AIMS: Ferroptosis is a form of iron-regulated cell death implicated in ischemic heart disease. Our previous study revealed that Sirtuin 3 (SIRT3) is associated with ferroptosis and cardiac fibrosis. In this study, we tested whether the knockout of SIRT3 in cardiomyocytes (SIRT3cKO) promotes mitochondrial ferroptosis and whether the blockade of ferroptosis would ameliorate mitochondrial dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions were isolated from the ventricles of mice. Cytosolic and mitochondrial ferroptosis were analyzed by comparison to SIRT3loxp mice. An echocardiography study showed that SIRT3cKO mice developed heart failure as evidenced by a reduction of EF% and FS% compared to SIRT3loxp mice. Comparison of mitochondrial and cytosolic fractions of SIRT3cKO and SIRT3loxp mice revealed that, upon loss of SIRT3, mitochondrial, but not cytosolic, total lysine acetylation was significantly increased. Similarly, acetylated p53 was significantly upregulated only in the mitochondria. These data demonstrate that SIRT3 is the primary mitochondrial deacetylase. Most importantly, loss of SIRT3 resulted in significant reductions of frataxin, aconitase, and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in the mitochondria. This was accompanied by a significant increase in levels of mitochondrial 4-hydroxynonenal. Treatment of SIRT3cKO mice with the ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) for 14 days significantly improved preexisting heart failure. Mechanistically, Fer-1 treatment significantly increased GPX4 and aconitase expression/activity, increased mitochondrial iron­sulfur clusters, and improved mitochondrial membrane potential and Complex IV activity. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of ferroptosis ameliorated cardiac dysfunction by specifically targeting mitochondrial aconitase and iron­sulfur clusters. Blockade of mitochondrial ferroptosis may be a novel therapeutic target for mitochondrial cardiomyopathies.

Observing finite regions of a bigger system is a common aim, from microscopy to molecular simulations. In the latter especially, there is ongoing interest in predicting thermodynamic properties from tracking fluctuations in finite observation volumes. However, kinetic properties have received little attention, especially not in ionic solutions, where electrostatic interactions play a decisive role. Here, we probe ionic fluctuations in finite volumes with Brownian dynamics and build an analytical framework that reproduces our simulation results and is broadly applicable to other systems with pairwise interactions. Particle number and charge correlations exhibit a rich phenomenology with time, characterized by a diversity of timescales. The noise spectrum of both quantities decays as 1/f3/2, where f is the frequency. This signature of fractional noise shows the universality of 1/f3/2 scalings when observing diffusing particles in finite domains. The hyperuniform behaviour of charge fluctuations, namely that correlations scale with the area of the observation volume, is preserved in time. Correlations even become proportional to the box perimeter at sufficiently long times. Our results pave the way to understand fluctuations in more complex systems, from nanopores to single-particle electrochemistry.

Seemingly unrelated experiments such as electrolyte transport through nanotubes, nano-scale electrochemistry, NMR relaxometry and surface force balance measurements, all probe electrical fluctuations: of the electric current, the charge and polarization, the field gradient (for quadrupolar nuclei) and the coupled mass/charge densities. The fluctuations of such various observables arise from the same underlying microscopic dynamics of the ions and solvent molecules. In principle, the relevant length and time scales of these dynamics are encoded in the dynamic structure factors. However, modelling the latter for frequencies and wavevectors spanning many orders of magnitude remains a great challenge to interpret the experiments in terms of physical processes such as solvation dynamics, diffusion, electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions between ions, interactions with solid surfaces, etc. Here, we highlight the central role of the charge-charge dynamic structure factor in the fluctuations of electrical observables in electrolytes and offer a unifying perspective over a variety of complementary experiments. We further analyze this quantity in the special case of an aqueous NaCl electrolyte, using simulations with explicit ions and an explicit or implicit solvent. We discuss the ability of the standard Poisson-Nernst-Planck theory to capture the simulation results, and how the predictions can be improved. We finally discuss the contributions of ions and water to the total charge fluctuations. This work illustrates an ongoing effort towards a comprehensive understanding of electrical fluctuations in bulk and confined electrolytes, in order to enable experimentalists to decipher the microscopic properties encoded in the measured electrical noise.

Biofilter (BF) has been regarded as a versatile gas treatment technology for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from contaminated gas streams. In order for BF to be utilized in the industrial setting, it is essential to conduct research aimed at removing VOC mixtures under different inlet loading conditions, i.e. as a function of the gas flow rate and inlet VOC concentrations. The main aim of this study was to apply artificial neural networks (ANN) and determine the relationship between flow rate (FR), pressure drop (PD), inlet concentration (C), and removal efficiency (RE) in the BF treating gas-phase benzene and xylene mixtures. The ANN model was trained and tested to assess the removal efficiency of benzene (REB) and xylene (REX) under the influence of different FR, PD and C. The model's performance was assessed using a cross-validation method. The REb varied from 20% to >60%, while the REx varied from 10% to 70% during the different experimental phases of BF operation. The causal index (CI) technique was used to determine the sensitivity of the input parameters on the output variables. The ANN model with a topology of 4-4-2 performed the best in terms of predicting the RE profiles of both the pollutants. Furthermore, the effect was more pronounced for xylene because an increase in the benzene concentration reduced xylene removal (CI = -25.7170) more severely than benzene removal. An increase in the xylene concentration had a marginally positive effect on the benzene removal (CI = +0.1178).

Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects of confinement, adsorption on surfaces, and ion-ion interactions on the response of confined electrolyte solutions to oscillating electric fields in the direction perpendicular to the confining walls. Nonequilibrium simulations allows to characterize the transitions between linear and nonlinear regimes when varying the magnitude and frequency of the applied field, but the linear response, characterized by the frequency-dependent conductivity, is more efficiently predicted from the equilibrium current fluctuations. To that end, we (rederive and) use the Green-Kubo relation appropriate for overdamped dynamics, which differs from the standard one for Newtonian or underdamped Langevin dynamics. This expression highlights the contributions of the underlying Brownian fluctuations and of the interactions of the particles between them and with external potentials. Although already known in the literature, this relation has rarely been used to date, beyond the static limit to determine the effective diffusion coefficient or the DC conductivity. The frequency-dependent conductivity always decays from a bulk-like behavior at high frequency to a vanishing conductivity at low frequency due to the confinement of the charge carriers by the walls. We discuss the characteristic features of the crossover between the two regimes, most importantly how the crossover frequency depends on the confining distance and the salt concentration, and the fact that adsorption on the walls may lead to significant changes both at high and low frequencies. Conversely, our results illustrate the possibility to obtain information on diffusion between walls, charge relaxation, and adsorption by analyzing the frequency-dependent conductivity.

Water is vital for life, and without it, biomolecules and cells cannot maintain their structures and functions. The remarkable properties of water originate from its ability to form hydrogen-bonding networks and dynamics, which the connectivity constantly alters because of the orientation rotation of individual water molecules. Experimental investigation of the dynamics of water, however, has proven challenging due to the strong absorption of water at terahertz frequencies. In response, by employing a high-precision terahertz spectrometer, we have measured and characterized the terahertz dielectric response of water from supercooled liquid to near the boiling point to explore the motions. The response reveals dynamic relaxation processes corresponding to the collective orientation, single-molecule rotation, and structural rearrangements resulting from breaking and reforming hydrogen bonds in water. We have observed the direct relationship between the macroscopic and microscopic relaxation dynamics of water, and the results have provided evidence of two liquid forms in water with different transition temperatures and thermal activation energies. The results reported here thus provide an unprecedented opportunity to directly test microscopic computational models of water dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common type of peripheral nerve compression. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming more popular in practice in the evaluation of CTS. PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic value of MRI in CTS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 39 wrists was conducted. Clinical and nerve conduction study findings were evaluated and graded according to the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. MRI was performed using a 1.5-T scanner. MRI parameters included cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve and the ratio change in CSA at four levels: distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ-CSA); pisiform (p-CSA); middle of the carpal tunnel (i-CSA); and hook of hamate. The ratio change in CSA was expressed as p-CSA/DRUJ-CSA and ΔCSA (difference between iCSA and DRUJ-CSA), the flattening ratio of the median nerve, the thickness of the flexor retinaculum, flexor retinaculum bowing ratio, signal intensity ratio of the median, nerve and hypothenar muscle signal intensity. RESULTS: With a cutoff point of 10.9 mm2 of the p-CSA, MRI had a sensitivity and specificity of 97.4% and 80% for diagnosis of CTS, respectively. There was a significant association between the clinical and electrophysiological stage with MRI findings (P < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between the BCTQ score and MRI parameters (0.5 < r < 0.7, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: MRI has good diagnostic value in evaluating CTS. We recommend using p-CSA ≥10.9 mm2 and ΔCSA ≥2.3 mm2 as MRI diagnostic criteria of CTS.

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is one of the main socioeconomic and financial centers of Vietnam. The city also faces serious air pollution. However, the city polluted with benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) has rarely been studied. We used positive matrix factorization (PMF) to analyze BTEX concentrations measured at two sampling locations to identify the main sources of BTEX in HCMC. The locations represented residential area (i.e., To Hien Thanh) and industrial area (i.e., Tan Binh Industrial Park). At the To Hien Thanh location, the average concentrations of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene were 6.9, 14.4, 4.9, and 12.7 µg/m3, respectively. At the Tan Binh location, the average concentrations of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene were 9.8, 22.6, 2.4, and 9.2 µg/m3, respectively. The results showed that PMF was a reliable model for source apportionment in HCMC. Traffic activities were the main sources of BTEX. Besides, industrial activities also contributed to BTEX emissions, especially the location near the industrial park. The majority of BTEXs at the To Hien Thanh sampling site come from traffic sources accounting for 56.2%. Activities from traffic and photochemical reactions (42.7%) and industrial sources (40.5%) were the main sources affecting BTEX emissions at the sampling site of Tan Binh Industrial Park. This study can be used as a reference for mitigation solutions to reduce the BTEX emission in HCMC.

Thickener, also known as a gelling agent, is a critical component of lubricating greases. The most critical property of thickener, temperature resistance, is determined by the molecular structure of the compounds. Currently, all high-temperature-resistant thickeners are based on 12-hydroxystearic acid, which is exclusively produced from castor oil. Since castor oil is also an important reagent for other processes, finding a sustainable alternative to 12-hydroxystearic acid has significant economic implications. This study synthesises an alternative thickener from abundant agricultural waste, cashew nut shell liquor (CNSL). The synthesis and separation procedure contains three steps: (i) forming and separating calcium anacardate by precipitation, (ii) forming and separating anacardic acid (iii) forming lithium anacardate. The obtained lithium anacardate can be used as a thickener for lubricating grease. It was found that the recovery of anacardic acid was around 80%. The optimal reaction temperature and time conditions for lithium anacardate were 100 °C and 1 h, respectively. The method provides an economical alternative to castor and other vegetable oils. The procedure presents a simple pathway to produce the precursor for the lubricating grease from agricultural waste. The first reaction step can be combined with the existing distillation of cashew nut shell processing. An effective application can promote CNSL to a sustainable feedstock for green chemistry. The process can also be combined with recycled lithium from the spent batteries to improve the sustainability of the battery industry.

Within 8 months, 3 children from 1 family in northern Vietnam died from melioidosis. Burkholderia pseudomallei of the same sequence type, 541, was isolated from clinical samples, borehole water, and garden and rice field soil. Boreholes should be properly constructed and maintained to avoid B. pseudomallei contamination.

OBJECTIVES: In March 2020, a COVID-19 outbreak in a major referral hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam led to 7664 patients and staff being sent into lockdown for 2 weeks, and more than 52,200 persons across 49 provinces being quarantined. We assessed SARS-CoV-2 transmission patterns during this to-date largest hospital outbreak in Vietnam using social network analysis (SNA). METHODS: We constructed a directed relational network and calculated network metrics for 'degree', 'betweenness', 'closeness' and 'eigenvector' centrality to understand individual-level transmission patterns. We analysed network components and modularity to identify sub-network structures with disproportionately big effects. RESULTS: We detected 68 connections between 46 confirmed cases, of whom 27 (58.7%) were ancillary support staff, 7 (15.2%) caregivers, 6 (13%) patients and 2 (4.4%) nurses. Among the 10 most important cases selected by each SNA network metric, transmission dynamics clustered in 17 cases, of whom 12 (70.6%) cases were ancillary support staff. Ancillary support staff also constituted 71.1% of cases in the dominant sub-network and 68.8% of cases in the three largest sub-communities. CONCLUSIONS: We identified non-clinical ancillary support staff, who are responsible for room service and food distribution in hospital wards in Vietnam, as a group with disproportionally big impacts on transmission dynamics during this outbreak. Our findings call for a holistic approach to nosocomial outbreak prevention and response that includes both clinical and non-clinical hospital staff. Our work also shows the potential of SNA as a complementary outbreak investigation method to better understand infection patterns in hospitals and similar settings.

BACKGROUND: Converging evidence indicates prolactin (PRL) and diabetes play an important role in the pathophysiology of cognitive impairment. However, little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the effects of PRL and diabetes on cognitive impairment. SUMMARY: We summarize and review the available literature and current knowledge of the association between PRL and diabetes on aspects of cognitive impairment. KEY MESSAGES: The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B pathway is central to the molecular mechanisms underlying how PRL and diabetes interact in cognitive impairment. Further work is needed to identify the interaction between PRL and diabetes, especially in the molecular aspects of cognitive impairment, which can suggest novel strategies for cognitive dysfunction treatment.

BACKGROUND: Prolactin (PRL) is one of the most diverse pituitary hormones and is known to modulate normal neuronal function and neurodegenerative conditions. Many studies have described the influence that PRL has on the central nervous system and addressed its contribution to neurodegeneration, but little is known about the mechanisms responsible for the effects of PRL on neurodegenerative disorders, especially on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). SUMMARY: We review and summarize the existing literature and current understanding of the roles of PRL on various PRL aspects of AD and PD. KEY MESSAGES: In general, PRL is viewed as a promising molecule for the treatment of AD and PD. Modulation of PRL functions and targeting of immune mechanisms are needed to devise preventive or therapeutic strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increasing evidence indicates that the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM)-1 amplifies chronic inflammation, as well as the roles of prolactin (PRL) and metformin (MET) in tau hyperphosphorylation. However, the associations among TREM-1, tau hyperphosphorylation, PRL expression, and MET in DM remain unclear. METHODS: Streptozotocin was used to induce experimental DM in C57BL/6N mice. MET was orally administered at a dose of 400 mg/kg body weight for 6 weeks prior to hippocampal collection in DM mice. Various parameters pertaining to the TREM-1 pathway, tau hyperphosphorylation, PRL, and related factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis demonstrated that the expression levels of TREM-1, DAP12, casp1, interleukin-1ß, Cox2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, pituitary transcriptional factor-1 (Pit-1), and PRL were significantly increased in the hippocampus of DM mice; the expression levels of these pro-inflammatory mediators, PRL receptor (PRLR) short or long (PRLR-S and PRLR-L), and PRL regulatory element-binding (Preb) protein in DM mice treated with MET (DM + MET) were significantly decreased compared with those in control (CON) mice. The levels of p-Tau and glycogen synthase kinase-3 in the DM group were significantly higher than those in the CON group and significantly lower than those in the DM + MET group. CONCLUSION: We confirmed the therapeutic potential of MET for both DM and neurodegeneration. Our findings shed new light on the effects of DM on the pathophysiology of AD via the TREM-1 pathway and PRL expression. Thus, an improved understanding of the TREM-1 pathway in hyperglycemic conditions, as well as PRL, Preb, Pit-1, PRLR-L, and PRLR-S gene expression in the liver, brain, and other sites, may help unravel the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and neurodegeneration.

INTRODUCTION: Prolactin (PRL) exerts inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties and is also thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). However, serum PRL levels in patients with NDs were inconsistent in the research literature. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the serum PRL levels in patients with NDs. METHODS: Electronic databases, including MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library database, clinicaltrials.gov, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, and reference lists of articles were searched up to December 31, 2020. Pooled standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated by fixed-effect or random-effect model analysis. RESULTS: A total of 36 comparisons out of 29 studies (3 RCTs and 26 case controls) focusing on NDs (including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease [HD], multiple sclerosis [MS], and epilepsy) were reported. The meta-analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference in serum PRL levels between patients with NDs and healthy controls (SMD = 0.40, 95% CI: -0.16 to 0.96, p = 0.16). Subgroup analysis showed that serum PRL levels in patients with HD and MS were higher than those of healthy controls. Furthermore, patients with NDs aged <45 years had higher serum PRL levels (SMD = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.16-1.78, p = 0.018) than healthy controls. High serum PRL levels were found in subgroups such as the microenzymatic method, Asia, and the Americas. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed serum PRL levels in patients with HD and MS were significantly higher than those in healthy controls. Serum PRL levels were associated with age, region, and detection method. Other larger sample studies using more uniform detection methods are necessary to confirm our results.

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are one of the most widely used nanomaterials nowadays. CuO NPs have numerous applications in biological processes, medicine, energy devices, environmental remediation, and industrial fields from nanotechnology. With the increasing concern about the energy crisis and the challenges of chemical and physical approaches for preparing metal NPs, attempts to develop modern alternative chemistry have gotten much attention. Biological approaches that do not produce toxic waste and therefore do not require purification processes have been the subject of numerous studies. Plants may be extremely useful in the study of biogenic metal NP synthesis. This review aims to shed more light on the interactions between plant extracts and CuO NP synthesis. The use of living plants for CuO NPs biosynthesis is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process. To date, the findings have revealed many aspects of plant physiology and their relationships to the synthesis of NPs. The current state of the art and potential challenges in the green synthesis of CuO NPs are described in this paper. This study found a recent increase in the green synthesis of CuO NPs using various plant extracts. As a result, a thorough explanation of green synthesis and stabilizing agents for CuO NPs made from these green sources is given. Additionally, the multifunctional applications of CuO NPs synthesized with various plant extracts in environmental remediation, sensing, catalytic reduction, photocatalysis, diverse biological activities, energy storage, and several organic transformations such as reduction, coupling, and multicomponent reactions were carefully reviewed. We expect that this review could serve as a useful guide for readers with a general interest in the plant extract mediated biosynthesis of CuO NPs and their potential applications.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) involved in the COVID-19 response might be at increased risk of developing depression, though evidence is scarce. We investigated effects of COVID-19-related work on changes in depression levels among CHWs in Vietnam and identified sub-groups among CHWs who are at particular risk of developing severe depression. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey among 979 CHWs who were involved in the COVID-19 response in Vietnam, in particular during the 2021 Tet holiday outbreak between January and March 2021. Respondents were asked to report depression symptoms at two-time points, before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic (average June to December 2019) and during the 2021 Tet holiday outbreak using the PHQ-9 mental health questionnaire. We estimated depression levels at both time points and developed univariate and multivariable logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) to explore the association between deterioration to high depression levels and selected risk factors. RESULTS: Median depression levels among CHWs in Vietnam doubled from 3 (IQR = 2-7) before COVID-19 to 6 (IQR = 3-9) on the PHQ-9 scale during the Tet holiday outbreak. The proportion with normal/minimal levels decreased from 77.1% (95% CI = 74.4-79.7) to 50.9% (95% CI = 47.7-54) (p-value < 0.001), while the proportion of CHWs with moderate, moderately severe, and severe depression levels increased 4.3, 4.5, and five-fold, respectively. Less sleep and poor sleep quality, working in unfavorable work environments, and being involved in contact tracing and the organization of quarantine for suspected cases were associated with an increased risk of deterioration to high depression levels. CONCLUSIONS: We found a substantial increase in overall depression levels among CHWs in Vietnam due to their COVID-19 related work and a particularly worrisome rise in CHWs suffering from severe depression. CHWs are an indispensable yet often overlooked cadre of work in many low- and middle-income countries and shoulder a heavy psychological burden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Targeted psychological support for CHWs is needed to improve their mental health and to ensure the sustainability of community-based health interventions during COVID-19 and future epidemics.

Double-strand breaks (DSBs) in nuclear DNA represents radiation-induced damage that has been identified as particularly deleterious. Calculating this damage using Monte Carlo track structure modeling could be a suitable indicator to better assess and anticipate the side-effects of radiation therapy. However, as already demonstrated in previous work, the geometrical description of the nucleus and the DNA content used in the simulation significantly influence damage calculations. Therefore, in order to obtain accurate results, this geometry must be as realistic as possible. In this study, a new geometrical model of an endothelial cell nucleus and DNA distribution according to the isochore theory are presented and used in a Monte Carlo simulation chain based on the Geant4-DNA toolkit. In this theory, heterochromatin and euchromatin compaction are distributed along the genome according to five different families (L1, L2, H1, H2, and H3). Each of these families is associated with a different hetero/euchromatin rate related to its compaction level. In order to compare the results with those obtained using a previous nuclear geometry, simulations were performed for protons with linear energy transfers (LETs) of 4.29 keV/µm, 19.51 keV/µm, and 43.25 keV/µm. The organization of the chromatin fibers at different compaction levels linked to isochore families increased the DSB yield by 6-10%, and it allowed the most affected part of the genome to be identified. These new results indicate that the genome core is more radiosensitive than the genome desert, with a 3-8% increase in damage depending on the LET. This work highlights the importance of using realistic distributions of chromatin compaction levels to calculate radio-induced damage using Monte Carlo simulation methods.

Can Tho city in the Mekong Delta is in the top ten areas affected by climate change. Therefore, assessing climate change impacts, social and economic activities require proposed solutions to respond to climate change. This study aims to (i) apply the MIKE 11 model (Hydrodynamic module and Advection-Dispersion module) to simulate the impacts of climate change scenarios on water resources in Can Tho city; (ii) calculate water balance in Can Tho city; and (iii) suggest climate change adaptation plan for sustainable social-economic activities of the city. The results show that when the rainfall changes due to climate change, the flow rate tends to decrease at high tide and increase at low tide. When the sea level rises due to climate change, the flow rate tends to increase at high tide and decrease at low tide. For 2030, the flow will decrease up to 15.6% and 14.3% at the low tide period for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 compared to the present, respectively. The flow will increase up to 63.5% and 58.9% at the high tide period for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 compared to the present, respectively. The water demand evaluation shows that the water resource reserve in Can Tho city meets water demands in current and future scenarios under climate change. While rainwater and groundwater can provide enough water in the rainy season, the city has to use surface water during the dry season due to a lack of rainwater. Of these, agriculture contributes the most water demands (85%). Eight adaptation measures to climate change for Can Tho city are developed from 2021 to 2050.

To search for compounds with antiprotozoal activity, effects of snake venoms on the ciliates Tetrahymena pyriformis was studied. T. pyriformis from subkingdom of Protozoa, including the protozoal pathogens, was used as a model organism to select the venoms that are the most active against parasitic protozoans. Various concentrations of venoms were added to the cells, and the cells that survived after 24 h were counted. Among the six snake species from the Viperidae family, the venom of the viper Vipera berus, which completely killed the cells at 49 µg/mL, was the most active. Among four species from the Elapidae family, the previously studied cobra venoms containing cytotoxins with strong antiprotozoal activity as well as the venom of krait Bungarus multicinctus (10 µg/mL) were the most active. The venoms of the pit vipers and Nikolsky's viper did not show any activity at 12.5 mg/mL. Thus, the venoms of V. berus and B. multicinctus are promising for the isolation of new antiprotozoal compounds.
