Diabetes is linked to male infertility, but the mechanisms and therapeutic options remain unclear. This study investigates the effects of semaglutide on testicular function in a diabetes mouse model. Clinical data shows that diabetes affects blood glucose, lipid levels, and sperm quality. Single-cell and transcriptome analyses reveal changes in testicular tissue cell proportions and activation of ferroptosis pathways in diabetic patients/rats. In the diabetes mouse model, sperm quality decreases significantly. Treatment with semaglutide (Sem) and the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) alleviates testicular damage, as evidenced by improved lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis markers. Moreover, the diabetes-induced decrease in the TM-3 cell line's vitality, increased lipid peroxidation, ROS, ferrous ions, and mitochondrial membrane potential damage are all improved by semaglutide and ferrostatin-1 intervention. Overall, these findings highlight semaglutide's potential as a therapeutic approach for mitigating diabetes-induced testicular damage through modulation of the ferroptosis pathway.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer mortality. HCC has high morbidity, high mortality, and low survival rates. Screening is one of the most significant methods of lowering incidence and death while also increasing survival. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the facilitators and barriers to participation in HCC screening among high-risk populations. METHODS: A comprehensive and systematic search was undertaken in PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, EMBACE, EBSCOhost and the Cochrane Library. A combination of synonyms of the keywords including HCC, screening, factors and adherence were used for searching. Studies addressing the facilitators and barriers to HCC screening compliance in at-risk individuals were included. Data were synthesized using Review Manager version 5.4. A random/fixed effects model meta-analysis was performed to estimate the pooled data and expressed with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: A total of seven articles met the inclusion criteria. Qualitative (n = 1) and quantitative (n = 6) studies using various types of surgery were conducted. The most commonly mentioned barriers were insufficient knowledge and awareness of HCC screening, unawareness of the necessity for early detection of HCC and lack of physician recommendation. A meta-analysis of seven studies showed that individuals with a family history of HCC increased screening uptake by nearly three times (OR: 2.69, 95% CI: 1.93, 3.75). Other most frequently reported facilitators include age, education level, and perceived risk et al. CONCLUSIONS: Many barriers to HCC screening were found. Meanwhile, this review points out that improving the awareness of high-risk populations toward HCC screening is expected to enhance compliance, thereby promoting early diagnosis of liver cancer, reducing mortality, and alleviating the burden of HCC.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to conduct a comparative evaluation of different designs of clear aligners and examine the disparities between clear aligners and fixed appliances. METHODS: 3D digital models were created, consisting of a maxillary dentition without first premolars, maxilla, periodontal ligaments, attachments, micro-implant, 3D printed lingual retractor, brackets, archwire and clear aligner. The study involved the creation of five design models for clear aligner maxillary anterior internal retraction and one design model for fixed appliance maxillary anterior internal retraction, which were subsequently subjected to finite element analysis. These design models included: (1) Model C0 Control, (2) Model C1 Posterior Micro-implant, (3) Model C2 Anterior Micro-implant, (4) Model C3 Palatal Plate, (5) Model C4 Lingual Retractor, and (6) Model F0 Fixed Appliance. RESULTS: In the clear aligner models, a consistent pattern of tooth movement was observed. Notably, among all tested models, the modified clear aligner Model C3 exhibited the smallest differences in sagittal displacement of the crown-root of the central incisor, vertical displacement of the central incisor, sagittal displacement of the second premolar and second molar, as well as vertical displacement of posterior teeth. However, distinct variations in tooth movement trends were observed between the clear aligner models and the fixed appliance model. Furthermore, compared to the fixed appliance model, significant increases in tooth displacement were achieved with the use of clear aligner models. CONCLUSIONS: In the clear aligner models, the movement trend of the teeth remained consistent, but there were variations in the amount of tooth displacement. Overall, the Model C3 exhibited better torque control and provided greater protection for posterior anchorage teeth compared to the other four clear aligner models. On the other hand, the fixed appliance model provides superior anterior torque control and better protection of the posterior anchorage teeth compared to clear aligner models. The clear aligner approach and the fixed appliance approach still exhibit a disparity; nevertheless, this study offers a developmental direction and establishes a theoretical foundation for future non-invasive, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and efficient modalities of clear aligner treatment.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid is the most popular dermal filler in the treatment of nasolabial folds. Injection methods vary among physicians. METHODS: A randomized, two-center, double-blind, intraindividual trial was designed to compare a new method of injecting ART FILLER® UNIVERSAL using the retaining ligament with the traditional method (linear threading and bolus injection) in moderate to severe nasolabial folds. Forty patients with moderate to severe nasolabial folds were randomized into groups A and B. Group A received injections via the traditional method on the left side and the ligament method on the right side, while group B received the reverse. Clinical efficacy and patient safety were independently assessed by a blinded evaluator, the injector, using the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS), the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), and the Medicis Midface Volume Scale (MMVS) at 4 weeks (before and after the touch-up injection), 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after the baseline injection. RESULTS: From the perspective of the blinded evaluator, the improvements in WSRS scores from baseline did not differ significantly between the ligament method (0.73 ± 0.61) and the traditional method (0.89 ± 0.61) at week 24 (p > 0.05). The mean GAIS score at week 24 was 1.41 ± 0.49 for the traditional method and 1.32 ± 0.47 for the ligament method (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy and safety of the ligament method for the management of nasolabial folds are comparable to those of the traditional method in terms of WSRS and GAIS score improvement in the long run. The ligament method is superior to the traditional method in that it improves midface deficits with fewer adverse events. Revealing the effect of external applied potential on the reaction mechanism and product selectivity is of great significance in electrochemical studies. In this work, the grand canonical density functional theory method was applied to simulate the explicit electrocatalytic process of oxygen evolution reaction and electrochemical ozone production due to the O3 product sensitivity toward the applied potential. Over the Pt/Pd single atom embedded on B/N co-doped graphene (Pt/Pd-BNC) surface, crossover points of O2/O3 selectivity inversion were predicted to be 1.33 and 0.89 V vs standard hydrogen electrode, which were also consistent with the previous experimental results. An in-depth analysis of the energetic terms in the reaction free energies also found the considerable impact of the applied potential on the Helmholtz free energy term, with optimal potential predicted for the key elementary steps, and linear correlations between electrode potential (U) and reaction free energy were found for each elementary step. This study offers extensive knowledge on the potential effect on the O2/O3 selective formation on two-dimensional anode surfaces and provides new insights for investigating the reactivity/selectivity on electrode surfaces in real reaction conditions.

Bile salts are a category of natural chiral surfactants which have ever been used as the surfactant and chiral selector for the separation of many chiral compounds by micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC). In our previous works, the application of sodium cholate (SC) in the separation of four stereoisomers of palonosetron (PALO) by MEKC has been studied systematically. In this work, the parameters of other bile salts, including sodium taurocholate (STC), sodium deoxycholate (SDC), and sodium taurodeoxycholate (STDC) in the separation of PALO stereoisomers by MEKC were measured and compared with SC. It was found that all of four bile salts provide chiral recognition for both pairs of enantiomers, as well as achiral selectivity for diastereomers of different degrees. The structure of steroidal ring of bile salts has a greater impact on the separation than the structure of the side chain. The varying separation results by different bile salts were elucidated based on the measured parameters. A model to describe the contributions of the mobility difference of solutes in the aqueous phase and the selectivity of micelles to the chiral and achiral separation of stereoisomers was introduced. Additionally, a new approach to measure the mobility of micelles without enough solubility for hydrophobic markers was proposed, which is necessary for the calculation of separation parameters in MEKC. Under the guidance of derived equations, the separation by SDC and STDC was significantly improved by using lower surfactant concentrations. The complete separation of four stereoisomers was achieved in less than 3.5 min by using 4.0 mM of SDC. In addition, 30.0 mM of STC also provided the complete resolution of four stereoisomers due to the balance of different separation mechanisms. Its applicability for the analysis of a small amount of enantiomeric impurities in the presence of a high concentration of the effective ingredient was validated by a real sample.

Deep learning is the fastest growing field in artificial intelligence and has led to many transformative innovations in various domains. However, lack of interpretability sometimes hinders its application in hypothesis-driven domains such as biology and healthcare. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning model with individual feature ranking. Several simulated datasets with the scenarios that contributing features are correlated and buried among non-contributing features were used to characterize the novel analysis approach. A publicly available clinical dataset was also applied. The performance of the individual level dropout feature ranking model was compared with commonly used artificial neural network model, random forest model, and population level dropout feature ranking model. The individual level dropout feature ranking model provides a reasonable prediction of the outcomes. Unlike the random forest model and population level dropout feature ranking model, which can only identify global-wise contributing features (i.e., at population level), the individual level dropout feature ranking model allows further identification of impactful features on response at individual level. Therefore, it provides a basis for clustering patients into subgroups. This may provide a new tool for enriching patients in clinical drug development and developing personalized or individualized medicine.

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease involving periodontal tissues. Periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) play an important role in the regeneration of periodontal tissue. However, senescent PDLCs have an impeded regenerative potential. Metformin has been reported to prevent senescence at both the cellular and individual levels. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of metformin on cellular senescence in human PDLCs (hPDLCs) under oxidative stress. hPDLCs were pretreated with metformin, followed by H2O2 exposure. The cell viability, oxidative damage, cellular senescence and osteogenic potential were detected. To inhibit autophagy, hPDLCs were treated with 3-methyladenine before metformin treatment. The present study revealed that H2O2 exposure inhibits proliferation, increased lysosomal ß-galactosidase activity, augments reactive oxidative species (ROS) accumulation, elevates the oxidative damage, stimulates the expression of senescence-related genes and impedes the activity of the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLCs. Metformin pretreatment could partly reverse the detrimental influences of H2O2 on hPDLCs. Moreover, metformin could stimulate autophagy, whereas the inhibition of autophagy with 3-methyladenine reversed the anti-senescence effects of metformin on hPDLCs under oxidative stress. The present study manifested that metformin could alleviate oxidative stress-induced senescence via stimulating autophagy and could partially recover the osteogenic potential of hPDLCs, possibly providing a reference for the discovery of periodontal treatment from the perspective of antisenescence.

Various derivative technologies based on PCR for nucleic acid detection have emerged with the continuous development and the diverse needs of molecular biology technology. Digital PCR (dPCR) is a nucleic acid detection method for large scale amplification based on a single molecular template, which runs an individual PCR reaction using chambers/wells or droplets. dPCR can be used for absolute quantification for the initial concentration of samples without calibrator and drawing standard curve, showing the characteristics of high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. In this review, we introduce the history of technology development, principle, and instrument platform types of digital PCR in detail. Then, we summarize the application of this technology in GMO quantification, disease diagnosis, environment and food supervision. Finally, we describe the application prospect of dPCR, providing a reference for the development and utilization of this technology in the future.

Sleep is highly conserved across animal species. Both wake- and sleep-promoting neurons are implicated in the regulation of wake-sleep transition at dusk in Drosophila However, little is known about how they cooperate and whether they act via different mechanisms. Here, we demonstrated that in female Drosophila, sleep onset was specifically delayed by blocking the Shaker cognate L channels [Shal; also known as voltage-gated K+ channel 4 (Kv4)] in wake-promoting cells, including large ventral lateral neurons (l-LNvs) and pars intercerebralis (PI), but not in sleep-promoting dorsal neurons (DN1s). Delayed sleep onset was also observed in males by blocking Kv4 activity in wake-promoting neurons. Electrophysiological recordings show that Kv4 channels contribute A-type currents in LNvs and PI cells, but are much less conspicuous in DN1s. Interestingly, blocking Kv4 in wake-promoting neurons preferentially increased firing rates at dusk ∼ZT13, when the resting membrane potentials and firing rates were at lower levels. Furthermore, pigment-dispersing factor (PDF) is essential for the regulation of sleep onset by Kv4 in l-LNvs, and downregulation of PDF receptor (PDFR) in PI neurons advanced sleep onset, indicating Kv4 controls sleep onset via regulating PDF/PDFR signaling in wake-promoting neurons. We propose that Kv4 acts as a sleep onset controller by suppressing membrane excitability in a clock-dependent manner to balance the wake-sleep transition at dusk. Our results have important implications for the understanding and treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT The mechanisms by which our brains reversibly switch from waking to sleep state remain an unanswered and intriguing question in biological research. In this study, we identified that Shal/Kv4, a well known voltage-gated K+ channel, acts as a controller of wake-sleep transition at dusk in Drosophila circadian neurons. We find that interference of Kv4 function with a dominant-negative form (DNKv4) in subsets of circadian neurons specifically disrupts sleep onset at dusk, although Kv4 itself does not exhibit circadian oscillation. Kv4 preferentially downregulates neuronal firings at ZT9-ZT17, supporting that it plays an essential role in wake-sleep transition at dusk. Our findings may help understand and eventually treat sleep disorders such as insomnia.

This study aims to determine the feasibility of using oligodeoxynucleotides with unmethylated cytosine-guanine dinucleotide sequences (CpG ODN) as an immunity protection strategy for a mouse model of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This is a prospective laboratory animal investigation. Twenty-week-old BALB/c mice in Animal research laboratory were randomized into groups. An ARDS model was induced in mice using lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). CpG ODN was intranasally and transrectally immunized before or after the 3rd and 7th days of establishing the ARDS model. Mice were euthanized on Day 7 after the second immunization. Then, retroorbital bleeding was carried out and the chest was rapidly opened to collect the trachea and tissues from both lungs for testing. CpG ODN significantly improved the pathologic impairment in mice lung, especially after the intranasal administration of 50 µg. This resulted in the least severe lung tissue injury. Furthermore, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-8 concentrations were lower, which was second to mice treated with the rectal administration of 20 µg CpG ODN. In contrast, the nasal and rectal administration of CpG ODN in BALB/c mice before LPS immunization did not appear to exhibit any significant protective effects. The intranasal administration of CpG ODN may be a potential treatment approach to ARDS. More studies are needed to further determine the protective mechanism of CpG ODN.

BACKGROUND: The association between interleukin-10 (IL-10)-1082 (-1087) A > G polymorphism and either chronic (CP) or aggressive periodontitis (AgP) susceptibility was conflicting. This meta-analysis aimed to quantitatively estimate the association. METHODS: Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, and WANFAN databases were searched for relevant studies that were submitted prior to January 31, 2018, and meta-analyses were performed using STATA 14.0. RESULTS: Database mining yielded 26 studies of interest. For the IL-10-1082 (-1087) A > G (rs1800896) polymorphism and its relation to CP susceptibility, the overall analysis showed no significant estimates, but subgroup analysis revealed significant associations in the AA versus GG + GA model in the Caucasian population (odds ratio [OR] = 1.274, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.069-1.518, P = 0.007; I2  = 0.0%, P = 0.483) and in the GG versus AA + AG model in the Han population (OR = 6.66, 95% CI = 7.72-9.41, P = 0.000; I2  = 0.0%, P = 0.82), which all showed no obvious publication bias by Egger's linear regression test. For the association between an IL-10-1082 (-1087) A > G polymorphism and AgP susceptibility, the overall analysis and Caucasian subgroup analysis yielded nonsignificant estimates. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis indicated that the IL-10-1082 (-1087) AA genotype in the Caucasian population, and the GG genotype in the Han population might be putative risk factors for CP. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The IL-10-1082 (-1087) AA genotype and the GG genotype might be potential biomarkers for Caucasian CP and for Han CP, respectively. However, additional research will be required to validate the findings of this meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study is to examine the influence of familiarity on energy intake, eating behavior, and concentration of the plasma gut hormones in lean and overweight young male subjects. METHODS: Twenty-eight lean and twenty-eight overweight participants were recruited. Their food consumption was documented and analyzed when they had a test meal while they were paired with friends or strangers at the same weight stature. Their eating behavior was recorded with cameras hidden in the carton, and postprandial plasma gut hormone concentration were measured. RESULTS: Compared with overweight strangers (OS), overweight friends (OF) had increased food consumption, prolonged and decreased number of chews per 10 g food. Compared with OS, postprandial plasma concentration of cholecystokinin-8 was significantly lower in OF group at 30, 60, and 90 min, whereas the concentration of glucagon-like peptide 1 was significantly lower at 60 and 90 min. Plasma ghrelin concentration was significantly higher in the OF group than that in the OS group at 90 and 120 min. No significant differences in gut hormone concentration were observed between lean strangers (LS) and lean friends (LF) groups at all time points. CONCLUSION: Familiarity plays an important role in increasing energy intake and in changing of postprandial gut hormone concentration in overweight individuals.

BACKGROUND: Caries in primary teeth hinder the child to bite and chew and influence their development. Papacarie has the characteristics of selective removal of decayed tissue and can preserve healthy dentine to the maximum, but its efficiency has not been critically evaluated compared to conventional method. AIM: This review is aiming at comparing the Papacarie and traditional method in caries removal in primary dental caries with children. DESIGN: Comprehensive literature searching at PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science to January 2018. RESULTS: Six randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and four prospective controlled clinical trials (CCTs) were included. The microbiota in caries dentine was significantly reduced using the Papacarie treatment (MD = 0.57, 95% CI 0.04 to 1.09, P = 0.03), and the anxiety feeling declined more in the Papacarie group (MD = -1.01, 95% CI -1.72 to -0.30, P < 0.005). There was a greater 200.79 (MD = 200.79, 95%CI 152.50 to 249.09, P < 0.00001) increase in time taken for the Papacarie treatment compared with the conventional method. CONCLUSION: Papacarie exerts a positive effect in reducing the bacteria and decreases the pain during caries removal in primary teeth although it costed a longer treatment time compared with the conventional method.

RESUMO

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the leading cause of death among all gynecological malignancies in the world and its underlying mechanism is still unclear. Compared with research on microRNAs, research on long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is still in its infancy. Studies in recent years have demonstrated that lncRNAs exhibit multiple biological functions in various stages of OC development. In this review, we conclude that lncRNAs are closely involved in the pathogenesis of OC. The expression of lncRNAs indicates the early diagnosis, prognosis, and response to chemotherapy of OC. An attractive approach to treatment of OC is lncRNA small interfering RNA or acting as a plasmid targeting the expression of toxic genes, which is a novel step toward a major breakthrough in the treatment of human OC. E2-regulated lncRNA and its polymorphism, methylation, are also involved in OC. Further research efforts are needed before fully identifying, characterizing, and elucidating the actual functions of lncRNAs in OC at the molecular level and putting them into clinical practice.

The traditional Chinese medicine Schisandra chinensis has remarkable protective effects against chemical-induced toxicity. Cyclophosphamide (CTX), in spite advances in chemotherapy and immunosuppressive regimes, is prone to cause severe toxicity due to its chloroacetaldehyde (CAA) metabolite produced by CYP3A. Our previous study identified that S. chinensis extract (SCE) co-administration potently decreased CAA production and attenuated liver, kidney and brain injuries in CTX-treated rats. Gomisin A (Gom A) is proved to be one of the most abundant bioactive lignans in S. chinensis with a significant CYP3A inhibitory effect. To find out whether and how Gom A participated in the chemoprevention of SCE against CTX toxicity, the Gom A-caused CYP3A inhibition in vitro as well as the pharmacokinetic interactions between Gom A and CTX in vivo were examined in this study. Using human liver microsomes, a reversible inhibition assay revealed that Gom A was a competitive inhibitor with a KI value of 1.10 µM, and the time- and NADPH-dependent CYP3A inhibition of Gom A was observed in a time-dependent inhibition assay (KI = 0.35 µM, kinact = 1.96 min-1). Hepatic CYP3A mRNA expression experienced a significant increase in our rat model with Gom A administration. This explained why CAA production decreased in the 0.5 h- and 6 h-pretreatment rat groups while it increased in the 24 h- and 72 h-pretreatment groups, indicating a bidirectional effect of Gom A on CYP3A-mediated CTX metabolism. The present study suggested that Gom A participates like SCE in the pharmacokinetic intervention of CTX by blocking CYP3A-mediated metabolism and reducing CAA production, and thus plays an important role in the chemopreventive activity of S. chinensis against CTX toxicity, in addition to the previously recognized protective effects. Also, the combined use of S. chinensis preparation or other drugs containing Gom A as the main component with CTX needed to be addressed for better clinical intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate visual-field and retinal-structure changes following adjunctive vigabatrin treatment in vigabatrin-naive adults with refractory complex partial seizures (rCPS). METHODS: Prospective, longitudinal, single-arm, open-label study (NCT01278173). Eligible patients (≥2 seizures/month who failed ≥3 therapies) who could reliably perform perimetry (Humphrey automated static) and retinal-structure assessment (spectral-domain optical coherence tomography) prior to vigabatrin exposure. Following vigabatrin initiation, testing occurred within 1 month (reference) and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. End points included mean change from reference in mean deviation (dB) and average retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, visual-acuity changes from baseline, and number of patients who met predefined vision-parameter changes at two (confirmed) or three (persistent) consecutive visits. RESULTS: Sixty-five of 91 screened patients received ≥1 vigabatrin dose (all-patients-treated set [APTS]); 55 had valid reference and ≥1 post-reference assessments (full-analysis set [FAS]). Thirty-six APTS patients with valid pre-/post-reference values completed all planned visits (per-protocol set [PPS]). Thirty-eight (59%) APTS patients completed the study; 27 (42%) withdrew (none for visual-field changes); 32% and 15% had abnormally thin RNFL and abnormal visual acuity at baseline, respectively; 20% had abnormal central 30 degree visual fields in the reference period. No significant mean near visual-field changes were observed (PPS); mean change in average RNFL thickness increased significantly (1-year data: Left-eye: 6.37 µm, confidence interval (CI) 4.66-8.09; right-eye: 7.24 µm CI 5.47-9.01; PPS). No confirmed three-line decreases in visual acuity (FAS) were observed; five patients had predefined confirmed/persistent visual-field changes (FAS). All vision-related adverse events were nonserious; the most common was vision blurred (9%). SIGNIFICANCE: Prior to vigabatrin initiation, rCPS patients may already exhibit vision deficits. Up to 1 year of adjunctive vigabatrin treatment did not significantly change population near visual fields. Five patients met predefined visual-field-change criteria. RNFL thickening of unknown clinical significance was observed. Limitations include single-arm, open-label design; patients' inability to perform ophthalmic/visual-field examinations; and limited vigabatrin-exposure duration.

A filamentous actinomycete strain, designated GW9-2(T), was isolated from a soil sample collected from the Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, West Antarctica. The strain was identified using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strain grew slowly on most media tested, producing small amounts of aerial mycelia and no diffusible pigments on most media tested. The strain grew in the presence of 0-12 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2-4 %), at pH 9.0-11.0 (optimum, pH 9.0) and 10-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C). The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, no diagnostic sugars and MK-9(H4) as the predominant menaquinone. The major phospholipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylmethylethanolamine. The major fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. DNA-DNA relatedness was 37.6 % with Nocardiopsis lucentensis DSM 44048(T), the nearest phylogenetic relative (97.93 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of the results of a polyphasic study, a novel species, Nocardiopsis fildesensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is GW9-2(T) ( = CGMCC 4.7023(T) = DSM 45699(T) = NRRL B-24873(T)).

PURPOSE: This study was designed to investigate the stress and the displacement distributions of the mandible after mandibular angle ostectomy (MAO) by means of three-dimensional finite element analysis. METHODS: On the basis of a female patient with a prominent angle of the mandible, the finite element models were generated by helical computed tomography and related software and were analyzed under muscle forces and 3 kinds of biting conditions, including intercuspal position (ICP), incisal clenching (INC), and right unilateral molar clenching (RMOL). The mandibular stress and displacement distributions were analyzed by Abaqus software. RESULTS: In the model of MAO, the increased stress and the decreased displacement was found in ICP, INC, and RMOL at the area of mandibular angle. The stress and the displacement increased in ICP and RMOL, whereas the others remained unchanged in INC at the area of mandibular condylar neck. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study have shown that MAO could alter biomechanical characteristics in the operated mandible, which suggested that a greater hit on face may lead to a higher incidence rate of condyle fracture and a lower incidence rate of angle fracture after MAO.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have garnered considerable scientific and regulatory scrutiny due to their widespread distribution across environments and their potential toxicological impacts on human health. The pedosphere serves as a vital reservoir for these chemicals, significantly determining their environmental trajectory and chemical transformations. This study offers a comprehensive synthesis of the current understanding regarding the adsorption mechanics of PFASs in soil matrices. Due to their unique molecular structure, PFASs predominantly engage in hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions during soil adsorption. This work thoroughly evaluates the influence of various factors on adsorption efficiency, including soil properties, molecular characteristics of PFASs, and the prevailing environmental conditions. The complex nature of soil environments complicates isolating individual impacts on PFAS behavior, necessitating an integrated approach to understanding their environmental destinies better. Through this exploration, we seek to clarify the complex interplay of factors that modulate the adsorption of PFASs in soils, highlighting the urgent need for future research to disentangle the intricate and combined effects that control the environmental behavior of PFAS compounds.
