PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between LASIK and early cataract phacoemulsification surgery (PE). METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted. Cases were otherwise healthy adults with a history of LASIK. Groups were paired according to corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA), axial length, and cataract grade. RESULTS: A total of 213 patients were included. 85 patients were classified as post-LASIK group and 128 as controls. The mean age at the time of LASIK was 42.32 ± 9.24 years. The mean CDVA before PE was 0.29 ± 0.19 Log MAR in post-LASIK group and 0.34 ± 0.22 Log MAR in controls (p = 0.07). The mean axial length was 23.99 ± 1.78 mm in post-LASIK group and 23.62 ± 0.98 mm in controls (p = 0.085). The mean nuclear cataract grading was 1.36 in post-LASIK group and 1.47 in controls (p = 0.34). The mean age at the time of PE was 60.18 ± 7.46 years in post-LASIK group and 67.35 ± 9.28 in controls (p < 0.0005). The difference between the mean age of LASIK and the mean age of PE was 17.85 ± 5.72 years. There was a positive association between the post-LASIK group and the age of PE ≤ 55 years (OR: 4.917, 95% CI: 2.21-10.90, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: LASIK may be associated with early PE. Patients with LASIK had a 7-year earlier PE compared to a matched control group.

RESUMO

The involvement of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in tumor progression has motivated the development of biomaterials mimicking the tumor ECM to develop more predictive cancer models. Particularly, polypeptides based on elastin could be an interesting approach to mimic the ECM due to their tunable properties. Here, we demonstrated that elastin-like recombinamer (ELR) hydrogels can be suitable biomaterials to develop breast cancer models. This hydrogel was formed by two ELR polypeptides, one containing sequences biodegradable by matrix metalloproteinase and cyclooctyne and the other carrying arginylglycylaspartic acid and azide groups to allow cell adhesion, biodegradability, and suitable stiffness through "click-chemistry" cross-linking. Our findings show that breast cancer or nontumorigenic breast cells showed high viability and cell proliferation for up to 7 days. MCF7 and MCF10A formed spheroids whereas MDA-MB-231 formed cell networks, with the expression of ECM and high drug resistance in all cases, evidencing that ELR hydrogels are a promising biomaterial for breast cancer modeling.

AIMS: The postvoid residual (PVR) volume of urine in the bladder is widely used in clinical practice as a guide to initiate treatment, including clean-intermittent self-catheterization (CISC). It is often believed that an elevated PVR causes complications such as recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) and renal failure. However, evidence for this is limited and identifying alternative measures to guide treatment decisions may optimize patient care. At the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society (ICI-RS) meeting in 2023 a Think Tank addressed the question of whether we can define the optimal PVR at which CISC should be recommended, and whether there are other measures that could guide a CISC protocol. METHODS: The Think Tank conducted a literature review and expert consensus meeting focusing on current limitations in defining and measuring PVR, and highlighting other measures that may optimize selection for, and persistence with, CISC. RESULTS: There is no consensus on the threshold value of PVR that is considered "elevated" or "significant." There is a lack of standardization on terminology, and the normal range of PVR in different populations of different ages remains to be well-studied. The measurement of PVR is influenced by several factors, including intraindividual variation, timing and method of measurement. Furthermore, the evidence linking an elevated PVR with complications such as UTI and renal failure is mixed. Other measures, such as bladder voiding efficiency or urodynamic parameters, may be better at predicting such complications, and therefore may be more relevant at guiding a CISC protocol. CONCLUSIONS: There is a lack of high quality evidence to support PVR as a predictor for complications of UTI or renal failure. Threshold values for normal PVR in different populations are unknow, and so threshold values for "elevated" or "significant" PVR cannot be determined. Other factors, such as urodynamic findings, may be better at predicting complications and therefore guiding management decisions, and this remains to be studied. Areas for further research are proposed.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The Acute Cystitis Symptom Score (ACSS) is a patient self-reporting questionnaire for clinical diagnostics and patient-reported outcome (PRO), which may assess the symptoms and the effect on the quality of life in women with acute cystitis (AC). The current study aimed to create a validated Spanish version of the ACSS questionnaire. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The process of linguistic validation of the Spanish version of the ACSS consisted of the independent forward and backward translations, revision and reconciliation, and cognitive assessment. Clinical evaluation of the study version of the ACSS was carried out in clinics in Spain and Latin America. Statistical tests included the calculation of Cronbach's α, split-half reliability, specificity, sensitivity, diagnostic odds ratio, positive and negative likelihood ratio, and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: The study was performed on 132 patients [age (mean;SD) 45.0;17.8 years] with AC and 55 controls (44.5;12.2 years). Cronbach's α of the ACSS was 0.86, and the split-half reliability was 0.82. The summary scores of the ACSS domains were significantly higher in patients than in controls, 16.0 and 2.0 (p < 0.001), respectively. The predefined cut-off point of ≥6 for a summary score of the "Typical" domain resulted in a specificity of 83.6% and a sensitivity of 99.2% for the Spanish version of the ACSS. AUC was 0.91 [0.85; 0.97]. CONCLUSIONS: The validated Spanish ACSS questionnaire evaluates the symptoms and clinical outcomes of patients with AC. It can be used as a patient's self-diagnosis of AC, as a PRO measure tool, and help to rule out other pathologies in patients with voiding syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence (PPUI) has an enormous impact in quality of life (QoL). Transobturator-rethrourethral sling (AdVanceTMXP sling) is a well-established treatment option although there is paucity of data on long-term outcomes. Our objective was to assess the long-term functional outcomes and QoL in a cohort of men undergoing AdVanceTMXP sling surgery. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of men undergoing AdVanceTMXP sling in a tertiary referral institution from August 2013 to July 2020. 55 patients met the inclusion criteria, with a minimum follow-up of 12 months. Main outcomes were pre- and post-operative daily pad use and scoring in the ICIQ-SF questionnaire. Post-operative complications were assessed following the Clavien-Dindo classification system. QoL and satisfaction with the procedure were assessed through direct interview. RESULTS: Mean number of pads prior to surgery was 3.1, and mean ICIQ-SF score was 13.5. After surgery, mean daily pads use went to 1.2, and mean ICIQ-SF dropped to 5. With a mean follow-up of 42.36 months, 21.8% patients did not use any pads/day and 76.4% achieved social continence (0-1 pad/day). We found no statistically significant differences in outcomes of patients with follow-up of <36 months, 36-48 months, and >48 months (p = 0.067). CONCLUSIONS: AdVanceTMXP sling implantation in men with PPUI improves urinary incontinence and QoL, and their results are sustained over time.

In the developing brain, the phenomenon of neurogenesis is manifested heterotopically, that is, much the same neurogenetic steps occur at different places with a different timetable. This is due apparently to early molecular regionalization of the neural tube wall in the anteroposterior and dorsoventral dimensions, in a checkerboard pattern of more or less deformed quadrangular histogenetic areas. Their respective fate is apparently specified by a locally specific combination of active/repressed genes known as "molecular profile." This leads to position-dependent differential control of proliferation, neurogenesis, differentiation, and other aspects, eventually in a heterochronic manner across adjacent areal units with sufficiently different molecular profiles. It is not known how fixed these heterochronic patterns are. We reexamined here comparatively early patterns of forebrain and hindbrain neurogenesis in a lizard (Lacerta gallotia galloti), a bird (the chick), and a mammal (the rat), as demonstrated by activation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). This is an early marker of postmitotic neurons, which leaves unlabeled the neuroepithelial ventricular cells, so that we can examine cleared wholemounts of the reacted brains to have a birds-eye view of the emergent neuronal pattern at each stage. There is overall heterochrony between the basal and alar plates of the brain, a known fact, but, remarkably, heterochrony occurs even within the precocious basal plate among its final anteroposterior neuromeric subdivisions and their internal microzonal subdivisions. Some neuromeric units or microzones are precocious, while others follow suit without any specific spatial order or gradient; other similar neuromeric units remain retarded in the midst of quite advanced neighbors, though they do produce similar neurogenetic patterns at later stages. It was found that some details of such neuromeric heterochrony are species-specific, possibly related to differential morphogenetic properties. Given the molecular causal underpinning of the updated prosomeric model used here for interpretation, we comment on the close correlation between some genetic patterns and the observed AChE differentiation patterns.

Urethral stricture is a rare condition in women, representing a diagnostic challenge for the urologist. Its main etiology is traumatic or due to labor. Definitive treatment can be by means of dilations or urethroplasty using both local flaps and free grafts. In this study, we report the case of a patient with voiding symptoms during a period of 9 years after childbirth, despite an attempt of urethral dilation and chronic self-catheterization. The patient was finally diagnosed of a long distal urethral stricture, and she underwent urethroplasty with an anterior vaginal wall flap with satisfactory results. We take the opportunity to briefly review the diagnostic pathway in women with obstructive symptoms and the main female urethroplasty techniques.

The cell culture is the central piece of a biotechnological industrial process. It includes upstream (e.g. media preparation, fixed costs, etc.) and downstream steps (e.g. product purification, waste disposal, etc.). In the continuous mode of cell culture, a constant flow of fresh media replaces culture fluid until the system reaches a steady state. This steady state is the standard operation mode which, under very general conditions, is a function of the ratio between the cell density and the dilution rate and depends on the media supplied to the culture. To optimize the production process it is widely accepted that the concentration of the metabolites in this media should be carefully tuned. A poor media may not provide enough nutrients to the culture, while a media too rich in nutrients may be a waste of resources because, either the cells do not use all of the available nutrients, or worse, they over-consume them producing toxic byproducts. In this study, we show how an in-silico study of a genome scale metabolic network coupled to the dynamics of a chemostat could guide the strategy to optimize the media to be used in a continuous process. Given a known media we model the concentrations of the cells in a chemostat as a function of the dilution rate. Then, we cast the problem of optimizing the production process within a linear programming framework in which the goal is to minimize the cost of the media keeping fixed the cell concentration for a given dilution rate in the chemostat. We evaluate our results in two metabolic models: first a simplified model of mammalian cell metabolism, and then in a realistic genome-scale metabolic network of mammalian cells, the Chinese hamster ovary cell line. We explore the latter in more detail given specific meaning to the predictions of the concentrations of several metabolites.

The17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations Agenda 2030 constitute a global blueprint agenda and instrument for peace and prosperity worldwide. Artificial intelligence and other digital technologies that have emerged in the last years, are being currently applied in virtually every area of society, economy and the environment. Hence, it is unsurprising that their current role in the pursuance or hampering of the SDGs has become critical. This study aims at providing a snapshot and comprehensive view of the progress made and prospects in the relationship between artificial intelligence technologies and the SDGs. A comprehensive review of existing literature has been firstly conducted, after which a series SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analyses have been undertaken to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats inherent to artificial intelligence-driven technologies as facilitators or barriers to each of the SDGs. Based on the results of these analyses, a subsequent broader analysis is provided, from a position vantage, to (i) identify the efforts made in applying AI technologies in SDGs, (ii) pinpoint opportunities for further progress along the current decade, and (iii) distill ongoing challenges and target areas for important advances. The analysis is organized into six categories or perspectives of human needs: life, economic and technological development, social development, equality, resources and natural environment. Finally, a closing discussion is provided about the prospects, key guidelines and lessons learnt that should be adopted for guaranteeing a positive shift of artificial intelligence developments and applications towards fully supporting the SDGs attainment by 2030.

AIMS: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a very prevalent condition with a great impact on women's quality of life. At present, there is great controversy regarding the use of mesh in POP surgery. To understand the current moment, it is advisable to make a brief summary of the historical evolution of mesh use for pelvic floor pathology. The aim of this paper is to establish the position of the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and UroGynecology (SINUG for its acronym in Spanish) regarding vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery. METHODS: A working committee from the SINUG's scientific board performed a literature search about the use of vaginal meshes for pelvic organ prolapse reconstructive surgery and about the position of different societies. We analyzed the evolution into three periods: before the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statement, FDA statement, and after the statement. SINUG drew up a position statement regarding vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery, based on the available scientific evidence and the evolution of its use in different contexts. RESULTS: Before mesh appearance in the 1990s, native tissue repair was the surgical treatment of choice for POP. Vaginal mesh reconstructive surgery has been frequently accompanied by procedure underestimation by inexperienced surgeons, besides inadequate diagnoses and indications. This situation led to the presentation of serious complications including mesh extrusion, exposure, and contraction. CONCLUSIONS: Once reviewed the available evidence and the position of different societies, SINUG presents its vision in this communication, which is a summary of the document prepared by the society's scientific board.

AIMS: The aim of this paper is to stablish de position of the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and Urogynecology (SINUG) in relation to the use of suburethral meshes for the surgical treatment of female stress incontinence. METHODS: Tension-free mid-urethral slings (MUS) have become the most popular procedure for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI). In July 2018, the British government announced a pause in the use of meshes for both pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and urinary incontinence (UI) treatment without differentiating whether the meshes were used for treating UI or POP. The decision was taken to stop their use until the publication of the updated UI and POP guidelines of the British National Health Service, which is available from April 2019. SINUG has reviewed the evidence and official position of different societies in relation to the safety and efficacy of MUS in the surgical treatment of incontinence differentiating them from meshes used to repair POP. RESULTS: Data from synthetic mesh manufacturers indicate that in 2010, 300 000 women underwent surgical procedures to repair POP and approximately 260 000 were operated on for SUI. According to these estimates, approximately more than 80% of the surgical techniques for UI treatment were performed transvaginally with meshes. CONCLUSIONS: Once reviewed evidence and position of different societies, the SINUG presents its vision in this communication, which is a summary of the document analysing the state of topic prepared by the society.

PURPOSE: This work represents the efforts of the SIU-ICUD workgroup on this topic and comprehensive literature search of English language manuscripts regarding urologic surgery in spinal cord injury using key words of urologic surgery and spinal cord injury. Articles were compiled, and recommendations in the chapter are based on group discussion and intensive communication. The purpose is to review what has been published during the last decades on urological surgery for neurogenic bladder after spinal cord injury. METHODS: Surgical techniques applied in spinal cord injured patients for neurogenic bladder dysfunction have been reviewed and the published material evaluated. RESULTS: There are several techniques that can be used to treat neurogenic dysfunctions and symptoms in refractory cases where conservative treatment failed. The number of publications is small as are the number of patients with spinal cord injury in which they have been performed. The choice of techniques proposed to the patients depends on the exact functional pathology in bladder, bladder neck and urethral sphincter. The final informed choice will be made by the patient. CONCLUSION: There are surgical urological techniques available to treat neurologic dysfunctions in spinal cord injured patients.

Disruption of circadian rhythms, which are regulated by the circadian clock machinery, plays an important role in different long-term diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Melatonin has been reported to alleviate promotion and progression of HCC, but the potential contribution of circadian clock modulation is unknown. We investigated the effects of melatonin in mice which received diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (35 mg/kg body weight ip) once a week for 8 weeks. Melatonin was given at 5 or 10 mg kg-1 d-1 ip beginning 4 weeks after the onset of DEN administration and ending at the sacrifice time (10, 20, 30, or 40 weeks). Liver expression of Bmal1, Clock, Npas2, Rorα, and Sirt1 increased, whereas Cry1, Per1, Per2, Per3, CK1ε, Rev-erbα, and Rev-erbß decreased following DEN administration. Melatonin treatment prevented changes in the expression of clock genes, and this effect was accompanied by an upregulation of the MT1 receptor and reduced levels of the hypoxia-inducible factors Hif-1α and Hif-2α. An increased expression of p21, p53, and PARP1/2, a higher Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and a lower expression of Cyclin D1, CDK6, HSP70, HSP90, and GRP78 proteins were also observed in melatonin-treated mice. Melatonin significantly potentiated the suppression of proliferation and cell cycle arrest induced by the synthetic REV-ERB agonist SR9009 in human Hep3B cells, and BMAL1 knocking down attenuated the pro-apoptotic and antiproliferative effect of melatonin. Results support a contribution of changes in the circadian clock components to the beneficial effects of melatonin in HCC and highlight the usefulness of strategies modulating the circadian machinery in hepatocarcinogenesis.

AIMS: To describe all outcome parameters and definitions of cure used to report on outcome of surgical interventions for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in neuro-urological (NU) patients. METHODS: This systematic review was performed and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The study protocol was registered and published (CRD42016033303; http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO). Medline, Embase, Cochrane controlled trials databases, and clinicaltrial.gov were systematically searched for relevant publications until February 2017. RESULTS: A total of 3168 abstracts were screened. Seventeen studies reporting on SUI surgeries in NU patients were included. Sixteen different outcome parameters and nine definitions of cure were used. Six studies reported on objective outcome parameters mainly derived from urodynamic investigations. All studies reported on one or more subjective outcome parameters. Patient-reported pad use (reported during interview) was the most commonly used outcome parameter. Only three of 17 studies used standardized questionnaires (two on impact of incontinence and one on quality of life). Overall, a high risk of bias was found. CONCLUSIONS: We found a considerable heterogeneity in outcome parameters and definitions of cure used to report on outcome of surgical interventions for SUI in NU patients. The results of this systematic review may begin the dialogue to a future consensus on this topic. Standardization of outcome parameters and definitions of cure would enable researchers and clinicians to consistently compare outcomes of different studies and therapies.

AIM: The main goals of neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) management are preventing upper urinary tract damage (UUTD), improving continence, and quality of life. Here, we aimed to systematically assess all available evidence on urodynamics predicting UUTD in patients with NLUTD. METHODS: A systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement was performed in March 2017. Only neuro-urological patients assessed by urodynamics were included. Any outcome of upper urinary tract function were evaluated. RESULTS: Forty-nine studies (1 randomized controlled trial, 9 prospective, and 39 retrospective case series) reported urodynamic data on 4930 neuro-urological patients. Of those, 2828 (98%) were spina bifida (SB) children. The total number of adults was 2044, mainly having spinal cord injury (SCI) (60%). A low bladder compliance was found in 568 (46.3%) and 341 (29.3%) of the paediatric and adult population, respectively. Hydronephrosis (HDN) was detected in 557 children (27.8%) in 19/28 studies and 178 adults (14.6%), mainly SCI, in 14/21 studies. Nine out of 30 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients affected by HDN (16.8%) showed low compliance in 4/14 studies. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with SB and SCI have a higher risk of developing UUTD (mainly reported as HDN) compared to those with MS. Reduced compliance and high DLPP were major risk factors for UUTD. Although our findings clarify the mandatory role of urodynamics in the management of NLUTD, standardization and better implementation of assessments in daily practice may further improve outcomes of neuro-urological patients based on objective measurements, that is, urodynamics.

The sphingosine kinase (SphK)/sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) pathway is involved in multiple biological processes, including carcinogenesis. Melatonin shows beneficial effects in cell and animal models of hepatocellular carcinoma, but it is unknown if they are associated with the modulation of the SphK/S1P system, along with different downstream signaling pathways modified in cancer. We investigated the effects of melatonin in mice which received diethylnitrosamine (DEN) (35 mg/kg body weight i.p) once a week for 8 weeks. Melatonin was given at 5 or 10 mg/kg/day i.p. beginning 4 weeks after the onset of DEN administration and ending at the sacrifice time (10, 20, 30, or 40 weeks). Melatonin alleviated the distortion of normal hepatic architecture, lowered the incidence of preneoplastic/neoplastic lesions, and inhibited the expression of proliferative/cell cycle regulatory proteins (Ki67, PCNA, cyclin D1, cyclin E, CDK4, and CDK6). S1P levels and expression of SphK1, SphK2, and S1P receptors (S1PR1/S1PR3) were significantly elevated in DEN-treated mice. However, there was a decreased expression of S1P lyase. These effects were significantly abrogated in a time- and dose-dependent manner by melatonin, which also increased S1PR2 expression. Following DEN treatment, mice exhibited increased phosphorylation of PI3K, AKT, mTOR, STAT3, ERK, and p38, and a higher expression of NF-κB p50 and p65 subunits. Melatonin administration significantly inhibited those changes. Data obtained suggest a contribution of the SphK/S1P system and related signaling pathways to the protective effects of melatonin in hepatocarcinogenesis.

AIMS: To systematically review all available evidence on the effectiveness and complications of continent cutaneous stoma or tube (CCS/T) to treat bladder-emptying difficulties in adult neuro-urological patients. METHODS: The search strategy and studies selection were performed on Medline, Embase, and Cochrane using the PICOS method according to the PRISMA statement (CRD42015019212; http://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO). RESULTS: After screening 3,634 abstracts, 11 studies (all retrospective, enrolling 213 patients) were included in a narrative synthesis. Mean follow-up ranged from 21.6 months to 8.7 years (median: 36 months, IQR 28.5-44). At last follow-up, the ability to catheterize rate was ≥84% (except in one study: 58.3%) and the continence rate at stoma was >75%. Data comparing health-related quality-of-life before and after surgery were not available in any study. Overall, 85/213 postoperative events required reoperation: 7 events (7 patients) occurring ≤3 months postoperatively, 22 events (16 patients) >3 months, and 56 events (55 patients) for which the time after surgery was not specified. Sixty additional complications (60 patients) were reported but did not require surgical treatment. Tube stenosis occurred in 4-32% of the cases (median: 14%, IQR 9-24). Complications related to concomitant procedures (augmentation cystoplasty, pouch) included neovesicocutaneous fistulae, bladder stones, and bladder perforations. Risk of bias and confounding was high in all studies. CONCLUSIONS: CCS/T appears to be an effective treatment option in adult neuro-urological patients unable to perform intermittent self-catheterization through the urethra. However, the complication rate is meaningful and the quality of evidence is low, especially in terms of long-term outcomes including the impact on the quality-of-life.

AIMS: To systematically evaluate effectiveness and safety of bladder augmentation for adult neuro-urological patients. METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) statement was followed for review of publications. The Medline, Embase, and Cochrane controlled trial databases and clinicaltrial.gov were searched until January 2015. No limitations were placed on date or language. Non-original articles, conference abstracts, and publications involving children and animals were excluded. Risk-of-bias and confounder assessment was performed. RESULTS: A total of 20 studies including 511 patients were eligible for inclusion. The level of evidence for the included studies was low, most level 4 studies with only one level 3 study. The data were narratively synthesized. Across all studies high risk-of bias and confounding was found. Primary outcomes were assessed in 16 of the 20 studies and showed improved quality of life and anatomical changes as well as stable renal function. The secondary outcomes were reported in 17 of the 20 studies and urodynamic parameters and continence all demonstrated improvement after bladder reconstruction. Long-term complications continued up to 10 years post-operatively, including bowel dysfunction in 15% of the patients, stone formation in 10%, five bladder perforations and one bladder cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Available studies are not plentiful and of relatively poor quality, appropriately designed prospective studies are urgently needed. Despite this, bladder augmentation appears to be a highly effective procedure at protecting the upper urinary tract and improving quality of life. However, it is associated with relatively high morbidity in both the short and long term.

OBJECTIVE: To study whether there are factors related to secondary diagnoses (SDg) present in patients with prostate cancer that influence the development of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy (RP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective multicenter observational study was performed reviewing the medical records of 430 men who underwent RP due to organ-confined prostate cancer in 9 different hospitals. Two study groups were distinguished: Group A (GA): Patients without urinary incontinence after RP; Group B (GB): patients with any degree of post-surgical urinary incontinence. RESULTS: Average age at surgery was 63.42 years (range 45-73). 258 patients were continent after surgery and 172 patients complaint of any degree of incontinence after RP. A higher percentage of healthy patients was found in group A (continent after surgery) than in group B (p = 0.001). The most common SDg prior to surgery were hypertension, lower urinary tract symptoms, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and erectile dysfunction, but none did show a greater trend towards post-surgical incontinence. CONCLUSIONS: A better health status prior to surgery is associated to a lower incidence of new-onset urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. However, no correlation was found between the most common medical disorders and the development of post-surgical urinary incontinence.

Formulation of antioxidant agents is still a challenge that limits their application in the biomedical field. Pentablock copolymers obtained through modification of two common PEO-PPO-PEO copolymers (Pluronic F127 and F68) with poly(ε-carprolactone) (PCL) were evaluated regarding their capability to form nanocarriers suitable for gallic acid, methyl gallate, and ethyl gallate. Applying a dialysis method, PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL self-assembled into spherical micelles in 0.9% NaCl aqueous solution but notably differed in critical micellar concentration (CMC), micelle core hydrophobicity, and micelle size, as evidenced by pyrene fluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scattering. Cytotoxicity studies showed that the copolymers were safe at concentrations well above the CMC. Transfer of gallic acid and derivatives from aqueous medium to the micelle phase was characterized in terms of distribution constant and free energy of transference, which were shown to be strongly dependent on the hydrophobicity of the gallate derivatives and the length of PCL in the pentablock copolymer. Antioxidant activity of gallates was challenged against DPPH previously loaded in PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL micelles. The more the hydrophobicity of the gallate derivative, the greater the capability to enter in the micelle and to consume free radicals. In vitro release studies of gallic acid, methyl gallate, and ethyl gallate from the pentablock copolymer micelles also evidenced the influence of the hydrophobicity of both the gallate derivative and the micelle core on release rate, recording a variety of release patterns. Overall, PCL/F127/PCL and PCL/F68/PCL appear as suitable nanocarriers of potent antioxidant agents in a wide range of polarities, which may be useful for diverse therapeutic applications.
