RESUMO

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs)─polymer melts with added salts─exhibit ion conduction and high mechanical properties, and are thus promising materials for future energy storage devices. The ion conductivity in an SPE is intricately connected to the salt ion distribution in the polymer matrix. The relationship between ion diffusion and ion distribution in SPEs remains unresolved. Here, we conduct coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations and establish correlations between ion distribution and transport for a phenomenological SPE model. We propose phase diagrams of SPEs as a function of ion pair size, ion concentration, and the Bjerrum length of the material. A crossover from a discrete ion aggregate to a percolated ion aggregate is demonstrated as a function of ion pair size for low ion concentration in the SPE. The ion diffusion shows a strong correlation with its size, as has been found experimentally. The work provides important design strategies for controlling the ion distribution and enhancing ion conductivity in a polymer matrix.

CdS, characterized by its comparatively narrow energy band gap (∼2.4 eV), is an appropriate material for prospective use as a photoanode in photoelectrochemical water splitting. Regrettably, it encounters several obstacles for practical and large-scale applications, including issues such as bulk carrier recombination and diminished conductivity. Here, we have tried to address these challenges by fabricating a novel photoelectrode (ZnO/CdS) composed of one-dimensional ZnO nanorods (NRs) decorated with two-dimensional CdS nanosheets (NSs). A facile two-step chemical method comprising electrodeposition along with chemical bath deposition is employed to synthesize the ZnO NRs, CdS NSs, and ZnO/CdS nanostructures. The prepared nanostructures have been investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy. The fabricated ZnO/CdS nanostructures have shown enhanced photoelectrochemical properties due to the improvement of the semiconductor junction surface area and thereby enhanced visible light absorption. The incorporation of CdS NSs has been further found to promote the rate of the charge separation and transfer process. Subsequently, the fabricated ZnO/CdS photoelectrodes achieved a photocurrent conversion efficiency 3 times higher than that of a planar ZnO NR photoanode and showed excellent performance under visible light irradiation. The highest applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency (% ABPE) of about ∼0.63% has been obtained for the sample with thicker CdS NSs on ZnO NRs with a photocurrent density of ∼1.87 mA/cm2 under AM 1.5 G illumination. The newly synthesized nanostructures further demonstrate that the full photovoltaic capacity of nanomaterials is yet to be exhausted.

Textbook outcome (TO) is a composite measure representing an ideal perioperative course, which has been utilized to assess the quality of care in oesophagogastric cancer (OGC) surgery. We aim to determine TO rates among OGC patients in a UK tertiary center, investigate predictors of TO attainment, and evaluate the relationship between TO and survival. A retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected departmental database between 2006 and 2021 was conducted. Patients that underwent radical OGC surgery with curative intent were included. TO attainment required margin-negative resection, adequate lymphadenectomy, uncomplicated postoperative course, and no hospital readmission. Predictors of TO were investigated using multivariable logistic regression. The association between TO and survival was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression modeling. In sum, 667 esophageal cancer and 312 gastric cancer patients were included. TO was achieved in 35.1% of esophagectomy patients and 51.3% of gastrectomy patients. Several factors were independently associated with a low likelihood of TO attainment: T3 stage (odds ratio (OR): 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.22-0.79], p = 0.008) and T4 stage (OR:0.26, 95% CI [0.08-0.72], p = 0.013) in the esophagectomy cohort and high BMI (OR:0.93, 95% CI [0.88-0.98], p = 0.011) in the gastrectomy cohort. TO attainment was associated with greater overall survival and recurrence-free survival in esophagectomy and gastrectomy cohorts. TO is a relevant quality metric that can be utilized to compare surgical performance between centers and investigate patients at risk of TO failure. Enhancement of preoperative care measures can improve TO rates and, subsequently, long-term survival.

Macrocycles offer an attractive format for drug development due to their good binding properties and potential to cross cell membranes. To efficiently identify macrocyclic ligands for new targets, methods for the synthesis and screening of large combinatorial libraries of small cyclic peptides were developed, many of them using thiol groups for efficient peptide macrocyclization. However, a weakness of these libraries is that invariant thiol-containing building blocks such as cysteine are used, resulting in a region that does not contribute to library diversity but increases molecule size. Herein, we synthesized a series of structurally diverse thiol-containing elements and used them for the combinatorial synthesis of a 2,688-member library of small, structurally diverse peptidic macrocycles with unprecedented skeletal complexity. We then used this library to discover potent thrombin and plasma kallikrein inhibitors, some also demonstrating favorable membrane permeability. X-ray structure analysis of macrocycle-target complexes showed that the size and shape of the newly developed thiol elements are key for binding. The strategy and library format presented in this work significantly enhance structural diversity by allowing combinatorial modifications to a previously invariant region of peptide macrocycles, which may be broadly applied in the development of membrane permeable therapeutics.

Background: EBT-XD film specially designed for high dose verifications such as stereotactic treatments. The dose response of the film can be affected by several factors, the curly nature of the film being one of them. In this study this curly nature of the film was investigated for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) plan verifications. Materials and methods: For this study, 18 SBRT (11 prostate, 3 spines, and 4 lungs) cases were enrolled. For all the cases, VMAT plans were created in the Monaco treatment planning system and plan was delivered in Elekta Versa HD linear accelerator and delivered fluence was captured by EBT-XD films. All films were scanned with and without a compression plate. All the films were analyzed using the single-channel film method using the red channel. Results: A significant difference in the gamma passing rates (GPR) for the films scanned with and without the compression plate was observed. The maximum percentage differences in GPR between using and not using a compression plate were 12.7% for 1% 1 mm, 8.1% for 2% 2 mm, 7.5% for 3% 2 mm, and 5% for 3% 3mm criteria. Similarly, the mean %difference in GPR was 5.8% for 1% 1 mm, 2.4% for 2% 2 mm, 1.6% for 3% 2 mm and 0.96% for 3% 3 mm criteria. Conclusion: The results suggest that placing a compression plate over the film during scanning provided a great advantage in achieving a more accurate gamma passing rate irrespective of gamma criteria.

MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Fully mature acorns of Quercus variabilis, Q. aliena, Q. mongolica, and Q. glandulifera are desiccation-sensitive. X-ray computer tomography showed that cotyledons shrink during drying, but embryos are protected. Information available on recalcitrant acorns of tropical and sub-tropical species of Quercus suggests that an impermeable pericarp, which limits the entry and loss of water only through the hilum (scar), is the underlying mechanism that prevents drying of the embryo axis following dispersal until the germination season. However, there is a lack of consensus supporting this proposition across species, and it is not well understood if such mechanisms occur in temperate Quercus species. This study investigated the significance of the acorn pericarp for temperate oak species and presents an ecological framework based on the post-dispersal climatic conditions. Using Quercus variabilis, Q. aliena, Q. mongolica, and Q. glandulifera acorns, the relationship between moisture content (MC) and germination was established, and X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) was used to understand the internal structural changes of cotyledons and embryonic axis occurring during desiccation. Water entry and exit routes through the scar, pericarp and apex were determined by imbibition and drying experiments. Climatic data and acorn morphological characteristics and germination were subjected to a principal component analysis (PCA). Freshly dispersed acorns of all species had a moisture content (MC) above 35% fresh weight (FW) basis, but drying to 15-10% MC resulted in complete loss of viability, implying recalcitrance behaviour. X-ray CT images suggested that the pericarp offers some protection to cotyledons and embryonic axis during desiccation, but it is contingent on MC. Extensive drying to a low MC with the scar and apex covered with vaseline resulted in internal tissues shrinkage, corresponding with viability loss. Water could enter or exit through the pericarp, albeit at a much slower rate than through the scar. A combination of factors including acorn anatomy, moisture content at the time of dispersal, microhabitat, the position of acorns in the soil prevent embryo desiccation below the critical MC and thus promotes survival of acorns on/in the soil during winter in temperate regions. Pericarp anatomy, to some extent, prevents excessive drying of the embryonic axis by slowing water movement, but prolonged drying or predatory pressure could result in pericarp cracks, favouring the absorption of water during sporadic rain. In the latter case, the survival of acorns possibly depends extensively on the continuous erratic rainfall, i.e. continuous wet-dry cycle, but in-situ experiments are yet to be performed to test this hypothesis.

This study investigates the incorporation of Ba2+ at a low concentration into CsPbI2Br, resulting in the formation of mixed CsPb1-xBaxI2Br perovskite films. Photovoltaic devices utilizing these Ba-doped CsPbI2Br (Ba-CsPbI2Br) perovskite films achieved a higher stabilized power conversion efficiency of 14.07% compared to 11.60% for pure CsPbI2Br films. First-principles density functional theory calculations indicate that the improved device performance can be attributed to the efficient transport of conduction electrons across the interface between Ba-CsPbI2Br and the TiO2 electron transporting layer (ETL). The Ba-CsPbI2Br/TiO2 interface exhibits a type-II staggered band alignment with a smaller conduction band offset (CBO) of 0.25 eV, in contrast to the CsPbI2Br/TiO2 interface with a CBO of 0.48 eV. The reduced CBO at the Ba-CsPbI2Br/TiO2 interface diminishes the barrier for conduction electrons to transfer from the Ba-CsPbI2Br layer to the TiO2 layer, facilitating efficient charge transport.

Background: Beam matching is widely used to ensure that linear accelerators used in radiotherapy have equal dosimetry characteristics. Small-field output factors (OF) were measured using different detectors infour beam-matched linear accelerators and the measured OFs were compared with existing treatment planning system (TPS) Monte Carlo algorithm calculated OFs. Materials and methods: Three Elekta Versa HDTM and one Elekta InfinityTMlinear accelerators with photon energies of 6 MV flattening filter (FF), 10 MVFF, 6 MV flattening filter free (FFF) and 10 MVFFF were used in this study. All the Linac'swere beam-matched, Dosimetry beam data were ± 1% compare with Reference Linac. Ten different type of detectors (four ionizationchambers and six diode detectors) were used for small-field OF measurements. The OFs were measured for field sizes of 1 × 1 to 10 × 10 cm2, and normalized to 10 × 10 cm2 field size. The uncorrected and corrected OFs were calculated from these measurements. The corrected OF was compare with existing treatment planning system (TPS) Monte Carlo algorithm calculated OFs. Results: The small-field corrected and Uncorrected OF variations among the linear accelerators was within 1% for all energies and detectors. An increase in field size led to a reduction in the difference between OFs among the detectors, which was the case for all energies. The RSD values decreased with increasing field size. The TRS 483 provided Detector-specificoutput-correction factor (OCF) reduced uncertainty in small-field measurements. Conclusion: It is necessary to implement the OF-correction of small fields in a TPS. Special care must be taken to incorporate the corrected small-field OF in a TPS.

Deinococcus radiodurans harbors a multipartite ploid genome system consisting of two chromosomes and two plasmids present in multiple copies. How these discrete genome elements are maintained and inherited is not well understood. PprA, a pleiotropic protein involved in radioresistance, has been characterized for its roles in DNA repair, genome segregation, and cell division in this bacterium. Here, we show that PprA regulates ploidy of chromosome I and II and inhibits the activity of drDnaA, the initiator protein in D. radiodurans. We found that pprA deletion resulted in an increased genomic content and ploidy of both the chromosomal elements. Expression of PprA in trans rescued the phenotypes of the pprA mutant. To understand the molecular mechanism underlying these phenotypes, we characterized drDnaA and drDnaB. As expected for an initiator protein, recombinant drDnaA showed sequence-specific interactions with the putative oriC sequence in chromosome I (oriCI). Both drDnaA and drDnaB showed ATPase activity, also typical of initiator proteins, but only drDnaB exhibited 5'→3' dsDNA helicase activity in vitro. drDnaA and drDnaB showed homotypic and heterotypic interactions with each other, which were perturbed by PprA. Interestingly, PprA has inhibited the ATPase activity of drDnaA but showed no effect on the activity of drDnaB. Regulation of chromosome copy number and inhibition of the initiator protein functions by PprA strongly suggest that it plays a role as a checkpoint regulator of the DNA replication initiation in D. radiodurans perhaps through its interaction with the replication initiation machinery.

BACKGROUND: For species that produce seeds with a water-impermeable coat, i.e. physical dormancy (PY), it has been widely recognized that (1) seeds shed at a permeable state cannot become impermeable after dispersal; and (2) dormancy-cycling, i.e. a permeable ↔ impermeable transition, does not occur. Given a tight relationship between moisture content and onset of seed-coat impermeability, seeds maturing at low relative humidity (RH) and occurring in a high-temperature environment are inferred to produce impermeable coats, and ex situ drying of permeable seeds can lead to the onset of impermeability. SCOPE AND CONCLUSION: It is proposed here that permeable seeds dispersed at low RH and in high-temperature soils might become impermeable due to continuous drying. Similarly, seeds with shallow PY dormancy (with higher moisture content immediately after becoming impermeable) can cycle back to a permeable state or absolute PY (complete dry state) when RH increases or decreases, respectively. A conceptual model is developed to propose that seeds from several genera of 19 angiosperm families at the time of natural dispersal can be (1) impermeable (dormant), i.e. primary dormancy; (2) impermeable (dormant) and become permeable (non-dormant) and then enter a dormant state in the soil, often referred to as secondary dormancy; (3) permeable (non-dormant) and become impermeable (dormant) in the soil, i.e. enforced dormancy; or (4) dormant or non-dormant, but cycle between permeable and non-permeable states depending on the soil conditions, i.e. dormancy-cycling, which is different from sensitivity-cycling occurring during dormancy break. It is suggested that this phenomenon could influence the dormancy-breaking pattern, but detailed studies of this are lacking.

Thiol groups are suitable handles for site-selectively modifying, immobilizing or cyclizing individual peptides or entire peptide libraries. A limiting step in producing the thiol-functionalized peptides is the chromatographic purification, which is particularly laborious and costly if many peptides or even large libraries are to be produced. Herein, we present a strategy in which thiol-functionalized peptides are obtained in >90% purity and free of reducing agent, without a single chromatographic purification step. In brief, peptides are synthesized on a solid support linked via a disulfide bridge, the side-chain protecting groups are eliminated and washed away while the peptides remain on resin, and rather pure peptides are released from the solid support by reductive cleavage of the disulfide linker. Application of a volatile reducing agent, 1,4-butanedithiol (BDT), enabled removal of the agent by evaporation. We demonstrate that the approach is suited for the parallel synthesis of many peptides and that peptides containing a second thiol group can directly be cyclized by bis-electrophilic alkylating reagents for producing libraries of cyclic peptides.

The mass concentrations of PM2.5 were measured at a tropical megacity, Bengaluru, India, for the year 2015. The mean mass concentrations showed large fluctuations on day to day basis with values less than the Indian National Ambient Air Quality Standard (INAAQS) of 60 µg m-3. The observed annual mean mass concentration of 28 ± 11 µg m-3 is also within the INAAQS value of 40 µg m-3. The diurnal trend of PM2.5 concentration showed bimodal distribution, with the primary peak in the morning and the secondary one during the late evening hours. The timing of the peaks matched with rush traffic hours. Strong seasonality is observed in the diurnal concentration of PM2.5 with the highest value during winter (50 ± 22 µg m-3) and the lowest of (11 ± 5 µg m-3) in the monsoon. The weekend PM2.5 mass concentrations were less than those on the weekdays up to a maximum of 100%. The decrease in PM2.5 mass concentration was also observed on the day of the strike when many busses were off the road. Vehicular traffic is suggested as one of the primary contributors of PM2.5 in this region. The health risk assessment in this study, points to ischemic heart disease as the primary cause of PM2.5-induced death.

Background: The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate an efficacy and toxicity profile of hypofractionated radiotherapy (67.5 Gy in 25 fractions) to conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (78 Gy in 39 fractions) in prostate cancer patients with intermediate and high-risk disease. Materials and methods: From January 2015 to December 2018, 168 patients were randomized to hypofractionated radiation treatment and conventional fractionated radiation treatment schedules of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) to the prostate and seminal vesicles. All the patients also received androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiation therapy started after ADT. Results: The median (range) follow-up was 51 (31-63) and 53 (33-64) months in the hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated regimes, respectively. The 3-year biochemical no evidence of disease (bNED) rates were 86.9% and 73.8% in the hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated groups, respectively (p = 0.032, significant). The 3-year bNED rates in patients at a high risk [i.e., pretreatment prostate-specific antigen (PSA) > 20 ng/mL, Gleason score ≥ 8, or T ≥ 2 c], were 87.9% and 73.5% (p = 0.007, significant) in the hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated radiotherapy groups, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found for late toxicity between the two groups, with 3-year grade 2 gastrointestinal toxicity rates of 19% and 16.7% and 3-year grade 2 genitourinary toxicity rates of 15.5% and 11.9% in the hypofractionated and conventionally fractionated radiotherapy groups, respectively. Conclusion: Hypofractionated schedule is superior to the conventional fractionation schedule of radiation treatment in terms of bNED in intermediate and high grade prostate cancer patients. Also, the late toxicity is found to be equivalent between the two treatment groups.

The Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has in multiple ways affected healthcare delivery to non-COVID patients throughout the world. Adequate transfusion services are fundamental in ongoing therapy of patients with hematological ailments. We present the transfusion services in the hematology daycare under the department of Hematology and supported by the Blood Bank at our institution for the period 12th April 2020-30th June 2020, which saw the stringent lockdown and unlocking Phase I in India, declared in lieu of the pandemic. A 56 % reduction in total transfusion sessions was observed in 2020 (588 sessions given to 176 patients) compared to 1336 sessions in 516 patients over the same period in 2019. The reductions were seen across the different blood components (packed red blood cells [PRBC]: 585 vs. 1840, platelet rich plasma: 372 vs. 1313, single donor platelet 18 vs. 16), with a significant reduction in the mean PRBC transfused per PRBC transfusion session (1.11 vs 1.99, p<0.001) in 2020, compared to 2019. There were however no major differences in the transfusion practices across the different phases of the lockdown. Our study highlights the detrimental reduction in transfusion services due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdown and showcases the remedial strategies taken to maximize transfusion support to patients during this period. Our observations might help to provide insights to adequately combat possible similar adverse situations in the future.

Cooling rate is a critical parameter affecting the success of cell cryopreservation. Fast cooling can result in intracellular ice formation (IIF), while slow cooling can bring solution effects injury, both are detrimental to the cells. Whilst most of the studies have investigated how IIF affects cells, solution effects injury has received little attention. Here, we studied the solution effects injury of human T lymphocytes by cryomicroscopy and tested the osmoprotective ability of some frequently used cryoprotective agents (CPAs) such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), glycerol, trehalose, urea and l-proline. We further investigated the relationship between cell volume, latent heat and solution effects cell injury. We found that solution effects injury during interrupted slow cooling was caused by high concentration of the extracellular solution rather than eutectic formation and solutes precipitation. DMSO, glycerol and trehalose can protect cells from solution effects injury, while l-proline and urea cannot under the same condition. The cell volume and latent heat are not crucial for causing solution effects injury in cells. This work confirms that high osmotic pressure, rather than eutectic formation, leads to cell injury. It also suggests that cell volume and latent heat may not be a key factor for explaining solution effects injury and its prevention in the cryopreservation of human T lymphocytes.

Cryopreservation of human T lymphocytes has become an essential tool for some cell-based immunotherapy. However, the cryopreservation procedure of the cells has not been systematically studied. In particular, the key factors of ice seeding and cryoprotective agents (CPA) driving the success of cryopreservation remain unclear. We systematically investigated the key factors, including cooling rate, ice-seeding temperature, CPA concentration, and types of CPA, during cryopreservation of human T lymphocytes with controlled ice nucleation. We found that ice seeding at below -10 °C could enable human T lymphocytes to be cooled at 90 °C min-1 with high relative viability and recovery after rewarming, 94.9% and 90.2%, respectively, which are significantly higher than those without ice seeding (P < 0.001). After optimization, the concentration of dimethyl sulphoxide was as low as 2% (v/v) with relative viability and recovery of 95.4% and 100.8%, respectively, at the cooling rate of 90 °C min-1 after ice seeding at -16 °C. The cryopreservation procedure developed in this study could facilitate the understanding of the mechanism for ice seeding and cell injury and offer a promising cryopreservation method with a high cooling rate and extremely low toxicity for extensive clinical application of immunotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: The grading system of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC) is not well established. In this study, we aimed to compare the application of Fuhrman nuclear grade (FNG) with the novel chromophobe tumor grade (CTG). We also evaluated the correlation of these two grading systems with the clinical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive cases of ChRCC diagnosed on nephrectomy during 2005-2014 were identified. The clinical details of the patients were retrieved. Histopathology slides were reviewed and the nuclear grading was assigned using standard FNG and the CTG system. The CTG and FNG gradings were correlated with clinical outcome. RESULTS: A total of 80 cases were retrieved. Distribution of FNG was as follows: FNG-1, 1 (1.3%); FNG-2, 23 (28.3%); FNG-3, 44 (55.0%); and FNG-4, 12 (15%). CTG distribution was as follows: CTG-1, 48 (60.0%); CTG-2, 20 (25.0%); and CTG-3 12 (15.0%). Follow-up data was available in 46 cases; the median follow-up was 23.9 months (range 1-96.4 months). The median time to recurrence/metastasis was 17.2 months (range 3.2-31.2 months). Mean disease-free survival (DFS) was 68.5 months. Both CTG (P < 0.001) and FNG (P = 0.001) correlated with DFS; however, only CTG retained this significance when only the nonsarcomatous cases were analyzed. On receiver operating characteristics curve analysis, CTG had higher predictive accuracy for DFS for the entire group, while FNG lost the statistical significance when the nonsarcomatous cases were analyzed. CTG (P = 0.001) but not FNG (P = 0.106) correlated with the disease-specific adverse events in non-sarcomatous cases. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to apply CTG in ChRCC. It is a better predictor of DFS and disease-specific adverse events. CTG is more appropriate and applicable than the FNG in grading ChRCC.

Glycoconjugates, due to their diverse functions, are widely regarded as biologically important molecules. Artemisinic acid 1 occurs naturally in the plant Artemisia annua and is considered to be the biogenetic precursor of the antimalarial drug, artemisinin 2. We report herein the design and synthesis of diverse artemisinic acid derived glycoconjugates. We have synthesized 12-O-artemisinic acid-glycoconjugates (7a-k) and 12-N-artemisinic acid-glycoconjugates (8a-k) by utilizing Cu(i)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions (Click chemistry) with various synthesized sugar azides (6a-k) in good to excellent yields along with two fluorescently labeled compounds, 12-O-artemisinic acid-glycoconjugate 11 and 12-N-artemisinic acid-glycoconjugate 12, to investigate the mode of action of these compounds in biological systems. All the synthesized artemisinic acid glycoconjugates were assayed for their efficacy against the MCF7 cell line. Our anticancer studies indicated that all the synthesized compounds inhibited the growth of MCF7 cells in a dose dependent manner, barring compounds 4 and 7d. However, these compounds exhibit moderate cytotoxicity, as is evident from their IC50 values.

Sleep apnea, which is the periodic cessation of breathing during sleep, is a major health problem affecting over 10 million people in the United States and is associated with several sequelae, including hypertension and stroke. Clinical studies suggest that abnormal carotid body (CB) activity may be a driver of sleep apnea. Because gaseous molecules are important determinants of CB activity, aberrations in their signaling could lead to sleep apnea. Here, we report that mice deficient in heme oxygenase-2 (HO-2), which generates the gaseous molecule carbon monoxide (CO), exhibit sleep apnea characterized by high apnea and hypopnea indices during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Similar high apnea and hypopnea indices were also noted in prehypertensive spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats, which are known to exhibit CB hyperactivity. We identified the gaseous molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as the major effector molecule driving apneas. Genetic ablation of the H2S-synthesizing enzyme cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) normalized breathing in HO-2-/- mice. Pharmacologic inhibition of CSE with l-propargyl glycine prevented apneas in both HO-2-/- mice and SH rats. These observations demonstrate that dysregulated CO and H2S signaling in the CB leads to apneas and suggest that CSE inhibition may be a useful therapeutic intervention for preventing CB-driven sleep apnea.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious condition leading to heart failure, persistent sepsis. The management of IE involving valve is mainly excision of the infected valve and replacement with a heart valve; which are also at the risk of prosthetic valve endocarditis. Hence repair of the valve with autologous pericardium is much more physiological. We had a 20-year-old male presented with features of heart failure and high-grade fever not responding to optimum medical management. Two-dimensional echocardiogram revealed vegetation on pulmonary valve cusps with the erosion of the left and right cusps. Neo cusps with autologous pericardium offered good hemodynamics with trivial regurgitation. The patient is doing well with normal pulmonary valve function 3 months after surgery. This technique is reliable, economic, and easily reproducible.
