Frequency relationship of mechanical impedance of human mastoid has been recorded within the frequency range of 125-15 000 Hz. The technique of measuring mechanical impedance has been described and its error evaluated. From the results obtained equivalent parameters of the mechanical system imitating acoustic properties of human mastoid are calculated. These parameters can serve as the basis for developing the device artificial mastoid.

A total of 310 sera from HIV-1 infected patients detected in Moscow were serologically typed using 10 V3-imitating synthetic peptides. Subtype B virus is the most prevalent in Moscow (66.7%), serotype A/C ranks second (21.3%).

Morbidity in HIV infection and tuberculosis in persons having these two infections in association was analyzed. According to the data for the end of the first quarter of 1997 the presence of association of HIV infection with tuberculosis was found in 91 patients. In 70.3% of cases HIV infection was contacted before the appearance of tuberculosis and in 18.7% of cases, after it; in 11% of cases the order of appearance of these two diseases could not be established. The study revealed that the markedness of the clinical picture of tuberculosis was determined by the progress of HIV infection.

The application aspects of the EU 93/42 Directive, i.e. a fundamental document in design, elaboration, production, sale and maintenance of medical devices are detailed.

It is suggested that the appraisal of acoustic properties of auscultation instruments should be done by an expert-physician by following the most outstanding auscultative characteristics. A procedure for medical appraisal of acoustic properties is proposed. The BF-1 sthetophonendoscope manufactured by the Nizhny-Tagil medical instruments plant is recommended to serve as a model one.
