Ion adsorption at solid-water interfaces is crucial for many electrochemical processes involving aqueous electrolytes including energy storage, electrochemical separations, and electrocatalysis. However, the impact of the hydronium (H3O+) and hydroxide (OH-) ions on the ion adsorption and surface charge distributions remains poorly understood. Many fundamental studies of supercapacitors focus on non-aqueous electrolytes to avoid addressing the role of functional groups and electrolyte pH in altering ion uptake. Achieving microscopic level characterization of interfacial mixed ion adsorption is particularly challenging due to the complex ion dynamics, disordered structures, and hierarchical porosity of the carbon electrodes. This work addresses these challenges starting with pH measurements to quantify the adsorbed H3O+ concentrations, which reveal the basic nature of the activated carbon YP-50F commonly used in supercapacitors. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is used to study the uptake of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (LiTFSI) aqueous electrolyte in the YP-50F carbon across the full pH range. The NMR data analysis highlights the importance of including the fast ion-exchange processes for accurate quantification of the adsorbed ions. Under acidic conditions, more TFSI- ions are adsorbed in the carbon pores than Li+ ions, with charge compensation also occurring via H3O+ adsorption. Under neutral and basic conditions, when the carbon's surface charge is close to zero, the Li+ and TFSI- ions exhibit similar but lower affinities toward the carbon pores. Our experimental approach and evidence of H3O+ uptake in pores provide a methodology to relate the local structure to the function and performance in a wide range of materials for energy applications and beyond.

The demand for electric vehicles with extended ranges has created a renaissance of interest in replacing the common metal-ion with higher energy-density metal-anode batteries. However, the potential battery safety issues associated with lithium metal must be addressed to enable lithium metal battery chemistries. A considerable performance gap between lithium (Li) symmetric cells and practical Li batteries motivated us to explore the correlation between the shape of voltage traces and degradation. We coupled impedance spectroscopy and operando NMR and used the new approach to show that transient (i.e., soft) shorts form in realistic conditions for battery applications; however, they are typically overlooked, as their electrochemical signatures are often not distinct. The typical rectangular-shaped voltage trace, widely considered ideal, was proven, under the conditions studied here, to be a result of soft shorts. Recoverable soft-shorted cells were demonstrated during a symmetric cell polarisation experiment, defining a new type of critical current density: the current density at which the soft shorts are not reversible. Moreover, we demonstrated that soft shorts, detected via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and validated via operando NMR, are predictive towards the formation of hard shorts, showing the potential use of EIS as a relatively low-cost and non-destructive method for early detection of catastrophic shorts and battery failure while demonstrating the strength of operando NMR as a research tool for metal plating in lithium batteries.

PURPOSE: The aim was to investigate sexual function and fertility in female adults operated on for anorectal malformations (ARM). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study including female adult patients treated for ARM at our institution between 1994 and 2003. Sexual function in females was assessed using the Profile of Sexual Function (PFSF). Additional questions regarding fertility were answered by the participants. Patient characteristics were retrospectively retrieved from the medical records and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Sexual function outcomes were compared to a control group from a previously published group of females. Composite outcome analysis was performed using previously published data to determine the potential impact of bowel function and health-related quality of life on sexual function. The ethics review authorities approved the study. RESULTS: A total of 14 of 30 (46.7%) females responded to the questionnaires and had a mean age of 21.1 years (range 18-26). No association was found between PFSF and age or bowel function (Bowel Function Score), however, a strong correlation was found between PFSF and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with a Spearman correlation of ρ 0.82 (p = 0.0011). The general satisfaction question was strongly associated with their total PFSF score (ρ = 0.71, p = 0.0092). Except for the "desire" item, the females in this cohort did not have significantly worse sexual function than the control population(p = 0.015). Ten of fourteen (71.4%) females had had their sexual debut at a mean age of 16.3 years and two of these women (20%) have been pregnant. All females had had menarche at a mean age of 12.7 years. CONCLUSION: Sexual function in adult females was comparable to healthy controls except for the "desire" item where the cohort reported poorer outcomes. The cohort's sexual function had a direct association with their reported HRQoL where individuals with worse HRQoL also reported poorer sexual function. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

PURPOSE: There is a knowledge gap regarding long-term outcomes for males undergoing surgery for an anorectal malformation (ARM). The purpose of this study was to investigate bowel function, bladder function, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in male patients with an anorectal malformation. METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study included males treated for ARM at our institution between 1994 and 2017. Bowel function was assessed with bowel function score (BFS) while urinary tract function was assessed with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) questionnaires. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was investigated using age-relevant questionnaires (KIDSCREEN and PGWBI). Patient characteristics were retrospectively collected from the medical records and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Functional outcomes were compared with gender and age-matched controls while HRQoL was compared to normative data. The study was approved by ethics review authorities. RESULTS: A total of 58 (44.6%) of 130 males responded to the questionnaires. Regarding bowel function, 24 (42.1%) of 57 patients and 81 (95.3%) of 85 controls, respectively, reported a well-preserved bowel function represented by a BFS ≥ 17 (p < 0.001). Soiling issues and 'feels urge' items improved significantly with age. In a linear regression model, BFS increased significantly with age. For most parameters, the proportion of ARM patients with lower urinary tract symptoms was larger, though not significantly, compared to the controls. However, straining and stress incontinence were reported significantly more often by ARM patients. In patients and controls, voiding outcomes in terms of prevalence of having symptoms and the number of cumulative symptoms drop with increasing age. Children and adults reported similar or, in some domains, better HRQoL outcomes when compared to normative European data. CONCLUSION: Bowel function is impaired in male patients with ARM but significantly improves with age. Urinary tract function was affected, but overall comparable to the controls. HRQoL was unaffected. No significant association between the studied outcomes could be shown. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, surgical treatment of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) was centralized from four to two pediatric surgery centers 1st of July 2018. In adults, centralization of surgical care for complex or rare diseases seems to improve quality of care. There is little evidence supporting centralization of pediatric surgical care. The aim of this study was to assess surgical management and postoperative outcome in HSCR patients following centralization of care. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed data of patients with HSCR that had undergone pull-through at a pediatric surgery center in Sweden from 1st of July 2013 to 30th of June 2023. Patients managed from 1st of July 2013 to 30th of June 2018 (before centralization) were compared with patients managed from 1st of July 2018 to 30th of June 2023 (after centralization) regarding surgical treatment, unplanned procedures under general anesthesia or readmissions up to 90 days after pull-through as well as complications classified according to Clavien-Madadi up to 30 days after pull-through. RESULTS: In the 5-year period prior to centralization, 114 individuals from 4 treating centers were included and compared to 83 patients from 2 treating centers in the second period. There was no difference regarding age at pull-through or proportion of patients with a stoma prior to pull-through. An increase of laparoscopically assisted endorectal pull-through (8.8% to 39.8%) was observed (p < 0.001). No significant differences were seen in postoperative hospital stay, unplanned procedures under general anesthesia, or readmissions up to 90 days after pull-through. There was no difference in severe complications (Clavien-Madadi ≥ 3); however, HAEC treated with antibiotics increased following centralization (10.5-24.1%; p = 0.018). CONCLUSION: Centralization of care for HSCR does not seem to delay time to pull-through nor reduce severe complications, unplanned procedures under general anesthesia or readmissions up to 90 days after pull-through. The increased HAEC rate may be due to increased awareness of mild HAEC. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

INTRODUCTION: The bacterial genus Bacillus is widely distributed environmentally and is usually considered a low-virulence organism, except for B. anthracis. A blood culture positive for Bacillus is often looked at as contamination. Nevertheless, B. cereus can cause invasive infections in humans and produces harmful toxins. The epidemiology of these infections remains poorly studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All possible invasive infections caused by Bacillus during 2006-2018 at Landspitali University Hospital were identified from culture results. Clinical information was used to evaluate if there was a possible infection or confirmed infection. Here, the authors propose and use clinical criteria to categorize each case as contamination, possible infection or confirmed infection. The incidence of possible or confirmed infections was calculated using hospital catchment population data. RESULTS: Positive cultures of Bacillus sp. from sterile sites during 2006-2018 were identified from 126 patients; blood (116), synovial fluid (8) and cerebrospinal fluid (2). In total, 26 cases were confirmed infection (20.6%), 10 possible infection (7.9%) and 90 contamination (71.4%). The incidence was 1.4 cases/100.000 inhabitants/year. Injection drug use was a risk factor among 11/26 patients with confirmed infection. The most common clinical presentation was sepsis. In this study, Bacillus was resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics in 92% of confirmed infections and 66% of the cases considered contamination (p=0.02). CONCLUSION: Positive blood cultures of Bacillus sp. should be taken seriously, especially among patients with injection drug use, malignancy or immunocompromised state. It is important to draw two sets of blood cultures if there is a real suspicion of an infection to establish diagnosis and avoid unnecessary antibiotic therapy.

AIM: To assess the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in patients with anorectal malformations compared to controls. METHODS: This was a population-based cohort study including all patients born in Sweden 1997-2012 with anorectal malformation in the Swedish National Patient Register and five matched controls per patient. Anorectal malformation was the exposure. All individuals were evaluated for the outcomes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or autism spectrum disorder in the National Patient Register. Data on drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were retrieved from the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register and used as proxy for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Analyses were adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: Five hundred and fifteen patients with anorectal malformations and 2560 controls were included. Patients with anorectal malformation had a higher risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (OR 3.01 (95% CI, 1.83-4.95)) and autism spectrum disorders (OR 3.07 (95% CI, 1.62-5.79)) compared to the controls. Significantly more patients with anorectal malformation had been prescribed medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder compared to controls (OR 2.26 (95% CI 1.33-3.85)). CONCLUSION: Patients with anorectal malformations have a higher risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorders than controls.

Capacity retention in lithium metal batteries needs to be improved if they are to be commercially viable, the low cycling stability and Li corrosion during storage of lithium metal batteries being even more problematic when there is no excess lithium in the cell. Herein, we develop in situ NMR metrology to study "anode-free" lithium metal batteries where lithium is plated directly onto a bare copper current collector from a LiFePO4 cathode. The methodology allows inactive or "dead lithium" formation during plating and stripping of lithium in a full-cell lithium metal battery to be tracked: dead lithium and SEI formation can be quantified by NMR and their relative rates of formation are here compared in carbonate and ether-electrolytes. Little-to-no dead Li was observed when FEC is used as an additive. The bulk magnetic susceptibility effects arising from the paramagnetic lithium metal were used to distinguish between different surface coverages of lithium deposits. The amount of lithium metal was monitored during rest periods, and lithium metal dissolution (corrosion) was observed in all electrolytes, even during the periods when the battery is not in use, i.e., when no current is flowing, demonstrating that dissolution of lithium remains a critical issue for lithium metal batteries. The high rate of corrosion is attributed to SEI formation on both lithium metal and copper (and Cu+, Cu2+ reduction). Strategies to mitigate the corrosion are explored, the work demonstrating that both polymer coatings and the modification of the copper surface chemistry help to stabilize the lithium metal surface.

Introduction: Atrioventricular (AV) node conduction disturbances are common following surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), and in some cases the patient needs a permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation before discharge from hospital. Little is known about the long-term need for PPM and the PPM dependency of these individuals. We determined the incidence of PPM implantation before and after discharge in SAVR patients. Methods: We studied 557 consecutive patients who underwent SAVR for aortic stenosis in Iceland between 2002 and 2016. Timing and indication for PPM were registered, with a new concept, ventricular pacing proportion (VPP), defined as ventricular pacing ≥90% of the time, being used to approximate pacemaker dependency. The median follow-up time was 73 months. We plotted the cumulative incidence of pacemaker implantation, treating death as a competing risk. Results: Of the 557 patients, 22 (3.9%) received PPM in the first 30 days after surgery, most commonly for complete AV block (n = 14) or symptomatic bradycardia (n = 8); Thirty-eight other patients (6.8%) had a PPM implanted >30 days postoperatively, at a median of 43 months after surgery (range 0â181), most often for AV block (n = 13) or sick-sinus syndrome (n = 10). The cumulative incidence of PPM implantation at 1, 5, and 10 years postoperatively was 5.0%, 9.2%, and 12.3%, respectively. During follow-up, 45.0% of the 60 patients had VPP ≥90%. Conclusion: The cumulative incidence of permanent pacemaker implantation following SAVR was about 12% at 10 years, with every other patient having VPP ≥90% during follow-up. This suggests that AV node conduction disturbances extend significantly beyond the perioperative period.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine changes in outcomes after surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for aortic stenosis (AS) in Iceland over a 15-year period. METHODS: We included 587 patients who underwent SAVR for AS in Iceland during the period 2002-2016, with a total follow-up of 3245 patient-years. Short-term and long-term outcomes, 30-day mortality, and long-term survival (Kaplan-Meier) were analyzed. Univariate linear regression and univariate and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed on preoperative and perioperative variables. Poisson regression analysis was used to evaluate changes in rates of short-term outcomes. RESULTS: Mean age was 71 years, 65.1% were males, and mean EuroSCORE II was 3.9. Mean preoperative aortic valve area increased significantly (0.013 cm2 /year; P < .001) and mean aortic cross-clamp time declined (108 minutes, 2.8 min/year; P < .001). The rate of complications decreased, including new-onset atrial fibrillation (60.9% overall, decreased by 3.1%/year, P = .02), acute kidney injury (17.1%, 7.6%/year, P < .001), and reoperation for bleeding (12.5%, 6.3%/year, P = .02). Operative mortality did not change (5.4%); nor did 1- and 5-year overall survival (92.5% and 81.6%, respectively). Notable long-term events were chronic heart failure (27.7 admissions/100 patient-years), embolic event (15.9/100 patient-years), and bleeding (13.0/100 patient-years). CONCLUSIONS: Results of SAVR in this well-defined nationwide cohort of patients in Iceland have improved. This may be related to the patients having less severe AS at the time of operation and shorter operating times, as reflected by lower rates of short-term complications. However, the rate of long-term complications did not change significantly, with prosthetic valve-specific events being rare.

INTRODUCTION: Aortic valve replacement (AVR) for aortic stenosis (AS) is the second most common open-heart procedure performed in Iceland. The aim of this study was to analyze the early outcome of AVR among females in Iceland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study including 428 patients who underwent surgical AVR due to AS in Iceland from 2002-2013. Information was gathered from medical records, including pre- and postoperative results of echocardiography and complications. Overall survival was estimated (Kaplan-Meier) and logistic regression used to identify predictors of operative mortality. The median follow-up time was 8.8 years (0-16.5 years). RESULTS: Of the 428 patients, 151 were female (35.3%), that were on average 2 years older than men (72.6 ± 9.4 vs. 70.4 ± 9.8 yrs., p=0.020). Preoperative symptoms were similar, but women had significantly higher EurosSCORE II than men (5.2 ± 8.8 vs. 3.2 ± 4.6, p=0.002). Maximal pressure-gradient across the aortic valve was higher for women (74.4 ± 29.3 mmHg vs. 68.0 ± 23.4 mmHg, p=0,013) but postoperative complications, operative mortality (8.6% vs. 4.0%, p=0.068) and 5-year survival (78.6% vs. 83.1%, p=0.245) were comparable for women and men. Logistic regression analysis showed that female gender was not an independent predictor of 30-day mortality (OR 1.54, 95% CI 0.63-3.77). CONCLUSIONS: Females constitute one third of patients that undergo AVR for AS in Iceland. At the time of surgery females are two years older than men and appear to have a more significant aortic stenosis at the time of surgery. However, complication rates, operative mortality and long-term survival were comparable for both genders.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the proportion of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) who would meet inclusion criteria of the randomised clinical trials that were performed leading up to registration of the tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi). METHODS: Data from 329 patients with PsA were obtained from an Icelandic database, ICEBIO, medical records at the University Hospital of Iceland, and the private out-patient clinic Laeknasetrid Ltd. The patients were classified according to whether they met the inclusion criteria of the clinical trials that were performed ahead of the registration of each respective TNFi. The reasons for exclusion were also explored. RESULTS: 34% of the patients with complete data available met the inclusion criteria. Clinical data in respect to exclusion and inclusion criteria were incomplete for 13% of the cases. The proportion of patients who met the inclusion criteria was highest among those who received adalimumab and etanercept (53%). Patients who received in iximab had the lowest inclusion rate (23%). The main reason why patients did not meet the inclusion criteria was too few swollen and/or tender joints, or in 45% of excluded cases. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that two thirds of patients with PsA in Iceland who are treated with TNFi would not have qualified for the randomised clinical trials performed leading up to the registration of the medications. Further studies with regards to whether outcomes are different between those who met the inclusion criteria and those who did not remain to be performed.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) in Sweden was centralized to two tertiary pediatric surgery centers 1st of July 2018. Although complex surgical care in adults seems to benefit from centralization there is little evidence to support centralization of pediatric surgical care. The aim of this study was to assess centralization of HSCR in Sweden, with special consideration to preoperative management and outcomes in this group of patients. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed data of patients with HSCR that had undergone or were planned to undergo pull-through at our center, from 1st of July 2013 to 30th of June 2023. Patients managed from 1st of July 2013 to 30th of June 2018 were compared with patients managed from 1st of July 2018 to 30th of June 2023 regarding diagnostic procedures, preoperative treatment, complications and time to definitive surgery. RESULTS: Thirty-six patients were managed during the first five-year period compared to 57 during the second period. There was an increased number of patients referred from other Swedish regions to our center following the centralization. Time from diagnosis to pull-through increased from 33 to 55 days after centralization. There were no significant differences in pre-operative management or complications, general or related to stoma. CONCLUSIONS: Despite increasing patient volumes and longer time from diagnosis to pull through, centralization of care for HSCR does not seem to change the preoperative management and risk of complications. With access to support from the specialist center, transanal irrigations remain a safe mode of at home management until surgery, regardless of distance to index hospital. BACKGROUND: Controlled outcomes into adulthood for females with anorectal malformation (ARM) are still scantily studied. The primary aim was to investigate bowel function, bladder function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in females operated for ARM. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based observational study was performed including females treated for ARM at our institution between 1994 and 2017. The bowel function was assessed with bowel function score (BFS) and urinary tract function with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) questionnaires. HRQoL was investigated with validated age-dependent questionnaires. Patient characteristics were retrospectively retrieved from the medical records and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. HRQoL outcomes were compared with normative data whilst bowel and bladder function outcomes were compared to age-matched female controls. RESULTS: Forty-four (41.5 %) of 106 females responded to the questionnaires. Ten of 29 patients (34.5 %) aged 4-17 years and 4 of 14 patients (28.6%) aged ≥18 years, reported a well-preserved bowel function (BFS≥17). Constipation issues decreased with age. BFS was similar in patients with perineal and vestibular fistulas. Thirty-six (83.7%) of the patients had at least one LUTS. No adult patients had issues with involuntary urinary leakage. Adults scored significantly (p = 0.004) lower than normative data regarding HRQoL, while children and adolescents scored comparably to norm data. CONCLUSIONS: Only 28.6 % of the adult patients reported a well-preserved bowel function, similar to the proportion reported by children 4-17 years of age. Adult patients appear to have a diminished HRQoL, however the correlation with BFS was weak. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess fertility in patients treated for Hirschsprung's disease. METHODS: This was a nationwide, population-based cohort study, including all patients with Hirschsprung's disease registered in the Swedish National Patient Register between 1964 and 2004. Five age- and sex-matched controls per patient were randomly selected by Statistics Sweden. Outcome data were retrieved from the Multi-Generation Register, and the Swedish National Patient Register. Study exposure was Hirschsprung's disease and the primary outcome was fertility, defined as having one or more children. Individuals with chromosomal anomalies were excluded. RESULTS: The study cohort comprised 597 patients with Hirschsprung's disease (143 female) and 2969 controls (714 female). The mean(s.d.) age at follow-up was 29.6(10.0) years for patients and 29.8(10.1) years for the controls. A total of 191 (32.0 per cent) patients compared with 1072 (36.1 per cent) controls had one or more children (P = 0.061). The analysis showed that fewer female patients with Hirschsprung's disease had a child (29.4 versus 38.7 per cent, P = 0.037), they were older when they gave birth to their first child (28.1 versus 26.4 years, P = 0.033), and they had fewer children. Of the female patients with Hirschsprung's disease, 19 (45.2 per cent) had only one child, compared with 79 (28.6 per cent) of the female control group (P = 0.047). No difference was noted in the male group in this regard. CONCLUSION: Female patients with Hirschsprung's disease were less likely to have a child, had fewer children, and were older when they gave birth to their first child compared with the controls, indicating impaired fertility. There was no significant difference between male patients with Hirschsprung's disease and controls.

OBJECTIVE: Due to a tender process in Iceland, all patients on Humira® were switched nationwide to its biosimilar Imraldi® in March 2019. The study aimed to explore the patient's perspective of the Humira® and Imraldi® injection devices. METHODS: A standard telephone interview was carried out among patients with inflammatory arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis, who underwent this nationwide switching program a few months earlier. RESULTS: The response rate was 84.5% (n = 198). The average age was 50.8 years, and 53.5% were female. The patients self-administered the drugs in 96% of the cases. The majority (90.5%) stated that they received individualized instruction on using the Humira® pen, compared to 18.2% who accepted instruction in the case of the Imraldi® pen. Almost half (46.6%) of the patients found it more difficult to use the Imraldi® pen than the Humira® pen, while only 12.5% found the Imraldi® pen easier to use. Firstly, these differences were due to more painful insertion of the needle (62.2%) and secondly, due to the experience, the injection process was different (63.0%). CONCLUSION: Patients with inflammatory disorders who have been treated regularly with adalimumab preferred the Humira® injection device over the Imraldi® device, according to our results. After all, these injection devices' structure and content are not the same, although both contain the same active ingredient, i.e. adalimumab. Our results highlight the importance of thorough information, not only with an information letter but also with the possibilities for individualized introduction in planning switching to biosimilars.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been reported in early adulthood in patients with anorectal malformation (ARM), and therefore, the need of endoscopic controls has been discussed. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of CRC in patients with ARM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a nationwide population-based study with data from Swedish national health care registers. All patients diagnosed with ARM born in Sweden between 1964 and 1999 were identified in the National Patient Register. The same group was followed up in the Swedish Cancer Register from birth to December 31, 2014, for occurrences of CRC. Five age- and gender-matched individuals randomly selected from the Medical Birth Register served as controls for each ARM patient born between 1973 and 1999. RESULTS: A total of 817 patients (474 males) with ARM were included and followed up from birth to the end of observational period. Time of follow-up ranged from 15 to 50 years (mean: 28 years). None of the patients was diagnosed with CRC during the observational period. One case of rectal cancer and one case of sigmoid cancer were detected among the 3,760 controls. CONCLUSION: In our study, the risk of CRC in early adulthood in patients with ARM is low. Our result does not support routine endoscopic follow-up for patients with ARM during the first decade of life.

Superconcentrated electrolytes, being highly thermodynamically nonideal, provide a stringent proving ground for continuum transport theories. Herein, we test an ostensibly complete model of LiPF6 in ethyl-methyl carbonate (EMC) based on the Onsager-Stefan-Maxwell theory from irreversible thermodynamics. We perform synchronous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and chronopotentiometry to examine how superconcentrated LiPF6:EMC responds to galvanostatic polarization and open-circuit relaxation. We simulate this experiment using an independently parametrized model with six composition-dependent electrolyte properties, quantified up to saturation. Spectroscopy reveals increasing ion association and solvent coordination with salt concentration. The potentiometric MRI data agree closely with the predicted ion distributions and overpotentials, providing a completely independent validation of the theory. Superconcentrated electrolytes exhibit strong cation-anion interactions and extreme solute-volume effects that mimic elevated lithium transference. Our simulations allow surface overpotentials to be extracted from cell-voltage data to track lithium interfaces. Potentiometric MRI is a powerful tool to illuminate electrolytic transport phenomena.

"Anode-free" batteries present a significant advantage due to their substantially higher energy density and ease of assembly in a dry air atmosphere. However, issues involving lithium dendrite growth and low cycling Coulombic efficiencies during operation remain to be solved. Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on Cu and its effect on Li plating are studied here to understand the interplay between the Cu current collector surface chemistry and plated Li morphology. A native interphase layer (N-SEI) on the Cu current collector was observed with solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (ssNMR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) studies showed that the nature of the N-SEI is affected by the copper interface composition. An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) study identified a relationship between the applied voltage and SEI composition. In addition to the typical SEI components, the SEI contains copper oxides (Cu x O) and their reduction reaction products. Parasitic electrochemical reactions were observed via in situ NMR measurements of Li plating efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies revealed a correlation between the morphology of the plated Li and the SEI homogeneity, current density, and rest time in the electrolyte before plating. Via ToF-SIMS, we found that the preferential plating of Li on Cu is governed by the distribution of ionically conducting rather than electronic conducting compounds. The results together suggest strategies for mitigating dendrite formation by current collector pretreatment and controlled SEI formation during the first battery charge.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to explore the long-term quality of life (QoL) in adults after surgery for Hirschsprung disease in childhood. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Altogether 51 patients were operated for HD at our center during the period 1969 to 1989. In 2007, the validated instruments for assessing QoL, the SF-36 health survey and the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI), were sent to the 47 patients still alive at the time of the study. A retrospective review of the patient records was also done. RESULTS: Forty-two patients returned both questionnaires (89% response rate) at the median age of 28.5 (range 18-45) years. The median clinical follow-up time was 5.7 years (range 5 months-23 years). At the last clinical control, 4 (9%) patients had a terminal enterostomy, 12 (29%) had soiling, 5 (12%) had constipation, and 2 (5%) experienced recurrent enterocolitis. In contrast to males, the subscores for females were lower for general health and mental health than for an age- and sex-matched general population (P < 0.05). Patients having aganglionosis to the right colon had lower GIQLI scores than those with aganglionosis to the left colon (P < 0.05). In multivariate linear regression analysis, female sex was the only factor associated with lower GIQLI score (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The long-term QoL of adults operated for Hirschsprung disease in their youth is satisfactory. Female scores were lower for general and mental health, compared with the matched control group. The study indicates that the longer the aganglionic segment, the greater its impact on QoL in later life.
