RESUMO

This article details how and why we have developed a flexible and responsive process-based rubric exemplar for teaching, learning, and assessing critical and creative thinking. We hope to contribute to global discussions of and efforts toward instrumentalising the challenge of assessing, but not standardising, creativity in compulsory education. Here, we respond to the key ideas of the four interrelated elements in the critical and creative thinking general capability in the Australian Curriculum learning continuum: inquiring; generating ideas, possibilities, actions; reflecting on thinking processes; and analysing, synthesising and evaluating reasoning and procedures. The rubrics, radical because they privilege process over outcome, have been designed to be used alongside the current NAPLAN tests in Years 5, 7 and 9 to build an Australian-based national creativity measure. We do so to argue the need for local and global measures of creativity in education as the first round of testing and results of the PISA Assessment of Creative Thinking approach and to contribute to the recognition of creative thinking (and doing) as a core twenty-first century literacy alongside literacy and numeracy.

RESUMO

Alcohol misuse is a common presentation to the Emergency Department (ED). The International Classification of Diseases ICD-10 for alcohol misuse, both under F10 and Y90/Y91, is not straightforward. The practicalities of coding ED attendances reveal an increasing detachment from ICD-10 (currently under review). Early identification [sometimes using blood alcohol concentrations (BACs)] and brief advice (IBA) can reduce unscheduled alcohol-related ED re-attendance. The UK Government Department of Health has implemented use of the terms 'Hazardous Drinking', 'Harmful Drinking' and 'Dependent Drinking' in its Public Service Agreements aimed at reducing harm by alcohol. Simplifying coding might increase IBA usage. We suggest that coding improvements in ICD-11 should update Y91 (currently 'clinical assessment')-with ICD-10 Y90 remaining for BAC to classify a patient's 'alcohol status'. Y90 and Y91 together would indicate the urgency for early IBA and/or speciality referral, aiming to reduce the prevalence of 'Dependent Drinking'.

RESUMO

Broiler chickens exposed to heat stress adapt to various behavioral changes to regulate their comfortable body temperature, which is critical to ensure their performance and welfare. Hence, assessing various behavioral responses in birds when they are subjected to environmental changes can be essential for assessing their welfare under heat-stressed conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two air velocity (AV) treatments on heavy broilers' behavioral changes from 43 to 54 days under summer conditions. Two AV treatments (high and low) were applied in six poultry growth chambers with three chambers per treatment and 44 COBB broilers per chamber from 28 to 61 days in the summer of 2019. Three video cameras placed inside each chamber (2.44 m × 2.44 m × 2.44 m in dimension) were used to record the behavior of different undisturbed birds, such as feeding, drinking, resting, standing, walking, panting, etc. The results indicate that the number of chickens feeding, drinking, standing, walking, sitting, wing flapping, and leg stretching changed under AV treatments. High AV increased the number of chickens feeding, standing, and walking. Moreover, a two-way interaction with age and the time of day can affect drinking and panting. This study provides insights into heavy broilers' behavioral changes under heat-stressed conditions and AV treatments, which will help guide management practices to improve birds' performance and welfare under commercial conditions in the future.

RESUMO

Intranasal opiate analgesia is the first choice in children presenting to paediatric emergency departments with severe pain. A prospective observational study was performed which showed that intranasal fentanyl is a safe effective alternative to diamorphine.

RESUMO

A key requirement for longitudinal studies using routinely-collected health data is to be able to measure what individuals are present in the datasets used, and over what time period. Individuals can enter and leave the covered population of administrative datasets for a variety of reasons, including both life events and characteristics of the datasets themselves. An automated, customizable method of determining individuals' presence was developed for the primary care dataset in Swansea University's SAIL Databank. The primary care dataset covers only a portion of Wales, with 76% of practices participating. The start and end date of the data varies by practice. Additionally, individuals can change practices or leave Wales. To address these issues, a two step process was developed. First, the period for which each practice had data available was calculated by measuring changes in the rate of events recorded over time. Second, the registration records for each individual were simplified. Anomalies such as short gaps and overlaps were resolved by applying a set of rules. The result of these two analyses was a cleaned set of records indicating start and end dates of available primary care data for each individual. Analysis of GP records showed that 91.0% of events occurred within periods calculated as having available data by the algorithm. 98.4% of those events were observed at the same practice of registration as that computed by the algorithm. A standardized method for solving this common problem has enabled faster development of studies using this data set. Using a rigorous, tested, standardized method of verifying presence in the study population will also positively influence the quality of research.

RESUMO

3D models of CYP2E1 were constructed for the purpose of structure-based prediction of 2E1 metabolism of diverse substrates based on configuration sampling of ligand-atom-oxyferryl center distances and quantum chemical criteria. Models were constructed on the basis of sequence alignments of 2E1 with templates of known structure, including rabbit CYP2C5 (3LVdH) and bacterial CYP450s. Following geometric and energetic assessments, the utility of the model was tested in structure-based predictions of metabolism. Autodock was used to dock chlorzoxazone, p-nitrophenol, N-nitrosodimethylamine, acetominophen, caffeine, theophylline, and methoxyflurane into the model CYP2E1 employing a model oxyferryl heme with charges based on density functional theoretical parametrization. In all cases, the lowest energy bound docked configurations corresponded to ones with the substrate intimately associated with the oxyferryl center. Configurations among the lowest energy docked forms of each of the ligands had orientations relative to the oxyferryl center consistent with the experimentally observed metabolites. Docking of long-chain dialkylnitrosoamines revealed no heme binding site bound configurations, in agreement with the negligible metabolism of these ligands. The lowest energy docked configurations of chlorzoxazone, p-nitrophenol, and N-nitrosodimethylamine, high-affinity substrates of 2E1, were used to initiate 300 ps molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories. The MD-sampled ligand-oxyferryl heme reactant configurations were in good accord with density functional theoretical (DFT) optimized oxyferryl-heme-ligand geometries. Analysis of the MD-sampled ligand-2E1 configurations from multiple docked orientations indicates the configurations with closest exposure of reactive centers to the oxyferryl heme to be correlated with observed metabolites with proper consideration of H-abstraction energetics. DFT assessment of relative radical energetics is directly compared with differential H-abstraction activation energetics by compound I and by a p-nitrosophenoxy radical compound I surrogate for the specific case of methoxyflurane and is shown to be in good agreement.
