Polysaccharides are one of the main active ingredients of Polygonum sibiricum (PS), which is a food and medicine homolog used throughout Chinese history. The antidepressant-like effects of PSP and its underlying mechanisms remain elusive, especially the regulation of microglial polarization. The current study determined the chemical composition and structural characteristics of PSP. Then, the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) procedure was carried out on the zebrafish for 5 weeks, and PSP was immersed for 9 days (1 h/d). The body weight of zebrafish was monitored, and behavioral tests, including the novel tank test and light and dark tank test, were performed to evaluate the antidepressant-like effects of PSP. Then, the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, the levels of peripheral inflammation, neuronal and blood-brain barrier damage in the mesencephalon and telencephalon, and the mRNA expression of M1/M2 phenotype genes in the brain were examined. PSP samples had the typical structural characteristics of polysaccharides, consisting of glucose, mannose, and galactose, with an average Mw of 20.48 kDa, which presented porous and agglomerated morphologies. Compared with untreated zebrafish, the depression-like behaviors of CUMS-induced zebrafish were significantly attenuated. PSP significantly decreased the levels of cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokines in the body of CUMS-induced depressive zebrafish. Furthermore, PSP remarkably reversed the neuronal and blood-brain barrier damage in the mesencephalon and telencephalon and the mRNA expression of M1/M2 phenotype genes in the brain. These findings indicated that the antidepressant-like effects of PSP were related to altering the HPI axis hyperactivation, suppressing peripheral inflammation, inhibiting neuroinflammation induced by microglia hyperactivation, and modulating microglial M1/M2 polarization. The current study provides the foundations for future examinations of PSP in the functional foods of emotional regulation.

Obesity has become a major disease that endangers human health. Studies have shown that dietary interventions can reduce the prevalence of obesity and diabetes. Resistant starch (RS) exerts anti-obesity effects, alleviates metabolic syndrome, and maintains intestinal health. However, different RS types have different physical and chemical properties. Current research on RS has focused mainly on RS types 2, 3, and 4, with few studies on RS1. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of RS1 on obesity and gut microbiota structure in mice. In this study, we investigated the effect of potato RS type 1 (PRS1) on obesity and inflammation. Mouse weights, as well as their food intake, blood glucose, and lipid indexes, were assessed, and inflammatory factors were measured in the blood and tissues of the mice. We also analyzed the expression levels of related genes using PCR, with 16S rRNA sequencing used to study intestinal microbiota changes in the mice. Finally, the level of short-chain fatty acids was determined. The results indicated that PRS1 promoted host obesity and weight gain and increased blood glucose and inflammatory cytokine levels by altering the gut microbiota structure.

RESUMO

Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (A. sinensis) is a medicinal and edible values substance, which could promote blood circulation and enrich blood. It possesses rich chemical components and nutrients, which have significant therapeutic effects on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It is commonly used for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in the elderly, especially in improving ischemic damage to the heart and brain, protecting vascular cells, and regulating inflammatory reactions. This article reviews the main pharmacological effects and clinical research of A. sinensis on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in recent years, explores the effect of its chemical components on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases by regulating the expression of functional proteins and inhibiting inflammation, anti-apoptosis, and antioxidant mechanisms. It provides a reference for further research on A. sinensis and the development of related drugs. It provides a new reference direction for the in-depth research and application of A. sinensis in the prevention, improvement, and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: It is widely acknowledged that hypoxia and m6A/m5C/m1A RNA modifications promote the occurrence and development of tumors by regulating the tumor microenvironment. This study aimed to establish a novel liver cancer risk signature based on hypoxia and m6A/m5C/m1A modifications. METHODS: We collected data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA-LIHC), the National Omics Data Encyclopedia (NODE-HCC), the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC), and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases for our study (GSE59729, GSE41666). Using Cox regression and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method, we developed a risk signature for liver cancer based on differentially expressed genes related to hypoxia and genes regulated by m6A/m5C/m1A modifications. We stratified patients into high- and low-risk groups and assessed differences between these groups in terms of gene mutations, copy number variations, pathway enrichment, stemness scores, immune infiltration, and predictive capabilities of the model for immunotherapy and chemotherapy efficacy. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed a significantly correlated between hypoxia and methylation as well as m6A/m5C/m1A RNA methylation. The three-gene prognosis signature (CEP55, DPH2, SMS) combining hypoxia and m6A/m5C/m1A regulated genes exhibited strong predictive performance in TCGA-LIHC, NODE-HCC, and ICGC-LIHC-JP cohorts. The low-risk group demonstrated a significantly better overall survival compared to the high-risk group (p < 0.0001 in TCGA, p = 0.0043 in NODE, p = 0.0015 in ICGC). The area under the curve (AUC) values for survival at 1, 2, and 3 years are all greater than 0.65 in the three cohorts. Univariate and Multivariate Cox regression analyses of the three datasets indicated that the signature could serve as an independent prognostic predictor (p < 0.001 in the three cohorts). The high-risk group exhibited more genome changes and higher homologous recombination deficiency scores and stemness scores. Analysis of immune infiltration and immune activation confirmed that the signature was associated with various immune microenvironment characteristics. Finally, patients in the high-risk group experienced a more favorable response to immunotherapy, and various common chemotherapy drugs. CONCLUSION: Our prognostic signature which integrates hypoxia and m6A/m5C/m1A-regulated genes, provides valuable insights for clinical prediction and treatment guidance for liver cancer patients.

Polygonum sibiricum polysaccharides (PSP) are one of the main active components of Polygonatum sibiricum, which is a traditional Chinese medicine with food and drug homologies. Recent studies have revealed the antidepressant-like effects of PSP. However, the precise mechanisms have not been clarified. Therefore, the present study was conducted to explore that whether PSP could exert the antidepressant-like effects via microbiota-gut-brain (MGB) axis in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depressive mice by transplantation of fecal microbiota (FMT) from PSP administration mice. FMT markedly reversed the depressive-like behaviors of CUMS-induced mice in the open field, the sucrose preference, the tail suspension, the forced swimming, and the novelty-suppressed feeding tests. FMT significantly increased the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine and norepinephrine, decreased the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus and reduced the levels of corticosterone, an adrenocorticotropic-hormone, in the serum of CUMS-induced mice. In addition, administration of PSP and FMT significantly increased the expressions of ZO-1 and occludin in the colon and decreased the levels of lipopolysaccharide and interferon-γ in the serum of CUMS-induced mice. Moreover, administration of PSP and FMT regulated the signaling pathways of PI3K/AKT/TLR4/NF-κB and ERK/CREB/BDNF. Taken together, these findings indicated that PSP exerted antidepressant-like effects via the MGB axis.

Diabetes is a serious chronic metabolic disease that causes complications over time, bringing serious public health challenges that affect different countries across the world. The current clinical drugs for diabetes may lead to adverse effects such as hypoglycemia and liver and abdominal distension and pain, which prompt people to explore new treatments for diabetes without side effects. The research objective of this review article is to systematically review studies on vitamins and diabetes and to explain their possible mechanism of action, as well as to assess the role of vitamins as drugs for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. To achieve our objective, we searched scientific databases in PubMed Central, Medline databases and Web of Science for articles, using "vitamin" and "diabetes" as key words. The results of numerous scientific investigations revealed that vitamin levels were decreased in humans and animals with diabetes, and vitamins show promise for the prevention and/or control of diabetes through anti-inflammation, antioxidation and the regulation of lipid metabolism. However, a few studies showed that vitamins had no positive effect on the development of diabetes. Currently, studies on vitamins in the treatment of diabetes are still very limited, and there are no clinical data to clarify the dose-effect relationship between vitamins and diabetes; therefore, vitamins are not recommended as routine drugs for the treatment of diabetes. However, we still emphasize the great potential of vitamins in the prevention and treatment of diabetes, and higher quality studies are needed in the future to reveal the role of vitamins in the development of diabetes.

Dendrobium Sw. (family Orchidaceae) is a renowned edible and medicinal plant in China. Although widely cultivated and used, less research has been conducted on differential Dendrobium species. In this study, stems from seven distinct Dendrobium species were subjected to UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS analysis. A total of 242 metabolites were annotated, and multivariate statistical analysis was employed to explore the variance in the extracted metabolites across the various groups. The analysis demonstrated that D. nobile displays conspicuous differences from other species of Dendrobium. Specifically, D. nobile stands out from the remaining six taxa of Dendrobium based on 170 distinct metabolites, mainly terpene and flavonoid components, associated with cysteine and methionine metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and galactose metabolism. It is believed that the variations between D. nobile and other Dendrobium species are mainly attributed to three metabolite synthesis pathways. By comparing the chemical composition of seven species of Dendrobium, this study identified the qualitative components of each species. D. nobile was found to differ significantly from other species, with higher levels of terpenoids, flavonoids, and other compounds that are for the cardiovascular field. By comparing the chemical composition of seven species of Dendrobium, these qualitative components have relevance for establishing quality standards for Dendrobium.

As an essential trace element in the human body, selenium (Se) has various physiological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer activity. Selenium-enriched proteins/peptides (SePs/SePPs) are the primary forms of Se in plants and animals, and they are the vital carriers of its physiological activities. On the basis of current research, this review systematically describes the extraction methods (aqueous, alkaline, enzymatic, auxiliary, etc.) and detection methods (HPLC-MS/MS, GC-ICP-MS, etc.) for SePs/SePPs in plants. Their bioavailability and bioactivity, and the effect of processing are also included. Our review provides a comprehensive understanding and theoretical guidance for the utilization of selenium-enriched proteins/peptides.

To identify the ideal soybean protein isolate for texturized vegetable protein processing, the effect of different soybean protein isolates on texturized vegetable protein composition was studied. Three different types of soybean protein isolates were selected and analyzed for functional properties (water holding capacity (WHC), emulsifying properties, foaming properties), amino acid content, and protein secondary structure. Then, using the same formulation, the soybean protein isolates were extruded to produce texturized vegetable protein, and its textural properties, degree of texturization, microstructure, free sulfhydryl (free SH), and disulfide (S-S) content were determined. Lastly, a correlation analysis was performed to examine the connection between soybean protein isolates and texturized vegetable proteins. After correlation analysis, the soybean protein isolate functional properties that affect the textural properties of the texturized vegetable protein were as follows: the emulsifying property affected the hardness, adhesiveness, springiness, gumminess, and chewiness of the texturized vegetable proteins; and the foaming property affected the gumminess, chewiness, and the degree of texturization of the texturized vegetable proteins. In addition, 16 amino acids including threonine (Thr), methionine (Met), and arginine (Arg) affect texturized vegetable proteins, mainly with respect to adhesiveness, springiness, and free SH. The effects of secondary structure (α-helix, random coil) on texturized vegetable proteins were degree of texturization, resilience, and cohesion, respectively. Therefore, choosing the soybean protein isolate with better emulsifying and foaming properties provides a more suitable approach for processing texturized vegetable protein.

This study investigated the effect of oat ß-glucan as a fat substitute on the structure formation, texture, and sensory properties of pea protein yogurt. The results showed that the incorporation of 0.5% ß-glucan significantly accelerated the lactic acid bacteria-induced fermentation, with the time for reaching the target pH of 4.6 shortened from 3.5 h to 3 h (p < 0.05); increased the plastic module (G') from 693 Pa to 764 Pa when fermenting 3 h (p < 0.05); and enhanced the water-holding capacity from 77.29% to 82.15% (p < 0.05). The identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in low-fat pea protein yogurt by GC-IMS revealed a significant decrease in aldehydes and a significant increase in alcohols, ketones and acids in the pea yogurt after fermentation (p < 0.05). Among them, the levels of acetic acid, acetone, 2,3-butanedione, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, and ethyl acetate all significantly increased with the addition of oat ß-glucan (p < 0.05), thereby providing prominent fruity, sweet, and creamy flavors, respectively. Combined with the results of sensory analysis, the quality characteristics of pea protein yogurt with 1% oil by adding 1% oat ß-glucan were comparable to the control sample with 3% oil. Therefore, oat ß-glucan has a good potential for fat replacement in pea protein yogurt.

Autosomal recessive nonsyndromic auditory neuropathy is attributed to a genetic etiology. We identified a compound heterozygous missense variant, c.G736A (p.G246S) and c.C2954T (p.T985 M) in TNN of affected patients in a pedigree via candidate gene screening and exome sequencing. To determine the genetic etiology of deafness in the pedigree with a heterozygous missense variant in the gene TNN encoding tenascin-W associated with autosomal recessive nonsyndromic auditory neuropathy, the cochlear expression of tenascin-W was evaluated at mRNA and protein levels in mice, and Tnn knock out mice were generated and utilized to study the function of Tnn in the auditory system. Immunofluorescence stainings showed that tenascin-W was mainly expressed in the somatic cytoplasm of spiral ganglion neurons of mice. Homozygous Tnn knockout was lethal in mice, whereas Tnn heterozygous mice showed decreases in spiral ganglion neuron density and progressive hearing loss. We demonstrate that tenascin-W is expressed in the murine cochleae and is essential for the development of spiral ganglion neurons. An abnormal expression of tenascin-W can influence the development and function of SGNs and affect the function of the auditory system.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus screen in female cervical cells has demonstrated values in clinical diagnosis of precancerous lesions and cervical cancers. Human papillomavirus tests of cervical cells by utilizing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method provides human papillomavirus infection status however no further virus in situ information. Although it is well known that the tests of human papillomavirus E6/E7 RNA location in infected cervical cells and cell internal malignancy molecular will provide clues for gynecologists to evaluate disease progression, there are technique difficulties to preserve RNAs in cervical scraped cells for in situ hybridization. METHODS: In current study, after developing a cervical cell collection and preparation method for RNA in situ hybridization, we captured the chance to screen 98 patient cervical cell samples and detected human papillomavirus E6/E7 mRNAs of high-risk subtypes, low-risk subtypes and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) TERC in the cells. RESULTS: There were 69 samples exhibited consistence between human papillomavirus PCR and human papillomavirus RNA in situ hybridization results in cervical collected cells. Among them, 23 were both positive and 46 were both negative. In the rest 29 samples, 8 were HPV RNAscope positive, either high risk or low risk subtypes, however HPV PCR negative. Another 9 samples were HPV PCR results positive whereas RNAscope negative. The last 12 samples were HPV positive detected by both RNAscope and PCR methods, however inconsistent between high-risk and low-risk subtypes. In RNAscope positive samples, viral E6/E7 mRNAs were observed to distribute in cervical scraped cell nucleus and cytoplasm. Moreover, HPV viral RNA gathered clusters were observed outside of cells through human papillomavirus RNA in situ hybridization detection. Varied numbers of human papillomavirus infective cells were detected by RNAscope assay in different patients even though they were all human papillomavirus high-risk subtype positive discovered by human papillomavirus PCR results. A cell malignancy related long non-coding RNA, TERC, has been detected in seven patient samples. The patient follow-up information was further analyzed with RNAscope results which indicated a combination of RNAscope positive signals of TERC and human papillomavirus high risk signals in more than 10 cells (cytoplasm or nucleus) may connect with cervical lesion fast progression which deserves further studies in the future. C CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, current study has provided an observable clue for gynecologists to evaluate human papillomavirus infection stage and cell malignancy status which may contribute for assessment of cervical disease progression.

A new plasma processing-based methodology for enhancing the streaming potential (Vs) that may be obtained in electrokinetic flows for a given pressure gradient over a silicon surface-based microchannel is indicated. The dependence of the Vs on both the surface zeta potential and the electrolyte slip length was carefully determined through a series of experiments involving the variation of CF4- and Ar-based plasma parameters, incorporating pressure, exposure time, and power. It was determined through analytical estimates that, while the zeta potential is always increased, the slip length may be diminished under certain conditions. A record value of ∼0.1 mV/Pa was obtained using CF4 plasma at 500 W, 10 mTorr, and 300 s of exposure. The implications of the work extend to the investigation of whether smooth surfaces may be effective for generating large Vs's for new modalities of electrical voltage sources in microfluidics-based applications.

RATIONALE: Oil crops and products are important food materials in daily life. Pesticide residues in food could directly and indirectly endanger human health. However, the method for detecting multiple pesticides simultaneously is limited. In this study, an easy and efficient method for the simultaneous determination of 38 pesticides in oil crops and products was established and validated. METHODS: All samples were treated with a modified QuEChERS procedure followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS/MS) analysis. Mass spectrometry was performed in positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mode. The mobile phase consisted of 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The column used was a Poroshell 120 EC-C18 and the flow rate was 0.3 mL/min. RESULTS: The method was validated so that the calibration curves for all pesticides had good linearity in the concentration range of 10-1000 µg/L with correlation coefficients (R2 ) above 0.9945. The recovery rates were between 70.1 and 120.0%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) (n = 6) ≤20.0%. The limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.5 to 10 µg/kg, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 2.0 to 30 µg/kg, and the matrix effect (ME) ranged from -18.77 to 19.33%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The method proved to be accurate, sensitive, and stable. It can be used for rapid screening and confirmation of 38 pesticide residues in oil crops and products which takes 10 min for sample extraction and clean-up with less requirement of solvents. This study provides a technical basis for regulatory analysis and quality supervision of foods.

BACKGROUND: Dendrobium is a genus of plants used as traditional Chinese herbal medicines, with high economic and medicinal value. METHODS AND RESULTS: To reveal the mechanism of flavonoid biosynthesis in Dendrobium, the metabolites and transcriptomes of four Dendrobium species (D. chrysotoxum, D. nobile, D. fimbriatum, and D. denneanum) were analyzed comprehensively. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed ten flavonoid compounds in Dendrobium. In total, 100,096 unigenes were obtained from the transcript database of the four Dendrobium species. Among the identified differentially expressed genes, 51 were associated with flavonoid biosynthesis, and 670 differentially expressed transcription factors were predicted, including 194 MYB, 87 bHLH, and 100 WRKY family transcription factors, respectively. Transcriptome analysis showed that the expression levels of structural genes such as chalcone synthase (CHS), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), and flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase (F3'H) were lower in D. chrysotoxum, D. nobile, and D. fimbriatum than those in D. denneanum, which may be the main reason for the low flavonoid contents in D. chrysotoxum, D. nobile, and D. fimbriatum. CONCLUSIONS: The expression level of structural genes corresponded to the accumulation level of flavonols in the different Dendrobium species. The results deepen the understanding of the molecular mechanism of flavonoid biosynthesis in Dendrobium and provide novel insights into the synthesis and accumulation of flavonoids in Dendrobium.

There are currently few effective and safe pharmacologic means for inducing beige adipogenesis in humans. This study highlights the role of potato protease inhibitor II (PPI II) in regulating the browning of adipose tissue. The in vitro results showed that PPI II increased the expression of the uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) protein and gene and beige-specific genes, including Cd137, Cited1, Tbx1, and Tmem26 in vitro. PPI II treatment for three months in diet-induced obesity mice increased the levels of the UCP1 protein in white adipose tissue, causing elevated energy expenditure, thus preventing obesity and improving glucose tolerance. Mechanistic studies further revealed that PPI II regulated the abundance and activity of ß3 adrenergic receptor (ß3 -AR) in white adipocytes. Chemical-inhibition experiments revealed the crucial role of ß3 -AR-dependent protein kinase A (PKA)-p38 kinase (p38)/extracellular signal-related kinase1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling in PPI II-mediated browning program of white adipose tissues. In summary, our findings highlight the role of PPI II in beige adipocyte differentiation and thermogenesis and provide new insights into its use in preventing obesity.

Mounting evidence suggests that there is a close association between chronic sleep deprivation (CSD) and cognitive deficits. The animal model of CSD-induced cognitive deficits is commonly used to seek potential treatments. Soy isoflavones (SI) have been reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and neuroprotective effects. In the present study, the effects of SI on CSD-induced memory impairment were investigated. The mice were subjected to the sleep interruption apparatus and continuously sleep deprived for 2 weeks, while orally administrated with SI (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg) or Modafinil (MOD,100 mg/kg) during the CSD process. Immediately after the SD protocol, cognitive performance of mice was evaluated by the object location recognition (OLR) test, the novel object recognition (NOR) test, and the Morris water maze (MWM) task, as well as the hippocampus, was extracted for evaluation of oxidative stress parameters and inflammation levels through biochemical parameter assay and western blotting analysis. The results showed that SI administration remarkably improved the cognitive performance of CSD-treated mice in OLR, NOR, and MWM tests. In addition, SI significantly elevated total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities, decreased malondialdehyde level, promoting antioxidant element nuclear erythroid-2-related factor 2, and its downstream targets, including heme oxygenase 1, and quinone oxidoreductase 1 protein expressions. Moreover, SI treatment significantly suppressed nuclear factor kappa B p65, nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase 2 activation, as well as the pro-inflammatory cytokines (Tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], interleukin-6 [IL-6], and interleukin-1ß [IL-1ß]) release in the hippocampus of CSD-treated mice. In summary, the current study provides an insight into the potential of SI in treatment of cognitive deficits by CSD.

Soybean protein hydrolysates were prepared using two proteolytic enzymes (Alcalase and Protamex) and the degree of hydrolysis (DH) and their functional and antioxidant properties were evaluated. The highest DH value was 20%, with a yield of 19.77% and protein content of 51.64%. The total amino acid content was more than 41% for all protein hydrolysates. The protein hydrolysates from Protamex at pH 2.0 had excellent solubility, emulsifying activity, and foaming capacity, at 83.83%, 95.03 m2/g, and 93.84%, respectively. The water-holding capacity was 4.52 g/g for Alcalase, and the oil-holding capacity was 4.91 g/g for Protamex. The antioxidant activity (62.07%), as measured by the samples' reaction with DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and the reducing power (0.27) were the strongest for Protamex. An ABTS activity rate of 70.21% was recorded for Alcalase. These findings indicated a strong potential for the utilization of soybean protein hydrolysates to improve the functional properties and antioxidant activity of soybeans as well as their nutritional values.

In recent years, the prevalence of diabetes is on the rise, globally. Resistant starch (RS) has been known as a kind of promising dietary fiber for the prevention or treatment of diabetes. Therefore, it has become a hot topic to explore the hypoglycemic mechanisms of RS. In this review, the mechanisms have been summarized, according to the relevant studies in the recent 15 years. In general, the blood glucose could be regulated by RS by regulating the intestinal microbiota disorder, resisting digestion, reducing inflammation, regulating the hypoglycemic related enzymes and some other mechanisms. Although the exact mechanisms of the beneficial effects of RS have not been fully verified, it is indicated that RS can be used as a daily dietary intervention to reduce the risk of diabetes in different ways. In addition, further research on hypoglycemic mechanisms of RS impacted by the RS categories, the different experimental animals and various dietary habits of human subjects, have also been discussed in this review.

The electrokinetic streaming potential (Vs) obtained through electrolyte flow in a microchannel is shown to be related to the underlying surface pattern. Pillar, mesh, and groove patterns were studied for comparing the relative magnitudes of the Vs with air-/liquid-filled surfaces. A record value of the related figure of merit, in terms of the developed Vs per-unit applied pressure, of ∼0.127 mV/Pa, was observed in a mesh texture liquid-filled surface (LFS) impregnated with an electrolyte-immiscible oil. The study indicated that increasing the solid fraction of the pattern surface decreases the effective slip length while enhancing the overall channel ζ potential. Consequently, maximizing the obtained Vs implies a balancing of the slip with the surface potential, with plausibly more significance of the latter. The work has implications for higher-efficiency electrical voltage sources.
