RESUMO

We present a detailed analysis of multiphysics simulation results to evaluate the threshold for catastrophic optical damage (COD) of high-power laser diodes under misaligned external optical feedback. Three different chip designs are investigated: the non-injecting mirror concept, the non-absorbing mirror concept and the introduction of an additional energy barrier within the waveguide near the front facet. Furthermore, a modification of the external resonator that promises a lower sensitivity towards misalignments is considered. The dependence of the COD threshold on the additional design parameters (bandgap change, modification length, focal length) and the impact of the different approaches on electro-optical efficiency as well as beam quality are analyzed. Compared to the initial design, the different chip design concepts promise an increase of the achievable output power by 8%, 27% and 27% respectively, whereas the modified resonator fully prevents feedback-induced failure.

RESUMO

We present significantly improved performance data of a diode-pumped Q-switched Alexandrite laser in single longitudinal mode operation developed as a beam source for resonance lidar systems. The average output power of the laser-operating at the potassium resonance at 770 nm with a linewidth below 10 MHz-could be increased by a factor of five to the Watt-level by means of an optimized resonator design and pump scheme. The pulse energy is 1.7 mJ with a beam quality of M2≤1.1 in both spatial directions at a repetition rate of 500 Hz.

RESUMO

We demonstrate nonlinear pulse compression by multi-pass cell spectral broadening (MPCSB) from 860 fs to 115 fs with compressed pulse energy of 7.5 µJ, average power of 300 W and close to diffraction-limited beam quality. The transmission of the compression unit is >90%. The results show that this recently introduced compression scheme for peak powers above the threshold for catastrophic self-focusing can be scaled to smaller pulse energies and can achieve a larger compression factor than previously reported. Good homogeneity of the spectral broadening across the beam profile is verified, which distinguishes MPCSB among other bulk compression schemes.

RESUMO

We demonstrate micro structuring of fused-silica laser mirror substrates by Inverse Laser Drilling. Slits of a width down to ~80 µm and circular holes with diameters down to ~50 µm have been structured into quarter-inch thick substrates. Except for chipping, the surface areas around these openings have not been irreversibly affected by the manufacturing process. The micro structured mirrors can be used for geometrical output coupling of coherent EUV radiation from cavity-enhanced high harmonic generation.

RESUMO

We present a continuous-wave (CW) intracavity frequency-doubled Yb:YAG laser providing 1030 and 515 nm output simultaneously. This laser system was designed for photothermal common-path interferometry to measure spatially resolved profiles of the linear absorption in dielectric media and coatings for visible or infrared light as well as of the nonlinear absorption for the combination of both. A Z-shape laser cavity was designed, providing a beam waist in which an LBO crystal was located for effective second-harmonic generation (SHG). Suitable frequency conversion parameters and cavity configurations were discussed to achieve the optimal performance of a diode-pumped CW SHG laser. A 12.4 W 1030 nm laser and 5.4 W 515 nm laser were developed simultaneously in our experiment.

RESUMO

We report on single-pass high-harmonic generation (HHG) with amplified driving laser pulses at a repetition rate of 20.8 MHz. An Yb:YAG Innoslab amplifier system provides 35 fs pulses with 20 W average power at 1030 nm after external pulse compression. Following tight focusing into a xenon gas jet, we observe the generation of high-harmonic radiation of up to the seventeenth order. Our results show that state-of-the-art amplifier systems have become a promising alternative to cavity-assisted HHG for applications that require high repetition rates, such as frequency comb spectroscopy in the extreme UV.

RESUMO

To use the full potential of composite parts, e.g., to reduce the structural weight of cars or airplanes, a greater focus is needed on the joining technology. Adhesive bonding is considered favorable, superior joining technology for these parts. Unfortunately, to provide a structural and durable bond, a surface pre-treatment is necessary. Due to its high integration potential in industrial process chains, laser radiation can be a very efficient tool for this purpose. Within the BMBF-funded (German Federal Ministry of Education and Research) project GEWOL, a laser source that emits radiation at 3 µm wavelength (which shows significant advantages in theory) was developed for a sensitive laser-based bonding pre-treatment. Within the presented study, the developed laser source was compared with conventional laser sources emitting radiation at 355 nm, 1064 nm, and 10,600 nm in terms of application for a composite bonding pre-treatment. With the different laser sources, composites were treated, analytically tested, subsequently bonded, and mechanically tested to determine the bonding ability of the treated specimens. The results show a sensitive treatment of the surface with the developed laser source, which resulted in a very effective cleaning, high bonding strengths (over 32 MPa), and a good effectiveness compared with the conventional laser sources.

RESUMO

To date, a number of in vivo cytogenetic assays have studied the clastogenicity (chromosome aberrations, micronuclei formation) in bone marrow of rodents exposed to styrene by various routes. The majority of all these cytogenetic experiments yielded negative findings (Scott and Preston, Mutat Res 318:175-203, 1994). Recently published data from a micronucleus test in mice exposed via inhalation for up to 21 days showed some positive response, but was not fully conclusive (Vodicka et al., Chem Biol Interact 137:213-227, 2001). Since this exposure regimen has considerable relevance for workplace exposure, the present study was performed to further elucidate these findings. NMRI mice were exposed by whole body inhalation to styrene concentrations of 750 mg/m3 and 1,500 mg/m3 for 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 consecutive days (6 h/day). Animals were killed directly after exposure and bone marrow was sampled for analysis of micronucleus induction. Under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation, there was no evidence of clastogenicity at any concentration or exposure interval.
