INTRODUCTION: Hormesis describes an inverse dose-response relationship, whereby a high dose of a toxic compound is inhibitory, and a low dose is stimulatory. This study explores the hormetic response of low concentrations of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) toward Pseudomonas aeruginosa. METHOD: Samples of P. aeruginosa, i.e. the reference strain, ATCC 27,853, together with six strains recovered from patients with cystic fibrosis, were exposed to ten decreasing ZnO NPs doses (0.78-400 µg/mL). The ZnO NPs were manufactured from Peganum harmala using a chemical green synthesis approach, and their properties were verified utilizing X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. A microtiter plate technique was employed to investigate the impact of ZnO NPs on the growth, biofilm formation and metabolic activity of P. aeruginosa. Real-time polymerase chain reactions were performed to determine the effect of ZnO NPs on the expression of seven biofilm-encoding genes. RESULT: The ZnO NPs demonstrated concentration-dependent bactericidal and antibiofilm efficiency at concentrations of 100-400 µg/mL. However, growth was significantly stimulated at ZnO NPs concentration of 25 µg/mL (ATCC 27853, Pa 3 and Pa 4) and at 12.5 µg/mL and 6.25 µg/mL (ATCC 27853, Pa 2, Pa 4 and Pa 5). No significant positive growth was detected at dilutions < 6.25 µg/mL. similarly, biofilm formation was stimulated at concentration of 12.5 µg/mL (ATCC 27853 and Pa 1) and at 6.25 µg/mL (Pa 4). At concentration of 12.5 µg/mL, ZnO NPs upregulated the expression of LasB ( ATCC 27853, Pa 1 and Pa 4) and LasR and LasI (ATCC 27853 and Pa 1) as well as RhII expression (ATCC 27853, Pa 2 and Pa 4). CONCLUSION: When exposed to low ZnO NPs concentrations, P. aeruginosa behaves in a hormetic manner, undergoing positive growth and biofilm formation. These results highlight the importance of understanding the response of P. aeruginosa following exposure to low ZnO NPs concentrations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the content of Instagram posts about oral cancer and assess its usefulness in promoting oral cancer awareness and early detection practices. METHODS: A systematic search of Instagram for posts about oral (mouth) cancer was conducted using the hashtags #oral cancer and #mouth cancer. Posts usefulness in promoting awareness and early detection was assessed using the early detection usefulness score, and caption readability was assessed using the Flesch Kincaid readability score. RESULTS: A total of 81,000 posts were identified, and 200 posts were thoroughly evaluated. Included posts gathered a total of 48,118 (mean = 420.59 likes) and 27,898 views. Most posts (81.5%) were educational to the lay person, and India and the UK were the major contributors. The most discussed topics were prevention and early detection (55%). Representative clinical images were present in 35.5% of posts. Only 9.5% of posts mentioned the source of information, and the mean usefulness score was only 2.1 out of 10. The mean reading ease score was 56.7 ± 43.8 (range from 1 to 98 out of 100). CONCLUSION: Instagram shows potential for promoting oral cancer awareness, particularly in prevention and early detection. However, concerns regarding content quality, scientific validity, and clarity persist.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study to determine the prevalence of mother postpartum depression and to examine the association between infant characteristics and postpartum depression in the neonatal intensive care unit. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was conducted in three government teaching hospitals in Jordan. A convenience sample of 188 mothers with hospitalized 188 infants in NICU was recruited. Questionnaires were used to collect the quantitative data, which include Infant Demographic Data Questionnaire, Mother Demographic Data Questionnaire and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The study revealed that infant characteristics such as gestational age, medical condition classification, and birth weight are found to be significant factors that influence depression among mothers. RESULTS: The results showed that mothers with infants admitted to NICU experience postpartum depression with a mean of 3.82 and median of 4.04. There were significant differences based on gestational age, birth weight, and classification of medical condition and mothers' postpartum depression. CONCLUSION: Knowing the relationship of certain infant's characteristics and postpartum depression can help to focus on relevant infant characteristics so that timely interventions to improve mothers' well-being can be developed.

Understanding the use of AI in healthcare is essential for the successful implementation of AI-driven healthcare solutions. The aim of this study was to evaluate public perception of AI utilization in healthcare settings. A validated questionnaire assessed general perceptions towards AI utilization, the use of AI by physician , and the use of AI by pharmacists . The study included 770 participants. The median perception score indicated an unfavorable attitude. Participants who had lower education level and those with no employment had a significantly lower perception scores than their counterpart. Participants who reported low income and those who visited the pharmacy five to ten times on average had a higher perception than their counterparts did. The reported negative perception necessitates the implementation of education campaigns to improve AI literacy and dispel any misconceptions and concerns, particularly among individuals with low education, high income, unemployment, and frequent pharmacy visits.

OBJECTIVES: Oral healthcare professionals play a crucial role in guiding patients toward evidence-based choices among the many available oral rinses. In this study, we explored how specific oral rinse formulations affect the viability and modulate critical virulence traits of the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed the effects of these oral rinses on the production of germ tube, production of phospholipase and hemolysin, as well as biofilm formation. RESULTS: We found that oral rinses containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and chlorhexidine (CHX) showed the greatest fungicidal activity with the lowest MFCs (0.38% and 0.78%, respectively). Oral rinses based on zinc chloride and sodium fluoride with Miswak bark extract (MIS) or essential oils (EO) had much lower fungicidal activity (8-16 times lower) compared to CHX and CPC. However, they had a significantly greater impact on the virulence traits of C. albicans. They reduced germ tube production by 86% - 89% (versus 42% for CHX and 29% for CPC), completely inhibited phospholipase and hemolysin production, and together with the CPC-based oral rinse, exerted the greatest reductions in biofilm formation across all tested concentrations. This was in contrast to both the controls and CHX, which had a minimal effect on biofilm formation. CONCLUSION: By inhibiting the virulence factors the oral rinse can have a crippling effect on C. albicans, weakening this opportunistic pathogen and hindering its potential to cause infection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The literature about oral manifestations and dental management in maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is sparse. The aim of this report is to present a new case of MSUD with special emphasis on oral findings and to review the relevant literature. METHOD: A case report of a 4-year-old boy with MSUD was described according to the CARE guidelines for describing case reports. Scoping review of relevant literature was performed, according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, by searching PubMed, Medline, Embase, and the grey literature for articles describing dental management and/or oral manifestations in MSUD. RESULTS: The initial search identified 219 articles, but only 4 met the inclusion criteria. Rampant caries and plaque induced gingivitis were the main oro-dental findings in MSUD. Other oral findings included enamel hypoplasia, skeletal abnormalities, and abnormal oral behaviors. Disease-related factors appeared to play a major role in the development of the observed oral phenotype. CONCLUSION: Oral health in MSUD seems to be influenced by the reliance on semi-synthetic diet and associated neurocognitive complications. Tailored oral health promotional interventions should be included in the multidisciplinary management of patients with MSUD.

BACKGROUND: Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder with physical, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics that is caused by heterozygous mutations in the TCF4 gene. Patients with PTHS might present a unique challenge for oral healthcare professionals because of the associated comorbidities. CASE REPORT: Here we describe a new case of PTHS in a 13-year-old girl with particular emphasis on oro-dental findings and oral healthcare management. Observed oro-dental findings in our case included shallow palate, absence of lingual frenum, gingival enlargement, thick lips and relative microdontia. The patient was unable to tolerate dental care under local anesthesia. Therefore, comprehensive dental treatment was performed under general anesthesia after a careful pre-anesthetic cardio-respiratory, neurological, and hematological evaluation. The patient was closely monitored intra-operatively for breathing rhythm, O2 saturation, and signs of respiratory distress. The patient was observed for 24 h post-op for respiratory distress and was discharged then uneventfully. CONCLUSION: Dental treatment under general anesthesia in these patients might be complicated by the abnormal breathing rhythm, and close monitoring and follow up for signs of respiratory distress after general anesthesia is necessary. Recognition of oral and dental findings might help to expand the phenotype and better characterize rare syndromes.

BACKGROUND AIMS: The current approach for preventing hemolysis of red blood cells (RBCs) in major ABO-incompatible bone marrow (BM) grafts after infusion is to deplete RBCs from BM products before transplantation. Traditionally, manual density separation (MDS) using Ficoll-Hypaque (Cytiva Sweden AB, Uppsala, Sweden has been used to accomplish RBC depletion. This process yields good CD34+ cell recovery, but it requires open manipulation and is labor-intensive and time-consuming. We hypothesized that an alternative automated method using Haemonetics Cell Saver 5+ (Haemonetics Corporation, Boston, MA, USA) would offer equivalent RBC depletion and CD34+ cell recovery. Small marrow volumes from pediatric donors can be processed using Cell Saver (CS) without adding the third-party RBCs necessary for other automated methods. METHODS: This retrospective analysis comprised data from 58 allogeneic BM grafts. RBC depletion and CD34+ cell recovery from BM using MDS (35 grafts) were compared with CS (14 grafts). Nine products underwent RBC depletion using CS with Ficoll (CS-F) when RBC volume was less than 125 mL. RESULTS: Linear regression analysis of log transformation of CD34+ cell recovery adjusted for log transformation of both baseline CD34+ cell content and baseline total volume showed no significant difference between MDS and CS (estimated coefficient, -0.121, P = 0.096). All products contained an RBC volume of less than 0.25 mL/kg post-processing. CD34+ cell recovery with CS-F was comparable to MDS and CS and suitable for pediatric recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: We provide evidence that an automated method using Haemonetics Cell Saver 5+ achieves RBC depletion and CD34+ cell recovery comparable to MDS when adjusting for baseline factors.

The MF30 monoclonal antibody, which binds to the myosin subfragment-2 (S2), was found to increase the extent of myofibril shortening. Yet, previous observations found no effect of this antibody on actin sliding over myosin during in vitro motility assays with purified proteins in which myosin binding protein C (MyBPC) was absent. MF30 is hypothesized to enhance the availability of myosin heads (subfragment-1 or S1) to bind actin by destabilizing the myosin S2 coiled-coil and sterically blocking S2 from binding S1. The mechanism of action likely includes MF30's substantial size, thereby inhibiting S1 heads and MyBPC from binding S2. Hypothetically, MF30 should enhance the ON state of myosin, thereby increasing muscle contraction. Our findings indicate that MF30 binds preferentially to the unfolded heavy chains of S2, displaying positive cooperativity. However, the dose-response curve of MF30's enhancement of myofibril shortening did not suggest complex interactions with S2. Single, double, and triple-stained myofibrils with increasing amounts of antibodies against myosin rods indicate a possible competition with MyBPC. Additional assays revealed decreased fluorescence intensity at the C-zone (central zone in the sarcomere, where MyBPC is located), where MyBPC may inhibit MF30 binding. Another monoclonal antibody named MF20, which binds to the light meromyosin (LMM) without affecting myofibril contraction, showed less reduction in fluorescence intensity at the C-zone in expansion microscopy than MF30. Expansion microscopy images of myofibrils labeled with MF20 revealed labeling of the A-band (anisotropic band) and a slight reduction in the labeling at the C-zone. The staining pattern obtained from the expansion microscopy image was consistent with images from photolocalization microscopy which required the synthesis of unique photoactivatable quantum dots, and Zeiss Airyscan imaging as well as alternative expansion microscopy digestion methods. Consistent with the hypothesis that MF30 competes with MyBPC binding to S2, cardiac tissue from MyBPC knockout mice was stained more intensely, especially in the C-zone, by MF30 compared to the wild type.

BACKGROUND: Interval compression (IC), a regimen of alternating vincristine/doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide/etoposide every 2 weeks, improves survival for localized Ewing sarcoma (ES), with uncertain effect on metastatic disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the charts of pediatric patients with metastatic ES treated with IC at our center between January 2013 and March 2020. We calculated event-free survival and overall survival (OS) and used log-rank tests for univariate comparisons. RESULTS: We identified 34 patients 2.7 to 17.1 years of age (median: 11.6 y). Twenty-six patients (76%) had pulmonary metastases, and 14 (41%) had extrapulmonary metastases. All patients received local control therapy: surgery only (n=7, 21%), radiotherapy only (n=18, 53%), or both (n=9, 26%). The estimated 3-year OS and event-free survival were 62%±9% and 39%±9%, respectively. Patients with pulmonary-only and extrapulmonary metastasis had a 3-year OS of 88%±8% and 27%±13%, respectively ( P =0.0074). Age group (above vs. below 12 y), or primary tumor site did not affect survival, but local control therapy did (surgery only, 83%±15%; combined surgery and radiation, 30%±18%; radiation only, 15%±10%; P =0.048). CONCLUSION: IC yielded similar outcomes for patients with metastatic ES to other reported regimens. We suggest including this approach to other blocks of therapy.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) lung infection has represented a global challenge. Intriguingly, it has been shown that the alveolar lung epithelium expresses little Angiotensin Converting Enzyme receptor protein (ACE2), the entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2. Upper airway establishment of infection and translocation to the lung is well documented but other anatomical niches may be relevant to potentially serious lung infection. ACE2 is heavily expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and gastrointestinal symptoms support a clinical diagnosis of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This suggests a research question and the need to gather patient data exploring potential aerodigestive links in SARS-CoV-2 tranlocation and infection which may be relevant in the peripheral lung. This recognizes anatomical proximity and concepts of bi-directional movement between the Gastrointestinal and lung systems in normal physiology and disease. We have therefore explored the potential for gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) micro aspiration and aeorodigestive pathophysiology in a novel prospective investigation of patients hospitalized with COVID-19. METHODS: This is a prospective descriptive cohort study of 210 patients who were hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. The cohort was divided into three groups of patients based on symptom severity and radiological results. The Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) was used to evaluate the presence and severity of GOR. An RSI greater than 13 is considered to be abnormal. Patients' saliva samples were tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine the level of salivary pepsin among the cohort of patients. RESULTS: A total of 210 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in the study with 55.2% (116/210) classified as mildly ill, 31.9% (67/210) moderately ill and 12.9% (27/210) as severely ill. 34% (72/210) of the patients had an RSI score of over 13 and a median salivary pepsin value of 54 ± 29 ng/ml which suggested an incidence of extraesophageal reflux (EOR) in around a third of patients. The presence of respiratory comorbid conditions, an RSI score of over 13 and a salivary pepsin level of > 76ng/ml increased the risk of developing a more severe COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION: The study showed a high prevalence of EOR among the study cohort and provide the first prospective evidence suggesting the potential for aerodigestive pathophysiology including microaspiration in COVID-19 disease. We believe that the results of our study support the need for more extensive research.

North Dakota leads the U.S.A. in canola (Brassica napus L.) production (5) and approximately one-third of the acreage is located in the northeastern portion of the state. A field survey conducted at the end of the 2021 growing season in northeastern North Dakota revealed the presence of a single field with approximately 15% plants exhibiting whitish discoloration symptoms in the lower third of the stems. The epidermis on the discolored areas was peeling, and the exposed tissues were dark grey to dark-brown. Stem samples taken to the laboratory were surface disinfested with a 5% aqueous solution of NaOCl for 60 sec and rinsed thrice with sterile water. Under aseptic conditions, small stem pieces were plated on V-8 medium amended with 150 mg each of penicillin and streptomycin per liter of medium and incubated at 22 oC under 16 h light daily. Under the microscope, conidiophores were verticillate, hyaline, and had three branches. Conidia were single-celled, hyaline, and measured on average 9.2 + 1.8 µm. Microsclerotia were irregularly shaped. These features match the description of Verticillium longisporum (Stark) Karapapa Bainbr. & Heale, (4). Genomic DNA was extracted from a single-spore culture of an isolate as described by Azizi et al. (1). PCR assays were conducted twice on two independent DNA samples extracted from the same isolate using V. longisporum species-specific primer set VlspF1 and VlspR4 (2) with denaturation at 95 oC for 3 min, followed by 35 cycles of amplification at 94 oC for 1 min then 56 oC for 30 sec and 72 oC for 1 min, followed by a final period at 72 oC for 5 min. The sequenced PCR product, which had 100% homology with GenBank V. longisporum reference samples KY704097 and HE972063, was assigned GenBank accession number OR088215. Pathogenicity tests were conducted in greenhouse. Briefly, twenty seeds of the canola cv. Westar were incubated on a sterilized wet paper towel for five days at 22 oC. The seedlings were carefully lifted, and their root tips cut with scissors. Ten wounded seedlings were immersed in a V. longisporum spore suspension with 2.07 x 106 spores per ml for 30 minutes and the other ten in distilled water (controls). The plants were transplanted into pots (10x10x13 cm) containing Sunshine Mix # 1 potting mix (Fison Horticulture, Vancouver, B. C.). The study was conducted twice, with individual plants as replications. Three weeks later, 20% of inoculated plants had died and at physiological maturity, the rest of them had stunted growth and blackened internal stem tissues while external stem symptoms resembled those found in the field. All control plants reached maturity without symptoms. The pathogen re-isolated from inoculated plants were morphologically identical to the one retrieved from the field. These results confirmed the isolate as Verticillium longisporum. This is the first report of Verticillium stripe on canola in the US. In North America, the disease was first reported in Manitoba, Canada, in 2014 but subsequent surveys showed it is widespread in Canada (3). Identification of genetic resistance against this disease is required to ameliorate the threat this disease represents to US canola production.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is routinely used for optimization of vancomycin therapy, because of exposure-related efficacy and toxicity, in addition to significant variability in pharmacokinetics, which leads to unpredictable drug exposure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate target attainment and TDM of vancomycin in neonates. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective study and collected data from medical records of all neonates who received vancomycin therapy in the neonatal intensive care unit between January 2019 and December 2019. The primary outcome was the proportion of vancomycin courses that reached target trough concentrations of 10-20 mg/L based on appropriate TDM samples collection. Secondary outcomes included proportion of courses with appropriate dose and dose frequency, and proportion of patients who achieved target concentrations after the first dose adjustment. RESULTS: In total, 69 patients were included, with 129 vancomycin courses. The median initial vancomycin trough concentration was 12 (range: 4-36) mg/L. The target trough concentration was achieved in 75% of courses after the initial dose with appropriate TDM, and 84% of courses after TDM-guided dose adjustments. Patients were dosed appropriately in 121/129 courses and TDM was performed correctly according to protocol in 51/93 courses. A dose adjustment was performed in 18/29 courses, to increase target attainment. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that there is a need for an increase in dose to improve target attainment. There is also a need to explore more effective TDM strategies to increase the proportion of neonatal patients attaining vancomycin target trough concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Trichosporon asahii is an opportunistic fungus that causes infections in immunosuppressed patients. It is rarely seen in children and immunocompetent hosts. The mortality rates are still high despite early treatment with proper antifungal drugs. Trichosporon asahii mastoiditis in an immunocompetent child makes this case challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: This report presents a case of Trichosporon asahii mastoiditis which was complicated by transverse sinus thrombosis, in an otherwise healthy 21-month-old girl, and successfully treated with voriconazole. Trichosporon asahii was isolated, in three different occasions, from ear discharge of an immunocompetent healthy child, who presented with prolonged history of fever and received appropriate dosages of multiple types of antimicrobials as an outpatient but without improvement. After 48 h of starting the Voriconzole; post auricular swelling and ear discharge improved significantly. CONCLUSION: A high index of clinical and microbiological suspicion is needed for optimal diagnosis of Trichosporon infection. Trichosporon asahii can also cause infection in immunocompetent individual even without previous history of hospitalization or intervention. We emphasize the importance of early pediatric infectious evaluation and intervention.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates collaborative teamwork by all healthcare providers including pharmacists. Since Pharmacy and Pharm. D students represent the future pharmacists, it is necessary to ensure that they have a good awareness about COVID-19 or any other pandemic that could happen in the future. OBJECTIVE: The study aim was to evaluate Pharmacy and Pharm.D students' knowledge and information needs about COVID-19. METHOD: A cross-sectional web-based design survey was used to assess socio-demographics and knowledge about COVID-19 amongst Pharmacy and Pharm. D students. After being validated, the questionnaire was formatted into Google forms and distributed amongst undergraduate Pharmacy and Pharm. D students in accredited Universities in Jordan. RESULTS: A total of 860 Pharmacy and Pharm.D students completed the questionnaire. Results revealed moderate students' knowledge about COVID-19 (mean knowledge score was 5.6 out of 10). Students had high correct response rates in questions asking about transmission method, treatment, zoonotic transmission and medications to be avoided. However, the students demonstrated low knowledge in questions asking about the incubation period and degree of contagion scores. Several factors were associated with students' level of knowledge including the field of study and academic year. Few students relied on their faculty as the main source of information about the infection and most of them relied on self-reading and social network. CONCLUSION: The results of this study clearly demonstrate unsatisfactory level of knowledge and a lot of information needs about COVID-19 amongst Pharmacy and Pharm. D students. More efforts should be deployed to educate pharmacy students about COVID-19, with an emphasis on the need for more active role by the universities to achieve this goal.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacogenomics (PG) is a modern tool of personalising treatment protocols to improve the efficacy and safety of drug prescriptions. These benefits are offset by a slow uptake in clinical application due to a host of physician factors, patient factors and/or health system factors. Our study, thus, aimed to determine the knowledge, attitude, future expectations and perceived barriers of medical students and physicians in Jordan regarding PG testing. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted between February and August 2019. Physicians and senior medical students from academic and non-academic institutions in North Jordan (n = 424) were surveyed. A structured, self-administered questionnaire was designed and piloted for the purpose of the study. A scoring system for each dimension assessed was calculated and presented using means. Mean scores were compared by sociodemographic and professional variables. RESULTS: The response rate was 70.7%. The mean total PG knowledge score (±SD) was 5.42 (±1.51) out of 10, with a significantly higher mean among respondents aged <30 years (5.54 ± 1.43) compared with those ≥30 years old (5.21 ± 1.62; P = .03). The mean total PG attitude score was 21.18 (±2.58) out of 24, with significant differences by seniority levels evident (P = .03). The future expectations of PG among our sample were high, with a mean score of 10.44 (±1.64) out of 12. The top three perceived barriers in applying PG were the high cost, lack of clinical guidelines, and limited knowledge and awareness. CONCLUSION: Physicians and medical students in Jordan have low overall knowledge, albeit strongly positive attitude and future expectations towards PG, despite the perceived high cost and lack of clinical guidelines. Thus, we strongly recommend adopting a comprehensive educational strategy that aims to integrate PG concepts into medical curricula, and promote the culture of continuous medical education about PG among practitioners.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, incidences of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii have been increasingly reported worldwide. Consequently, A. baumannii was included in the World Health Organization's new list of critical pathogens, for which new drugs are desperately needed. The objective of this research was to study the molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of clinical carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolated from Jordanian hospitals. METHODS: A total of 78 A. baumannii and 8 Acinetobacter spp. isolates were collected from three major hospitals in Jordan during 2018. Disc diffusion and microdilution methods were used to test their susceptibility against 19 antimicrobial agents. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed using the Pasteur scheme, followed by eBURST analysis for all isolates. PCR was used to detect ß-lactam resistance genes, blaOXA-23-like , blaOXA-51-like , and blaNDM-1 . RESULTS: Of the 86 tested isolates, 78 (90.6%) exhibited resistance to carbapenems, whereas no resistance was recorded to tigecycline or polymyxins. Based on the resistance profiles, 10.4% and 84.8% of isolates were classified into multidrug resistant (MDR) or extensively drug resistant (XDR), respectively. The most prevalent carbapenems resistance genes amongst isolates were blaOXA-51-Like (89.5%), followed by blaOXA-23-Like (88.3%) and blaNDM-1 (10.4%). MLST revealed the presence of 19 sequence types (STs), belonging to eight different international complexes. The most commonly detected clonal complex (CC) was CC2, representing 64% of all typed isolates. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to report the clonal diversity of A. baumannii isolates in Jordan. A high incidence of carbapenem resistance was detected in the isolates investigated. In addition, our findings provided evidence for the widespread of blaOXA-23-like harbouring carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii and belonging to CC2. The number of XDR isolates identified in this study is alarming. Thus, periodic surveillance and molecular epidemiological studies of resistance factors are important to improve treatment outcomes and prevent the spread of A. baumannii infections.

BACKGROUND: Lipid control represents a cornerstone in the management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Nevertheless, little research has explored the factors associated with poor lipid control in patients with dyslipidaemia. OBJECTIVE: The study aim was to investigate the variables associated with poor lipid control among patients with dyslipidaemia in Jordan. METHOD: In addition to socio-demographics, disease and medication-related variables, lipid profile including total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and triglyceride and other biomedical variables were collected for patients diagnosed with dyslipidaemia using hospital medical charts at three major outpatient clinics in Jordan. The validated 4-item medication adherence scale and the beliefs about medications questionnaire were used to evaluate medication adherence and medication beliefs among the study participants. The participants were classified to have controlled and uncontrolled dyslipidaemia using recent AHA guidelines. A stepwise forward conditional binary regression was conducted to explore the variables significantly and independently associated with dyslipidaemia control. A P-value of < .05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: A total of 228 patients participated in the study. Most of the study participants (61%) were classified to have uncontrolled lipid profile and 60.1% of them were found to have ASCVD. Regression analysis revealed that increased necessity for dyslipidaemia medications increased the odds of dyslipidaemia control (OR = 1.14), whereas active smoking (OR = 0.42), low medication adherence (OR = 0.0.8) and the presence of ASCVD (odd ratio = 0.24) were significantly associated with poor dyslipidaemia control. CONCLUSION: Lipid profile has considerable scope for improvement in patients with dyslipidaemia in Jordan. Improving medication adherence by emphasising on medication necessity and simplifying the prescribed dosage regimen, particularly in smoking patients and those who have ASCVD, should be particularly considered in future clinical pharmacy service programmes aim at improving lipid control and health outcomes in patients with dyslipidaemia.

The use of agricultural waste materials to remove heavy metals from wastewater is attractive due to its simplicity and economic efficiency. In this study, the applicability of calcined eggshell waste materials (CES) for heavy metals removal from real wastewater were examined via transport column experiment preceded by coagulation/flocculation process.A column packed with granular activated carbon (GAC) is operated in parallel to CES column to evaluate the adsorptive attributes of CES. The findings are assessed from another set of column experiments consisting of sand followed by CES column to evaluate the effect of particulate matter (PM) on CES performance toward heavy metals removal. In coagulation experiment, alum addition at an optimum dose (3.0 g/L) reduced the total suspended solids (TSS) by 80%, whereas the Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cr were reduced by 80%, 77%, 76%, 73%, 56%, and 49%, respectively. Under the current applied hydrodynamic conditions, using sand column before CES column improved the removal efficiencies of Fe, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Cr from 50% to 92%, 55% to 93%, 60% to 87%, 53% to 76%, 45% to 65%, and 41% to 60%, respectively. The whole results illustrate that CES can be competitive to GAC for heavy metals removal from landfill leachate, mainly if applied after PM removal by sand filtration.

BACKGROUND: Heavy tobacco smoking, a hallmark feature of lung cancer, is drastically predominant in Middle Eastern populations. The precise links between nicotine dependence and the functional contribution of the oral microbiota remain unknown in these populations. METHODS: We evaluated the composition and functional capabilities of oral microbiota with relation to cigarette smoking in 105 adults through shotgun metagenomics using buccal swabs. RESULTS: The oral microbiota composition in our study subjects was dominated by the phyla Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, in addition to the genera Prevotella and Veillonella, similar to previously described westernized cohorts. Furthermore, the smoker's oral microbiota represented a significant abundance of Veillonella dispar, Leptotrichia spp. and Prevotella pleuritidis when compared to non-smokers. Within the smoking groups, differential relative abundance testing unveiled relative abundance of Streptobacillus hongkongensis, Fusobacterium massiliense, Prevotella bivia in high nicotine dependent compared to low nicotine dependent profiles based on Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence. Functional profiling showed marked differences between smokers and non-smokers. Smokers exhibited an enrichment of Tricarballylate utilization and Lactate racemization when compared to the non-smokers. According to their nicotine dependence, enrichment of Xanthosine utilization, p-Aminobenzoyl-Glutamate utilization, and multidrug efflux pump in Campylobacter jejuni biosynthesis modules were detected in the high nicotine dependent group. CONCLUSIONS: These compositional and functional differences may provide critical insight on how variations in the oral microbiota could predispose to respiratory illnesses and smoke cessation relapse in cigarette smokers. In particular, the observed enrichment of Fusobacterium and Prevotella in the oral microbiota possibly suggests an intriguing linkage to gut and lung cancers.
