RESUMO

The patient is a 33-year-old female who, 11 years ago, underwent bilateral posterior chamber phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation due to myopia. She presented with a 2-year history of declining vision in her right eye and sought medical attention. She received femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery combined with pIOL extraction. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy both showed an inverted pIOL in the right eye. Good visual results were achieved, and there were no complications during the six-month follow-up.

RESUMO

We investigated the associations between 2 major tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) polymorphisms, rs1799724 C>T and rs1800629 G>A, and the susceptibility to Crohn's disease (CD) using a meta-analysis framework. The PubMed, EBSCO, Ovid, Wiley, Web of Science, WANFANG, and VIP databases (last updated search in October 2014) were comprehensively searched for relevant published studies. The studies retrieved from database searches were filtered based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the resultant data extracted from the selected studies were analyzed using the Comprehensive Meta-analysis 2.0 software. Eleven case-control studies, containing 2000 CD patients and 3499 healthy controls, were identified as relevant to this meta-analysis. Data extracted from these 11 studies were analyzed to understand the role of the 2 TNF-α polymorphisms in CD. We found that the TNF-α rs1799724 C>T polymorphism increased the susceptibility to CD (allele model: OR = 1.293, 95%CI = 1.090-1.534, P = 0.003; dominant model: OR = 1.258, 95%CI = 1.031-1.534, P = 0.024). In contrast, we found no significant association between the TNF-α rs1800629 G>A polymorphism and CD susceptibility (allele model: OR = 1.005, 95%CI = 0.864-1.170, P = 0.945; dominant model: OR = 0.962, 95%CI = 0.809-1.145, P = 0.667). This meta-analysis showed that the TNF-α rs1799724 C>T polymorphism is associated with CD susceptibility, while the TNF-α rs1800629 G>A polymorphism appeared to have no correlation with the susceptibility to CD.

RESUMO

To ascertain the beneficial effect of puerarin on the myocardium against reperfusion injury, studies on myocardial metabolism and ultrastructure were made. Twelve dogs divided into two equal groups were placed on moderate hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass, and their hearts were subjected to 140 minutes cold cardioplegic arrest and 60 minute reperfusion. In the control group, the hearts were perfused with crystalloid cardioplegic solution (CPS) every 20 minutes during arrest. In the treated group, the hearts received CPS containing puerarin (2 mg/kg). Myocardial oxygen consumption, lactate production, creatine phosphokinase (CPK) release, water content and ultrastructural alterations were determined before ischemia, during cardiac arrest and at reperfusion. The results showed that intermittent infusion of CPS containing puerarin significantly decreased myocardial lactate production during ischemia, as well as myocardial oxygen consumption, CPK release and water content during reperfusion. Under electronmicroscopy, the degree of ischemic damage judged by a scoring method was less pronounced in the puerarin group than in the control. The authors conclude that puerarin has protective effects on the function of hearts that have undergone long periods of arrest and reperfusion.

RESUMO

The concentration of Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and V in the CSF of 38 cases of tuberculous (tbc) meningitis and those in 40 cases of normal control were measured. Results showed that concentration of Mg, Zn or Fe in tested group was higher and that of Cu was lower than that in control group, but there was no significant difference between Mn and V's concentration in 2 groups. The authors suggested that those findings may be helpful in improving the treatment of tbc meningitis.
