and CSEG than the CG (p<0.05). The IMS values, except for the isokinetic flexion total work (IKFTW), increased significantly in all three groups (p<0.05). The IKFTW values increased significantly in the WBVEG and CSEG (p<0.05). A statistically significant increase in the functional work performance with PILE was observed in all three groups (p<0.05). The differences between the pre-treatment and three-month PILE test (ground to back and back to shoulder) were significantly different in both WBVEG and CSEG than the CG (p<0.05). Conclusion: In the treatment of chronic NLBP, WBVE and CSE appear to be effective in pain and functionality. Although there was a significant improvement in muscle strength and functional work performance in all three groups, greater improvements were observed in the WBVEG and CSEG than the CG.
