RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the levels of homocysteine and 8-iso PGF(2a) in football and hockey players before and soon after a match, on the predisposition for development of atherosclerosis. We measured 8-iso-PGF(2a) and homocysteine in 21 football athletes aged 21.8 ± 3.7 years old and 18 hockey athletes 22.2 ± 3.3 years old, respectively. All the athletes presented significant increases in serum homocysteine levels following the match (p = 0.001 for football and p = 0.001 for hockey players) Also a statistically significant increase of 8-iso-PGF(2a) levels was found in hockey and football athletes following the match (p < 0.001 and p = 0.071). Our findings suggest that strenuous exercise such as a football or a hockey match causes a marked increase in serum homocysteine and 8-iso-PGF(2a). Due to the fact that homocysteine and 8-iso-PGF(2a) are contributing to atheromatosis, it may be useful to follow a restoration exercise program that involves mild exercise and to pay special attention to folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 balance during the first 24 h after the match.

Galactic and extragalactic sources produce x-rays that are often absorbed by molecules and atoms in giant molecular clouds (GMCs), which provides valuable information about their composition and physical state. We mimic this phenomenon with a laboratory Z-pinch x-ray source, which is impinged on neutral molecular gas. This technique produces a soft x-ray pseudocontinuum using a pulsed-current generator. The absorbing gas is injected from a 1-cm-long planar gas-puff without any window or vessel along the line of sight. An x-ray spectrometer with a resolving power of λ/Δλ∼420, comparable to that of astrophysical space instruments, records the absorbed spectra. This resolution clearly resolves the molecular lines from the atomic lines, thus motivating the search for a molecular signature in astrophysical x-ray spectra. The experimental setup enables different gas compositions and column densities. K-shell spectra of CO_{2}, N_{2}, and O_{2} reveal a plethora of absorption lines and photoelectric edges measured at molecular column densities between ∼10^{16} and 10^{18} cm^{-2} typical of GMCs. We find that the population of excited states, contributing to the edge, increases with gas density.

In the field of pulse-power, there has always been an interest on small and medium size pulsed-current generators (≤2 MA) which are affordable and of low maintenance. We developed the GLIDER, a compact and modular generator, that drives a gas-puff z-pinch load as a soft x-ray source (0.1-1 keV) for laboratory astrophysics absorption experiments. It comprises 48 bricks, tightly packed in a 1.7 m × 3.5 m × 0.8 m transformer oil container. Its compactness and reliability was enabled owing to unique multilayered oil-soaked insulators, and more than 100 post-hole convolutes. Its stripline includes interchangeable tiles for ease of construction and maintenance. Six triggering units enable current pulse shaping. The GLIDER was tested up to ±60 kV (34 kJ) and produced 2 MA in 450 ns rise time on a 5 nH load. We present grating spectra of K-shell absorption of neutral O and N proving the experimental concept and demonstrating column density and ionization measurements.

AIM: The aim of the present investigation was to determine the greater rate of lactate removal after a maximal rowing test using different intensities during active recovery. METHODS: Thirty elite male rowers performed a simulated incremental exercise protocol on rowing ergometer to determine their maximal oxygen uptake and they divided into three equal sized group according to the type of the recovery that followed the assessment. The first group (N.=10) subjected to 20 min of passive recovery, while the second (N.=10) and the third (N.=10) groups performed 20 min of active recovery using the 25% and the 50% of each individual's maximal power output, respectively. During the recovery period, every two min were performed measurements for the assessment of blood lactate, oxygen consumption and heart rate (HR). RESULTS: It was found that after 10 min of active recovery at 50% and 25% of maximal power output lactate concentration reduced by 43% and 15%, respectively, while during passive recovery lactate concentration found to be slightly elevated by 1%. It was also found that during recovery period, HR, oxygen consumption and pulmonary ventilation was significant elevated at higher exercise intensity compared to lower exercise intensity and passive recovery. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that in elite male rowers the active recovery provided higher rate of lactate removal compared to passive recovery. Moreover, active recovery at 50% of maximal power output had better results in lactate clearance compared to the active recovery of lower intensity (25% of maximal power output).
