RESUMO

The generation of self-focusing beams of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation using the focal cone high harmonic generation (FCHHG) technique is examined for high energy lasers. The FCHHG geometry is created by passing a focusing laser beam through a gas sheet prior to reaching focus and thus creating a converging beam of high harmonic radiation. This leads to a larger interaction area that increases the total area of XUV emission while not exceeding the saturation intensity of the target atoms or increasing the density of the atoms. Such a method allows for scaling of HHG to any incident laser power. An experiment was conducted demonstrating such scaling to incident 400 TW pulses, showing both the expected spectral signature of HHG and the converging cone of XUV radiation. It was found that this technique is very sensitive to spatial non-uniformity in the driving laser, which has become more prevalent in high energy laser systems.

RESUMO

The first vascularized composite allograft (VCA) transplant in the United States was performed in 1998 in a 40-year-old man who received a laryn-geal transplant after experiencing severe trauma to the throat 20 years before. The following VCA was a hand transplant in 1999 in a 37-year-old man who lost his left hand 13 years before. Since then, the field of VCA transplantation has made significant strides. On July 3, 2014, the Or gan Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN)/United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) oversight of VCA procurement and transplant in the United States went into effect. In the last decade, the number of candidates listed for and transplanted with VCA has increased. While patient demographic data, whether listed candidates or patients undergoing VCA transplant, is limited by sample size, the trend is a predominance toward a young/middle-aged, White population. Overall outcomes data have been promising, with the vast majority of VCA transplants resulting in functioning grafts.

RESUMO

Ammonia is predicted to be one of the major components in the depths of the ice giant planets Uranus and Neptune. Their dynamics, evolution, and interior structure are insufficiently understood and models rely imperatively on data for equation of state and transport properties. Despite its great significance, the experimentally accessed region of the ammonia phase diagram today is still very limited in pressure and temperature. Here we push the probed regime to unprecedented conditions, up to ∼350 GPa and ∼40 000 K. Along the Hugoniot, the temperature measured as a function of pressure shows a subtle change in slope at ∼7000 K and ∼90 GPa, in agreement with ab initio simulations we have performed. This feature coincides with the gradual transition from a molecular liquid to a plasma state. Additionally, we performed reflectivity measurements, providing the first experimental evidence of electronic conduction in high-pressure ammonia. Shock reflectance continuously rises with pressure above 50 GPa and reaches saturation values above 120 GPa. Corresponding electrical conductivity values are up to 1 order of magnitude higher than in water in the 100 GPa regime, with possible significant contributions of the predicted ammonia-rich layers to the generation of magnetic dynamos in ice giant interiors.

RESUMO

The inclusion of thermal effects in optical manipulation has been explored in diverse experiments, increasing the possibilities for applications in diverse areas. In this Letter, the results of combined optical and thermal manipulation in the vicinity of a highly absorbent hydrogenated amorphous silicon layer, which induces both the generation of convective currents and thermophoresis, are presented. In combination with the optical forces, thermal forces help reduce the optical power required to trap and manipulate micrometric polystyrene beads. Moreover, the inclusion of these effects allows the stacking and manipulation of multiple particles with a single optical trap along with the beam propagation, providing an extra tool for micromanipulation of a variety of samples.

The phase diagram and melting curve of water ice is investigated up to 45 GPa and 1600 K by synchrotron x-ray diffraction in the resistively and laser heated diamond anvil cell. Our melting data evidence a triple point at 14.6 GPa, 850 K. The latter is shown to be related to a first-order solid transition from the dynamically disordered form of ice VII, denoted ice VII^{'}, toward a high-temperature phase with the same bcc oxygen lattice but larger volume and higher entropy. Our experiments are compared to ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, enabling us to identify the high-temperature bcc phase with the predicted superionic ice VII^{''} phase [J.-A. We tested different optical elements placed in three different positions by applying the irradiance transport equation (ITE), obtaining the wavefront $[ W(x,y) ]$[W(x,y)] and aberration surface [$ \textit{AS}(r,\theta ) $AS(r,θ)]. The existing noise in the captures $ I $I as well as in the $ W $W and $ AS $AS were analyzed applying several filters: first a filter based on Legendre polynomials (LP), generating the most probable points increasing the data resolution; second, a filter based on a 50 deg 2D-LP was used as a multilineal fit (multiple linear regression); and third, an ideal bandpass filter in the Fourier space after inducing a periodicity using Ronchi simulated masks with periods in $ x,y,xy $x,y,xy was used to perform data scanning (similar to the four-step phase-shifting method). Signal-to-noise ratio values were obtained for each proposed filter along with the most probable image free from noise, determined from a linear combination of the original data and the applied filters.

We introduce a technique for obtaining three-dimensional (3D) profiles of objects captured in two-dimensional (2D) flat images (FI). This technique performs a numerical approximation of the object's topography from their image gray tones, analyzing topological concepts such as algebraic bases construction, metric functions in terms of such bases, as well as modeling and development of an isomorphism to project masks (fringe patterns) in the FI, allowing us to use the optimal 3D profilometry techniques. Among these techniques, phase shifting (four steps) is applied in the pattern shifts of the projected masks, but with a 2D shift from left to right and from top to bottom, simultaneously. Moreover, the fringe patterns in the masks are binary and with superposed periods in x, y (bi-Ronchi). We show the results of the construction of the masks, as well as their projection into the FIs. We also show the 3D profilometry of the objects after the projection and phase-shifting application and a simple segmentation to observe a particular object. Subsequently, we perform the analysis of a single Mg crystal's micrography.

Betalains are pigments that have properties that benefit health, such as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial activity, and they also possess a high ability to provide color. However, these pigments, although used as colorants in certain foods, have not been able to be potentialized to diverse areas such as pharmacology, due to their instability to physicochemical factors such as high temperature, pH changes and high water activity. For this reason, different stabilization methods have been reported. The method that has presented best results for diversifying the use of betalains has been encapsulation. Encapsulation is a method of entrapment where the objective is to protect a compound utilizing more stable matrices from encapsulation technologies. This method has been employed to provide greater stability to betalains, using different matrices and encapsulation technologies. However, a review does not exist, to our knowledge, which analyzes the effect of matrices and encapsulation technologies on betalains stabilization. Therefore, the objective of this review article was to evaluate the different matrices and encapsulation techniques that have been employed to stabilize betalains, in order to arrive at specific conclusions concerning the effect of encapsulation on their stabilization and to propose new techniques and matrices that could promote their stabilization.

About 50 years ago, Sarachick and Schappert [Phys. Rev. D. 1, 2738-2752 (1970)] showed that relativistic Thomson scattering leads to wavelength shifts that are proportional to the laser intensity. About 28 years later, Chen et al. [Nature 396, 653-655 (1998)] used these shifts to estimate their laser intensity near 1018 W/cm 2. More recently, there have been several theoretical studies aimed at exploiting nonlinear Thomson scattering as a tool for direct measurement of intensities well into the relativistic regime. We present the first quantitative study of this approach for intensities between 1018 and 1019 W/cm 2. We show that the spectral shifts are in reasonable agreement with estimates of the peak intensity extracted from images of the focal area obtained at reduced power. Finally, we discuss the viability of the approach, its range of usefulness and how it might be extended to gauge intensities well in excess of 1019 W/cm 2.

In this paper, we give a solution to the irradiance transport equation (ITE) using the two-dimensional (2D) Legendre polynomials (LPs) and an interpolator (i-LP) based on the LP. In the first place, we analyze the experimental data; subsequently, we proceed to fit the most probable 2D LPs' surface to the data in order to obtain the wavefront surface (W(x,y) of the elements under test) as a solution of the ITE differential equation associated with a boundary problem; and finally, we interpolate the resulting fitting. The interpolation is built from LP to increase the resolution and sharpness of the data. We apply the ITE to these results in order to obtain the wavefront as a nondeterministic solution that increases the resolution of the ITE as an optical test, and we compare our results regarding the obtained aberration surfaces (AS(x,y)).

In this work, we propose the construction of the Moiré-Ronchigram as a pattern obtained from simple Ronchigrams, superposed and with a slight degree of rotation, to obtain a 3D wavefront. The aberrations in the obtained wavefront are fitted to the aberration Zernike polynomial of degree 12 in order to obtain a polynomial expression of a high degree of efficiency, which is subsequently compared with the general equation of quadrics (considering the coefficients accordingly) to obtain essential parameters (as focus, eccentricity, or F number) that allow us to understand and manipulate the optical elements under test optimally. Finally, we compare our results analyzing optical surfaces to make a weak statistic of our proposed method.

The main objective of this study was to determine the association of dry matter intake as percentage of body weight (DMI%BW) and energy balance (EB) prepartum (-21 d relative to parturition) and postpartum (28 d) with ketosis (n = 189) and clinical mastitis (n = 79). For this, DMI%BW and EB were the independent variables and ketosis and clinical mastitis were the dependent variables. A secondary objective was to evaluate prepartum DMI%BW and EB as predictors of ketosis and clinical mastitis. For this, ketosis and clinical mastitis were the independent variables and DMI%BW and EB were the dependent variables. Data from 476 cows from 9 experiments were compiled. Clinical mastitis was diagnosed if milk from 1 or more quarters was abnormal in color, viscosity, or consistency, with or without accompanying heat, pain, redness, or swelling of the quarter or generalized illness, during the first 28 d postpartum. Ketosis was defined as the presence of acetoacetate in urine that resulted in any color change [5 mg/dL (trace) or higher] in the urine test strip (Ketostix, Bayer, Leverkusen, Germany). Cows that developed ketosis had lesser DMI%BW and lesser EB on d -5, -3, -2, and -1 than cows without ketosis. Each 0.1-percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each 1-Mcal decrease in the average of EB in the last 3 d prepartum increased the odds of having ketosis by 8 and 5%, respectively. Cut-offs for DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 d prepartum to predict ketosis were established and were ≤1.5%/d and ≤1.1 Mcal/d, respectively. Cows that developed ketosis had lesser postpartum DMI%BW and EB and greater energy-corrected milk (ECM) than cows without ketosis. Cows that developed clinical mastitis had lesser DMI%BW but similar prepartum EB compared with cows without clinical mastitis. Each 0.1-percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each 1-Mcal decrease in the average EB in the last 3 d prepartum increased the odds of having clinical mastitis by 10 and 8%, respectively. The average DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 d prepartum produced significant cut-offs to predict clinical mastitis postpartum, which were ≤1.2%/d and ≤1.0 Mcal/d, respectively. Cows that developed clinical mastitis had lesser postpartum DMI%BW from d 3 to 15 and on d 17; greater EB on d 18, from d 21 to 23, and on d 26; and lesser ECM. The main limitation in this study is that the time-order of disease relative to DMI%BW and ECM is inconsistent such that postpartum outcomes were measured before and after disease, which was diagnosed at variable intervals after calving. In summary, measures of prepartum DMI were associated with and were predictors of ketosis and clinical mastitis postpartum, although the effect sizes were small.

A secondary objective was to evaluate prepartum DMI%BW and EB as predictors of CDZ and metritis. For this, CDZ and metritis were the independent variables and DMI%BW and EB were the dependent variables. Data from 476 cows from 9 experiments were compiled. Cows that developed CDZ had lesser postpartum DMI%BW from d 3 to 12 and lesser energy-corrected milk (ECM) than cows that did not develop CDZ. Dry matter intake as percentage of BW and EB prepartum did not affect the odds of CDZ. Cows with metritis had lesser prepartum DMI%BW and EB. Each 0.1-percentage point decrease in the average DMI%BW and each 1-Mcal decrease in the average EB in the last 3 d prepartum increased the odds of having metritis by 8%. The average DMI%BW and EB during the last 3 d prepartum produced significant cut-offs to predict metritis postpartum, which were ≤1.6%/d and ≤2.5 Mcal/d, respectively. Cows that developed metritis had lesser overall postpartum DMI%BW and ECM and lesser EB from d 2 to 5 and from d 7 to 11 than cows that did not develop metritis. The main limitation in this study is that the time-order of disease relative to DMI%BW and ECM is inconsistent such that postpartum outcomes were measured before and after disease, which was diagnosed at variable intervals after calving. In summary, prepartum DMI%BW and EB were associated with and were predictors of metritis although the effect sizes were small for metritis, and calving disorders and metritis were associated with decreased DMI%BW and ECM postpartum.

All the different phases of water ice between 2 GPa and several megabars are based on a single body-centered cubic sub-lattice of oxygen atoms. They differ only by the behavior of the hydrogen atoms. In this study, we investigate the dynamics of the H atoms at high pressures and temperatures in water ice from first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. We provide a detailed analysis of the O-H⋯O bonding dynamics over the entire stability domain of the body-centered cubic (bcc) water ices and compute transport properties and vibrational density-of-states. We report the first ab initio evidence for a plastic phase of water and we propose a coherent phase diagram for bcc water ices compatible with the two groups of melting curves and with the multiple anomalies reported in ice VII around 15 GPa.

The aim of this paper is to compare the Ronchi test and the Moiré deflectometry applied to a new pattern. To do so, we used two Ronchi patterns (typical Ronchigrams) produced by two identical Ronchi rulings angularly displaced and placed close to the curvature radius of a mirror. The result obtained by superposing both Ronchigrams is our new pattern, a Moiré pattern of the Ronchigram (Moiré-Ronchigram). The Zernike aberration polynomial coefficients of the tridimensional wavefront for both mirrors are obtained as a result. We also compared the Zernike coefficients obtained for each of the mentioned techniques and we found that the results with less dispersion are those where Moiré deflectometry was applied. Finally, as a confidence test for applying and testing the Moiré-Ronchigram, we compare our results with Open Fringe, FringeXP, and APEX, using the root-mean-square and standard deviation values.

In this paper, we use the irradiance transport equation and the Fourier transform-based experimental solution given by Ichikawa-Lohmann-Takeda. We analyze experimental factors such as the digital filter, the introduced error for the rotation and period of the Ronchi ruling, and a new method is demonstrated for the measurement of 3D wavefront information.

Emerging technologies are being explored to improve extraction yields of phytochemicals or high-value biological compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extraction of lupeol, α-, and ß-amyrin from fruit, leaf and stem of the sea grape tree (Coccoloba uvifera L.) using technologies such as Ultrasound Assisted Extraction (UAE) and High Hydrostatic Pressure Extraction (HHPE). Results were compared to conventional extraction (maceration). Analysis with thin-layer chromatography revealed the presence of lupeol in all studied parts of the tree. Optimal extraction conditions for UAE and HHPE were found; the highest concentration of triterpenes was obtained by UAE after evaluating conventional and non-conventional techniques. Finally, analysis of different tree parts and other vegetable sources showed that the best source of triterpenes was the leaf.

Recently two emerging areas of research, attosecond and nanoscale physics, have started to come together. Attosecond physics deals with phenomena occurring when ultrashort laser pulses, with duration on the femto- and sub-femtosecond time scales, interact with atoms, molecules or solids. The laser-induced electron dynamics occurs natively on a timescale down to a few hundred or even tens of attoseconds (1 attosecond = 1 as = 10-18 s), which is comparable with the optical field. For comparison, the revolution of an electron on a 1s orbital of a hydrogen atom is ∼152 as. On the other hand, the second branch involves the manipulation and engineering of mesoscopic systems, such as solids, metals and dielectrics, with nanometric precision. Although nano-engineering is a vast and well-established research field on its own, the merger with intense laser physics is relatively recent. In this report on progress we present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical overview of physics that takes place when short and intense laser pulses interact with nanosystems, such as metallic and dielectric nanostructures. In particular we elucidate how the spatially inhomogeneous laser induced fields at a nanometer scale modify the laser-driven electron dynamics. Consequently, this has important impact on pivotal processes such as above-threshold ionization and high-order harmonic generation. The deep understanding of the coupled dynamics between these spatially inhomogeneous fields and matter configures a promising way to new avenues of research and applications. Thanks to the maturity that attosecond physics has reached, together with the tremendous advance in material engineering and manipulation techniques, the age of atto-nanophysics has begun, but it is in the initial stage. We present thus some of the open questions, challenges and prospects for experimental confirmation of theoretical predictions, as well as experiments aimed at characterizing the induced fields and the unique electron dynamics initiated by them with high temporal and spatial resolution.

Studies of strong field ionization have historically relied on the strong field approximation, which neglects all spatial dependence in the forces experienced by the electron after ionization. More recently, the small spatial inhomogeneity introduced by the long-range Coulomb potential has been linked to a number of important features in the photoelectron spectrum, such as Coulomb asymmetry, Coulomb focusing, and the low energy structure. Here, we demonstrate using midinfrared laser wavelength that a time-varying spatial dependence in the laser electric field, such as that produced in the vicinity of a nanostructure, creates a prominent higher energy peak. This higher energy structure (HES) originates from direct electrons ionized near the peak of a single half-cycle of the laser pulse. The HES is separated from all other ionization events, with its location and width highly dependent on the strength of spatial inhomogeneity. Hence, the HES can be used as a sensitive tool for near-field characterization in the "intermediate regime," where the electron's quiver amplitude is comparable to the field decay length. Moreover, the large accumulation of electrons with tuneable energy suggests a promising method for creating a localized source of electron pulses of attosecond duration using tabletop laser technology.

OBJECTIVE: A high ratio of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) to placental growth factor (PlGF) has been linked to pre-eclampsia (PE). We evaluated the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio as a predictive marker for early-onset PE in women at risk of PE. METHODS: This prospective, Spanish, multicenter study included pregnant women with a risk factor for PE, including intrauterine growth restriction, PE, eclampsia or hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count syndrome in previous pregnancy, pregestational diabetes or abnormal uterine artery Doppler. The primary objective was to show that the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio at 20, 24 and 28 weeks' gestation was predictive of early-onset PE (< 34 + 0 weeks). Serum sFlt-1 and PlGF were measured at 20, 24 and 28 weeks. Multivariate logistic regression was used to develop a predictive model. RESULTS: A total of 819 women were enrolled, of which 729 were suitable for analysis. Of these, 78 (10.7%) women developed PE (24 early onset and 54 late onset). Median sFlt-1/PlGF ratio at 20, 24 and 28 weeks was 6.3 (interquartile range (IQR), 4.1-9.3), 4.0 (IQR, 2.6-6.3) and 3.3 (IQR, 2.0-5.9), respectively, for women who did not develop PE (controls); 14.5 (IQR, 5.5-43.7), 18.4 (IQR, 8.2-57.9) and 51.9 (IQR, 11.5-145.6) for women with early-onset PE; and 6.7 (IQR, 4.6-9.9), 4.7 (IQR, 2.8-7.2) and 6.0 (IQR, 3.8-10.5) for women with late-onset PE. Compared with early-onset PE, the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio was significantly lower in controls (P < 0.001 at each timepoint) and in women with chronic hypertension (P < 0.001 at each timepoint), gestational hypertension (P < 0.001 at each timepoint) and late-onset PE (P < 0.001 at each timepoint). A prediction model for early-onset PE was developed, which included the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio plus mean arterial pressure, being parous and previous PE, with areas under the receiver-operating characteristics curves of 0.86 (95% CI, 0.77-0.95), 0.91 (95% CI, 0.85-0.97) and 0.93 (95% CI, 0.86-0.99) at 20, 24 and 28 weeks, respectively, and was superior to models using the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio alone or uterine artery mean pulsatility index. CONCLUSIONS: The sFlt-1/PlGF ratio can improve prediction of early-onset PE for women at risk of this condition. Copyright © 2017 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
