RESUMO

We present an all-dielectric metasurface that simultaneously supports electric and magnetic dipole resonances for orthogonal polarizations. At resonances, the metasurface reflects the incident light with nearly perfect efficiency and provides a phase difference of π in the two axes, making a low-loss half-wave plate in reflection mode. The polarization handedness of the incident circularly polarized light is preserved after reflection; this is different from either a pure electric mirror or magnetic mirror. With the features of high reflection and circular polarization conservation, the metamirror is an ideal platform for the geometric phase-based gradient metasurface functioning in reflection mode. Anomalous reflection with the planar meta-mirror is demonstrated as a proof of concept. The proposed meta-mirror can be a good alternative to plasmonic metasurfaces for future compact and high-efficiency metadevices for polarization and phase manipulation in reflection mode.

RESUMO

Terahertz imaging is becoming a biological imaging modality in its own right, alongside the more mature infrared and X-ray techniques. Nevertheless, extraction of hyperspectral, biometric information of samples is limited by experimental challenges. Terahertz time domain spectroscopy reflection measurements demand highly precise alignment and suffer from limitations of the sample thickness. In this work, a novel hybrid Kramers-Kronig and Fabry-Pérot based algorithm has been developed to overcome these challenges. While its application is demonstrated through dielectric retrieval of glass-backed human bone slices for prospective characterisation of metastatic defects or osteoporosis, the generality of the algorithm offers itself to wider application towards biological materials.

RESUMO

Topological insulator nanoparticles (TINPs) host topologically protected Dirac surface states, just like their bulk counterparts. For TINPs of radius <100 nm, quantum confinement on the surface results in the discretization of the Dirac cone. This system of discrete energy levels is referred to as a topological quantum dot (TQD) with energy level spacing on the order of Terahertz (THz), which is tunable with material-type and particle size. The presence of these discretized energy levels in turn leads to a new electron-mediated phonon-light coupling in the THz range, and the resulting mode can be observed in the absorption cross-section of the TINPs. We present the first experimental evidence of this new quantum phenomenon in Bi2Te3 topological quantum dots, remarkably observed at room temperature.

RESUMO

Metallic gate electrodes are often employed to control the conductivity of graphene based field effect devices. The lack of transparency of such electrodes in many optical applications is a key limiting factor. We demonstrate a working concept of a double layer graphene field effect device that utilizes a thin film of sputtered aluminum nitride as dielectric gate material. For this system, we show that the graphene resistance can be modified by a voltage between the two graphene layers. We study how a second gate voltage applied to the silicon back gate modifies the measured microwave transport data at around 8.7 GHz. As confirmed by numerical simulations based on the Boltzmann equation, this system resembles a parallel circuit of two graphene layers with different intrinsic doping levels. The obtained experimental results indicate that the graphene-aluminum nitride-graphene device concept presents a promising technology platform for terahertz- to- optical devices as well as radio-frequency acoustic devices where piezoelectricity in aluminum nitride can also be exploited.

RESUMO

The non-destructive ex vivo determination of haemoglobin (Hgb) concentration offers the capability to conduct multiple red blood cell haematological measurements on a single sample, an advantage that current optical techniques are unable to offer. Here, a microwave method and device for the accurate and non-destructive determination of Hgb concentration in microlitre blood samples are described. Using broadband microwave spectroscopy, a relationship is established between the dielectric properties of murine blood and Hgb concentration that is utilized to create a technique for the determination of Hgb concentration. Subsequently, a microwave dielectric resonator-microfluidic system is implemented in the analysis of 52 murine samples with microlitre volumes and Hgb concentrations ranging from 0 to 17 g dL(-1) . Using the characterized relationship, independent and minimally invasive Hgb measurements are made on nine healthy mice as well as seven with mutations in the Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene that leads to colorectal cancer and consequently anaemia.
