RESUMO

We report pump-probe measurements of a hydrogen molecule (H_{2}) in the tunnel junction of a scanning tunneling microscope coupled to ultrashort terahertz (THz) pulses. The coherent oscillation of the THz-induced dc tunneling current at a frequency of ∼0.5 THz fingerprints the absorption by H_{2} as a two-level system (TLS). Two components of the oscillatory signal are observed and point to both photon and field aspects of the THz pulses. A few loosely bound states with similar energies for the upper state of the TLS are evidenced by the coherent revival of oscillatory signal. Furthermore, the comparison of spectroscopic features of H_{2} with different tips provides an understanding of the TLS for H_{2}.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) poses a significant global health challenge, with symptom presentation potentially varying between adolescents and adults. Adolescence is a critical period marked by heightened vulnerability to interpersonal stresses, yet the impact of these stresses on the structure of depressive symptoms is not well understood. Recognizing the cultural nuances in how depression manifests among adolescents is crucial. To this end, this paper employs a network analysis approach, utilizing a comprehensive symptom checklist from the Multidimensional Depression Assessment Scale (MDAS). Our study investigates the role of interpersonal symptoms within the broader cluster of emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms and explores variations in adolescent groups in four Asian and European regions. METHODS: We recruited a diverse sample of 6,348 adolescents aged 12 to 18 from Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UK, China, and the Netherlands using the Qualtrics platform. Employing the Gaussian Graphical Model, we established a network model of depressive symptoms as measured by the MDAS, segregating the sample into Asian and European regions to examine the interconnections between them. The study focused on identifying central symptom nodes and comparing the network structures between the two groups. RESULTS: The analysis identified feeling worthless, low energy, being a burden to others, and low mood as central symptoms of depression. Notably, there were significant differences in the connections between depressive symptoms among Asian (Hong Kong, China and Taiwan) and European (UK and the Netherlands) adolescents, highlighting cultural variations in how interpersonal symptoms interact with emotional, cognitive, and somatic symptoms. CONCLUSION: This study is pioneering in applying network analysis to include interpersonal symptoms in examining depression among a diverse adolescent population. It demonstrates that interpersonal symptoms are integral to the central features of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, our findings suggest that, compared to their UK and Dutch peers, interpersonal symptoms in Asian adolescents are uniquely connected to other symptom clusters, reflecting distinct cultural patterns. LIMITATIONS: The study engaged a broad community sample; however, future research could benefit from including a larger sample size to allow for a more detailed analysis of a greater number of symptom nodes.

We report rectification spectroscopy (RS) for single molecules performed with continuous-wave terahertz (CW THz) radiation at the tunneling junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 8 K. CW THz-RS serves as a new technique in single-molecule vibrational and magnetic excitation spectroscopy besides inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). By quantitatively studying IETS and THz RS, we show that CW THz induces a sinusoidal bias modulation with amplitude linearly dependent on the THz far-field amplitude. Such THz-induced bias modulation amplitude appears to be sensitive to the THz beam alignment but insensitive to variation in the tunneling gap far smaller than the THz wavelength.

We report the manipulation of ultrafast quantum coherence of a two-level single hydrogen molecular system by employing static electric field from the sample bias in a femtosecond terahertz scanning tunneling microscope. A H_{2} molecule adsorbed on the polar Cu_{2}N surface develops an electric dipole and exhibits a giant Stark effect. An avoided crossing of the quantum state energy levels is derived from the resonant frequency of the single H_{2} two levels in a double-well potential. The dephasing time of the initial wave packet can also be changed by applying the electric field. The electrical manipulation for different tunneling gaps in three dimensions allows quantification of the surface electrostatic fields at the atomic scale. Our work demonstrated the potential application of molecules as controllable two-level molecular systems.

The phenomenon of rectification describes the emergence of a DC current from the application of an oscillating voltage. Although the origin of this effect has been associated with the nonlinearity in the current-voltage I(V) relation, a rigorous understanding of the microscopic mechanisms for this phenomenon remains challenging. Here, we show the close connection between rectification and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy and microscopy for single molecules with a scanning tunneling microscope. While both techniques are based on nonlinear features in the I(V) curve, comprehensive line shape analyses reveal notable differences that highlight the two complementary techniques of nonlinear conductivity spectromicroscopy for probing nanoscale systems.

The catalytic scission of single chemical bonds has been induced by the nanoscale confinement in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) junction. Individual hydrogen molecules sandwiched between the STM tip and a copper substrate can be dissociated solely by the reciprocating movement of the tip. The reaction rate depends sensitively on the local molecular environment, as exemplified by the effects of a nearby carbon monoxide molecule or a gold adatom. Detailed mechanisms and the nature of the transition states are revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work provides insights into chemical reactions at the atomic scale induced by localized confinement applied by the STM tip. Furthermore, a single diatomic molecule can act as a molecular catalyst to enhance the reaction rate on a surface.

The effectiveness of different treatment processes on assimilable organic carbon (AOC) removal and bacterial diversity variations was evaluated in a water treatment plant. The van der Kooij technique was applied for AOC analysis and responses of bacterial communities were characterized by the metagenomics assay. Results show that the AOC concentrations were about 93, 148, 43, 51, 37, and 38 µg acetate-C/L in effluents of raw water basin, preozonation, rapid sand filtration (RSF), ozonation, biofiltration [biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration], and chlorination (clear water), respectively. Increased AOC concentrations were observed after preozonation, ozonation, and chlorination units due to the production of biodegradable organic matters after the oxidation processes. Results indicate that the oxidation processes were the main causes of AOC formation, which resulted in significant increases in AOC concentrations (18-59% increment). The AOC removal efficiencies were 47, 28, and 60% in the RSF, biofiltration, and the whole system, respectively. RSF and biofiltration were responsible for the AOC treatment and both processes played key roles in AOC removal. Thus, both RSF and biofiltration processes would contribute to AOC treatment after oxidation. Sediments from the raw water basin and filter samples from RSF and BAC units were collected and analyzed for bacterial communities. Results from scanning electron microscope analysis indicate that bacterial colonization was observed in filter materials. This indicates that the surfaces of the filter materials were beneficial to bacterial growth and AOC removal via the adsorption and biodegradation mechanisms. Next generation sequencing analyses demonstrate that water treatment processes resulted in the changes of bacterial diversity and community profiles in filters of RSF and BAC. According to the findings of bacterial composition and interactions, the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria (41% in RSF and 56% in BAC) followed by Planctomycetes and Acidobacteria in RSF and BAC systems, which might affect the AOC biodegradation efficiency. Results would be useful in developing AOC treatment and management processes in water treatment plants.

The control of many-body quantum dynamics in complex systems is a key challenge in the quest to reliably produce and manipulate large-scale quantum entangled states. Recently, quench experiments in Rydberg atom arrays [Bluvstein et al. Science 371, 1355 (2021)SCIEAS0036-807510.1126/science.abg2530] demonstrated that coherent revivals associated with quantum many-body scars can be stabilized by periodic driving, generating stable subharmonic responses over a wide parameter regime. We analyze a simple, related model where these phenomena originate from spatiotemporal ordering in an effective Floquet unitary, corresponding to discrete time-crystalline behavior in a prethermal regime. Unlike conventional discrete time crystals, the subharmonic response exists only for Néel-like initial states, associated with quantum scars. We predict robustness to perturbations and identify emergent timescales that could be observed in future experiments. Our results suggest a route to controlling entanglement in interacting quantum systems by combining periodic driving with many-body scars.

A total of 170 bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea) accessions were evaluated using both simple sequence repeat (SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers generated using genotyping-by-sequencing (GbS), of which 56 accessions were collected from West and East Java. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), population structure, and cluster analysis suggest that the East Java accessions could be a result of the introduction of selected West Java accessions. In addition, the current Indonesian accessions were likely introduced from Southern Africa, which would have produced a very marked founding effect such that these accessions present only a fraction of the genetic variability that exists within this species.

Inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a powerful technique used to characterize the vibration and spin states at the single-molecule level. While IETS lacks hard selection rules, historically it has been assumed that vibrational overtones are rarely seen or even absent. Here we provide definitive experimental evidence that the hindered rotation overtone excitation of carbon monoxide molecules adsorbed on Ag(110) can be detected with STM-IETS via isotope substitution. We also demonstrate that the anharmonicity of the overtone excitation can be characterized and compared between adsorption sites and find evidence of anisotropy in the vibrational anharmonicity for CO adsorbed on the [11[over ¯]0] step edge.

The spin states of magnetic molecules have advantageous attributes as carriers of quantum information. However, spin-vibration coupling in molecules causes a decay of excited spin states and a loss of spin coherence. Here, we detect excitations of spin-vibration states in single nickelocene molecules on Ag(110) with a scanning tunneling microscope. By transferring a nickelocene to the tip, the joint spin-vibration states with an adsorbed nickelocene were measured. Chemical variations in magnetic molecules offer the opportunity to tune spin-vibration coupling for controlling the spin coherence.

We report the photoassisted activation of selected C─H bonds in individual molecules adsorbed on metal surfaces within the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope. Photons can couple to the C─H bond activation of specific hydrocarbons through a resonant photoassisted tunneling process. The molecule to be activated can be selected by positioning the tip with subangstrom resolution. Furthermore, structural tomography of the molecule and its dissociation products are imaged at different heights by the inelastic tunneling probe. The demonstration of single bond dissociation induced by resonant photoassisted tunneling electrons implies the attainment of atomic scale spatial resolution for bond-selected photochemistry.

The present study aimed to define a subtype of complex/monosomal karyotype (CK/MK) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by its distinct clinical features, p53 signaling and responses to p53 targeting agents. Ninety-eight young adults (range: 21-60 years; median: 49 years) with CK/MK AML were studied. They received standard induction, consolidation and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from siblings or matched unrelated donors if available. Chromosomal abnormalities most commonly affected chromosome 5 (30%), 7 (22%) and 17 (21%). Next generation sequencing of a 54-myeloid gene panel were available in 76 patients. Tumor protein 53 (TP53) mutations were most common (49%) and associated with the presence of -5/5q- (P < .001) and -17/17p- (P < .001), but not -7/7q- (P = .370). This "typical" CK/MK AML subtype was associated with significantly lower presenting white cell counts, higher number of karyotypic abnormalities, and inferior leukemia-free and overall survivals, compared with CK/MK AML without the typical features. Blood or bone marrow samples from typical CK/MK AML patients showed defective p53 signaling upon induction by etoposide. In vitro drug sensitivity analysis showed that they were sensitive to APR-246 that targeted mutant p53, but resistant to MDM2 antagonist MI-77301. Novel therapeutic strategies targeting TP53 mutations in CK/MK AML should be developed and tested in clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Identification of onychomycosis is mainly based on clinical diagnosis with auxiliary diagnostic methods such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) microscopy, periodic acid-Schiff staining or fungal culture. However, each method is limited by its sensitivity and specificity. AIM: To develop a new test method using the common fungal end product, ergosterol, and investigate if it can be used as a new diagnostic tool. METHODS: We collected consecutive data from 20 participants with nail problems. Following clinical diagnosis, samples were taken for KOH microscopy and for mass spectrometry (MS) to check for the presence of ergosterol. RESULTS: Of the 20 cases collected, 7 were positive for fungal infection by MS. Four of these were already suspected to have onychomycosis, whereas one of the remaining three subjects was presumed to have dry nail and the other two to have onycholysis. The MS test seemed to be better at detecting combinations of nail conditions. Conversely, of the five patients clinically diagnosed as having onychomycosis, four had a positive MS result, whereas the fifth had negative results on both KOH and MS. Two other participants had a positive KOH test and were also found to have positive MS results. CONCLUSION: Detection of the presence of ergosterol by MS seems to be a useful tool for confirming onychomycosis. However, further studies are needed to verify the sensitivity and specificity of this MS method.

The coupling between localized plasmon and molecular orbital in the light emission from a metallic nanocavity has been directly detected and imaged with sub-0.1 nm resolution. The light emission intensity was enhanced when the energy difference between the tunneling electrons and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of an azulene molecule matches the energy of a plasmon mode of the nanocavity defined by the Ag-tip and Ag (110) substrate of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The spatially resolved image of the light emission intensity matches the spatial distribution of the LUMO obtained by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results highlight the near-field coupling of a molecular orbital to the radiative decay of a plasmonic excitation in a confined nanoscale junction.

A Zn benzotriazolate metal-organic framework (MOF), [Zn(ZnO2CCH3)4(bibta)3] (1, bibta2- = 5,5'-bibenzotriazolate), has been subjected to a mild CH3CO2-/HCO3- ligand exchange procedure followed by thermal activation to generate nucleophilic Zn-OH groups that resemble the active site of α-carbonic anhydrase. The postsynthetically modified MOF, [Zn(ZnOH)4(bibta)3] (2*), exhibits excellent performance for trace CO2 capture and can be regenerated at mild temperatures. IR spectroscopic data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that intercluster hydrogen bonding interactions augment a Zn-OH/Zn-O2COH fixation mechanism.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is an uncommon cause of stroke with high morbidity and mortality rates from venous infarction, intracranial hemorrhage, and extensive cerebral edema. Endovascular treatment with various devices has been proposed as a salvage treatment when standard medical treatment with systemic anticoagulation is ineffective, especially in long segment dural sinus thrombosis. We describe our technique of transvenous endovascular aspiration thrombectomy with large bore thrombectomy catheters, followed by placement of microcatheter for local thrombolytic infusion at the site of thrombosis. We report a retrospective study of angiographic and clinical outcome of six consecutive patients treated with this approach. Endovascular aspiration thrombectomy with large bore catheters followed by continuous local thrombolytic infusion appeared to be a safe and effective salvage treatment for selected patients with cerebral dural venous sinus thrombosis refractory to medical treatment.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the predictive and prognostic significance of assessing early drug response with both positron-emission computerized tomography (PET-CT) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients receiving first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients had PET-CT and CTC analysis at baseline and 4-6 weeks after starting chemotherapy, and then a CT scan at 10-12 weeks to assess the Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors (RECIST) response. Early response was defined as achieving a dual-endpoint consisting of PET-CT (30% drop in the sum of maximum standard uptake values-SUVmax-of target lesions) and CTC response (CTC < 3 cells/7.5 ml blood) at 4-6 weeks after starting chemotherapy. RESULTS: About 84 patients were enrolled with a median follow-up of 32.9 months (95% confidence interval, CI, 24.5 months-not reached, NR), and 70 patients (84.3%) completed all assessments. Achieving an early response based on the dual-endpoint was independently associated with progression-free survival (hazard ratio, HR = 0.452, 95% CI 0.267-0.765). The median progression-free survival of early responders was 7.41 months (95% CI, 6.05-9.11) compared with 5.37 months (95% CI, 4.68-6.24) in non-responders (log-rank, P = 0.0167). RECIST response at 10 weeks was independently associated with overall survival (OS) (HR = 0.484, 95% CI, 0.275-0.852). Early response based on the dual-endpoint could predict the subsequent RECIST response with a sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive value of 64%, 70% and 74%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Early response based on both PET-CT and CTC analysis has prognostic and probably predictive significance in patients undergoing first-line chemotherapy for metastatic colorectal cancer. Its utility as a new tool for assessing early drug response should be further validated.
