RESUMO

Surface acoustic waves are a powerful tool for controlling quantum systems, including quantum dots (QDs), where the oscillating strain field can modulate the emission wavelengths. We integrate InAsP/InP nanowire QDs onto a thin-film lithium niobate platform and embed them within Si3N4-loaded waveguides. We achieve a 0.70 nm peak-to-peak wavelength modulation at 13 dBm using a single focused interdigital transducer (FIDT) operating at 400 MHz, and we double this amplitude to 1.4 nm by using two FIDTs as an acoustic cavity. Additionally, we independently modulate two QDs with an initial wavelength difference of 0.5 nm, both integrated on the same chip. We show that their modulated emissions overlap, demonstrating the potential to bring them to a common emission wavelength after spectral filtering. This local strain-tuning represents a significant step toward generating indistinguishable single photons from remote emitters heterogeneously integrated on a single chip, advancing on-chip quantum information processing with multiple QDs.

Efficiently coupling single-photon emitters in the telecommunication C-band that are not deterministically positioned to photonic structures requires both spatial and spectral mapping. This study introduces the photoluminescence mapping of telecom C-band self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) by confocal laser scanning microscopy, a technique previously unexplored in this wavelength range which fulfills these two requirements. We consider the effects of distortions inherent to any imaging system but largely disregarded in prior works to derive accurate coordinates from photoluminescence maps. We obtain a position uncertainty below 11 nm for 10% of the QDs when assuming no distortions, highlighting the potential of the scanning approach. After distortion correction, we found that the previously determined positions are on average shifted by 428 nm from the corrected positions, demonstrating the necessity of this correction for accurate positioning. Then, through error propagation, the position uncertainty for 10% of the QDs increases to 110 nm.

Cryogenic confocal microscopy is a powerful method for studying solid state quantum devices such as single photon sources and optically controlled qubits. While the vast majority of such studies have been conducted at temperatures of a few Kelvin, experiments involving fragile quantum effects often require lower operating temperatures. To also allow for electrical dynamic control, microwave connectivity is required. For polarization-sensitive studies, free space optical access is advantageous compared to fiber coupling. Here we present a confocal microscope in a dilution refrigerator providing all the above features at temperatures below 100 mK. The installed high frequency cabling meets the requirements for state-of-the-art spin qubit experiments. As another unique advantage of our system, the sample fitting inside a large puck can be exchanged while keeping the cryostat cold with minimal realignment. Assessing the performance of the instrument, we demonstrate confocal imaging, sub-nanosecond modulation of the emission wavelength of a suitable sample, and an electron temperature of 76 mK. While the instrument was constructed primarily with the development of optical interfaces to electrically controlled qubits in mind, it can be used for many experiments involving quantum transport, solid state quantum optics, and microwave-optical transducers.

RESUMO

The integration of indistinguishable single photon sources in photonic circuits is a major prerequisite for on-chip quantum applications. Among the various high-quality sources, nanowire quantum dots can be efficiently coupled to optical waveguides because of their preferred emission direction along their growth direction. However, local tuning of the emission properties remains challenging. In this work, we transfer a nanowire quantum dot onto a bulk lithium niobate substrate and show that its emission can be dynamically tuned by acousto-optical coupling with surface acoustic waves. The purity of the single photon source is preserved during the strain modulation. We further demonstrate that the transduction is maintained even with a SiO2 encapsulation layer deposited on top of the nanowire acting as the cladding of a photonic circuit. Based on these experimental findings and numerical simulations, we introduce a device architecture consisting of a nanowire quantum dot efficiently coupled to a thin-film lithium niobate rib waveguide and strain-tunable by surface acoustic waves.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Quality Assurance project for stage III non-small cell lung cancer radiotherapy ProCaLung performed a multicentric two-step exercise evaluating mediastinal nodal Target Volume Definition and Delineation (TVD) variability and the opportunity for standardization. The TVD variability before and after providing detailed guidelines and the value of qualitative contour reviewing before applying quantitative measures were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The case of a patient with stage III NSCLC and involved mediastinal lymph nodes was used as a basis for this study. Twenty-two radiation oncologists from nineteen centers in Belgium and Luxembourg participated in at least one of two phases of the project (before and after introduction of ProCaLung contouring guidelines). The resulting thirty-three mediastinal nodal GTV and CTV contours were then evaluated using a qualitative-before-quantitative (QBQ) approach. First, a qualitative analysis was performed, evaluating adherence to most recent guidelines. From this, a list of observed deviations was created and these were used to evaluate contour conformity. The second analysis was quantitative, using overlap and surface distance measures to compare contours within qualitative groups and between phases. A 'most robust' reference volume for these analyses was created using the STAPLE-algorithm and an averaging method. RESULTS: Five GTV and seven CTV qualitative groups were identified. Second step contours were more often in higher-conformity groups (p = 0.012 for GTV and p = 0.024 for CTV). Median Residual Mean Square Distances improved from 2.34 mm to 1.36 mm for GTV (p = 0.01) and from 4.53 mm to 1.58 mm for CTV (p < 0.0001). Median Dice coefficients increased from 0.81 to 0.84 for GTV (p = 0.07) and from 0.82 to 0.89 for CTV (p ≤ 0.001). Using HC-contours only to generate references translated in more robust quantitative evaluations. CONCLUSION: Variability of mediastinal nodal TVD was reduced after providing the ProCaLung consensus guidelines. A qualitative review was essential for providing meaningful quantitative measures.

RESUMO

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT), the only curative therapy for numerous hematological malignancies, carries a significant risk of morbidity and mortality. The patients and families' expectations regarding the procedure, the prognosis uncertainties, as well as the existence of potential new therapeutic possibilities, lead to frequent use of intensive care. Even though the transplant physicians are highly skilled in acute care, their knowledge of palliative approach is limited, making the use of palliative care insufficient and often late. By promoting reflection on the proportionality of care and the patients' quality of life, palliative care may contribute to the allo-HCT patients management. Nevertheless, obstacles to this approach remain. The objective of this work is to propose recommendations to promote the implementation of palliative care into transplant units.
