RESUMO

In support of the general practitioners and paediatricians of both the private and public sectors, a team of three nurses specialised in Travel Health Medicine offers first line consultations to families about to travel. The team updates basic vaccinations and determines the vaccinations specific to each destination, particularly the yellow fever vaccine, following the recommendations of the Swiss Group of Travel Health Medicine and the Federal Office of Public Health. The nurses inform and prescribe the adequate medication against malaria for parents and children. The consultation is also a place for counselling, where parents can ask questions about various subjects related to their travel. Tact, receptiveness, and reassurance are essential assets of the nurses, allowing for an efficient and useful consultation for the travellers.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the benefit of the Holladay 2 formula versus the 3rd generation formulae in calculating the IOL power in eyes with non-standard axial length or keratometry before cataract surgery. PATIENTS: Retrospectiv study from January to December 2015. The inclusion critaeria were axial length (AL) <22mm or >26mm, or average keratometry <42 D or >46 D, dividing the patients in 4 groups respectively. The 7 parameters required to calculate the Holladay 2 formula were collected. The final refractive result was turned into spherical equivalent to calculate the optimal power retrospectively. Then, the results obtained using the other formulae were compared with the optimal IOL power. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-six eyes operated by two surgeons were included. In the high AL group (n=32), the SRK/T was the most accurate formula; regarding the low AL group (n=36), the Hoffer Q and Holladay 2 formulae performed better; for the steep cornea group (n=27), the Hoffer Q, Haigis, Holladay 1 and 2 formulae were not different; last, the Holladay 1 and 2 were more accurate in the flat cornea group (n=33). CONCLUSION: In our study, the Holladay 2 formula does not seem to be better than the others for calculating IOL power in non-standard eyes. Preoperative eye features in such non-standard cases should be taken into account before the surgery to choose the more suitable formula.

RESUMO

Amplifier noise induces fluctuations on the soliton's mean frequency and amplitude. These fluctuations disturb the soliton phase difference, which modifies the soliton interaction. Amplifier noise jitter and soliton interaction cannot be studied independently for strongly interacting solitons in high-repetition-rate long-distance transmissions. A first-order analytical modeling for the jitter of two interacting solitons with periodic amplification is presented.

RESUMO

We use perturbation theory to calculate the Gordon-Haus timing jitter in soliton communication systems with sliding filters. We analyze the effects of soliton parameter changes with distance that are due to the chromatic dispersion variation resulting from frequency sliding. We show that the timing-jitter control efficiency is nearly independent of the frequency-sliding sign, provided the frequency range is the same for both signs.

RESUMO

The authors report the different types of mutilating surgery: evisceration, enucleation and exenteration, realized at Reims C.H.R., between 1983 and 1988. The authors specify the causes leaded on the anatomical waste of the eye ball.

RESUMO

A study about 44 retinal detachments showed 44 cases of retinal detachment due to desinsertions at the ora serrata, including all etiologies. We found that most of the cases were young people (80% before 40 years old), and male and functional results were relatively poor (60%). In "idiopathic" cases and due to the ocular contusions, the rates of good anatomic results were respectively 86% and 95%, and visual acuity was improved in 70% and 81% of the eyes.

RESUMO

Fatigue has become an important symptom in research and also for clinical diagnosis and follow up. Many physical illnesses, in particular chronic ones such as cancer, are highly associated with fatigue. Various questionnaires for measuring fatigue have been developed, but currently no validated questionnaire exists in French language. We selected the 'Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory' (MFI) which has been validated in its English version and then translated into French by the designers. This study describes the validation step of the French version of MFI and presents the psychometric properties of this instrument. A sample of 225 patients was divided into three groups 'Tired' (82 subjects), 'Moderately tired' (36) and 'Not tired' (107). The analysis of the structure validity found four dimensions: 'General Fatigue', 'Mental Fatigue', 'Reduced Activities' and 'Motivation'. The convergent validity showed highly significant correlation (P < 0.001) with a visual analogue scale. The French MFI has been able to distinguish patients with different fatigue levels. Cronbach's alpha measurement of the scale and the subscales are good, cronbach alpha > 0.70. The reproducibility and sensitivity to change in patients who were followed up one month later show satisfactory results. This validation study of the French version of MFI shows that this instrument is valid for clinical application and allows different dimensions of fatigue to be assessed which is of particular interest for physicians, especially for cancer carers, where fatigue assessment is an important aspect of the follow up.

RESUMO

The authors report 3 cases of uveal melanoma, appeared on young women: 20, 23 and 28 years old. The melanomas were localized on the iris, the ciliary body and on the choroid. The authors studied the different notions of the literature about happened age of these lesions.
