RESUMO

The fuzzy logic controller, which uses an analytic activation function for the defuzzification procedure, was applied to the position control of a servo pneumatic drive controlled by a proportional valve. The Gaussian shape of input fuzzy sets, with the possibility of their modification, was used to fuzzify the input signal. The control signal was determined by introducing an analytic function instead of defining the fuzzy rule base. In this way, a conventional 2-D fuzzy rule table base is modified into 1-D fuzzy defuzzification based on an analytic function to calculate the controller output. In this control algorithm, the problem of conventional fuzzy logic control, in terms of the exponential growth in rules as the number of input variables increases, is eliminated. The synthesis controller procedure is adjusted to the flow rate characteristic of the proportional valve. The developed control algorithms are verified by computer simulation and by testing on a real pneumatic rodless cylindrical drive.

OBJECTIVE: Peripapillary hyper-reflective ovoid masslike structures (PHOMS) are a new spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) finding. METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal study included patients (n = 212) with multiple sclerosis (MS; n = 418 eyes), 59 healthy controls (HCs; n = 117 eyes), and 267 non-MS disease controls (534 eyes). OCT and diffusion tensor imaging were used. RESULTS: There were no PHOMS in HC eyes (0/117, 0%). The prevalence of PHOMS was significantly higher in patients with MS (34/212, p = 0.001) and MS eyes (45/418, p = 0.0002) when compared to HCs (0/59, 0/117). The inter-rater agreement for PHOMS was 97.9% (kappa = 0.951). PHOMS were present in 16% of patients with relapsing-remitting, 16% of patients with progressive, and 12% of patients with secondary progressive disease course (2% of eyes). There was no relationship of PHOMS with age, disease duration, disease course, disability, or disease-modifying treatments. The fractional anisotropy of the optic radiations was lower in patients without PHOMS (0.814) when compared to patients with PHOMS (0.845, p = 0.03). The majority of PHOMS remained stable, but increase in size and de novo development of PHOMS were also observed. In non-MS disease controls, PHOMS were observed in intracranial hypertension (62%), optic disc drusen (47%), anomalous optic discs (44%), isolated optic neuritis (19%), and optic atrophy (12%). INTERPRETATION: These data suggest that PHOMS are a novel finding in MS pathology. Future research is needed to determine whether development of PHOMS in MS is due to intermittently raised intracranial pressure or an otherwise impaired "glymphatic" outflow from eye to brain. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The clinico-radiological paradox in multiple sclerosis (MS) is well recognized, relevant and yet poorly understood. The suitability of an in vivo model for the clinico-radiological paradox was tested, using internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO) and the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study lesions of the MLF were rated by an experienced MS neuroradiologist blinded to all other information. The presence of an INO was objectively determined by a validated infrared oculography protocol (DEMoNS). Clinical information, including the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire, was obtained. RESULTS: This study included 202 patients with MS. The clinico-radiological paradox occurred in 50 patients (25%). This consisted of 45 patients having an INO without an MLF lesion and five patients with an MLF lesion but without an INO. The visual function overall score was related to the presence of an INO (p = 0.016), but not to MLF lesions seen on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (p = 0.207). A consensus list of potential causes for the clinico-radiological paradox was compiled and the MRI images were deposited in a repository. CONCLUSION: This study provides an objective and quantitative model to investigate the clinico-radiological paradox. Our data suggest that pathology of the MLF is more frequently detected and more clinically relevant by infrared oculography than by MLF lesion rating on MRI.

BACKGROUND: Inner retinal layer (IRL) atrophy is a potential biomarker for neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between cognitive impairment and IRL atrophy in MS. METHODS: Cross-sectional study design, including 217 patients and 59 healthy controls. Subjects were investigated clinically, underwent retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) and comprehensive cognitive assessments. The association between these modalities was evaluated by regression analyses. RESULTS: Of the patients, 44.2% were cognitively impaired. In the absence of multiple sclerosis-associated optic neuritis (MSON), cognitively impaired patients had a significantly lower mean peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL, Δ: 8.13 µm, p < 0.001) and mean macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL, Δ: 11.50 µm, p < 0.001) thickness compared to cognitively preserved patients. There was a significant association between the presence of cognitive impairment and pRNFL (odds ratio (OR): 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-1.18, p = 0.001) and mGCIPL (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.05-1.18, p < 0.001) atrophy. This association was masked by the severe IRL atrophy seen following MSON. CONCLUSION: The strong relationship between cognitive impairment across multiple cognitive domains and atrophy of the pRNFL and mGCIPL in patients who never suffered from MSON suggests that OCT is useful in assessing central nervous system neurodegeneration in MS.

BACKGROUND: Inner retinal layer atrophy in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) has been validated as a structural imaging biomarker for neurodegeneration. OBJECTIVE: To determine how retinal layer thickness relates to high-contrast visual acuity (HCVA), low-contrast visual acuity (LCVA) and vision-related quality of life (QoL) and to investigate the effect of previous episodes on MS-associated optic neuritis (MSON). METHODS: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) was performed in 267 patients with MS. Images were segmented for the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and the macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL). Ophthalmological evaluations included history of MSON, HCVA, LCVA, and vision-related QoL. RESULTS: Independent of MSON, HCVA and LCVA were significantly associated with pRNFL and GCIPL thicknesses. Vision-related QoL was positively associated with pRNFL (ß = 0.92, p = 0.06) and GCIPL (ß = 0.93, p = 0.02) thicknesses. These associations were independent of MSON. Not only binocular but also monocular atrophy of the inner retinal layers was associated with lower vision-related QoL. CONCLUSION: This study showed that retinal atrophy has a significant impact on visual functioning in patients with MS. OCT may therefore provide useful insight to patients with visual dysfunction, and our findings support including OCT and vision-related QoL measures into optic neuritis treatment trials.

Various foaming agents can be used to achieve foaming of the precursors obtained by using the powder metallurgy method. However, the thermal behavior of pure aluminum precursors with different foaming agents has been studied very little in recent times. For the production of aluminum foams with closed cells, 1 wt.% of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), titanium hydride (TiH2), heat-treated TiH2 and zirconium hydride (ZrH2) were used. The foaming capability of the compacted precursors was investigated at temperatures 700, 720 and 750 °C. CaCO3 and TiH2 showed the best foamability at all considered temperatures, while ZrH2 achieved relatively good foaming only at the highest temperature, 750 °C. Due to their low onset temperature of the decomposition compared to the melting point of the unalloyed aluminum, in hydride-based foaming agents the drainage occurred at the bottom part of the foam samples. Among the investigated foaming agents, precursors with heat-treated TiH2 had the worst foaming properties, while CaCO3 showed the best foamability without the occurrence of drainage.

The heat treatment of aluminum alloys is very important in industries where low weight in combination with high wear resistance, good strength, and hardness are important. However, depending on their chemical composition, aluminum alloys are subjected to different mechanical and thermal treatments to achieve the most favorable properties. In this study, an Al-Zn-Mg alloy was heat-treated including solution annealing at 490 °C for 1 h with subsequent artificial aging at 130, 160, and 190 °C for 1, 5, and 9 h. The hardness (HV1) and abrasive wear resistance with three different abrasive grain sizes were measured for all samples. The highest hardness was measured for the samples artificially aged at 130 °C/5 h, 227 HV1, while the lowest hardness was measured for the samples aged at 190 °C/9 h. The highest and the lowest wear resistance was also observed for the same state, i.e., artificially aged at 130 °C/5 h and 190 °C/9 h, respectively. The critical abrasive grain size was detected for some samples, where a decrease in wear rate was observed with an increase in the abrasive grain size from the medium value to the largest. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied to demonstrate the influence of the input parameters on the material wear rate.

Aluminium finds wide application in mechanical engineering due to its low density and corrosion resistance. In this research, aluminium was subjected to two different metal forming technologies-cold forging (upsetting) and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP)-to obtain improvement in its exploitation properties. Parallel to changing mechanical properties by using these two processes, there was a change in the microstructure of the material. The resulting microstructures were examined using an optical microscope. A different treated aluminium was subjected to erosion wear in various time intervals. Wear testing was conducted for two different impingement angles causing abrasive wear and impact wear. The erosion mechanisms were examined by scanning electron microscopy. These results showed that there is no statistically significant difference in erosion wear for different states at the same impingement angle. However, the difference is noticeable at different wear angles. The significance of the difference in wear of the samples treated with the forging and ECAP techniques was validated by statistical analysis with tests of different sensitivities. The results of the t-test showed that ECAPed samples present a statistically significant difference in the loss of mass due to variations in erosion angle during the 30, 45, and 60 min wearing. A substantial difference in the change in sample mass is also visible for the forged state worn for 60 min.

BACKGROUND: The glymphatic system removes neurodegenerative debris. The ocular glymphatic outflow is from the eye to the proximal optic nerve. In multiple sclerosis (MS), atrophy of the optic nerve increases the glymphatic outflow space. Here, we tested whether vitreous haze (VH) can provide novel insights into the relationship between neurodegeneration and the ocular glymphatic system in MS. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 315 persons with MS and 87 healthy controls (HCs). VH was quantified from optical coherence tomography (OCT) volume scans. Neurodegeneration was determined on three-dimensional T1 (3DT1) MRI, lesion detection on fluid-attenuated inversion (FLAIR), and layer thickness on OCT. Generalized estimating equations, corrected for age, were used to analyze associations between VH and metrics for neurodegeneration, demographics, and clinical scales. Group differences were determined between mild, moderate, and severe disability. RESULTS: On the group level, VH scores were comparable between MS and control (p = 0.629). In MS, VH scores declined with disease duration (ß = -0.009, p = 0.004) and age (ß = -0.007, p = 0.001). There was no relation between VH scores and higher age in HCs. In MS patients, VH was related to normalized gray (NGMV, ß = 0.001, p = 0.011) and white matter volume (NWMV, ß = 0.001, p = 0.003), macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (mGCIPL, ß = 0.006, p < 0.001), and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (pRNFL, ß = 0.004, p = 0.008). VH was significantly lower in severe compared to mild disability (mean difference -28.86%, p = 0.058). CONCLUSIONS: There is a correlation between VH on OCT and disease duration, more severe disability and lower brain volumes in MS. Biologically, these relationships suggest accelerated glymphatic clearance with disease-related atrophy.

The green machining of alumina (Al2O3) green bodies generates a certain amount of waste alumina powder. Waste alumina ceramic powder should be disposed of as non-hazardous waste in a legally compliant manner. The influence of additives on the stability of 70 wt.% (≈40 vol.%) alumina-waste alumina water-based suspension was investigated in the presented research. A Box-Behnken three-factor response surface design was used for the preparation of stable highly-concentrated suspensions with the addition of three additives. The optimal amount of each additive was selected according to the obtained results of minimal apparent viscosity: 0.05 wt.% Tiron as dispersant, 0.1 wt.% poly (vinyl alcohol) as binder and 0.2 wt.% magnesium aluminate spinel as abnormal grain growth inhibitor. The analysis of variance was used to identify the contribution of each additive. The zeta potential and sedimentations tests were performed to confirm the suspension stability measurements at different pH values. Alumina particles were optimally dispersed at pH values between 8 and 11. According to the results, the investigated composition of 20 wt.% waste alumina powder (weight content, dry alumina powder), with the addition of optimal amounts of additives, shows a possible application in the production of ceramics by slip casting.

Alumina (Al2O3) and zirconia (ZrO2) have good overall properties and thus are widely used oxide technical ceramics. The biggest drawback of Al2O3 is its low fracture toughness. In contrast, ZrO2 is relatively tough, but is also much more expensive. In order to improve the alumina toughness, composite ceramics are being developed. Slip casting technology has economic advantages over the conventional hot isostatic pressure technology, but problems may arise when preparing stable highly-concentrated suspensions (slip) for filling the mold. The purpose of this study is to prepare aqueous suspensions using 70 wt. % α-Al2O3, with 0, 1, 5 and 10 wt. % of added t-ZrO2. Suspensions were electrosterically stabilized using the ammonium salt of polymethylacrylic acid, an alkali-free anionic polyelectrolyte dispersant. Also, magnesium oxide in form of magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) was used to inhibit the abnormal alumina grain growth during the sintering process. Minimum viscosities were used as stability estimators, where an increase in ZrO2 content required adding more dispersant. After sintering, the Vickers indentation test was used to determine the hardness and the indentation fracture toughness from the measurement of the crack length. Also, the brittleness index (Bi, µm-1/2) was calculated from values of Vickers hardness and the Vickers indentation fracture toughness. It was found that with increasing ZrO2 content the fracture toughness increased, while the hardness as well as the brittleness index decreased. Zirconia loading reduces the crystallite sizes of alumina, as confirmed by the X-ray diffraction analysis. SEM/EDS analysis showed that ZrO2 grains are distributed in the Al2O3 matrix, forming some agglomerates of ZrO2 and some pores, with ZrO2 having a smaller grain size than Al2O3.

Purpose: Eye movement abnormalities are common in multiple sclerosis (MS), and infrared oculography is a noninvasive method for quantification. This study aims to describe and classify abnormalities of visual fixation and their clinical relevance in MS. Methods: A validated standardized infrared oculography protocol, Demonstrate Eye Movement Networks with Saccades, was used for quantifying gaze stability during a fixation task in MS patients and healthy controls. Saccadic intrusions, gaze drift, and stability of fixation around the drift line were used to subclassify MS patients by performing receiver operating characteristic analyses of different parameters. The relationship between the presence of abnormalities of fixation and visual functioning was analyzed using logistic regression models, which was adjusted for possible confounders. Results: This cross-sectional study included 213 subjects with MS and 57 healthy controls. Square wave jerk abnormalities were present in 24% of MS patients. The prevalence was higher in more disabled subjects. The presence of larger square wave jerks (with a higher amplitude) in the MS patients was related to complaints of focusing on stationary objects (odds ratio, 2.2; P = 0.035) and a lower vision-related quality of life (odds ratio, 2.56; P = 0.012). Conclusions: This study provided a comprehensive overview of the characteristics of problems with visual fixation in subjects with MS. The most important and most common finding was the presence of larger square wave jerks during fixation, which was related to visual functioning in daily life.

BACKGROUND: The association of peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness with neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS) is well established. The relationship of the adjoining inner nuclear layer (INL) with inflammatory disease activity is less well understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationship of INL volume changes with inflammatory disease activity in MS.Methods In this longitudinal, multi-centre study, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and clinical data (disability status, relapses and MS optic neuritis (MSON)) were collected in 785 patients with MS (68.3% female) and 92 healthy controls (63.4% female) from 11 MS centres between 2010 and 2017 and pooled retrospectively. Data on pRNFL, GCIPL and INL were obtained at each centre. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in INL volume in eyes with new MSON during the study (N = 61/1562, ß = 0.01 mm3, p < .001). Clinical relapses (other than MSON) were significantly associated with increased INL volume (ß = 0.005, p = .025). INL volume was independent of disease progression (ß = 0.002 mm3, p = .474). CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that an increase in INL volume is associated with MSON and the occurrence of clinical relapses. Therefore, INL volume changes may be useful as an outcome marker for inflammatory disease activity in MSON and MS treatment trials.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is a systematic difference in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness measurements between subsequent updates of pRNFL segmentation software provided by Heidelberg Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: In total, 838 pRNFL scans from 213 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and 61 healthy controls were analyzed. All scans were performed on the same OCT device followed by automated segmentation (HRA 5.6.4.0) and data extraction. Subsequently, all scans were re-segmented with an updated software version (HRA 6.0.7.0). To assess level of agreement between the two algorithms, Bland-Altman Plots were constructed. Paired samples t-test and linear regression analyses were used to investigate for differences in mean thickness and proportional bias respectively. RESULTS: Overall, the updated version showed an overestimation of 0.16µm [95%CI 0.097-0.23, p<0.001] for the global pRNFL thickness compared to the earlier version. The largest differences were found for the nasal inferior (mean ∆ 0.29µm, p<0.001) and temporal inferior (mean ∆ 0.43µm, p<0.001) sectors. Inspection of the Bland-Altman Plot revealed that the difference between the two versions could be up to 6µm for the global mean. There was no proportional bias for the global mean (ß=0.003, p=0.245) nor for any of the separate sectors. CONCLUSION: The data show a significant difference in pRNFL thickness measurements between two subsequent versions of the same segmentation software. Although the mean difference was relatively small, the differences within the individual subject could be considerably higher than the known atrophy rate of 1µm/year in MS.

RESUMO

In this review, a current overview is provided of how optical coherence tomography and infrared oculography can aid in assessing the visual system and CNS in multiple sclerosis (MS). Both afferent and efferent visual disorders are common in MS and visual complaints can have a tremendous impact on daily functioning. Optical coherence tomography and infrared oculography can detect and quantify visual disorders with high accuracy, but could also serve as quantitative markers for inflammation, neurodegeneration and network changes including cognitive decline in MS patients. The assessment of the efferent and afferent visual pathways is relevant for monitoring and predicting the disease course, but is also potentially valuable as an outcome measure in therapeutic trials.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the indentation size effect (ISE) in Vickers hardness of monolithic yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) dental ceramics without and with the addition of dental dye A3. The ISE is analyzed using the Mayer law, a proportional specimen resistance (PSR) model and a modified proportional specimen resistance (MPSR) model. METHODS: Two samples of Y-TZP dental ceramics, trade names BruxZir (provided by Glidewell Laboratories, CA, USA), were investigated. The first sample was polished Y-TZP and the second sample was polished Y-TZP with the addition of dental dye A3, by VITA Classical Shade Guide. The Vickers hardness was measured under the following loads: 0.49N, 0.98N, 1.96N, 4.90, 9.81N and 29.42N. Thirty indentations were made on each sample, under each load. Relationships between the applied load, F, and the resulting indentation size, d, have been analyzed by the Mayer law, the PSR model and the MPSR model. RESULTS: The Meyer index (n) for both Y-TZP dental ceramics is less than 2, which indicates that hardness is dependent on test loads. The PSR model and the MPSR model were used to calculate "true" Vickers hardness or load-independent hardness. SIGNIFICANCE: All applied mathematical models are suitable for the data analysis, which is confirmed with high correlation coefficients, but the best correlation between measured values and mathematical models was achieved with the MPSR model with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999.
