RESUMO

A non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a promising tool against the development of bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases. The recently revealed development of microbial resistance to traditional drugs has increased interest in the use of NTPs. We have studied and compared the physical and microbicidal properties of two types of NTP sources based on a cometary discharge in the point-to-point electrode configuration and a corona discharge in the point-to-ring electrode configuration. The electrical and emission properties of both discharges are reported. The microbicidal effect of NTP sources was tested on three strains of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (including the methicillin-resistant strain), the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the yeast Candida albicans, and the micromycete Trichophyton interdigitale. In general, the cometary discharge is a less stable source of NTP and mostly forms smaller but more rapidly emerging inhibition zones on agar plates. Due to the point-to-ring electrode configuration, the second type of discharge has higher stability and provides larger affected but often not completely inhibited zones. However, after 60 min of exposure, the NTP sources based on the cometary and point-to-ring discharges showed a similar microbicidal effect for bacteria and an individual effect for microscopic fungi.

RESUMO

Traditionally, two classes of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) are recognized with respect to their light-emission properties. These are usually referred to as the "red" and the "blue" emitting SiNCs, based on the spectral region in which the larger part of their luminescence is concentrated. The origin of the "blue" luminescence is still disputed and is very probably different in different systems. One of the important contributions to the discussion about the origin of the "blue" luminescence was the finding that the exposure of SiNCs to even trace amounts of nitrogen in the presence of oxygen induces the "blue" emission, even in originally "red"-emitting SiNCs. Here, we obtained a different result. We show that the treatment of "red" emitting, already oxidized SiNCs in a water-based environment containing air-related radicals including nitrogen-containing species as well as oxygen, diminishes, rather than induces the "blue" luminescence.

RESUMO

The employment of bulky aliphatic cations in the manufacture of moisture-stable materials has triggered the development and application of 2D/3D perovskites as sensitizers in moisture-stable solar cells. Although it is true that the moisture stability increases, it is also true that the photovoltaic performance of 2D/3D PVK materials is severely limited owing to quantum and dielectric confinement effects. Accordingly, it is necessary the synthesis and deep optical characterization of materials with an adequate management of dielectric contrast between the layers. Here, we demonstrate the successful tuning of dielectric confinement by the inclusion of a conjugated molecule, as a bulky cation, in the fabrication of the 2D/3D PVK material (C6H5NH3)2(CH3NH3)n-1PbnI3n+1, where n = 3 or 5. The absence of excitonic states related to n ≥ 1 at room temperature, as well as the very low concentration of excitons after 1 ps of excitation of samples in which n ≥ 3, provide strong evidence of an excellent ability to dissociate excitons into free charge carriers. As consequence films with low n, presenting higher stability than standard 3D perovskites, improved significantly their performance, showing one of the highest short circuit current density (Jsc ≈ 13.8) obtained to date for perovskite materials within the 2D limit (n < 10).

RESUMO

Multicolour photochromism of Ag-TiO2 nanocomposite material was found several years ago but its microscopic origin is still ambiguous. We study the initial stages of the effect of light exposure on extinction spectrum of this material prepared by photocatalytic technique. We propose a simple model to analyse the experimental data that suggests that the extinction changes are due to a pure shift of the plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles after light exposure. The homogeneous spectral widths (100-200 meV) of plasmon resonance of individual classes of nanoparticles were found to increase with the resonance frequency.

RESUMO

Non-thermal plasma has proved its benefits in medicine, plasma assisted polymerization, food industry and many other fields. Even though, the ability of non-thermal plasma to modify surface properties of various materials is generally known, only limited attention has been given to exploitations of this treatment on conductive polymers. Here, we show study of non-thermal plasma treatment on properties of globular and nanostructured polypyrrole in the distilled water. We observe that plasma presence over the suspension level doesn't change morphology of the polymer (shape), but significantly influences its elemental composition and physical properties. After 60 min of treatment, the relative concentration of chloride counter ions decreased approximately 3 and 4 times for nanostructured and globular form, respectively and concentration of oxygen increased approximately 3 times for both forms. Simultaneously, conductivity decrease (14 times for globular and 2 times for nanostructured one) and changes in zeta potential characteristics of both samples were observed. The modification evolution was dominated by multi-exponential function with time constants having values approximately 1 and 10 min for both samples. It is expected that these time constants are related to two modification processes connected to direct presence of the spark and to long-lived species generated by the plasma.
