RESUMO

Background and objectives: We aimed to evaluate the effects of the water drinking test (WDT) on several systemic and ocular parameters, including choroidal thickness, which was assessed through optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), in glaucoma suspects. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 eyes from 20 glaucoma suspects without any systemic or ocular diseases were included in this prospective observational study. All the participants undertook the WDT, which required the drinking of 1 L of table water in 5 min. The outcome measures included IOP, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP), ocular pulse amplitude (OPA), and subfoveal and peripapillary choroidal thickness, which were assessed at baseline and at four 15 min intervals after the WDT. Generalized least squares models and mixed model analyses that take into account repeated measurements were used to assess the changes over time of these parameters. Results: All the ocular and systemic parameters showed statistically significant changes at all time points compared to baseline apart from choroidal thickness. The peak changes were an IOP of 20.1 mmHg versus 17.3 mmHg at 45 min, an SBP of 137.6 mmHg versus 125 mmHg at 30 min, a DBP of 95.9 mmHg versus 85.7 mmHg at 15 min, and an MOP of 53.51 mmHg versus 48.89 mmHg at 15 min. Conclusions: Despite elevations in IOP and significant changes in all the assessed systemic parameters, the WDT was not associated with changes in choroidal thickness in glaucoma suspects.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate whether a seasonal distribution of the frequency of exudative age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD) recurrences exists. METHODS: In total, 129 eyes with 171 recurrences in patients suffering from wet AMD were included in the study. All the patients had been treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections according to Pro Re Nata treatment regimen. Recurrence was defined as the re-detection of sub-retinal fluid, intraretinal fluid, and/or sub-macular hemorrhage in optical coherence tomography scans, after at least two consecutive monthly examinations with a "dry" macula. The year was divided in three 4-month periods (zone A: June-September, zone B: October-January, and zone C: February-May) based on the weather conditions prevailing in each period. Mean temperature and hours of sunlight exposure were the main weather markers recorded. RESULTS: Eighty-two recurrences (48%) occurred during the period June-September, 50 (29.2%) during the period October-January, and 39 (22.8%) during the period February-May (Chi-square = 17.5, p < 0.001). Among the groups, neither patients' age (78 ± 8 years A, 76 ± 7 years B, and 79 ± 8 years C, p = 0.15) nor gender status (40% men A, 36% men B, and 51% men C, p = 0.35) differed significantly. Mean temperature was 27.6 ± 1.8 °C, 15.1 ± 4.6 °C, and 16.5 ± 4.4 °C in zones A, B, and C, respectively. Hours (h) of sunlight exposure (average hours/month) were 344 ± 34 h, 188 ± 42 h, and 223 ± 57 h in zones A, B, and C. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that the frequency of wet AMD recurrences is significantly elevated during the warmer months, possibly due to the higher levels of UV radiation and mean temperature. Further research is necessary to validate our findings.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Emerging evidence suggests that choroidal microcirculation and microstructural changes after verteporfin photodynamic therapy (vPDT) for chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) can be shown in detail using OCT-Angiography (OCT-A). The use of OCT-A for the examination of choriocapillaris (CC) has attracted significant attention as the technique offers potential explanations for the effects of vPDT on choroidal tissue. METHODS: A meticulous literature search was performed in the PubMed database without restriction on year of publication until June 2021. The reference list of all electronically retrieved articles was carefully reviewed for potentially relevant articles that had not been identified. RESULTS: We identified and reviewed 11 studies reporting a comprehensive update on microvasculature and morphologic changes of the CC layer as seen on OCT-A in chronic CSC. The reviewed articles extensively analyze both the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the CC flow pattern after applying vPDT safety-enhanced protocols. The changes in the CC plexus indicate the potential of beneficial or deleterious treatment effect on choroidal tissue remodeling. The reviewed series have revealed variability of flow pattern, vessel density, and perfusion of the CC over time. CONCLUSION: The CC plexus alterations during the post-vPDT period in chronic CSC may imply the treatment effect on choroidal tissue, indicating the potential of anatomical or functional recovery over time. The reviewed literature may confirm the diagnostic value of OCT-A in the assessment of the pathophysiology of eyes with CSC.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine whether glaucoma patients after trabeculectomy could benefit more from subconjunctival injections of bevacizumab than 5-FU or placebo. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-one eyes of 51 patients were recruited for primary MMC (0.2 mg/mL for 1 min) augmented trabeculectomy. 17 patients were randomly assigned to receive 1.25 mg (0.05 mL) of bevacizumab augmentation, 21 patients were assigned to receive 0.1 mL of 50 mg/mL 5-FU and 13 patients were assigned to a control group receiving a normal saline injection as a placebo. Initial recruitment included 58 patients, but seven patients had to be excluded from the study for various reasons. Postoperative follow up of IOP and bleb characteristics was carried out at 1 day, 1 week, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after surgery. All analyses where carried out by two masked clinicians. IOP reduction was statistically significant (p < 0.05) across all three groups between baseline visit and final 1-year postoperative visit. There was no significant difference of the final average IOP values between the three groups. Bleb evaluation was made using the Moorfields bleb grading system (MBGS) after 1 year follow up. Central bleb area was statistically greater in the Bevacizumab group when compared with the 5-FU group but not with the placebo group. The vascularity of the central bleb was significantly different between the groups with the Bevacizumab group showing the least vascularity. Vascularity of the peripheral bleb was also decreased in the Bevacizumab group when compared with the placebo group but not with the 5-FU group. CONCLUSION: The 12-month IOP results showed no significant differences between the groups of patients after Bevacizumab, 5-FU or placebo to augment primary MMC enhanced trabeculectomy. However, by the analysis of bleb morphology there was a significant difference in terms of central bleb area and vascularity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To study the effects of mean apnea-hypopnea duration (MAD), a useful indicator of blood oxygenation, on peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macular ganglion cell to inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) and macular retinal thickness in patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). METHODS: Sixty-five patients recently diagnosed with OSAHS and 35 healthy individuals were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. OSAHS patients were divided according to their MAD values into group 1 with 16 participants (MAD:10-15.5 s), group 2 with 17 participants (MAD:15.5-19 s), group 3 with 17 participants (MAD:19-30 s) and group 4 with 15 participants (MAD > 30 s). The average and sectorial values of RNFL, GC-IPL and retinal thickness were measured by SS-OCT (DRI OCT Triton, Topcon). Intraocular pressure was recorded by Goldmann Applanation and Pascal Dynamic Contour Tonometer (DCT-IOP). RESULTS: The average RNFL and retinal thickness values were higher in group 4, but did not reach statistical significance. With the exception of the central 1 mm at the fovea, GC-IPL was always thickened in group 4, and significant differences were evident when its average value was compared with group 2 (p = 0.03), its superior and inferior-nasal values were compared with group 2 (p = 0.02, p = 0.006, respectively) and group 3 (p = 0.01, p = 0.02, respectively), its superior-temporal value was compared with group 3 (p = 0.003) and the control group (p = 0.03), and its superior-nasal value was compared with group 2 (p = 0.03), group 3 (p = 0.001) and the control group (p = 0.03). DCT-IOP was significantly positively correlated with the duration of sleep in which oxygen saturation (SaO2 ) was decreased under 90% (r = 0.359, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: We report a novel observation of GC-IPL thickening in OSAHS patients experiencing long MAD, a parameter which incorporates the severity of breathing events during sleep. Higher DCT-IOP was noted with advancing hypoxemia.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe the use of equine pericardium as an off-label temporary emergency treatment of scleral and corneal perforations. METHODS: Three eyes of two male patients aged 34 and 38 years were included, i.e. a case with a history of severe bilateral thermal burn undergoing phacoemulsification complicated by tearing of the main port causing iris exposure and a patient with bilateral corneal perforation secondary to non-infectious corneal melt due to presumed ocular non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug abuse. The equine pericardium patch was soaked in balanced salt solution, trimmed and sutured over the perforated area with interrupted nylon 10-0 sutures. Slit-lamp photographs were taken before and immediately after surgery as well as at 2 and 5 months postoperatively. RESULTS: A watertight closure of the perforation was achieved in both cases. No evidence of infection, severe inflammation, leakage or hypotony was detected throughout the observation period. The first patient developed a pseudopterygium over the pericardium patch 5 months after surgery. The second patient showed at 2 months a bilateral melt of the pericardium and loosening of the sutures. After removal of the latter, a tectonically stable scar was evident in both eyes. CONCLUSION: Equine pericardium offered an effective primary treatment in cases of non-infectious globe perforation and may be considered when other materials, e.g. amniotic membrane, corneal or scleral allografts, are not readily available. Further studies may further elucidate the safety and efficacy profile of this biomaterial in ophthalmic surgery.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To introduce the use of corneal epithelial mapping by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) as an ancillary testing for the identification of areas of loose epithelial adherence in recurrent corneal erosion syndrome (RCES), and the subsequent treatment of the latter with anterior stromal puncture (ASP). METHODS: Five patients were presented with RCES following traumatic corneal abrasions. Following resolution of acute episodes, AS-OCT epithelial mapping was performed revealing in all patients an area of increased epithelial thickness (hot spot) corresponding to the site of loose attachment of the epithelium to the epithelial basement membrane. ASP to the area of epithelial thickening, as delineated by the epithelial map, was performed. RESULTS: To date, none of the patients has shown any signs of disease recurrence over a period ranging from 6 to 20 months following the application of epithelial map-guided ASP. CONCLUSIONS: AS-OCT epithelial mapping can reveal the exact area of loose epithelial adherence in RCES. Hence, epithelial mapping can delineate the target area for treatment with ASP and may decrease the high failure rates of ASP.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To present functional and anatomic outcomes of combination therapy with ranibizumab and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in a series of retinal angiomatous proliferation (RAP) cases. METHODS: A total of 17 eyes of 17 patients with RAP were included. Thirteen eyes were treatment naïve and 4 were already on ranibizumab monotherapy. Combined treatment with single-dose ranibizumab and PDT was performed on all treatment-naïve cases. Follow-up was performed every month for 6-38 months, using optical coherence tomography and indocyanine green angiography when necessary. RESULTS: Overall, 6 out of 7 treatment-naïve cases with stage I or II disease manifested complete angiographic resolution of the hot spot with a single injection of ranibizumab plus PDT. In stage III disease, 7 out of 10 eyes showed persistent leakage immediately after the combined treatment. The rate of hot spot occlusion was found to correlate with the stage of disease (p = 0.05). There was a significant improvement in posttreatment BCVA for all patients regardless of disease stage (p = 0.02), which was more evident in the earlier stages. Improvement was also greater for treatment-naïve patients (p = 0.03). The posttreatment improvement in BCVA was strongly correlated with hot spot occlusion (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Single-dose modified anti-VEGF treatment in combination with PDT may provide long-term regression at the initial stages of RAP.

RESUMO

To evaluate the efficacy and outcomes of tectonic epikeratoplasty with use of ethanol-preserved corneal grafts for the management of perforated corneal melts. The present retrospective case series includes 10 eyes which underwent tectonic epikeratoplasty for perforated corneal melts. The stromal remainders of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) graft preparation were stored in 95% ethanol and used as emergency tectonic grafts for restoring globe integrity after sterile and infectious perforated corneal melts. In 6 cases with subtotal corneal melt, DMEK remainders (endothelium-denuded corneoscleral buttons) were used for 'limbus to limbus' tectonic epikeratoplasty and in 4 cases DSAEK remainders (anterior stroma) were used to seal focal perforated melts. Graft storage time was 5.1 ± 4.9 (ranging from 0.5 to 17) months. The surgeries were successful in all cases with restitution of the globe integrity. During the postoperative course 4 cases developed a graft melt (corneoscleral button for limbus to limbus tectonic epikeratoplasty, n = 3; lamellar patch, n = 1) within 2-6 months after the initial procedure. Three patients underwent successful repeat tectonic epikeratoplasty. In the fourth case of graft melt the globe was enucleated due to underlying expulsive haemorrhage and severe pain. The short-term results of the present case series suggest that the use of ethanol-stored stromal remainder of donor corneas after endothelial keratoplasty is an efficient temporary measure for tectonic restoration of perforated corneas.

RESUMO

Born in Vienna, in mid 19th century, Ernst Fuchs became an innovative ophthalmologist and is currently considered as the father of modern ophthalmology. Conditions like heterochromic uveitis and endothelial dystrophy were discovered by Fuchs and a series of ocular diseases are named after him. His work dealing with eye pathology, entitled: "Textbook of Ophthalmology", became known as the masterpiece of the 19th century ophthalmology. In ocular oncology, Fuchs introduced first the "sarcom des uvealtractus" (uveal sarcoma), known today as uveal melanoma. His treatment approach by enucleation was in vogue for more than 100 years, while his theory for hepatic metastasis of ocular cancer remains valid.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the photoreceptor layer in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion associated with macular ischemia, using a method of en face optical coherence tomography (OCT) representation of the ellipsoid zone. METHODS: Customized macular OCT scans of 9 patients (10 eyes) with branch retinal vein occlusion and macular ischemia were exported and subsequently postprocessed (removal of vascular and cystic spaces' shadows, segmentation, and alignment to the retinal pigment epithelium). The ellipsoid band was then isolated, aligned, and used to produce an en face OCT image. Areas with photoreceptor loss (hyporeflective ellipsoid) were compared with ischemic areas as identified in an early-phase fluorescein angiography. RESULTS: The areas of capillary nonperfusion (as detected in fluorescein angiography) were closely associated with disruption of the ellipsoid zone (depicted as areas of low reflectance in the en face reconstruction of the OCT images). The ellipsoid zone disruption had a patchy appearance and either sharp or fuzzy borders, depending on the grade of the loss of reflectance. CONCLUSION: En face OCT reconstruction and subsequent representation of ellipsoid zone revealed a close association between capillary nonperfusion and photoreceptor disruption in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion. It seems that the deep capillary plexus plays an important role on the metabolic demands of outer retina and, consequently, an ischemia at the level of deep capillary plexus has significant impact on the integrity of the photoreceptors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We report a case of hemorrhagic occlusive retinal vasculitis (HORV) after prophylactic intracameral vancomycin use during an uneventful cataract surgery treated with early anti-VEGF treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old female underwent uneventful cataract surgery with prophylactic intracameral vancomycin during the procedure. On the seventh post-operative-day, she presented with sudden painful, visual loss. Fundus examination revealed peripheral hemorrhagic retinal vasculitis. She received anti-VEGF therapy to prevent further vision loss and retinal neovascularization due to extensive retinal ischemia. At the 6-month follow-up visit, visual acuity was 20/20 with no sign of neovascularization. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative HORV is a devastating condition that can occur after otherwise uncomplicated cataract surgery. The nature of this rare condition remains unknown. Early anti-VEGF administration seems to demonstrate favorable results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To report the negative effect of Nd: Yag (Neodymium-doped: Yttrium Aluminium Garnet) laser capsulotomy on the intraocular pressure (IOP) and the trabeculectomy bleb integrity, in a small series of eyes, both trabeculectomised and pseudophakic, following the laser application for the management of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). METHODS: This is a retrospective, non-comparative interventional case series study, in which 20 trabeculectomised and pseudophakic eyes from 15 patients, with otherwise well functioning blebs, were presented with uncontrolled IOP, in a variable distance of time following the application of YAG laser capsulotomy. Student paired t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between IOP before Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy (16 mmHg ± 3 mmHg) and the respective one, 2 to 6 months after Nd: Yag capsulotomy (34.5 ± 11 mmHg). RESULTS: All of the cases failed to respond to conservative treatment and were successfully managed with the implantation of Ahmed drainage devices. All patients showed flat filtering bleb and uncontrolled IOP (34.5 ± 11 mmHg), under maximum topical treatment, in a period of 2 to 6 months following Nd: YAG laser caspulotomy. The implantation of Ahmed valve proved to be effective treatment for these patients (IOP < 21 mmHg). CONCLUSIONS: Although Nd: Yag laser capsulotomy is considered a safe surgical procedure and usually is done without second thought, in this series of eyes, it is postulated that it may be responsible for the deregulation of the filtering bleb and subsequent loss of IOP control. We consider that laser capsulotomy should be performed with caution, especially in eyes with previous trabeculectomy. Also close monitoring of the intraocular pressure and assessment of eventual bleb morphology variations in the follow-up period is mandatory. Further studies are needed in order to confirm our findings.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is a rare metabolic disorder, affecting the metabolism of branched chain amino-acids (Valine, Leukine, Isoleukine). We present a rare case of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in a MSUD patient. CASE PRESENTATION: We performed amino acid analysis of aqueous humour, vitreous and serum samples obtained during surgery from a 24 year old female MSUD patient successfully operated on RRD. Serum values for a-amino-butyric acid, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, ornithine and histidine were low, while values for citrulline, methionine and lysine were borderline low, all attributed to the patient's special diet. Serum glutamate was above normal, probably due to the breakdown of glutamine to glutamate. In the aqueous and vitreous the amino acids implicated in MSUD (Valine, Leukine Isoleukine), were within normal range. Glutamate was absent in the vitreous and presented low levels in the aqueous. Glutamate has been reported to play an important role in retinal damage. Elevated glutamate levels have been reported in vitreous specimens from patients subjected to vitrectomy or buckling surgery for RRD. In MSUD, glutamate has been implicated in the pathogenesis of brain damage. Low levels of glutamate have been observed in the cerebellum of experimental MSUD animals, as well as postmortem brain tissue from a child that died of leucine intoxication. The reduction was attributed to the elevation of a-ketoisocaproic which reverses the net direction of nitrogen flow. It could be argued that this could impact on amino acid concentration in aqueous and vitreous fluids. CONCLUSIONS: Although no definite conclusions can be drawn by this extremely rare case, the low vitreous and aqueous levels of Glutamate is an interesting finding. Further studies are needed to provide a better insight in the role of amino acids as neurotransmitters in the human eye in health and disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Beta-thalassemia is a severe genetic blood disorder caused by a mutation in the gene encoding for the beta chains of hemoglobin. Individuals with beta-thalassemia major require regular lifelong Red Blood Cell transfusions to survive. Ocular involvement is quite common and may have serious implications. METHODS: Extensive review of observational studies on beta-thalassemia, to determine the prevalence and spectrum of ocular abnormalities, by clinical examination and multimodal imaging, and to investigate risk factors for their development. RESULTS: Frequency of ocular involvement differs among various studies (41.3-85 %, three studies). Ocular findings in beta-thalassemia may correlate to the disease itself, iron overload or the chelating agents used. Beta-thalassemia ocular manifestations include ocular surface disease, as demonstrated by tear function parameters (two studies). Lens opacities are present in 9.3-44 % (five studies). Lenticular opacities and RPE degeneration correlated positively with use of desferrioxamine and deferriprone respectively (two studies). Ocular fundus abnormalities characteristic of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), including peau d'orange, angioid streaks, pattern dystrophy-like changes, and optic disc drusen are a consistent finding in seven studies. Patients with PXE-like fundus changes were older than patients without these fundus changes (two studies). Age (two studies) and splenectomy (one study) had the strongest association with presence of PXE-like fundus changes. Increased retinal vascular tortuosity independently of the PXE-like fundus changes was found in 11-17.9 % (three studies), which was associated with aspartate amino transferase, hemoglobin and ferritin levels (two studies). Fundus autofluorescence and electrophysiological testing (ERG and EOG) may indicate initial stages or more widespread injury than is suggested by fundus examination (two studies). CONCLUSIONS: Beta-thalassemia may present with various signs, both structural and functional. Pseudoxanthoma elasticum like fundus changes are a frequent finding in patients with b-thalassemia. These changes increase with duration or severity of the disease. Retinal vascular tortuosity may be an additional disease manifestation related to the severity and duration of anemia and independent of the PXE-like syndrome. Patients with long-standing disease need regular ophthalmic checkups because they are at risk of developing PXE-like fundus changes and potentially of subsequent choroidal neovascularization.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare visual field loss and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects in cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) treated with scleral buckle (SB) versus pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and C3F8 injection. METHODS: This was a prospective, comparative interventional study of 50 eyes with primary RRD, treated with PPV (25 eyes) or SB (25 eyes). All measurements took place at least 9 months following successful and uncomplicated surgical treatment. The visual field total deviation (TD) values for preoperative attached and detached areas were calculated and compared separately. The optic nerve head morphology was studied with Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT), and the RNFL using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: The preoperative detached areas demonstrated more affected TD values (in dB) compared to the preoperative attached areas (-6.9 ± 5.2 vs. -4.3 ± 3.3 for the SB group and -9.6 ± 5.2 vs. -7.8 ± 5.1 for the PPV group; p = 0.001) in both groups. The preoperative attached areas of the SB group showed better TD values (calculated mean values) compared to the preoperative attached areas of the PPV group (-4.3 ± 3.3 vs. -7.8 ± 5.1, p = 0.007). The RNFL and HRT values showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: It seems that the preoperative detached retina, despite successful reattachment, suffers permanent damage as a result of the detachment, irrespective of the method of treatment. In the PPV group, the postoperative functionality of the preoperative attached areas was detected to be worse compared to the postoperative functionality of the preoperative attached areas of the SB group. We postulate that this fact could be attributed to an additional traumatizing factor (possibly fluid-air exchange or gas injection) in patients with RRD treated with PPV.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The use of a slow-release dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) for the treatment of post-operative macular edema (ME) in a vitrectomized eye has never been used before. We herein report a case of a 70-year-old woman with post-vitrectomy ME refractory to topical, sub-tenon's and intravitreal steroid administration that responded well to the implantation of a slow-release dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) in a previously vitrectomized eye. METHODS: Interventional case presentation. RESULTS: One week post-implantation, the central retinal thickness was reduced to 383 µm from 640 µm and the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved to 6/36 from counting fingers (CF). At six months' follow-up visit, the improvement of the ME was sustained as indicated by the optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements and the BCVA remained stable. No serious topical or systemic adverse events were observed from the implantation of Ozurdex in the vitrectomized eye. CONCLUSION: The use of Ozurdex in our case resulted in rapid improvement of the post-operative resistant ME. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature demonstrating the use of the slow-release dexamethasone implant (Ozurdex) to treat post-operative ME in a vitrectomized eye.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The full extent of IL-6 involvement in PVR pathophysiology has not yet been comprehensively investigated. The aim of this study was the comparison of the IL-6 effect on MMP expression between SRF and the vitreous in the context of RRD complicated by PVR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-one SRF samples from 31 eyes of 31 consecutive patients suffering from RRD with PVR were collected during treatment by scleral buckling. Twenty-eight vitreous samples from 28 eyes of 28 RRD patients with PVR were collected during surgical management with pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay was employed for the measurement of MMP-1, -3, -8 and TIMP-1 concentrations (in ng/ml). MMP gelatinolytic activity was determined with the use of gelatin zymography analysis using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). RESULTS: Correlation analysis in the SRF revealed a significant correlation between MMP-1/IL6 and RRD duration. Regression analysis in the SRF revealed a significant correlation between the MMP-9/IL-6 and RRD extent. In the same fluid, with respect to PVR grade, ANOVA revealed a significant relationship with the proMMP-2/IL-6, MMP-2/IL6 and TIMP-1/IL-6 ratios. Graphical representation of the results revealed that, between the SRF and vitreous groups, significant peak values were observed for all MMP/IL-6 and TIMP-1/IL-6 ratios included in this study with the exception of the MMP-2/IL-6 ratio. CONCLUSIONS: It appears that there is a significant correlation between the presence of IL-6 and MMP/TIMP ratio in the SRF, indicating that IL-6 may contribute to the increased MMP/TIMP ratio during PVR.
