RESUMO

Present research was directed towards the development of new high-performance and cost-effective polysulfone membranes (PSFQ) by introducing ionic liquids (ILs-Cyphos 101 IL and Aliquat 336) into their matrix. Variation of ILs was performed with the aim to find the one that brings new properties and improves the functionality and selectivity of PSFQ membranes in ultrafiltration processes. Based on the obtained results of the rheological study, we established the compatibility of compounds and optimal content of the used ILs, namely 3 wt% and 15 wt% Cyphos 101 IL and compositions varying between 3 and 15 wt % Aliquat 336. Results indicated that the ILs acted as plasticizers when they were added to the system, a helpful aspect in processing membranes used in water decontamination. The efficiency and performance of the membranes were evaluated by their use in the treatment of diclofenac (DCF)-containing waters. Membranes obtained from PSFQ/Aliquat 336 solution containing 15 wt% IL exhibited a 97% removal degree of DCF in the treatment process of 50 mL solution containing 3 mg/L DCF. The separation efficiency was kept constant for four filtration/cleaning cycles. The results indicated an improvement in membrane performance as the amount of IL in their structure increased, which confirms the potential for application in water treatment processes.

RESUMO

New hydrogels nanocomposites, based on iminoboronate hydrogels and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), were obtained and characterised in order to develop a new class of disinfectants able to fight the nosocomial infections produced by duodenoscopes investigation procedures. The formation of the imine linkages between chitosan and the aldehyde was demonstrated using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, while the supramolecular architecture of the developed systems was evaluated via wide-angle X-ray diffraction and polarised optical microscopy. The morphological characterisation of the systems via scanning electron microscopy revealed the highly porous structure of the materials, in which no ZnO agglomeration could be observed, indicating the very fine and homogenous encapsulation of the nanoparticles into the hydrogels. The newly synthetised hydrogels nanocomposites was proven to have synergistic antimicrobial properties, being very efficient as disinfectants against reference strains as: Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Candida albicans.

RESUMO

Organic semiconductors are an attractive class of materials with large application in various fields, from optoelectronics to biomedicine. Usually, organic semiconductors have low electrical conductivity, and different routes towards improving said conductivity are being investigated. One such method is to increase their ordering degree, which not only improves electrical conduction but promotes cell growth, adhesion, and proliferation at the polymer-tissue interface. The current paper proposes a mathematical model for understanding the influence of the ordering state on the electrical properties of the organic semiconductors. To this end, a series of aromatic poly(azomethine)s were prepared as thin films in both amorphous and ordered states, and their supramolecular and electrical properties were analyzed by polarized light microscopy and surface type cells, respectively. Furthermore, the film surface characteristics were investigated by atomic force microscopy. It was established that the manufacture of thin films from mesophase state induced an electrical conductivity improvement of one order of magnitude. A mathematical model was developed in the framework of a multifractal theory of motion in its Schrodinger representation. The model used the order degree of the thin films as a fractality measure of the physical system's representation in the multifractal space. It proposed two types of conductivity, which manifest at different ranges of fractalization degrees. The mathematical predictions were found to be in line with the empirical data.
