Stent-supported angioplasty of a residual coronary artery dissection following replacement of the ascending aorta for acute type A aortic dissection. A report of a successful case.

A 54-year-old-man suddenly experienced severe back pain while eating. On admission to our hospital, contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed an acute type A aortic dissection, and emergency surgical repair was performed the same day. Through median sternotomy, graft replacement of the ascending aorta, including removal of the site of the intimal tear, was carried out under deep hypothermia and retrograde cerebral perfusion. Although the postoperative course was satisfactory, the patient suddenly complained of sever chest pain on postoperative day 23; the ECG trace showed anomalous alterations. Emergency coronary angiography revealed the presence of a wide coronary artery dissection from the entry of the left anterior descending aorta (LAD) to the re-entry of the left circumflex artery (LCX). Multiple stents were implanted in the LAD and LCX. After stenting, the chest symptoms remitted and the ECG trace was normal. The patient was discharged from our hospital on postoperative day 42.

Space charge effect on the electrostatic collection of thoron decay products.

Investigations on electrostatic collection of thoron decay products as a function of field strength in a special source-electrode arrangement have been performed. Yields of the decay products vs. field strength were measured by solid state silicon and CR-39 track-etched detectors. Results show a significant space charge effect on the yield of collected products if an insulator is placed between the electrodes. The intensities of the collected thoron daughters are influenced strongly by the air stream present in the cell.

Some remarks on the indoor radon distribution in a country.

From the point of view of indoor radon activity concentrations, a country is characterized correctly by two parameters (GM and GSD) of a lognormal distribution if and only if hypothesis tests do not reject the distribution of the local radon activity concentrations as a lognormal one. The authors introduce a way to obtain an empirical distribution using a stratum system covering almost the whole country and in each stratum the lognormal model is acceptable according to hypothesis tests. The sample for the analysis is provided by the measurement of radon level in 15,619 Hungarian homes.

[Transplantation of islands of Langerhans: inclusion of living cells into a polymer forming a net-like structure]. / Fragen zur Transplantation von Langerhans-Inseln: Der Einschluss von lebenden Zellen in ein Polymer, welches eine netzförmige Struktur bildet.

A two-component polyacrylic amide gel forming a net-like structure was built up on pancreatic cells. In such a way the transplanted cells could be protected from the damage by immune protein with big molecule. The method was tested in yeast cells before, human erythrocytes, and wether erythrocytes. It was shown that the polymerisation and the inclusion method do not influence essentially the vitality of the examined cells. It was demonstrated by means of the complement fixation reaction that the included erythrocytes cannot be damaged by the immune protein with big molecule. Metabolic processes of the included pancreas beta cells were provable by diffusion. The experiments promise that the included cells survive after the transplantation and the polyacrylic amide gel protects the cells from the impairing effect of the immune protein.
