RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Microbial cells capability to tolerate the effect of various antimicrobial classes represent a major worldwide health concern. The flexible and multi-components nanocomposites have enhanced physicochemical characters with several improved properties. Thus, different biological activities of biosynthesized starch/silver-selenium nanocomposite (St/Ag-Se NC) were assessed. METHODOLOGY: The St/Ag-Se NC was biosynthesized using Cladosporium cladosporioides CBS 174.62 (C. cladosporioides) strain. The shape and average particle size were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM), respectively. On the other hand, the St/Ag-Se NC effect on two cancer cell lines and red blood cells (RBCs) was evaluated and its hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging effect was assessed. Moreover, its effects on various microbial species in both planktonic and biofilm growth forms were examined. RESULTS: The St/Ag-Se NC was successfully biosynthesized with oval and spherical shape and a mean particle diameter of 67.87 nm as confirmed by the HR-TEM analysis. St/Ag-Se NC showed promising anticancer activity toward human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines where IC50 were 21.37 and 19.98 µg/ml, respectively. Similarly, little effect on RBCs was observed with low nanocomposite concentration. As well, the highest nanocomposite H2O2 scavenging activity (42.84%) was recorded at a concentration of 2 mg/ml. Additionally, Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) ATCC 12,228 and Candida albicans (C. albicans) ATCC 10,231 were the highly affected bacterial and fungal strains with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 18.75 and 50 µg/ml, respectively. Moreover, the noticeable effect of St/Ag-Se NC on microbial biofilm was concentration dependent. A high biofilm suppression percentage, 87.5% and 68.05%, were recorded with S. epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) when exposed to 1 mg/ml and 0.5 mg/ml, respectively. CONCLUSION: The biosynthesized St/Ag-Se NC showed excellent antioxidant activity, haemocompatibility, and anti-proliferative effect at low concentrations. Also, it exhibited promising antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities.

RESUMO

Interest in plant-based diets has been on the rise in recent years owing to the potential health benefits of their individual components and the notion that plant-based diets might reduce the incidence of several diseases. Egyptian dukkah and Syrian za'atar are two of the most historic and famous Middle Eastern herbal blends used for their anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic effects. Headspace SPME-GCMS and HPLC-DAD were adopted for characterizing the aroma profile and phenolic compounds of both herbal blends, respectively. Further, vapor-phase minimum inhibitory concentration was employed for assessing each blend's antibacterial potential, while their antioxidant potential was estimated via in vitro antioxidant assays. SPME headspace analysis indicated the abundance of ethers and monoterpene hydrocarbons, while HPLC revealed the presence of several phenolics including rosmarinic acid, ferulic acid, and rutin. Biological investigations affirmed that vapor-phase of the tested blends exhibited antibacterial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, while the antioxidant potential of the blends was investigated and expressed as Trolox (125.15 ± 5.92 to 337.26 ± 13.84 µM T eq/mg) and EDTA (18.08 ± 1.62 to 51.69 41 ± 5.33 µM EDTA eq/mg) equivalent. The presented study offers the first insight into the chemical profile and biological activities of both dukkah and za'atar.

RESUMO

The arsenic (As) pollution of water has been eliminated via intensive scientific efforts, with the purpose of giving safe drinking water to millions of people across the world. In this study, the adsorption of As(V) from a synthetic aqueous solution was verified using a Bentonite-Anthracite@Zetag (BT-An@Zetag) composite. The SEM, FT-IR, XRD, DSC, TGA, and SBET techniques were used to characterize the (BT-An@Zetag) composite. The adsorption of As(V) was explored using batch adsorption under varied operating scenarios. Five kinetic modelswere used to investigate kinetic data, whereas three isotherms had been used to fit empirical equilibrium data. According to the findings, the adsorption mechanism of As(V) was best described by the Freundlich isotherm with a maximum monolayer coverage of 38.6 mg/g showing pseudo-second-order mode. The estimated enthalpy (H°) indicates that the adsorption process is both chemical and endothermic. The calculated free energy (G°) indicates that the reaction is nonspontaneous. After four sequential adsorption cycles, the produced BT-An@Zetag composite demonstrated good reusability and a greater adsorption affinity for As(V) ions. Overall, the BT-An@Zetag composite is suited for removing arsenic from wastewater using adsorption as a cost-effective and efficient technique.

RESUMO

Waste from crustaceans has adverse effects on the environment. In this respect, shrimp waste was valorized for producing chitosan nanoparticles as a source for eco-friendly nano-nitrogen fertilizer. The application of nano-nitrogen fertilizers is a valuable alternative approach in agriculture due to its potential for reducing the application of mineral nitrogen fertilizers and increasing yield quality and quantity, thereby helping to reduce the worldwide food shortage. Chitosan nanoparticles were foliar sprayed at three volumes (0, 7, and 14 L/ha) and compared with mineral nitrogen fertilizer (M-N) sprayed at three volumes (0, 120, and 240 kg N/ha) and their combination on two wheat cultivars (Misr-1 and Gemaiza-11) during two consecutive seasons (2019/2020 and 2020/2021) in order to evaluate the agronomic response. The synthesized chitosan nanoparticles displayed characteristic bands of both Nan-N and urea/chitosan from 500-4000 cm-1. They are stable and have a huge surface area of 73.21 m2 g-1. The results revealed significant differences among wheat cultivars, fertilization applications, individual or combined, and their interactions for yield-contributing traits. Foliar application of nano-nitrogen fertilizer at 14 L/ha combined with mineral fertilizer at 240 kg/ha significantly increased total chlorophyll content by 41 and 31% compared to control; concerning plant height, the two cultivars recorded the tallest plants (86.2 and 86.5 cm) compared to control. On the other hand, the heaviest 1000-grain weight (55.8 and 57.4 g) was recorded with treatment of 120 kg Mn-N and 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the control (47.6 and 45.5 g). The Misr-1 cultivar achieved the highest values for grain yield and nitrogen (1.30 and 1.91 mg/L) and potassium (9.87 and 9.81 mg/L) in the two studied seasons when foliarly sprayed with the combination of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha compared to the Gemaiza-11 cultivar. It can be concluded that Misr-1 exhibited higher levels of total chlorophyll content, spike length, 100-grain weight, grain yield in kg/ha, and nitrogen and potassium. However, Gemaiza-11 displayed higher biomass and straw yield values, plant height, and sodium concentration values. It could be economically recommended to use the application of 120 kg Mn-N/ha + 14 L Nan-N/ha on the Misr-1 cultivar to achieve the highest crop yield.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates are associated with various diseases ranged from mild superficial impairments to invasive infections. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based methods namely, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the coa gene and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), to determine the genetic diversity of MRSA isolates. Materials and Methods: A total of 37 MRSA isolates were conventionally identified depending on their biochemical and microbiological culture characteristics. Genotypic confirmation was based on detection of the associated mecA gene. The genetic variation amongst MRSA isolates was evaluated following the coa gene-based RFLP and RAPD fingerprints. Results: Results illustrated that, the species specific coa gene was detected in all MRSA isolates. The irregular bands intensity, number, and molecular sizes of the PCR amplicons demonstrated the coa gene polymorphism. The incompatible AluI digestion patterns of these amplicons classified the tested MRSA isolates into 20 RFLP patterns which confirm the coa gene polymorphism. Additionally, the PCR-based RAPD analysis showed variable bands number with size range of approximately 130 bp to 4 kbp, which indicated the genetic variation of the tested MRSA isolates as it created 36 variable RAPD banding profiles. Conclusions: coa gene AluI enzymatic restriction sites, amongst the tested MRSA isolates, certify their genetic variation on the basis of the accurate but complicated and relatively expensive coa gene-based RFLP. Conversely, the results verified the excellent ability of the simple and cost-effective PCR-based RAPD analysis to discriminate between MRSA isolates without any preface data about the genome.

RESUMO

The Myrteacae family is known as a rich source of phloroglucinols, a group of secondary metabolites with notable biological activities. Leaves of Psidium cattleianum were extracted with chloroform: methanol 8:2 to target the isolation of phloroglucinol derivatives. Isolated compounds were characterized using different spectroscopic methods: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultra-violet (UV) and mass spectrometry (MS). Two new phloroglucinols were evaluated for cytotoxicity against a panel of six human cancer cell lines, namely colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (HT-29 and HCT-116); hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG-2); laryngeal carcinoma (Hep-2); breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF7 and MDA-MB231), in addition to normal human melanocytes HFB-4. Additionally, cell cycle analysis and annexin-V/FITC-staining were used to gain insights into the mechanism of action of the isolated compounds. The new phloroglucinol meroterpenoids, designated cattleianal and cattleianone, showed selective antiproliferative action against HT-29 cells with IC50's of 35.2 and 32.1 µM, respectively. Results obtained using cell cycle analysis and annexin-V/FITC-staining implicated both necrosis and apoptosis pathways in the selective cytotoxicity of cattleianal and cattleianone. Our findings suggest that both compounds are selective antiproliferative agents and support further mechanistic studies for phloroglucinol meroterpenoids as scaffolds for developing new selective chemotherapeutic agents.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The heterogenous nature of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) motivated this attempt at developing and validating a model based on combined biomarkers for improving early HCC detection. PATIENTS/MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined 196 patients for an estimation study (104 patients with HCC, 52 with liver cirrhosis and 40 with liver fibrosis) and 122 patients for the validation study (80 patients with HCC, 42 with liver cirrhosis). All patients were positive for hepatitis C virus. Four markers were measured: Midkine and thioredoxin using ELISA, 1-methyladenosine and 1-methylguanosine using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results were compared with alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). The performance of the model was estimated in BCLC, CLIP and Okuda staging systems of HCC. RESULTS: The model yielded high performance with an area under ROC (AUC) of 0.94 for predicting HCC in patients with liver cirrhosis, compared with AUC of 0.69 for AFP. This model had AUCs of 0.93, 0.94 and 0.94 in patients who had only one single nodule, absent macrovascular invasion and tumor size <2cm, respectively, compared with AUCs of 0.71, 0.6 and 0.59 for AFP. The model produced AUCs of 0.91 for BCLC (0-A), 0.92 for CLIP (0-1) and 0.94 for Okuda (stage I) compared with AUCs of 0.56, 0.58 and 0.64 for AFP. No significant difference was found between AUC in the estimation and the validation groups. CONCLUSION: This model may enhance early-stage HCC detection and help to overcome insufficient sensitivity of AFP.

RESUMO

Screen-printed membrane sensors based on the use of paper and ceramic substrates are fabricated, characterized, and used for rapid batch and continuous monitoring of CrIII in the form of CrO42- in some industrial products and wastewater samples. Strips of paper and ceramic platforms (15 × 5 mm) were covered with conductive carbon paint and then modified with polyaniline (PANI) film, to act as an ion-to-electron transducer, followed by a drop casting of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) Rhodamine-B chromate membrane as a recognition sensing material. In a 5.0 mmol L-1 Trizma buffer solution of pH ~8, the fabricated paper and ceramic based membrane sensors exhibited a near Nernstian response for CrVI ion with slopes of -29.7 ± 0.5 and -28.6 ± 0.3 mV decade-1, limit of detection 2.5 × 10-5 and 2.4 × 10-6 mol L-1 (1.3-0.12 µg mL-1), and linear concentration range 7.5 × 10-3-5.0 × 10-5 and 7.5 × 10-3-1.0 × 10-5 mol L-1 (390-0.5 µg mL-1), respectively. Both sensors exhibited fast and stable potentiometric response, excellent reproducibility, and good selectivity with respect to a number of common foreign inorganic species. Impedance spectroscopy and chronopotentiometry data revealed a small resistance and a larger double layer capacitance due to the presence of the intermediate polyaniline (PAN) conductive layer. Furthermore, the formation of a water layer between the ion selective membrane (ISM) and the underlying conductor polymer and between the conducting polymer and the carbon conducting surface was greatly reduced. The developed disposable solid-contact potentiometric sensors offer the advantages of simple design, long term potential stability, flexibility, miniaturization ability, short conditioning time, and cost effectiveness that enable mass production. The sensors were successfully used for static and hydrodynamic measurements of total chromium in some leather tanning wastewater and nickel-chrome alloy samples. The results compare favorably with data obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry.

RESUMO

Orciprenaline sulphate (ORP) is a direct-acting sympathomimetic with mainly beta-adrenoceptor stimulant activity. It is used as a bronchodilator in the management of reversible airway obstruction. For the first time, a rapid highly sensitive spectrofluorimetric method is described that is relied on measuring the fluorescence spectra of ORP at acidic pH and without addition of any chemical reagents. The relative fluorescence intensity was measured at 310 nm and after excitation at 224 nm. ORP native fluorescence was calibrated in both water and acetonitrile as diluting solvents. The method was designed to estimate the drug in miscellaneous matrices with high accuracy and precision. Linear ranges of calibration curves were 30.0-400.0 ng/ml and 10.0-240.0 ng/ml in water and acetonitrile, respectively. The detection limits were calculated and reached as low as 3.3 and 3.1 ng/ml, respectively, representing the ultra-sensitivity of the proposed method. This result permitted application of this method for spiked human plasma and urine and was used as a preliminary investigation with good percentage recovery (89.4-106.8%). The application was further extended to analyse ORP in its pharmaceutical formulations. The method was validated in compliance with International Council of Harmonization (ICH) Guidelines.

RESUMO

Alfuzosin and tamsulosin are recently co-administrated with vardenafil to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia and erectile dysfunction. A highly sensitive and simple liquid chromatographic method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of the three drugs using moxifloxacin as an internal standard. Isocratic separation was achieved within 7.0 min using phenyl-hexyl column (250 × 4.6 mm i.d.) and a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile/0.25% phosphoric acid (30:70, v/v) at pH 3.0. The analysis was performed at a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min with fluorescence detection at 246/450 nm for Alfuzosin and vardenafil, and 226/322nm for tamsulosin using time programming technique. The proposed method was linear over the concentration ranges of 5.0-50.0ng/mL, 10.0-200.0ng/mL and 20.0-400.0ng/mL for alfuzosin, vardenafil and tamsulosin, with limits of detection of 0.56ng/mL, 0.98ng/mL and 2.81 ng/mL in a respective order. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the studied drugs in dosage forms and human plasma samples and the results were satisfactory as revealed by statistical analysis of the data.

RESUMO

Background Childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a lifelong autoimmune disorder. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene is a potential candidate gene for cSLE susceptibility. In this study, we aimed to investigate the FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene in Egyptian children and adolescents with SLE, to determine whether this polymorphism could be a genetic marker for cSLE susceptibility or disease activity and we also measured the serum level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH) D] to assess its relation to such polymorphism. Methods This was a case-control study, which included 300 patients with cSLE and 300 age, sex, and ethnicity-matched healthy controls. All participants were genotyped for the VDR gene FokI (rs2228570) polymorphism by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP), while the serum [25(OH) D] levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results The VDR FokI FF genotype and F allele were overrepresented among cSLE patients compared with the controls, [odds ratio (OR) = 2.7; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.6-4.4 for the FF genotype; p = 0.000; and OR = 1.6; 95% CI: 1.27-2.05 for the F allele; p = 0.000, respectively]. We found a significant association between VDR FokI FF genotype with lupus nephritis (OR: 4.8; 95% CI: 2.2-10.6; p = 0.002); and high disease activity index score ( p = 0.01). Conclusions The FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene may contribute to susceptibility to SLE in Egyptian children and adolescents. Moreover, the FF genotype constituted a risk factor for the development of lupus nephritis and was associated with low serum [25(OH) D] levels as well as higher disease activity index score among studied patients with cSLE.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Integrons are gene acquisition systems commonly found in bacterial genomes that play a major role in the dissemination of resistance to antibiotics. This work aimed to study the relationship between the presence of integrons and the reduced susceptibility of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates towards different groups of biocides. METHODS: The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of 104 clinical isolates were determined against different antibiotics by the disk diffusion method. The isolates were also tested for their susceptibility to six biocides (glutaraldehyde, benzalkonium chloride, cetrimide, chlorhexidine gluconate, chlorocresol and gluconate, and phenyl mercuric nitrate) by agar dilution. The presence of integrons and resistance genes in MDR isolates were detected by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Thirty-six Pseudomonas isolates were MDR, and the majority of these isolates showed reduced susceptibility to biocides. In the MDR isolates, Class I integron was detected in 22 isolates (61.1%), while Class II and III integrons were identified in only four isolates (11.1%), In addition, aacA4 and qacE genes were detected in 22 (61.1%) and 11 (30.5%) isolates, respectively. Integron I-positive isolates showed reduced susceptibility to tested biocides. CONCLUSIONS: The current study reveals the presence of different classes of integrons, with class I being predominant. Class I integron may be responsible for generating MDR P. aeruginosa isolates with reduced susceptibility to biocides. This linkage between integrons and biocide resistance in MDR-Pseudomonas isolates is notable and could be clinically important. Strict antibiotic prescription policies and the adequate use of biocides could help in controlling this problem.

RESUMO

In the current study, we enrolled 14 Egyptian infertile males with isolated congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). Screening for the most commonly reported 36 CFTR mutations, and the intron 8 (T)n splice variant was performed by multiplex PCR followed by reversed hybridisation. Samples with the 5T variant were picked for DNA sequencing of intron 8/exon 9 region to identify the number of adjacent TG repeats. The p.Phe508del and the p.Ser1251Asn mutations were detected in heterozygous state in three patients (10.7% of alleles) and in one patient (3.6% of alleles), respectively, while the 5T variant was detected in five patients (28.6% of alleles). Among those five patients, four had TG12 repeats and one had TG13 repeats confirming the pathogenic penetrance of all 5T alleles in Egyptian CBAVD patients. The allelic frequencies of the mutations p.Phe508del, p.Ser1251Asn and the 5T variant in 60 Egyptian cystic fibrosis patients were 24.2%, 3.3% and 2.5% respectively. The mutation p.Ser1251Asn was detected for the first time in isolated CBAVD patient in our study. Due to the high prevalence of p.Phe508del mutation and 5T variant in Egyptian CBAVD patients, we recommend their screening initially, ideally followed by full CFTR gene sequencing in unidentified patients.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) and develop a predictive score to improve the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). AGP and CRP were measured in serum of 53 HCC patients and 20 liver cirrhosis (LC) patients, in addition to 15 healthy individuals. Area under receiver-operating characteristic curves (AUCs) was used to create a predictive score comprising AGP, CRP, alpha fetoprotein, and albumin. The diagnostic performances of score was determined and compared with AFP alone for the diagnosis of HCC. The combination of AGP, albumin, CRP, and AFP had AUC 0.92 and sensitivity 85% which was higher than AFP alone. The odds ratio of having HCC was 8.4 for AGP, 5.8 for CRP, 12.5 for AFP and 6.5 for albumin. Our score predicted HCC with an OR of 50.6 for HCC. The AUC of score in HCC with single tumor, absent vascular invasion and CLIP score (0-1) were 0.9, 0.9, 0.82, respectively, compared with 0.71, 0.71, 0.68, respectively, for AFP. In conclusion, a non-invasive and simple score based on AGP, CRP, AFP, and albumin could improve the accuracy of HCC diagnosis.

A novel amorphous carbon thin film (ACTF) was prepared by hydrolyzing wood sawdust and delignificating the residue to obtain cellulose mass that was subjected to react with cobalt silicate nanoparticle as a catalyst under the influence of sudden concentrated sulfuric acid addition at 23 °C. The novel ACTF was obtained in the form of thin films like graphene sheets having winding surface. The prepared ACTF was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The adsorption capacity of ACTF to remove oil from synthetic produced water was evaluated using the incorporation of Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. The performance study is described through the breakthrough curves concept under relevant operating conditions such as column bed heights (3.8, 5 and 11 mm) and flow rate (0.5, 1 and 1.5 mL.min(-1)). It was found that the oil uptake mechanism is favoring higher bed height. Also, the highest bed capacity of 700 mg oil/g ACTF was achieved at 5 mm bed height, and 0.5 mL.min(-1) flow rate. The results of breakthrough curve for oil adsorption was best described using the Yoon-Nelson model. Finally, the results illustrate that ACTF could be utilized effectively for oil removal from synthetic produced water in a fixed-bed column system.

RESUMO

A novel, economical flash heat treatment of the fabricated silicon based electrodes is introduced to boost the performance and cycle capability of Li-ion batteries. The treatment reveals a high mass fraction of Si, improved interfacial contact, synergistic SiO2/C coating, and a conductive cellular network for improved conductivity, as well as flexibility for stress compensation. The enhanced electrodes achieve a first cycle efficiency of ∼84% and a maximum charge capacity of 3525 mA h g(-1), almost 84% of silicon's theoretical maximum. Further, a stable reversible charge capacity of 1150 mA h g(-1) at 1.2 A g(-1) can be achieved over 500 cycles. Thus, the flash heat treatment method introduces a promising avenue for the production of industrially viable, next-generation Li-ion batteries.

RESUMO

A highly sensitive, simple and rapid stability-indicating spectrofluorimetric method was developed for the determination of metolazone (MET) and xipamide (XPM) in their tablets. The proposed method is based on the measurement of the native fluorescence of MET in methanol at 437 nm after excitation at 238 nm and XPM in alkaline methanolic solution at 400 nm after excitation at 255 nm. The fluorescence-concentration plots were rectilinear over the range of 2.0- 20.0 ng/mL for MET and 0.2- 2.0 µg/mL for XPM, with lower detection limits (LOD) of 0.35 ng/mL and 0.02 µg/mL and a lower quantification limit (LOQ) of 1.05 ng/mL and 0.07 µg/mL for MET and XPM, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of MET and XPM in their commercial tablets and the results were in good agreement with those obtained using the official and comparison methods, respectively. Furthermore, content uniformity testing of the studied pharmaceutical tablets was also conducted. The application of the proposed method was extended to stability studies of MET and XPM after exposure to different forced degradation conditions, such as acidic, alkaline, oxidative and photolytic degradation conditions, according to ICH Guidelines. Moreover, the method was utilized to investigate the kinetics of the alkaline, acidic and photolytic degradation of MET. The apparent first-order rate constants and half-life times were calculated. Proposals for the degradation pathways for both MET and XPM were postulated.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Eucalyptus cinerea F. Muell. ex Benth. (Myrtaceae) is a medium-sized tree cultivated in Egypt. OBJECTIVE: First, to determine the chemical composition of the volatile oil of the juvenile leaves and stems of E. cinerea to identify its chemotype. Second, to study the in vivo antioxidant activity and in vitro antimicrobial activity of the studied volatile oils against selected Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and mycelia fungi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The volatile oil was prepared by hydrodistillation and then identified by GC/MS analysis. Broth microdilution and agar dilution methods were applied for determining the MIC. The antioxidant activity was studied by determination of glutathione level in blood of alloxan-induced diabetic rats. RESULTS: The yield of the volatile oil hydrodistilled from the juvenile leaves and stems of E. cinerea was 4.5 and 0.5%, respectively. 1,8-Cineole was the major identified oxygenated monoterpenoid (84.55% and 60.15% in the juvenile leaves and stems, respectively). The antibacterial activity of the oil of the juvenile leaves was more potent against all the tested organisms than that of the stems. The (MIC) of volatile oil of the juvenile leaves against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus faecalis, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus flavus were 5.2, 5.6, 4, 4.8, and 12.8 µg/ml, respectively. Also, the juvenile leaves' oil was more active as an antioxidant than that of the stems. They restored glutathione level by 33.7 ± 1.1 and 29.6 ± 0.7 mg/dl, respectively, compared with vitamin E (35.9 ± 1.2 mg/dl) which was used as a reference. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: RESULTS suggest that the volatile oil is 1,8-cineole chemotype. Moreover, the oil of the juvenile leaves of E. cinerea might find usefulness as a therapeutic agent following further development.

RESUMO

A sensitive, rapid and green synchronous spectrofluorimetric method was developed to simultaneously analyze a binary mixture of diosmin (DSM) and hesperidin (HSP). The RSFI of both medications was measured in methanol at Δλ of 100 nm. The results indicated that specific experimental factors had an impact on these intensities. The optimization and thorough examination of these parameters were conducted. The plots of synchronous fluorescence intensity-concentration for DSM and HSP were found to be linear within the concentration ranges of 0.5-5.0 µg ml-1 and 0.2-3.0 µg ml-1, respectively. The detection limits for DSM and HSP were 0.107 µg ml-1 and 0.048 µg ml-1, respectively. The limits of quantification were 0.323 µg ml-1 and 0.144 µg ml-1 for DSM and HSP, respectively. The method outlined in this study was successfully used to determine the quantities of both drugs present in commercially available mixed tablets. The results obtained using this method were subsequently compared to those of a comparison method. Greenness assessment of the suggested procedure was accomplished by applying the GAPI method. Consequently, the recommended method can be used in the routine quality control analysis of the two cited drugs with minimum harmful effect on the environment as well as the individuals.

RESUMO

For first time, new innovative ruthenium N3-Dye anchored with selenium (Se) and N3 dye anchored with sulphur atoms were synthesized in a good yield. Dyes are applied and evaluated in performance of dye sensitized solar cell. N3-Se dye showed superior photochemical& electrochemical behavior and high rate electron transfer across anode surface than N3-S dye. The better optical and electrochemical activities would make Se-dye a candidate for applications in solar cells. Half life time of N3-S showed a single exponential decay with an average lifetime of 0.8 ns. For N3-Se dye, decay curve was fitted by sum two exponential functions with 75% and 25% counts have 2.5 ns and 30 ns respectively. Solar cells were fabricated and analyzed to determine their solar-to-electric conversion efficiency under standard AM 1.5 sunlight. Commercial N3 dyes showed current density (Jsc) of 17.813 mA cm-2, open circuit potential (Voc) of 0.678 V, filling factor (FF) of 0.607 and conversion efficiencies (η) of 7.3%. Corresponding values for N3-S dye, Jsc 11.2 mA cm-2, Voc 0.650 V, FF 0.681 and η 5%. Se-N3 dye, showed Jsc = 6.670 mA cm-2, Voc = 0.6004 V, FF = 0.77 and η = 3.09%. Long lifetime of N3-Se caused low practical performance.
