PURPOSE: Verify if the use of locking plates in displaced three- and four-part proximal humerus fractures has meant an improvement even in patients over 70 years of age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed surgery with locking plate fixation in 56 consecutive patients with three- and four-part proximal humerus fractures according to Neer's classification between 1/1/15 and 12/31/20 at our Hospital. Patient satisfaction, quality of life, functionality and radiological variables, as well as the comparison between patients older and younger than 70 years were the main outcomes. Likewise, factors and complications that may have influenced these variables were analyzed as secondary outcomes. The analysis of all these variables was performed after a minimum follow-up time of 24 months after surgery. RESULTS: 51 patients (92%) ended up satisfied or very satisfied according to the SF-36 test and with no disability or mild disability according to the DASH Score questionnaire. 46 patients (82%) obtained a satisfactory or excellent result according to the Neer scale modified by Cofield and 38 (68%) a good or excellent function according to the Constant Murley questionnaire. In 47 cases (84%) good radiological alignment was observed. Complications occurred in 20 patients (36%). The complications and the results of the SF-36, DASH Score, Neer scale modified by Cofield and Constant Murley tests depended on the radiological alignment (p = 0.009, p = 0.006, p = 0.025, p = 0.0008 and p = 0.0004). There were 37 patients younger than 70 years and 19 older than 70 years with no statistically significant differences when comparing the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that satisfactory results can be obtained with osteosynthesis with locking plates in displaced proximal humerus fractures even in patients older than 70 years of age. We studied the magnetic properties of a glass-covered amorphous microwire that was stress-annealed at temperatures distributed along the microwire length. The Sixtus-Tonks, Kerr effect microscopy and magnetic impedance techniques have been applied. There was a transformation of the magnetic structure across the zones subjected to annealing at different temperatures. The annealing temperature distribution induces the graded magnetic anisotropy in the studied sample. The variety of the surface domain structures depending on the longitudinal location has been discovered. Spiral, circular, curved, elliptic and longitudinal domain structures coexist and replace each other in the process of magnetization reversal. The analysis of the obtained results was carried out based on the calculations of the magnetic structure, assuming the distribution of internal stresses.

In this article, we study the effect of annealing temperature and applied stress on the magnetic properties of Fe71.80B13.27Si11.02Nb2.99Ni0.92 and Co65.34Si12.00B10.20Cr8.48Fe3.90Mo0.08 microwires. An anomalous behavior of the coercive field is observed while applying stress, indicating nontrivial changes in the microwire magnetic anisotropy. The effect of applied stimuli on the magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction constant in both microwires is also discussed.

As-prepared Fe-rich microwires with perfectly rectangular hysteresis loops present magnetization reversal through fast domain wall propagation, while the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect in Fe-rich microwires is rather low. However, the lower cost of Fe-rich microwires makes them attractive for magnetic sensors applications. We studied the effect of conventional (furnace) annealing and Joule heating on magnetic-propertied domain wall (DW) dynamics and the GMI effect in two Fe microwires with different geometries. We observed that magnetic softness, GMI effect and domain wall (DW) dynamics can be substantially improved by appropriate annealing. Observed experimental results are discussed considering the counterbalance between the internal stresses relaxation and induced magnetic anisotropy associated with the presence of an Oersted magnetic field during Joule heating.

Supervised learning requires the accurate labeling of instances, usually provided by an expert. Crowdsourcing platforms offer a practical and cost-effective alternative for large datasets when individual annotation is impractical. In addition, these platforms gather labels from multiple labelers. Still, traditional multiple-annotator methods must account for the varying levels of expertise and the noise introduced by unreliable outputs, resulting in decreased performance. In addition, they assume a homogeneous behavior of the labelers across the input feature space, and independence constraints are imposed on outputs. We propose a Generalized Cross-Entropy-based framework using Chained Deep Learning (GCECDL) to code each annotator's non-stationary patterns regarding the input space while preserving the inter-dependencies among experts through a chained deep learning approach. Experimental results devoted to multiple-annotator classification tasks on several well-known datasets demonstrate that our GCECDL can achieve robust predictive properties, outperforming state-of-the-art algorithms by combining the power of deep learning with a noise-robust loss function to deal with noisy labels. Moreover, network self-regularization is achieved by estimating each labeler's reliability within the chained approach. Lastly, visual inspection and relevance analysis experiments are conducted to reveal the non-stationary coding of our method. In a nutshell, GCEDL weights reliable labelers as a function of each input sample and achieves suitable discrimination performance with preserved interpretability regarding each annotator's trustworthiness estimation.

Implant-related infections are a worldwide issue that is considered very challenging. Conventional therapies commonly end up failing; thus, new solutions are being investigated to overcome this problem. The in situ delivery of the drug at the implant site appears to be more sufficient compared to systemic antibiotic therapy. In this study, we manufactured porous zirconia scaffolds using the foam replication method. To improve their overall bioactivity, they were coated with a calcium phosphate (CaP) layer containing antibiotic-loaded degradable polymer nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by the double emulsion method to achieve the antibacterial effect additionally. Encapsulation efficiency (EE) and drug loading (DL) were superior and were equal to 99.9 ± 0.1% and 9.1 ± 0.1%, respectively. Scaffolds were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy, and their porosity was evaluated. The porosity of investigated samples was over 90% and resembled the microstructure of spongy bone. Furthermore, we investigated the cytocompatibility with osteoblast-like MG-63 cells and antimicrobial properties with Staphylococcus aureus. Scaffolds coated with a CaP layer were found non-toxic for MG-63 cells. Moreover, the presence of antibiotic-loaded nanoparticles had no significant influence on cell viability, and the obtained scaffolds inhibited bacteria growth. Provided processes of fabrication of highly porous zirconia scaffolds and surface functionalization allow minimizing the risk of implant-related infection.

J Strength Cond Res 36(3): 827-831, 2022-Short hurdling races are sprint races in which athletes must also clear 10 hurdles. Assessing the force-velocity (F-V) profile in sprinting has been found useful for implementing individualized training programs and determining the mechanical effectiveness in force application. This study therefore compared the sprint mechanical F-V profile between flat and hurdle conditions to distinguish which mechanical capacity (i.e., maximum force [F0], maximum velocity [V0], or maximum power [Pmax]) is required to optimize performance in hurdling races. Twenty-two athletes (10 men and 12 women, aged: 22.4 ± 3.6 years old) competing at the national and elite performance levels conducted 2 maximal sprints of 40 m in both flat and hurdle conditions. F0, V0, FVslope, Pmax, and decrease and maximal ratio of horizontal force (DRF and RFpeak, respectively) were assessed for each condition. A higher F0 (effect size [ES] = 1.69) and a lower V0 (ES = 2.08), DRF (ES = 3.15) and RFpeak (ES = 1.31) were found in the hurdle condition than in the flat condition. No significant differences were observed between conditions for Pmax (ES = 0.01). These results support the potential of using the F-V profile to monitor sprint mechanics to optimize specific and individualized sprint training programs for hurdlers and sprinters. Coaches of hurdlers should thus consider implementing in their training routines exercises that were found to be effective on the development of F0, such as heavy load resisted sprints.

MXenes attract tremendous research efforts since their discovery in 2011 due to their unique physical and chemical properties, allowing for application in various fields. One of them is electrochemical energy storage due to their pseudocapacitive (=redox) behavior, high electronic conductivity, and charge storage versatility regarding the cationic species (e.g., Li+ ). MXenes typically display stable charge/discharge cycling behavior over hundreds of cycles in numerous electrolytes, however, a drastic loss of reversible capacity is detectable during the initial cycles. Furthermore, an electrochemical "activation" is also reported in the literature, especially for free-standing electrodes. Here, these electrochemical phenomena are investigated by electrochemical and analytical means to decipher the responsible mechanism by comparing few-layered and multi-layered Ti3 C2 Tx . A change in the pseudocapacitive behavior of MXenes during cycling can be explained by in situ X-ray diffraction studies, revealing solvent co-intercalation in the first cycle for the morphologically different MXenes. This co-intercalation is responsible for the capacity decay detected in the first cycles and is also responsible for the ongoing "activation" occurring in later cycles.

The COVID-19 pandemic has suddenly modified the lifestyle of a large portion of the population around the world. This pandemic is also the first one in decades that has severely impacted many countries of the Global North. Governments have had to adopt wide-scope and desperate measures to face the abnormal situation and to reduce the stress of their health care systems. These measures have been based on reducing the physical-social interaction and mobility (closing schools and some economic activities, or fostering telework, among others), increasing the physical distance between people, and recommending washing hands frequently and wearing masks. Thus, the COVID-19 may change many habits of people and the ways we interact with others after the current pandemic. It would also imply changes in mobility habits. Many questions arise about the willingness and acceptability of changes, and who would have to impulse them and how. This paper aims to study and understand individuals' acceptability towards a set of generic measures related to urban mobility in Spain, one of the countries most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, we conducted an online survey during the lockdown in Spring (2020). More than 75% of respondents would accept restrictions on car use after the return to normal, and more than 90% agree on increasing the space for pedestrians and cyclists on streets. Furthermore, 75% of respondents would change the primary transport mode towards a more sustainable transport mode if it would decrease the incidence or severity of the COVID-19. These results show that the respondents are overall in favor of a new urban hierarchy that gives more importance to the most sustainable modes, reducing the public space devoted to the car, which means the possibility of turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity to make Spanish cities more sustainable.

Transition metal carbides, known as MXenes, are generated via the selective etching of "A" layers from their layered, ternary parent compounds, MAX phases, where M corresponds to early d-transition metal, A being a main group sp-element from either Group 13 or 14 and carbon or nitrogen being denoted by X. MXenes are being recognized as a new and uprising class of 2D materials with extraordinary physical and electrochemical properties. The huge specific surface area and outstanding electrical conductivity of MXenes, make them ideal candidates for sensing and energy applications. Herein, we demonstrated the successful incorporation of pristine MXene, Ti3C2 produced via HF etching and subsequent delamination with TBAOH, as a transducer platform toward the development of a second generation electrochemical glucose biosensor. Chronoamperometric studies demonstrate that the proposed biosensing system exhibits high selectivity and excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of glucose, spanning over wide linear ranges of 50-27 750 µM and possess a low limit of detection of 23.0 µM. The findings reported in this study conceptually proves the probable applications of pristine MXenes toward the field of biosensors and pave ways for the future developments of highly selective and sensitive electrochemical biosensors for biomedical and food sampling applications.

To prevent spontaneous oxidation during the high-temperature synthesis of non-oxide ceramics, an inert atmosphere is conventionally required1,2. This, however, results in high energy demand and high production costs. Here, we present a process for the synthesis and consolidation of oxidation-prone materials, the 'molten salt shielded synthesis/sintering' process (MS3), which uses molten salts as a reaction medium and also to protect the ceramic powders from oxidation during high-temperature processing in air. Synthesis temperatures are also reduced, and the final product is a highly pure, fine and loose powder that does not require additional milling steps. MS3 has been used for the synthesis of different ternary transition metal compounds (MAX phases, such as Ti3SiC23, Ti2AlN4, MoAlB5), binary carbides (TiC) and for the sintering of titanium. The availability of high-quality powders, combined with energy and cost savings, may remove one of the bottlenecks for the industrial application of these materials.

The emergence of different styles of Contemporary concert music in the 20th century led to a marked modification of the foundations built on previous styles. This work investigates whether these modifications, which include procedures and technical resources different to those used in the interpretation of previous musical styles, require different encephalic controls to those used in tonal music and if the experience of the musician in these styles influences them. Functional magnetic resonance images of encephalic regions from 13 professional cellists while interpreting Baroque and Contemporary excerpts inside an MRI scanner were acquired. Activation and connectivity encephalic maps show common cortical motor and sensorial regions (Precentral, Postcentral and Supramarginal Gyri) in both interpretation styles, but with different hemispheric intensity levels. However, certain auditory and motor regions only activate during Baroque. Connectivity maps show some exclusive seed-regions; thus, the Heschl's and Superior Frontal Gyri, Planum-Temporal and Caudate appear as prominent seeds when playing Baroque, whereas when playing Contemporary, the main seeds appear in the Cerebellar-Vermis, Insular cortex and Parietal Operculum. The discrepancies found are attributed to different cognitive, sensory and motor demands underlying the musical interpretation of each style, as well as to the musicians' learning of and training in these styles.

Magnetic microwires can present excellent soft magnetic properties and a giant magnetoimpedance effect. In this paper, we present our last results on the effect of postprocessing allowing optimization of the magnetoimpedance effect in Co-rich microwires suitable for magnetic microsensor applications. Giant magnetoimpedance effect improvement was achieved either by annealing or stress-annealing. Annealed Co-rich presents rectangular hysteresis loops. However, an improvement in magnetoimpedance ratio is observed at fairly high annealing temperatures over a wide frequency range. Application of stress during annealing at moderate values of annealing temperatures and stress allows for a remarkable decrease in coercivity and increase in squareness ratio and further giant magnetoimpedance effect improvement. Stress-annealing, carried out at sufficiently high temperatures and/or stress allowed induction of transverse magnetic anisotropy, as well as magnetoimpedance effect improvement. Enhanced magnetoimpedance ratio values for annealed and stress-annealed samples and frequency dependence of the magnetoimpedance are discussed in terms of the radial distribution of the magnetic anisotropy. Accordingly, we demonstrated that the giant magnetoimpedance effect of Co-rich microwires can be tailored by controlling the magnetic anisotropy of Co-rich microwires, using appropriate thermal treatment.

Lithium diffusion in LiMn2O4 pellets is studied by means of isotope exchange and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). A 6Li-enriched film deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) on a dense LiMn2O4 pellet with natural abundance of lithium isotopes is used to study the tracer diffusion of lithium. The measured profiles are analyzed by numerical models describing the 6Li tracer diffusion from the film into the pellet. Experiments in the Harrison type B regime of diffusion kinetics allow for the distinction and simultaneous determination of bulk and grain boundary diffusion coefficients. Changing the experimental conditions to reach Harrison type A behavior yields effective diffusion coefficients for lithium tracer diffusion in LiMn2O4. Activation energies for bulk and grain boundary diffusion were obtained from experiments at different temperatures. Our values are critically compared to previous studies.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) are proving to be a promising platform design for multidisciplinary autonomous operability with a wide range of applications in marine ecology and geoscience. Here, two novel contributions towards increasing the autonomous navigation capability of a new AUV prototype (the Guanay II) as a mix between a propelled vehicle and a glider are presented. Firstly, a vectorial propulsion system has been designed to provide full vehicle maneuverability in both horizontal and vertical planes. Furthermore, two controllers have been designed, based on fuzzy controls, to provide the vehicle with autonomous navigation capabilities. Due to the decoupled system propriety, the controllers in the horizontal plane have been designed separately from the vertical plane. This class of non-linear controllers has been used to interpret linguistic laws into different zones of functionality. This method provided good performance, used as interpolation between different rules or linear controls. Both improvements have been validated through simulations and field tests, displaying good performance results. Finally, the conclusion of this work is that the Guanay II AUV has a solid controller to perform autonomous navigation and carry out vertical immersions.

Detailed assessment of exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) and intermediate frequency (IF) fields is essential in order to conduct informative epidemiological studies of the health effects from exposure to these fields. There is limited information available regarding ELF electric fields and on both magnetic and electric field exposures of children in the IF range. The aim of this study was to characterize ELF and IF exposure of children in the Spanish INMA cohort. A combination of spot and fixed measurements was carried out in 104 homes, 26 schools and their playgrounds and 105 parks. Low levels of ELF magnetic fields (ELF-MF) were observed (with the highest 24-h time-weighted average (TWA) exposure being 0.15µT in one home). The interquartile range (IQR) of ELF electric fields (ELF-EF) ranged from 1 to 15V/m indoors and from 0.3 to 1.1V/m outdoors and a maximum value observed was 55.5V/m in one school playground. IQR ranges for IF magnetic and electric fields were between 0.02 and 0.23µT and 0.2 and 0.5V/m respectively and maximum values were 0.03µT and 1.51V/m in homes. Correlations between magnetic and electric fields were weak for ELF (Spearman 0.04-0.36 in different settings) and moderate for IF (between 0.28 and 0.75). Children of INMA-Gipuzkoa cohort were exposed to very low levels of ELF-MF in all settings and to similar levels of ELF-EF compared to the range of previously reported levels, although somewhat higher exposures occurred at home. Children enrolled to our study were similarly exposed to IF in all settings.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of the association between exposure to electromagnetic fields of non-ionising radiation (EMF-NIR) and health in children and adolescents is hindered by the limited availability of data, mainly due to the difficulties on the exposure assessment. This study protocol describes the methodologies used for characterising exposure of children to EMF-NIR in the INMA (INfancia y Medio Ambiente- Environment and Childhood) Project, a prospective cohort study. METHODS/DESIGN: Indirect (proximity to emission sources, questionnaires on sources use and geospatial propagation models) and direct methods (spot and fixed longer-term measurements and personal measurements) were conducted in order to assess exposure levels of study participants aged between 7 and 18 years old. The methodology used varies depending on the frequency of the EMF-NIR and the environment (homes, schools and parks). Questionnaires assessed the use of sources contributing both to Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) and Radiofrequency (RF) exposure levels. Geospatial propagation models (NISMap) are implemented and validated for environmental outdoor sources of RFs using spot measurements. Spot and fixed longer-term ELF and RF measurements were done in the environments where children spend most of the time. Moreover, personal measurements were taken in order to assess individual exposure to RF. The exposure data are used to explore their relationships with proximity and/or use of EMF-NIR sources. DISCUSSION: Characterisation of the EMF-NIR exposure by this combination of methods is intended to overcome problems encountered in other research. The assessment of exposure of INMA cohort children and adolescents living in different regions of Spain to the full frequency range of EMF-NIR extends the characterisation of environmental exposures in this cohort. Together with other data obtained in the project, on socioeconomic and family characteristics and development of the children and adolescents, this will enable to evaluate the complex interaction between health outcomes in children and adolescents and the various environmental factors that surround them.

The retention of nanocrystallinity in dense ceramic materials is still a challenge, even with the application of external pressure during sintering. The compaction behavior of high purity and acetate enriched zinc oxide (ZnO) nano-powders was investigated. It was found that acetate in combination with water plays a key role during the compaction into green bodies at moderate temperatures. Application of constant pressure resulted in a homogeneous green body with superior packing density (86% of theoretical value) at moderate temperature (85 °C) in the presence of water. In contrast, no improvement in density could be achieved if pure ZnO powder was used. This compaction behavior offers superior packing of the particles, resulting in a high relative density of the consolidated compact with negligible coarsening. Dissolution accompanying creep diffusion based matter transport is suggested to strongly support reorientation of ZnO particles towards densities beyond the theoretical limit for packing of ideal monosized spheres. Finally, the sintering trajectory reveals that grain growth is retarded compared to conventional processing up to 90% of theoretical density. Moreover, nearly no radial shrinkage was observed after sinter-forging for bodies performed with this advanced processing method.

OBJECTIVES: Preoperative planning of deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps has become increasingly important in radiology services as multidetector CT angiography (CTA) has been proven to be the technique of choice. We aim to optimise the process, checking the value of the "Navarra criteria," assessing radiological and surgical concordance. METHODS: Preoperative CTA was obtained in 105 DIEP flaps involving 101 women (mean age 49.1 years). A main perforator pedicle and an alternative were chosen, applying a modification of the "Navarra criteria," assessing the correlation between the main perforator chosen by the radiologist and the one that was ultimately used to perform the flap using the Kappa index. RESULTS: In 100 of the 105 DIEP flaps (95.2%), the perforator pedicles chosen were ultimately used to raise the flap. Four of the perforator pedicles that were not used were dismissed due to avoidable errors in the radiological approach. Concordance was very high, with a Kappa index of 0.93 (95% CI: 0.87-0.99). CT room time was less than 12 minutes, and reading time was 10 minutes. CONCLUSIONS: The application of the "Navarra criteria" in preoperative planning of DIEP flaps improves radiological and surgical concordance as well as the reading process. KEY POINTS: DIEP flap is one of the best techniques for breast reconstruction. Preoperative planning is essential in DIEP flaps. CTA is the best option for the preoperative planning of DIEP flaps. "Navarra criteria" allow radiologists to choose the best perforator to form flaps. Modified "Navarra criteria" improves radiological and surgical concordance.

RESUMO

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is an energy-efficient method for nitrogen removal that opens the possibility for energy-neutral wastewater treatment. Research on anammox over the past decade has primarily focused on its implementation in domestic wastewater treatment. However, emerging studies are now expanding its use to novel biotechnological applications and wastewater treatment processes. This review highlights recent advances in the anammox field that aim to overcome conventional bottlenecks, and explores novel and niche-specific applications of the anammox process. Despite the promising results and potential of these advances, challenges persist for their real-world implementation. This underscores the need for a transition from laboratory achievements to practical, scalable solutions for wastewater treatment which mark the next crucial phase in the evolution of anammox research.
