RESUMO

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors diminish carcinogenesis, metastasis, and cancer cell proliferation by inducing death in cancer cells. Tissue regeneration and organ development are highly dependent on the Hippo signaling pathway. Targeting the dysregulated hippo pathway is an excellent approach for cancer treatment. According to the results of this study, the combination of panobinostat, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a chemotherapy drug, can act synergistically to induce apoptosis in gastric cancer cells. The combination of panobinostat and 5-FU was more effective in inhibiting cell viability than either treatment alone by elevating the protein levels of cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase-9. By specifically targeting E-cadherin, vimentin, and MMP-9, the combination of panobinostat and 5-FU significantly inhibited cell migration. Additionally, panobinostat significantly increased the anticancer effects of 5-FU by activating Hippo signaling (Mst 1 and 2, Sav1, and Mob1) and inhibiting the Akt signaling pathway. As a consequence, there was a decrease in the amount of Yap protein. The combination therapy of panobinostat with 5-FU dramatically slowed the spread of gastric cancer in a xenograft animal model by deactivating the Akt pathway and supporting the Hippo pathway. Since combination treatment exhibits much higher anti-tumor potential than 5-FU alone, panobinostat effectively potentiates the anti-tumor efficacy of 5-FU. As a result, it is believed that panobinostat and 5-FU combination therapy will be useful as supplemental chemotherapy in the future.

OBJECTIVES: CD25 (IL-2Rα) is one of IL-2 receptor's polypeptide subunits, and its soluble form is increased in patients with various inflammatory or autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical correlation of serum soluble CD25 (sCD25) with interstitial lung disease (ILD) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. METHODS: 294 RA patients, including 72 in the discovery cohort (15 patients with ILD, 57 patients without ILD), 222 in the validation cohort (41 patients with ILD and 181 patients without ILD), and 58 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan provided evidence and patterns of RA-ILD. Serum sCD25 concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical and laboratory data were recorded and the association with sCD25 was also analysed. RESULTS: In the discovery cohort, 16 RA-related molecules including cytokines, chemokines and functional soluble cell surface proteins were investigated. The results showed that sCD25 was significantly higher in RA-ILD than in RA-no-ILD group (p=0.004). ROC analysis also showed RA-ILD was discriminated with RA-no-ILD by sCD25 (AUC=0.695, 95% CI=0.541-0.849). Logistics regression demonstrated that sCD25 was one of the risk factors of RA-ILD. This result was further confirmed in validation cohort (p<0.001). According to the cut-off value in the discovery cohort, the sensitivity and specificity of sCD25 in RA-ILD were 51.2%, 77.3%, respectively. Compared with RA-no-ILD, serum level of sCD25 was also higher in different HRCT patterns including UIP, NSIP and RA-ILA. The ROC curves revealed sCD25 as diagnostic marker in UIP, NSIP and RA-ILA (with AUCs of 0.730, 0.761, and 0. 694, respectively, p<0.05). The result indicated that sCD25 was a biomarker for RA-ILD subtypes. Although sCD25 was not correlated with HRCT scores, it was significantly higher in consolidation pattern by HRCT. CONCLUSIONS: sCD25 was significantly elevated in RA-ILD (including UIP, NSIP and RA-ILA) compared to RA-no-ILD and HCs, which supports their value as a potential biomarker in RA-ILD screening and assessment.

This study was designed to investigate the correlation of neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and interleukin (IL)-37/IL-17 ratio with the incidence/treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Firstly, fifty-eight patients with RA treated at the first affiliated hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from January 2018 to January 2019 were selected as the RA group; forty-nine healthy volunteers were enrolled in the control group. RA patients were treated with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Next, the NLR, PLR, IL-37, IL-17 and 28-joint disease activity score using erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) were deleted in two groups. Subsequently, Spearman correlation analysis was adopted for the correlations of various indicators before and after treatment in two groups. According to the analysis results, the levels of NLR, PLR, IL-37, and IL-17 before treatment in the RA group were higher than those in the control group (P < .05), but the difference in the IL-37/IL-17 level between the two groups was not significant (P > .05). After treatment, NLR, PLR, and IL-37/IL-17 levels were significantly reduced in RA patients (P < .05). NLR and PLR were significantly positively correlated with DAS28-ESR, ESR and C-reactive protein (CRP), of which represented the disease activity of RA. NLP was strongly correlated with IL-37/IL-17. Collectively, NLR, PLR, IL-37, and IL-17 are closely related to the occurrence of RA. In addition, NLR and IL-37/IL-17 are more suitable than PLR in reflecting the therapeutic effect. Therefore, IL-37/IL-17 can be considered as a new indicator for reflecting the treatment effectiveness of RA.

Thyroid cancer (TC) is a kind of cancer with high heterogeneity, which leads to significant difference in prognosis. The prognostic molecular processes are not well understood. Cancer cells and tumor microenvironment (TME) cells jointly determine the heterogeneity. However, quite a little attention was paid to cells in the TME in the past years. In this study, we not only reveal that endothelial cells (ECs) are strongly associated with the progress of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) using single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and WGCNA, but also screen 5 crucial genes of ECs: CLDN5, ABCG2, NOTCH4, PLAT, and TMEM47. Furthermore, the 5-gene molecular prognostic model is constructed, which can predict how well a patient will do on PD-L1 blockade immunotherapy for TC and evaluate prognosis. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis demonstrates that PLAT is decreased in TC and the increase of PLAT can restrain the migratory capacity of TC cells. Meanwhile, in TC cells, PLAT suppresses VEGFa/VEGFR2-mediated human umbilical vascular endothelial cell (HUVEC) proliferation and tube formation. Totally, we construct the 5-gene molecular prognostic model from the perspective of EC and provide a new idea for immunotherapy of TC.

Advancing the domain of biomedical investigation, integrated multi-omics data have shown exceptional performance in elucidating complex human diseases. However, as the variety of omics information expands, precisely perceiving the informativeness of intra- and inter-omics becomes challenging due to the intricate interrelations, thus presenting significant challenges in the integration of multi-omics data. To address this, we introduce a novel multi-omics integration approach, referred to as TEMINET. This approach enhances diagnostic prediction by leveraging an intra-omics co-informative representation module and a trustworthy learning strategy used to address inter-omics fusion. Considering the multifactorial nature of complex diseases, TEMINET utilizes intra-omics features to construct disease-specific networks; then, it applies graph attention networks and a multi-level framework to capture more collective informativeness than pairwise relations. To perceive the contribution of co-informative representations within intra-omics, we designed a trustworthy learning strategy to identify the reliability of each omics in integration. To integrate inter-omics information, a combined-beliefs fusion approach is deployed to harmonize the trustworthy representations of different omics types effectively. Our experiments across four different diseases using mRNA, methylation, and miRNA data demonstrate that TEMINET achieves advanced performance and robustness in classification tasks.

Saussurea involucrata oral liquid (SIOL) can clinically relieve symptoms, such as joint pain and swelling, and morning stiffness, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the mechanism of action remains unclear. This study used a combination of gut microbiota and serum metabolomics analysis to investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of SIOL intervention on rats with RA induced by type II bovine collagen and Freund's complete adjuvant. Results showed that SIOL treatment consequently improved the degree of ankle joint swelling, joint histopathological changes, joint pathological score, and expression of serum-related inflammatory cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α) in RA model rats. 16 S rRNA sequencing results showed that SIOL increased the relative richness of the Lactobacillus and Bacteroides genus and decreased the relative richness of Romboutsia, Alloprevotella, Blautia, and Helicobacter genus. Serum nontargeted metabolomic results indicated that SIOL could regulate metabolites related to metabolic pathways, such as glycine, serine, threonine, galactose, cysteine, and methionine metabolism. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the regulatory effects of SIOL on the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, phenylalanine metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism pathways were correlated with changes in the richness of the Lactobacillus, Romboutsia, Bacteroides, and Alloprevotella genus in the gut microbiome. In conclusion, this study revealed the ameliorative effects of SIOL on RA and suggested that the therapeutic effects of SIOL on RA may be related to the regulation of the community richness of the Lactobacillus, Romboutsia, Bacteroides, and Alloprevotella genus, thereby improving the TCA cycle; phenylalanine metabolism; phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan biosynthesis, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism-related pathways.

Hippo/YAP signaling hinders cancer progression. Inactivation of this pathway contributes to the development of esophageal cancer by activation of Akt. However, the possible interaction between Akt and Hippo/YAP pathways in esophageal cancer progression is unclear. In this study, we found that ursolic acid (UA) plus 3'3-diindolylmethane (DIM) efficiently suppressed the oncogenic Akt/Gsk-3ß signaling pathway while activating the Hippo tumor suppressor pathway in esophageal cancer cells. Moreover, the addition of the Akt inhibitor LY294002 and the PI3K inhibitor 3-methyladenine enhanced the inhibitory effects of UA plus DIM on Akt pathway activation and further stimulated the Hippo pathway, including the suppression of YAP nuclear translocation in esophageal cancer cells. Silencing YAP under UA plus DIM conditions significantly increased the activation of the tumor suppressor PTEN in esophageal cancer cells, while decreasing p-Akt activation, indicating that the Akt signaling pathway could be down-regulated in esophageal cancer cells by targeting PTEN. Furthermore, in a xenograft nude mice model, UA plus DIM treatment effectively diminished esophageal tumors by inactivating the Akt pathway and stimulating the Hippo signaling pathway. Thus, our study highlights a feedback loop between the PI3K/Akt and Hippo signaling pathways in esophageal cancer cells, implying that a low dose of UA plus DIM could serve as a promising chemotherapeutic combination strategy in the treatment of esophageal cancer.

Non-metallic materials have emerged as a new family of active substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), with unique advantages over their metal counterparts. However, owing to their inefficient interaction with the incident wavelength, the Raman enhancement achieved with non-metallic materials is considerably lower with respect to the metallic ones. Herein, we propose colourful semiconductor-based SERS substrates for the first time by utilizing a Fabry-Pérot cavity, which realize a large freedom in manipulating light. Owing to the delicate adjustment of the absorption in terms of both frequency and intensity, resonant absorption can be achieved with a variety of non-metal SERS substrates, with the sensitivity further enhanced by ≈100 times. As a typical example, by introducing a Fabry-Pérot-type substrate fabricated with SiO2 /Si, a rather low detection limit of 10-16  M for the SARS-CoV-2S protein is achieved on SnS2 . This study provides a realistic strategy for increasing SERS sensitivity when semiconductors are employed as SERS substrates.

There is keen research interest in building highly effective semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platforms, due to their selectivity for many probe molecules and suitability for complex scenario applications. However, current tuning approaches have not yet been successful in creating semiconductor-based SERS sensors for small inorganic molecules, due to the challenge of creating sufficient SERS enhancement in semiconductors. Here, we demonstrate the use of MoO3·xH2O quantum dots (QDs), to achieve direct and sensitive fingerprinting of the inorganic species hydrazine, which is a first attempt in semiconductor-based SERS research, as well as various other probe molecules. The resulting SERS platform that uses QDs with average size of 2.2 nm could successfully detect the signal of hydrazine with a limit of detection estimated to be around 4 × 10-5 M, significantly lowering the detectable concentration by at least 1000-fold, in sharp contrast to the weak performance of 10 and 100 nm particles, demonstrating that quantum size effect triggered by small particle size below the Bohr radius is crucially responsible for high SERS activity. The significantly enhanced SERS activity is a result of vibronically coupled multipathway, highly efficient charge-transfer resonances induced by the divergence of energy states in quantum-sized MoO3·xH2O. This is a proof-of-concept demonstration of the exploitation of quantum size effect, toward significantly enhanced intrinsic SERS activity in semiconductor-based SERS materials.

Schizophrenia is associated with widespread alterations in subcortical brain structure. While analytic methods have enabled more detailed morphometric characterization, findings are often equivocal. In this meta-analysis, we employed the harmonized ENIGMA shape analysis protocols to collaboratively investigate subcortical brain structure shape differences between individuals with schizophrenia and healthy control participants. The study analyzed data from 2,833 individuals with schizophrenia and 3,929 healthy control participants contributed by 21 worldwide research groups participating in the ENIGMA Schizophrenia Working Group. Harmonized shape analysis protocols were applied to each site's data independently for bilateral hippocampus, amygdala, caudate, accumbens, putamen, pallidum, and thalamus obtained from T1-weighted structural MRI scans. Mass univariate meta-analyses revealed more-concave-than-convex shape differences in the hippocampus, amygdala, accumbens, and thalamus in individuals with schizophrenia compared with control participants, more-convex-than-concave shape differences in the putamen and pallidum, and both concave and convex shape differences in the caudate. Patterns of exaggerated asymmetry were observed across the hippocampus, amygdala, and thalamus in individuals with schizophrenia compared to control participants, while diminished asymmetry encompassed ventral striatum and ventral and dorsal thalamus. Our analyses also revealed that higher chlorpromazine dose equivalents and increased positive symptom levels were associated with patterns of contiguous convex shape differences across multiple subcortical structures. Findings from our shape meta-analysis suggest that common neurobiological mechanisms may contribute to gray matter reduction across multiple subcortical regions, thus enhancing our understanding of the nature of network disorganization in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for more than 85% of the total cases with lung cancer. NSCLC is characterized by easy metastasis, which often spreads to bones, brains and livers. RNA-binding motif protein 10 (RBM10) is an alternative splicing (AS) regulator frequently mutated in NSCLC. We found that there were multiple peak binding sites between RBM10 and long non-coding RNA nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (LncRNA Neat1) by crosslinking-immunprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing (Clip-Seq). LncRNA Neat1 plays an indispensable role in promoting cancer in a variety of tumors and produces two splicing variants: Neat1_1 and Neat1_2. This study aims to explore the mechanism of RBM10 and LncRNA Neat1 in invasion and metastasis of NSCLC. METHODS: Through histological and cytological experiments, we assessed the expression level of RBM10 protein expression. The interaction between RBM10 and Neat1 was evaluated via Clip-Seq and RNA immunoprecipitation assay. The effect of RBM10 on Neat1 and its splicing variants was identified by RT-qPCR. The effect of RBM10 and Neat1 on invasive and metastasis phenotypes of NSCLC was analyzed using transwell invasion assay and scratch test. Additionally, downstream signaling pathway of RBM10 were identified by immunofluorescence and western blot. RESULTS: RBM10 exhibited low levels of expression in NSCLC tissues and cells. RBM10 inhibited the invasion and metastasis of NSCLC and recruited Neat1 and Neat1_2. Overexpression of RBM10 simultaneously inhibited Neat1 and Neat1_2, and promoted the expression of Neat1_1. On the other hand, silencing RBM10 promoted Neat1 and Neat1_2, and inhibited the expression of Neat1_1. From this, we concluded that RBM10 regulated AS of Neat1, and the tumor-promoting effect of Neat1 was mainly attributed to Neat1_2. RBM10 had a negative correlation with Neat1_2. In addition, RBM10 upregulated the expression of PTEN and downregulated the phosphorylation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR through Neat1_2, which ultimately inhibited the invasion and metastasis of NSCLC. CONCLUSION: The RBM10 regulated AS of Neat1 to cause the imbalance of Neat1_1 and Neat1_2, and RBM10 suppressed the activation of the PTEN/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signal by downregulating Neat1_2, finally affected the invasion and metastasis of NSCLC.

The stray-light suppression of a large off-axis three-mirror anastigmatic space camera has been a hot topic, and this study proposes a composite stray-light suppression strategy that effectively suppresses stray light using the combination of a baffle, retaining ring, and internal antistray light measures. Additionally, the light barrier of the third mirror with a three-layered structure was designed to further optimize the composite stray-light suppression system. At the stray-light simulation analysis stage, in view of the limitations of the Torrance-Sparrow scattering analysis model, an analysis model with wide adaptability is proposed, which can be applied to the stray-light simulation analysis of large-size mirrors with rough surfaces. The simulation results indicate that the point source transmittance of the composite stray-light suppression strategy proposed in this paper is of the order of 10-5 before installing the light barrier of the third mirror, and the veiling glare index of the full field of view is less than 5.8%. After installing the light barrier of the third mirror, the point source transmittance reached the order of 10-8, and the veiling glare index of the full field of view was less than 1.31%. Moreover, the influence of the light barrier of the third mirror on the modulation transfer function of the system was less than 2.3%. The modulation transfer function test of the large-width off-axis three-mirror anastigmatic space camera in a simulated vacuum on-orbit environment was completed, and the test results indicated that the negative impact of the light barrier of the third mirror on the modulation transfer function was less than 3.6%. Moreover, an out-of-field imaging test of the space camera was conducted and the results showed that the image was clear, and the SNR reached 80 dB. The simulation and experimental results prove that the solution in this study can effectively solve the problem of stray-light suppression for large off-axis three-mirror anastigmatic space cameras.

Inorganic electrochromic (EC) materials with vibrant multicolor change that are compatible with large-scale processing have been at the forefront of EC technology and are crucial in a wide range of applications, such as displays and camouflage. However, limited strategies are available to realize such inorganic materials, and challenges such as low color purity are yet to be overcome. Here, we demonstrate multilayered metal-dielectric metamaterials (MMDMs) as a new family of inorganics-based EC materials to achieve dynamic alternation among multicolors with high contrast and high color purity, which are structurally realized by significantly enhancing the confinement of the incident light in specific optical frequencies. This multilayer structure renders high reflectivity (75%), high quality factor (7.4), and a full width at half-maximum of 60 nm before coloration and presents a color gamut at least 40% wider than that of previously reported metamaterials after coloration, indicating good color quality.

OBJECTIVES: To study the influence of umbilical cord milking versus delayed cord clamping on the early prognosis of preterm infants with a gestational age of <34 weeks. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, Weipu Database, and SinoMed were searched for randomized controlled trials on umbilical cord milking versus delayed cord clamping in preterm infants with a gestational age of <34 weeks published up to November 2021. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, two researchers independently performed literature screening, quality evaluation, and data extraction. Review Manger 5.4 was used for Meta analysis. RESULTS: A total of 11 articles were included in the analysis, with 1 621 preterm infants in total, among whom there were 809 infants in the umbilical cord milking group and 812 in the delayed cord clamping group. The Meta analysis showed that compared with delayed cord clamping, umbilical cord milking increased the mean blood pressure after birth (weighted mean difference=3.61, 95%CI: 0.73-6.50, P=0.01), but it also increased the incidence rate of severe intraventricular hemorrhage (RR=1.83, 95%CI: 1.08-3.09, P=0.02). There were no significant differences between the two groups in hemoglobin, hematocrit, blood transfusion rate, proportion of infants undergoing phototherapy, bilirubin peak, and incidence rates of complications such as periventricular leukomalacia and necrotizing enterocolitis (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with delayed cord clamping, umbilical cord milking may increase the risk of severe intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants with a gestational age of <34 weeks; however, more high-quality large-sample randomized controlled trials are needed for further confirmation.

MOTIVATION: Brain imaging genetics aims to reveal genetic effects on brain phenotypes, where most studies examine phenotypes defined on anatomical or functional regions of interest (ROIs) given their biologically meaningful interpretation and modest dimensionality compared with voxelwise approaches. Typical ROI-level measures used in these studies are summary statistics from voxelwise measures in the region, without making full use of individual voxel signals. RESULTS: In this article, we propose a flexible and powerful framework for mining regional imaging genetic associations via voxelwise enrichment analysis, which embraces the collective effect of weak voxel-level signals and integrates brain anatomical annotation information. Our proposed method achieves three goals at the same time: (i) increase the statistical power by substantially reducing the burden of multiple comparison correction; (ii) employ brain annotation information to enable biologically meaningful interpretation and (iii) make full use of fine-grained voxelwise signals. We demonstrate our method on an imaging genetic analysis using data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, where we assess the collective regional genetic effects of voxelwise FDG-positron emission tomography measures between 116 ROIs and 565 373 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Compared with traditional ROI-wise and voxelwise approaches, our method identified 2946 novel imaging genetic associations in addition to 33 ones overlapping with the two benchmark methods. In particular, two newly reported variants were further supported by transcriptome evidences from region-specific expression analysis. This demonstrates the promise of the proposed method as a flexible and powerful framework for exploring imaging genetic effects on the brain. BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the accuracy of neutrophil CD64, procalcitonin (PCT), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as markers for the diagnosis of sepsis in adult patients. METHODS: Various databases were searched to collect published studies on the diagnosis of sepsis in adult patients using neutrophil CD64, PCT, and IL-6 levels. Utilizing the Stata SE 15.0 software, forest plots and the area under the summary receiver operating characteristic curves were drawn. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio, and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated. RESULTS: Fifty-four articles were included in the study. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of neutrophil CD64 for the diagnosis of sepsis were 0.88 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.81-0.92), 0.88 (95% CI, 0.83-0.91), and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.91-0.96), respectively. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of PCT for the diagnosis of sepsis were 0.82 (95% CI, 0.78-0.85), 0.78 (95% CI, 0.74-0.82), and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.83-0.89), respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that the AUC for PCT diagnosis of intensive care unit (ICU) sepsis was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.83-0.89) and the AUC for PCT diagnosis of non-ICU sepsis was 0.82 (95% CI, 0.78-0.85). The pooled sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of IL-6 for the diagnosis of sepsis were 0.72 (95% CI, 0.65-0.78), 0.70 (95% CI, 0.62-0.76), and 0.77 (95% CI, 0.73-0.80), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Of the three biomarkers studied, neutrophil CD64 showed the highest diagnostic value for sepsis, followed by PCT, and IL-6. On the other hand, PCT showed a better diagnostic potential for the diagnosis of sepsis in patients with severe conditions compared with that in patients with non-severe conditions.

Electrochromic supercapacitors that can change their appearances according to their charged states are presently attracting significant interest from both academia and industry. Tungsten oxide is often used in electrochromic supercapacitors because it can serve as an active material for both benchmarking electrochromic devices and high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. Despite this, acceptable visual aesthetics in electrochromic supercapacitors have almost never been achieved using tungsten oxide, because, in its pure form, this compound only displays a 1-fold color modulation from transparent to blue. Herein, we defy this trend by reporting the first ever Fabry-Perot (F-P) cavity-type electrochromic supercapacitors based only on a tungsten oxide material. The devices were sensitively changeable according to their charge/discharge states and displayed a wide variety of fantastic patterns consisting of different, vivid colors, with both simple and complex designs being achieved. Our findings suggested a novel direction for the aesthetic design of intelligent, multifunctional electrochemical energy storage devices.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have recently become attractive candidate substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, exhibiting good semiconductor-based SERS sensing for a wider variety of application scenarios. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we propose that surface defects play a vital role in the magnification of the SERS performances of 2D semiconductors. As a prototype material, ultrathin WO3 nanosheets is used to demonstrate that surface defect sites and the resulting increased charge-carrier density can induce strong charge-transfer interactions at the substrate-molecule interface, thereby improving the sensitivity of the SERS substrate by 100 times with high reproducibility. Further work with other metal oxides suggests the reduced dimension of 2D materials can be advantageous in promoting SERS sensing for multiple probe molecules.

The high-temperature molten-salt method is an important inorganic synthetic route to a wide variety of morphological phenotypes. However, its utility is limited by the fact that it is typically incapable of producing ultrathin (<5 nm diameter) nanowires, which have a crucial role in novel nanotechnology applications. Herein, a rapid molten salt-based synthesis of sub-5-nm-sized nanowires of hexagonal tungsten oxide (h-WO3 ) that is critically dependent on a substantial proportion of molybdenum (Mo) dopant is described. This dopant-driven morphological transition in tungsten oxide (WO3 ) may be attributable to the collapse of layered structure, followed by nanocluster aggregation, coalescence, and recrystallization to form ultrathin nanowires. Interestingly, due to the structural properties of h-WO3 , the thus-formed ultrathin nanowires are demonstrated to be excellent photocatalysts for the production of ammonia (NH3 ) from nitrogen (N2 ) and water. The ultrathin nanowires exhibit a high photocatalytic NH3 -production activity with a rate of 370 µmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 0.84% at 420 nm, which is more than twice that obtained from the best-performing Mo-doped W18 O49 nanowire catalysts. It is envisaged that the dopant replacement-driven synthetic protocol will allow for rapid access to a series of ultrathin nanostructures with intriguing properties and increase potential applications.

BACKGROUND Sarcoidosis (SARC) is a multisystem inflammatory disease of unknown etiology and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Both of these diseases affect lungs and lymph nodes and share similar clinical manifestations. However, the underlying mechanisms for the similarities and differences in genetic characteristics of SARC and PTB remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three datasets (GSE16538, GSE20050, and GSE19314) were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in SARC and PTB were identified using GEO2R online analyzer and Venn diagram software. Functional enrichment analysis was performed using Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) and R packages. Two protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks were constructed using Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes database, and module analysis was performed using Cytoscape. Hub genes were identified using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS We identified 228 DEGs, including 56 common SARC-PTB DEGs (enriched in interferon-gamma-mediated signaling, response to gamma radiation, and immune response) and 172 SARC-only DEGs (enriched in immune response, cellular calcium ion homeostasis, and dendritic cell chemotaxis). Potential biomarkers for SARC included CBX5, BCL11B, and GPR18. CONCLUSIONS We identified potential biomarkers that can be used as candidates for diagnosis and/or treatment of patients with SARC.
