RESUMO

Moderate shaking of Liquidambar trunks for 30 seconds daily reduced height growth to only 20 to 30 percent of that of trees not shaken. Six of eight trees shaken set terminal buds within 3 weeks. The trees which were not shaken formed no terminal buds. An endogenous mechanism for regulating tree growth in windy situations is implicated.

RESUMO

A small coryneform bacterium was consistently isolated from sugarcane with ratoon stunting disease and shown to be the causal agent. A similar bacterium was isolated from Bermuda grass. Both strains multiplied in sugarcane and Bermuda grass, but the Bermuda grass strain did not incite the symptoms of ratoon stunting disease in sugarcane. Shoot growth in Bermuda grass was retarded by both strains.

RESUMO

Neointimal hyperplasia at the proximal anastomosis of a femorodistal bypass can be managed by dividing the autogenous vein graft and transposing the proximal anastomosis from the common femoral to the deep femoral artery. The method obviates repeat dissection of the graft and femoral arteries in the groin.

RESUMO

Peroperative evaluation of the success of thromboembolectomy is achieved with a technique that employs interrupted horizontal mattress sutures. Angled traction on the sutures functionally closes the transverse arteriotomy while restoration of circulation is assessed. The arteriotomy may be opened for repassing embolectomy catheters by relieving the traction; if circulation is satisfactory the sutures are tied.

RESUMO

Repair of failing femorodistal bypass grafts with secondary distal "jump" grafts was performed 34 times in 33 patients. Indication for operation was limb salvage for all distal jump grafts and for 85% of the initial femorodistal bypass grafts. Autogenous vein bypass grafts were used in 28 of 33 initial femorodistal grafts (85%) and in 29 of 34 secondary jump grafts (85%). Sixteen of the 33 initial grafts in jeopardy extended to the infrapopliteal level (48%) and 19 of the jump grafts terminated in foot or ankle arteries (56%). The 12 jump grafts performed in the first 2 months of the initial graft were associated with high rates (9%) of graft thrombosis and amputation. Early loss of viability of initial grafts probably resulted from technical and judgment errors or underestimation of distal disease. Progression of distal disease produced late failure after 1 year of implantation of the initial grafts. The 1-year patency rate of the initial femorodistal grafts was 63% but only 32% of these grafted limbs were viable and were not at risk of amputation. Distal jump grafts produced a 49% improvement in limb viability (to an 81% limb salvage rate) and an 11% increase in the initial graft patency rate (to 74%) at 1 year.

RESUMO

Autogenous veins other than single-length greater saphenous vein were used in 150 operations to revascularize the extremities of 138 patients; three operations were for upper extremity ischemia and four were lower extremity reconstructions with lesser saphenous vein grafts. The remaining 143 bypasses were performed to revascularize lower extremities in 131 patients. Arm vein grafts were used in 102 operations, and 14 different combinations of vein segments were used to construct 41 totally autogenous composite vein grafts. Tissue necrosis or rest pain was the indication for 70% of arm vein bypasses; 52% of these grafts extended to an infrapopliteal artery. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year patency rates were 82%, 69%, and 60%, resulting in limb salvage rates of 93%, 91%, and 81%, respectively. Composite autogenous vein grafts resulted in a 1-year limb salvage rate of 79% in a select group of elderly patients with advanced arterial disease, poor runoff, and profound ischemia. Limb salvage was the indication for 93% of these operations; tissue necrosis was present in 71% while 80% required infrapopliteal reconstructions--37% to a peroneal artery and 29% to the ankle or foot. Successful limb salvage has been accomplished with alternative autogenous veins when the greater saphenous vein is missing or inadequate, dramatically reducing the use of prosthetic conduits in our practice.

RESUMO

A group of five diabetic patients had gangrene or failed limited amputations and palpable foot pulses in a total of seven limbs. Because a failure to heal persisted and gangrene progressed, arteriography was performed and disclosed occlusion of all three infrapopliteal arteries. Tibial bypass grafting resulted in complete healing in four of the five patients. The fifth patient refused surgery and died with progressive sepsis. The incidence of this unusual syndrome is unknown, but presumably it is rare. The mechanism of pulse formation in the foot, despite occlusion of the infrapopliteal vessels, is dependent on good flow to the popliteal artery, collateral flow to the rigid distal tibial-peroneal vessels, compliant ankle arteries, and highly resistive distal foot vessels. Although healing of limited amputations is usual in diabetic patients with foot pulses, it is not universal. We recommend that arteriography be performed routinely if gangrene is present and the foot is salvageable, irrespective of pedal pulse status.

RESUMO

Subclavian and axillary artery occlusive disease resulted in sufficient upper extremity symptoms to necessitate 30 vascular reconstructions in 28 patients over the past ten years. Female patients predominated, with a ratio of 2.5:1. The average age of the patients was 61 years. The incidence of diabetes mellitus was low (7%). Sixteen of 18 proximal subclavian lesions were on the left side, while more distal lesions were equally distributed on the left and right. Extrathoracic bypasses were used in all cases. Dacron grafts were used in 16 of 17 carotid-subclavian bypasses. Autogenous vein grafts were used in 11 of 13 bypasses to the axillary or brachial artery. Concomitant cervicodorsal sympathectomy was done in only four patients. The in-hospital graft patency rate was 93% and the long-term graft patency rate at one year and beyond was 88%.

RESUMO

When a suitable single length of saphenous or arm vein is unavailable, the elderly patient with a profoundly ischemic extremity, poor runoff, and a distal outflow vessel frequently undergoes amputation. Rather than performing primary amputation or resorting to nonautogenous conduites, we used 21 different combinations of available vein segments of ipsilateral or contralateral greater saphenous, lesser saphenous, cephalic, and basilic veins as composite autogenous bypass grafts. Fifty-four extremities, of which 21 (39%) had one or more failed previous bypasses, were revascularized. Tissue necrosis necessitated operation in 74% (40 instances) and rest pain in 19% (ten instances). All grafts extended below the knee, 22% (12 grafts) to the infrageniculate popliteal artery, 78% (42 grafts) to an infrapopliteal runoff vessel, and 28% (15 grafts) to the ankle or foot. The patency rate at one month was 81%. Thrombectomy alone or with local graft repair increased the one-month patency rate to 96%. At one year, the patency and limb salvage rates were 74% and 82%, respectively.

RESUMO

This study enrolled 28 CNS-involved patients with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense at the Kenya Trypanosomiasis Research Institute (Alupe, Kenya) to examine treatment efficacy and toxicity of melarsoprol in relation to renal excretion/dose relationships. This study complied with World Health Organization treatment recommendations, initially treating with suramin followed by three courses of melarsoprol. Traced study patients had a relapse rate of 4.1%. The toxicity and crude death rate was 7.1%. Total urine arsenic output was measured between 24 and 48 hr after the last dose for each course. The range of means of total urine arsenic output between the three treatment courses was 356-511 micrograms. There was no correlation comparing melarsoprol dose, estimated creatine clearance, or urine arsenic output. Urinary pharmacokinetic parameters are not predictive of toxicity or therapeutic efficacy.

RESUMO

The possible benefit of either partial splenectomy or splenic autotransplantation as protection against post-splenectomy sepsis was investigated. Sprague-Dawley rats were challenged with intravenous Streptococcus pneumoniae and the incidence of bacteremia and mortality were recorded. Animals were divided into four groups based upon the amount of splenic tissue conserved: total splenectomy (0%), partial splenectomy (62%), splenic autotransplantation (27%), or sham celiotomy (100%). A statistically significant (P 0.05) decrease in the incidence of septic death was seen in comparing the total splenectomized animals (63%) to the autotransplant group (27%), the partial splenectomy (4%) and the control group (4%). This diminishing mortality is inversely proportional to the amount of splenic remnant in the respective groups. There was a similar, parallel relationship in the incidence of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteremia. Thus, the greater the amount of remaining splenic tissue, the lower the incidence of bacteremia and subsequent mortality, implying the preservation of immunologic function with splenic conservation.

RESUMO

A review and a performance comparison of several often-used vector quantization (VQ) codebook generation algorithms are presented. The codebook generation algorithms discussed include the Linde-Buzo-Gray (LBG) binary-splitting algorithm, the pairwise nearest-neighbor algorithm, the simulated annealing algorithm, and the fuzzy c-means clustering analysis algorithm. A new directed-search binary-splitting method which reduces the complexity of the LBG algorithm, is presented. Also, a new initial codebook selection method which can obtain a good initial codebook is presented. By using this initial codebook selection algorithm, the overall LBG codebook generation time can be reduced by a factor of 1.5-2.

RESUMO

Three fast search routines to be used in the encoding phase of vector quantization (VQ) image compression systems are presented. These routines, which are based on geometric considerations, provide the same results as an exhaustive (or full) search. Examples show that the proposed algorithms need only 3-20% of the number of mathematical operations required by a full search and fewer than 50% of the operations required by recently proposed alternatives.

RESUMO

This article discusses bit allocation and adaptive search algorithms for mean-residual vector quantization (MRVQ) and multistage vector quantization (MSVQ). The adaptive search algorithm uses a buffer and a distortion threshold function to control the bit rate that is assigned to each input vector. It achieves a constant rate for the entire image but variable bit rate for each vector in the image. For a given codebook and several bit rates, we compare the performance between the optimal bit allocation and adaptive search algorithms. The results show that the performance of the adaptive search algorithm is only 0.20-0.53 dB worse than that of the optimal bit allocation algorithm, but the complexity of the adaptive search algorithm is much less than that of the optimal bit allocation algorithm.

RESUMO

Chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) is known to infect and replicate in various Marek's disease chicken cell lines (MDCCs) derived from Marek's disease (MD) tumors. One line, MDCC-MSB1, has been the substrate used in most studies. We compared a total of 26 MDCCs, including two sublines of MDCC-MSB1, MSB1 (L) and MSB1 (S), four other MD tumor-derived lines, and 20 lines derived from MD virus-induced local lesions, for susceptibility to the Cux-1 and CIA-1 strains of CIAV. The cell lines represented six phenotypic groups of T cells based on the expression of CD4, CD8, and TCR-2 and -3 surface markers. Susceptibility was measured by the number of cells positive for viral antigen in immunofluorescence (IF) tests at 3-10 days postinfection. No clear-cut differences were found in susceptibility related to phenotype, although CD4-/8+ lines and CD4-/8- lines might be more susceptible than CD4+/8- lines. However, several individual lines were more susceptible to Cux-1 than the two MSB1 sublines tested. Contrary to an earlier report, cells of MDCC-CU147, a CD8+, TCR3+, local-lesion derived line, were found to be susceptible to CIA-1. In fact, CU147 was distinguished by very high susceptibility to both CIAV strains. In direct comparisons with MSB1, CU147 detected approximately 10-fold lower doses of virus. Also, virus spread was faster (P < 0.05) in CU147 than in MSB1 and other lines. Results from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests to detect infection in titrations were in general agreement with IF test results although PCR detected infection in a few terminal dilution cultures that were negative by IF.

RESUMO

Isolates of Marek's disease virus (MDV) representing three pathotypes of differing virulence were compared for relative immunosuppressive properties in genetically susceptible P2a-strain and genetically resistant N2a-strain chickens. Criteria of immunosuppression were 1) persistence of early cytolytic infection (i.e., a delay or failure to enter latency) in lymphoid organs, 2) atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius and thymus as measured by organ weight proportional to body weight at 8 and 14 days postinfection (DPI), and 3) histopathologic evidence of necrosis and atrophy in lymphoid organs. No significant differences in infection level were observed among the pathotypes during the early (4-5 DPI) period of infection. However, the extent of persistent cytolytic infection at 7-8 DPI, based on numbers of tissues positive and mean scores in immunofluorescence tests, was greater (P < 0.05) for three isolates (RK1, 584A, 648A) in the highest virulence pathotype (very virulent-plus MDV [vv + MDV]) than for two isolates (JM16, GA5) in a lower virulence (virulent MDV [vMDV]) pathotype. Results from two isolates (RB1B, Md5) classified in the intermediate very virulent pathotype (very virulent MDV [vvMDV]) fell between those from the other two pathotypes. Similarly, there was a stepwise effect of viral pathotype in which the vv + MDV isolates caused the most severe damage to lymphoid organs in terms of atrophy (relative organ weights) and histopathologic changes. Organs from chickens infected with vv + MDVs showed little recovery between 8 and 14 DPI. The vMDV isolates caused the least severe damage, and lymphoid organs showed a significant return toward normal by 14 DPI; vvMDV isolates induced intermediate degrees of atrophy and recovery. The same pattern of relationship between virulence pathotype and degree of bursal and thymic atrophy was also observed in genetically resistant N2a chickens. These results suggest that the degree of immunosuppression is linked to virulence and that a simple measure of atrophic changes (relative organ weights) in the bursa of Fabricius and thymus might be useful in determining the pathotype classification of new MDV isolates. The basis for differences in immunosuppressive potential of MDV isolates needs further clarification.

RESUMO

A major complaint of individuals with normal hearing and hearing impairments is a reduced ability to understand speech in a noisy environment. This paper describes the concept of adaptive noise cancelling for removing noise from corrupted speech signals. Application of adaptive digital signal processing has long been known and is described from a historical as well as technical perspective. The Widrow-Hoff LMS (least mean square) algorithm developed in 1959 forms the introduction to modern adaptive signal processing. This method uses a "primary" input which consists of the desired speech signal corrupted with noise and a second "reference" signal which is used to estimate the primary noise signal. By subtracting the adaptively filtered estimate of the noise, the desired speech signal is obtained. Recent developments in the field as they relate to noise cancellation are described. These developments include more computationally efficient algorithms as well as algorithms that exhibit improved learning performance. A second method for removing noise from speech, for use when no independent reference for the noise exists, is referred to as single channel noise suppression. Both adaptive and spectral subtraction techniques have been applied to this problem--often with the result of decreased speech intelligibility. Current techniques applied to this problem are described, including signal processing techniques that offer promise in the noise suppression application.
