BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has serious physiological and psychological consequences. The long-term (>12 weeks post-infection) impact of COVID-19 on mental health, specifically in older adults, is unclear. We longitudinally assessed the association of COVID-19 with depression symptomatology in community-dwelling older adults with metabolic syndrome within the framework of the PREDIMED-Plus cohort. METHODS: Participants (n = 5486) aged 55-75 years were included in this longitudinal cohort. COVID-19 status (positive/negative) determined by tests (e.g. polymerase chain reaction severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, IgG) was confirmed via event adjudication (410 cases). Pre- and post-COVID-19 depressive symptomatology was ascertained from annual assessments conducted using a validated 21-item Spanish Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Multivariable linear and logistic regression models assessed the association between COVID-19 and depression symptomatology. RESULTS: COVID-19 in older adults was associated with higher post-COVID-19 BDI-II scores measured at a median (interquartile range) of 29 (15-40) weeks post-infection [fully adjusted ß = 0.65 points, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.15-1.15; p = 0.011]. This association was particularly prominent in women (ß = 1.38 points, 95% CI 0.44-2.33, p = 0.004). COVID-19 was associated with 62% increased odds of elevated depression risk (BDI-II ≥ 14) post-COVID-19 when adjusted for confounders (odds ratio; 95% CI 1.13-2.30, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 was associated with long-term depression risk in older adults with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome, particularly in women. Thus, long-term evaluations of the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and preventive public health initiatives are warranted in older adults.

In this paper, a ratiometric approach to sensing temperature variations is shown using specialty fiber optic devices. We analyzed the transmission response of cascaded segments of multicore fibers (MCFs), and dissimilar lengths were found to generate an adequate scheme for ratiometric operation. The perturbation of optical parameters in the MCFs translates to a rich spectral behavior in which some peaks increase their intensity while others decrease their intensity. Thus, by selecting opposite-behavior peaks, highly sensitive ratiometric measurements that provide robustness against spurious fluctuations can be performed. We implemented this approach using seven-core fiber (SCF) segments of 5.8 cm and 9.9 cm. To test the system's response under controlled perturbations, we heated one of the segments from ambient temperature up to 150 °C. We observed defined peaks with opposite behavior as a function of temperature. Two pairs of peaks within the interrogation window were selected to perform ratiometric calculations. Ratiometric measurements exhibited sensitivities 6-14 times higher than single-wavelength measurements. A similar trend with enhanced sensitivity in both peak pairs was obtained. In contrast to conventional interferometric schemes, the proposed approach does not require expensive facilities or micrometric-resolution equipment. Moreover, our approach has the potential to be realized using commercial splicers, detectors, and filters.

We investigate the effect of lattice disorder and local correlation effects in finite and periodic silicene structures caused by carbon doping using first-principles calculations. For both finite and periodic silicene structures, the electronic properties of carbon-doped monolayers are dramatically changed by controlling the doping sites in the structures, which is related to the amount of disorder introduced in the lattice and electron-electron correlation effects. By changing the position of the carbon dopants, we found that a Mott-Anderson transition is achieved. Moreover, the band gap is determined by the level of lattice disorder and electronic correlation effects. Finally, these structures are ferromagnetic even under disorder which has potential applications in Si-based nanoelectronics, such as field-effect transistors (FETs).

An all-fiber approach is presented to measure surface tension. The experimental realization relies on the use of a specialty fiber, a so-called two-hole fiber (THF), which serves a two-fold purpose: providing a capillary channel to produce bubbles while having the means to measure the power reflected at the end facet of the fiber core. We demonstrate that provided a controlled injection of gas into the hollow channels of the THF, surface tension measurements are possible by simply tracking the Fresnel reflection at the distal end of the THF. Our results show that the characteristic times involved in the bubble formation process, from where the surface tension of the liquids under test is retrieved, can be measured from the train of pulses generated by the continuous formation and detachment of bubbles.

PURPOSE: Parallel transmission techniques in MRI have the potential to improve the image quality near metal implants at 3 T. However, current testing of implants only evaluates the risk of radiofrequency (RF) heating in phantoms in circularly polarized mode. We investigate the influence of changing the transmission settings in a 2-channel body coil on the peak temperature near 2 CoCrMo hip prostheses, using adaptive specific absorption rate (SAR) as an estimate of RF heating. METHODS: Adaptive SAR is a SAR averaging method that is optimized to correlate with thermal simulations and limit the temperature to 39°C near hip implants. The simulated peak temperature was compared when using whole-body SAR, SAR10g , and adaptive SAR as a constraint for the maximum allowed input power. Adaptive SAR was used as a fast estimate of temperature to evaluate the trade-off between good image quality and low heating near the hip implants. Electromagnetic simulations were validated by simulating and measuring B1 maps and electric fields in a phantom at 3 T. RESULTS: Simulations and measurements showed excellent agreement. Limiting whole-body SAR to 2 W/kg and SAR10g to 10 W/kg resulted in temperatures up to 49.3°C and 40.7°C near the hip implants after 30 minutes of RF exposure, respectively. Predictions based on adaptive SAR limited the temperature to 39°C, and allowed to improve the B1 field distribution while preventing peak temperatures near the hip implants. CONCLUSION: Significant RF heating can occur at 3 T near hip implants when parallel transmission is used. Adaptive SAR can be integrated in RF shimming algorithms to improve the uniformity and reduce heating.

RESUMO

The rotating radiofrequency coil (RRFC) has been developed recently as an alternative approach to multi-channel phased-array coils. The single-element RRFC avoids inter-channel coupling and allows a larger coil element with better B1 field penetration when compared with an array counterpart. However, dedicated image reconstruction algorithms require accurate estimation of temporally varying coil sensitivities to remove artefacts caused by coil rotation. Various methods have been developed to estimate unknown sensitivity profiles from a few experimentally measured sensitivity maps, but these methods become problematic when the RRFC is used as a transceiver coil. In this work, a novel and practical radial encoding method is introduced for the RRFC to facilitate image reconstruction without the measurement or estimation of rotation-dependent sensitivity profiles. Theoretical analyses suggest that the rotation-dependent sensitivities of the RRFC can be used to create a uniform profile with careful choice of sampling positions and imaging parameters. To test this new imaging method, dedicated electronics were designed and built to control the RRFC speed and hence positions in synchrony with imaging parameters. High-quality phantom and animal images acquired on a 9.4 T pre-clinical scanner demonstrate the feasibility and potential of this new RRFC method.

In this work, we show that it is possible to obtain important ubiquitous physical characteristics when an aggregation of many systems is taken into account. We discuss the possibility of obtaining not only an anomalous diffusion process, but also a Non-Linear diffusion equation, that leads to a probability distribution, when using a set of non-Markovian processes. This probability distribution shows a power law behavior in the structure of its tails. It also reflects the anomalous transport characteristics of the ensemble of particles. This ubiquitous behavior, with a power law in the diffusive transport and the structure of the probability distribution, is related to a fast fluctuating phenomenon presented in the noise parameter. We discuss all the previous results using a financial time series example.

In the present study, a collection of 76 biocide-sensitive bacterial strains isolated from organically produced food were adapted by repeated exposure to increasing concentrations of the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) benzalkonium chloride (BC) and hexadecylpyridinium chloride (HDP). The sensitivity of both wildtype strains and their corresponding QAC-adapted strains to other biocides and to antibiotics was studied. QAC tolerance increased in 88.2% of strains for BC and in 30.3% of strains for HDP, with increases in minimum inhibitory concentrations between 2 and over 100 fold. Adaptive resistance was stable after 20 subcultures in biocide-free medium for 7 and 5 of the BC- and HDP-adapted strains, respectively. Adaptation to BC and HDP also reduced the susceptibility to other biocides, mainly hexachlorophene (CF), didecyldimethylammonium bromide (AB), triclosan (TC) and chlorhexidine (CH). BC-adapted strains showed increased antibiotic resistance to ampicillin (AM) followed by sulfamethoxazol (SXT) and cefotaxime (CTX), and some showed increased sensitivity to ceftazidime (CAZ), CTX, AM and STX. Changes in antibiotic resistance in HDP-adapted strains were more heterogeneous and strain-dependent. Main efflux pump genes detected in QAC-adapted strains were acrB, sugE, norC, qacE and qacH, as well as antibiotic resistance genes aac(6_)-Ie-aph(2_)-Ia, aph(2_)-Ic, ant(4_)-Ia, lsa, mrsA/B, ereA, ermB and cat. Membrane anisotropy experiments revealed that QAC adaptation induced an increase in membrane rigidity in the case of BC, while response to HDP was more heterogeneous and strain-dependent. Growth capacity was significantly higher in some QAC-adapted strains and strain-dependent changes in heat tolerance were also detected in QAC-adapted strains. Gastric acid or bile resistances do not seem to be influenced by QAC adaptation.

Because of the intensive use of pharmaceutical substances in human life, studies on the detection of these chemical compounds and their metabolites as pollutants in water bodies are continuously reported. Some pharmaceutical agents are associated with adverse effects to aquatic life, even at very low concentrations (ng L-1 to µg L-1). For instance, the presence of antibiotics and hormones has been associated with increasing proliferation of antibiotic resistant pathogens and feminization and masculinization of some aquatic organisms. Currently, new attempts are being made to minimize or fully remove these types of pollutants from aquatic systems to protect the environment and human health. In this regard, physicochemical and biological treatments are among the most promising technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing pharmaceutical pollutants. These treatments are green alternatives for the degradation of hazardous organic compounds into nontoxic by-products. Here, we review some of the physicochemical and biological treatment methods used for the removal of the most extensively used antibiotics and hormones. Enzymatic oxidation, photocatalysis and electrochemical oxidation are described in terms of the aforementioned pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs). The use of membrane technologies to separate different groups of antibiotics and hormones prior to biologic or physicochemical treatment methods is also addressed.

BACKGROUND: Effective preventive interventions for both eating disorders and obesity in adolescence should be focused on shared risk factors. We analyzed the association between television (TV) viewing time and the risk of eating disorders, as well as the potential role of obesity in this association. METHODS: The sample consisted of a total of 3458 Spanish adolescents, aged 13-18.5 years, from the Food and Assessment of the Nutritional Status of Adolescents (AVENA) and Physical Activity as a Preventive Measure of the Development of Overweight, Obesity, Allergies, Infections, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Adolescents (AFINOS) studies. Adolescents' TV time was assessed by self-report. Body mass index was calculated and the adolescents were classified into non-overweight and overweight-obesity. The risk of eating disorders was evaluated using the SCOFF questionnaire. RESULTS: Adolescents who watched TV >1 h/day had a higher risk for eating disorders, compared with those adolescents who watch TV <1 h/day. Also, overweight-obese adolescents had a higher risk for eating disorders than those who were non-overweight. Analyses across groups of TV viewing time and weight status showed similar trends, so that the higher the time spent in TV viewing, the higher the risk of eating disorders, regardless of weight status. CONCLUSIONS: TV viewing time might be a focal point for prevention of both eating disorders and obesity in adolescence.

A novel fiber optic temperature sensor based on a liquid-core multimode interference device is demonstrated. The advantage of such structure is that the thermo-optic coefficient (TOC) of the liquid is at least one order of magnitude larger than that of silica and this, combined with the fact that the TOC of silica and the liquid have opposite signs, provides a liquid-core multimode fiber (MMF) highly sensitive to temperature. Since the refractive index of the liquid can be easily modified, this allows us to control the modal properties of the liquid-core MMF at will and the sensor sensitivity can be easily tuned by selecting the refractive index of the liquid in the core of the device. The maximum sensitivity measured in our experiments is 20 nm/°C in the low-temperature regime up to 60 °C. To the best of our knowledge, to date, this is the largest sensitivity reported for fiber-based MMI temperature sensors.

PURPOSE: This article aims to present a fast, efficient and accurate multi-layer integral method (MIM) for the evaluation of complex spatiotemporal eddy currents in nonmagnetic and thin volumes of irregular geometries induced by arbitrary arrangements of gradient coils. METHODS: The volume of interest is divided into a number of layers, wherein the thickness of each layer is assumed to be smaller than the skin depth and where one of the linear dimensions is much smaller than the remaining two dimensions. The diffusion equation of the current density is solved both in time-harmonic and transient domain. RESULTS: The experimentally measured magnetic fields produced by the coil and the induced eddy currents as well as the corresponding time-decay constants were in close agreement with the results produced by the MIM. Relevant parameters such as power loss and force induced by the eddy currents in a split cryostat were simulated using the MIM. CONCLUSION: The proposed method is capable of accurately simulating the current diffusion process inside thin volumes, such as the magnet cryostat. The method permits the priori-calculation of optimal pre-emphasis parameters. The MIM enables unified designs of gradient coil-magnet structures for an optimal mitigation of deleterious eddy current effects.

We compare the performance of a self-mixing (SM) sensing system based on an uncooled monolithic array of 24×1 vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in two modes of operation: single active channel and the concurrent multichannel operation. We find that the signal-to-noise ratio of individual SM sensors in a VCSEL array is markedly improved by multichannel operation, as a consequence of the increased operational temperature of the sensors. The performance improvement can be further increased by manufacturing VCSEL arrays with smaller pitch. This has the potential to produce an imaging system with high spatial and temporal resolutions that can be operated without temperature stabilization.

Cell culture on biopolymeric scaffolds has provided treatments for tissue engineering. Biopolymeric mixtures based on gelatin (Ge), chitosan (Ch) and hyaluronic acid (Ha) have been used to make scaffolds for wound healing. Thermal and physical properties of scaffolds prepared with Ge, Ch and Ha were characterized. Thermal characterization was made by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and physical characterization by gas pycnometry and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of Ge content and cross-linking on thermophysical properties were evaluated by means of a factorial experiment design (central composite face centered). Gelatin content was the main factor that affects the thermophysical properties (microstructure and thermal transitions) of the scaffold. The effect of Ge content of the scaffolds for tissue engineering was studied by seeding skin cells on the biopolymers. The cell attachment was not significantly modified at different Ge contents; however, the cell growth rate increased linearly with the decrease of the Ge content. This relationship together with the thermophysical characterization may be used to design scaffolds for tissue engineering.

Although avian hybrid zones in the Great Plains have been studied for almost 70 years, we know surprisingly little about the fitness costs to hybrids that keep these zones narrow. We compare age ratios in grosbeaks (Pheucticus ludovicianus and P. melanocephalus) and towhees (Pipilo erythropthalums and P. maculatus), two species pairs that differ in their life histories and molt schedules, to evaluate survival between hybrids and parentals. We then contrast molt and migratory divides as possible sources of selection against hybrids. Hybrid grosbeaks had 27%-33% lower survival relative to their parentals, whereas hybrid towhees had survival rates similar to parentals. Age ratio data for hybrid grosbeaks suggest high mortality in older birds, as expected if selection operates after the first year of life. This pattern is consistent with parental species of grosbeaks having contrasting molt schedules relative to migration, suggesting high mortality costs to hybrids driven by molt biology, which are expressed later in life. Contrasts in molt schedules are absent in towhees. While migratory divides may exist for towhees and grosbeaks, the low adult survival of hybrid grosbeaks suggest that molt may be an important and underappreciated source of selection maintaining this and other narrow avian hybrid zones.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that physical activity (PA) could prevent cognitive decline. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between changes in PA and changes in cognitive function in a cohort of adults with metabolic syndrome. METHODS: Longitudinal observational study including 5,500 adults (mean age 65 years, SD = 5; women = 49.3% ) with metabolic syndrome. Participants underwent physical activity measurements and cognitive evaluation at baseline and at two-years of follow-up. PA was quantified using the Minnesota questionnaire-shortened version. Cognitive function was evaluated using a battery of tests: Mini-Mental Test Examination, Clock Drawing Test, Trail Making Test A and B, Verbal Fluency Test, and Digit Span. The primary outcome was two-year change in cognition, measured through the Global Composite Score (GCS) of all neuropsychological tests. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression models were fitted with baseline PA and their changes as the main exposures and changes in cognitive function as the outcome. RESULTS: No significant association was found between PA levels (or their changes) in the GCS of cognitive function. A greater increase in PA levels was associated with a more favorable two-year change in the Trail Making Test A (Q4 versus Q1: b = - 2.24s, 95% CI -4.36 to -0.12s; p-trend = 0.020). No significant association was found for other neuropsychological test. CONCLUSION: Our results do not support an association between increases in PA and the evolution of the global cognitive function at two-year in an intervention trial which included PA promotion in one of its two randomized arms, but they suggested a possible beneficial effect of PA on attentional function in older adults.

Anemia causes hypo-oxygenation in the brain, which could lead to cognitive disorders. We examined dietary iron intake as well as anemia markers (i.e., hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume) and diabetes coexistence in relation to neuropsychological function and quality of life. In this study, 6117 community-dwelling adults aged 55-75 years (men) and 60-75 years (women) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome were involved. We performed the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Trail Making Test parts A and B (TMT-A/B), Semantic Verbal Fluency of animals (VFT-a), Phonological Verbal Fluency of letter P (VFT-p), Digit Span Test (DST), the Clock Drawing Test (CDT), and the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF36-HRQL test). Dietary iron intake did not influence neuropsychological function or quality of life. However, anemia and lower levels of anemia markers were associated with worse scores in all neurophysiological and SF36-HRQL tests overall, but were especially clear in the MMSE, TMT-B (cognitive flexibility), and the physical component of the SF36-HRQL test. The relationships between anemia and diminished performance in the TMT-A/B and VFT tasks were notably pronounced and statistically significant solely among participants with diabetes. In brief, anemia and reduced levels of anemia markers were linked to inferior cognitive function, worse scores in different domains of executive function, as well as a poorer physical, but not mental, component of quality of life. It was also suggested that the coexistence of diabetes in anemic patients may exacerbate this negative impact on cognition. Nevertheless, dietary iron intake showed no correlation with any of the outcomes. To make conclusive recommendations for clinical practice, our findings need to be thoroughly tested through methodologically rigorous studies that minimize the risk of reverse causality.

BACKGROUND: At present, scientific consensus exists on the multifactorial etiopatogenia of obesity. Both professionals and researchers agree that treatment must also have a multifactorial approach, including diet, physical activity, pharmacology and/or surgical treatment. These two last ones should be reserved for those cases of morbid obesities or in case of failure of the previous ones. The aim of the PRONAF study is to determine what type of exercise combined with caloric restriction is the most appropriate to be included in overweigth and obesity intervention programs, and the aim of this paper is to describe the design and the evaluation methods used to carry out the PRONAF study. METHODS/DESIGN: One-hundred nineteen overweight (46 males) and 120 obese (61 males) subjects aged 18-50 years were randomly assigned to a strength training group, an endurance training group, a combined strength + endurance training group or a diet and physical activity recommendations group. The intervention period was 22 weeks (in all cases 3 times/wk of training for 22 weeks and 2 weeks for pre and post evaluation). All subjects followed a hypocaloric diet (25-30% less energy intake than the daily energy expenditure estimated by accelerometry). 29-34% of the total energy intake came from fat, 14-20% from protein, and 50-55% from carbohydrates. The mayor outcome variables assesed were, biochemical and inflamatory markers, body composition, energy balance, physical fitness, nutritional habits, genetic profile and quality of life. 180 (75.3%) subjects finished the study, with a dropout rate of 24.7%. Dropout reasons included: personal reasons 17 (28.8%), low adherence to exercise 3 (5.1%), low adherence to diet 6 (10.2%), job change 6 (10.2%), and lost interest 27 (45.8%). DISCUSSION: Feasibility of the study has been proven, with a low dropout rate which corresponds to the estimated sample size. Transfer of knowledge is foreseen as a spin-off, in order that overweight and obese subjects can benefit from the results. The aim is to transfer it to sports centres. Effectiveness on individual health-related parameter in order to determine the most effective training programme will be analysed in forthcoming publications. Manzanilla Aloreña (or Aloreña) table olives are naturally fermented traditional green olives with a denomination of protection (DOP). The aim of this study was to search for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with technological properties of interest for possible inclusion in a starter or protective culture preparation or also as probiotics. A collection of 144 LAB obtained from Aloreña green table olives naturally-fermented by four small-medium enterprises (SMEs) from Málaga (Spain), including lactobacilli (81.94%), leuconostocs (10.42%) and pediococci (7.64%) were studied. REP-PCR clustering and further identification of strains by sequencing of phes and rpo genes revealed that all lactobacilli from the different SMEs were Lactobacillus pentosus. Pediococci were identified as Pediococcus parvulus (SME1) and leuconostocs as Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides (SME1 and SME4). Genotyping revealed that strains were not clonally related and exhibited a considerable degree of genomic diversity specially for lactobacilli and also for leuconostocs. Some strains exhibit useful technological properties such as production of antimicrobial substances active against pathogenic bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Salmonella enterica, utilization of raffinose and stachyose, production of bile salt hydrolase, phytase and haeme-dependent catalase activities, growth at 10 °C and in the presence of 6.5% NaCl, good acidifying capacity and also resistance to freezing. However, none of the isolates showed protease or amylase activity, and also did not exhibit biogenic amine production from histidine, ornithine, cysteine or tyrosine. On the basis of data obtained, selected strains with potential traits were tested for their survival at low pH and their tolerance to bile salts, and the survival capacity demonstrated by some of the analysed strains are encouraging to further study their potential as probiotics.

The shielding of electromagnetic noise is critical in obtaining magnetic resonance imaging measurements in the ultra-low magnetic field regime where the intrinsic signal-to-noise ratio is very small. The traditional approach of using an enclosure for electromagnetic shielding is expensive and hinders system portability. We describe here the use of a CNN-based software gradiometer to suppress the effect of electromagnetic ambient background noise sources that inductively couple into the signal detection coils. The system involves three ambient noise monitoring coils placed at a distance from the magnetic resonance signal detector. The three coils were used to synthesize the ambient noise captured by the signal detector; a convolutional neural network approach was used. Mathematical foundations are provided to justify the noise suppression framework. The results show that as much as 20-fold noise suppression can be achieved using an optimized convolutional neural network and simultaneous ambient noise measurements. The proposed approach has the potential to replace the requirement for magnetically shielded enclosures and make ultra-low field magnetic resonance imaging truly portable.
