RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nurses face substantial career challenges arising from global pandemics, economic crises, and their roles in conflict-ridden areas. In this context, the rights of nurses pertaining to decent work, such as freedom, fairness, safety, and dignity, are not adequately safeguarded. This study examines decent work status among Chinese nurses and its links to demographics, work engagement, and turnover intention. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was used following STROBE guidelines. Through a convenient sampling method, a total of 476 nurses were surveyed. These participants were drawn from three esteemed tertiary Grade A hospitals in Hangzhou, with data collection spanning from June to August in 2023. We used a comprehensive set of assessment instruments, encompassing an evaluation of demographic characteristics, the Decent Work Perceptions Scale (DWPS), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UEWS), and turnover intention questionnaire. Bootstrapping procedures were used to ensure the robustness and reliability of the model. RESULTS: The study revealed that nurses' perceptions of decent work significantly impacted work engagement (ß = 0.603, p < 0.001) and turnover intention (ß = -0.275, p < 0.001). Work engagement operated as a mediator between decent work and turnover intention, decreasing the likelihood of nurses leaving their positions (ß = -0.062, p < 0.001). Factors such as age, years of working experience, professional title, job category, and attendance at professional conferences significantly influenced nurses' perceptions of decent work (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study examines factors affecting decent work among nurses and explores its connection with work engagement and the intention to leave. Despite limitations (sample, social desirability bias), the study offers valuable insights for nursing practice. This suggests managers improve decent work for young nurses through rational shift schedules and continuous education. Policymakers should consider adjusting nursing policies for better employment conditions.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to assess the potential mediating roles of nurses' job satisfaction and burnout in the association between decent work and turnover intention. BACKGROUND: There is a global challenge of nursing shortages in healthcare systems worldwide. Decent work is crucial for safeguarding the rights and professional development outcomes of nurses. However, there is currently limited research on decent work among nurses, and there is a lack of studies exploring the relationships between nurses' decent work, job satisfaction, burnout, and turnover intention. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was employed with a sample of 460 nurses from three hospitals: The Affiliated Hospital of Hangzhou Normal University, Hangzhou Third People's Hospital, and Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital. The STROBE checklist was used. Mediation analysis using the PROCESS Macro was used to examine the relationships between decent work, job satisfaction, burnout, and turnover intention. RESULTS: The results showed that nurses' perception of decent work directly influences their turnover intention. Additionally, these findings strongly support the role of job satisfaction and burnout as mediating factors in the relationship between decent work and turnover intention. CONCLUSIONS: Decent work reduces nurse burnout and turnover intention of enhancing their job satisfaction. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: This study's findings have important implications for healthcare organizations and policymakers. Recognizing the pivotal role of decent work in nurses' job satisfaction and well-being can guide the development of strategies to improve working conditions and reduce turnover rates. It is imperative for healthcare institutions to prioritize creating safe, supportive, and equitable work conditions for nurses, as this can contribute to higher job satisfaction and, subsequently, lower turnover rates.

RESUMO

Quantitative evaluation of spatial brightness has been difficult, mainly due to the lack of a metric that is both highly related to subjective evaluation and convenient to measure in the field. This work investigated the applicability of using indirect corneal illuminance to evaluate spatial brightness for a visual field in interior spaces. Three lighting scenes with different patterns of lighting distribution, which all delivered indirect light to the subjects, were compared against each other in pairs for spatial brightness. The corresponding indirect corneal illuminance required for each test scene to match the spatial brightness of the reference scene with a fixed corneal illuminance was obtained. The results showed that our proposed metric had a high correlation with subjective evaluation of spatial brightness even under very different patterns of lighting distribution. Furthermore, the proposed metric was compared with the prior metrics of MRSE and Lav,B40 in spatial brightness evaluation, and the former showed the best correlation with subjective judgments. Since the spatial brightness assessment for various visual fields together compose people's overall impression of an illuminated space, the proposed metric of indirect corneal illuminance, which combines both accuracy and convenience in measurement, could serve as a preferred metric for spatial brightness evaluation.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the relationship among moral distress, psychological capital, and burnout in registered nurses. ETHICAL CONSIDERATION: The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the School of Nursing, Hangzhou Normal University (Approval no. 2022001). METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted with a convenience sample of 397 nurses from three Grade-A tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China. Participants completed demographic information, the Nurses' Moral Distress Scale, the Nurses' Psychological Capital Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory Scale. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis, structural equation modeling, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: The study found that moral distress and burnout are positively correlated, while psychological capital is negatively correlated with both moral distress and burnout. The path analysis in structural equation modeling revealed that moral distress has a significant direct effect on psychological capital, while psychological capital has a significant direct effect on burnout. In addition, moral distress also had a significant indirect effect on burnout through psychological capital. Moreover, both the direct effect of moral distress on burnout and the total effect of moral distress on burnout were significant. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that psychological capital plays an important role in the relationship between moral distress and burnout. Promoting psychological capital among nurses may be a promising strategy for preventing moral distress and burnout in the workplace.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to determine whether the self-enhancement effect of voice attractiveness evaluation is due to general self-positivity bias and/or the familiarity effect. The participants were asked to rate the attractiveness of their own voice, a friend's voice and strangers' voices. In addition, a self-reference valence (SR-valence) task was adopted in the experiment. Significant self-enhancement effects in voice attractiveness ratings were demonstrated, regardless of whether the participants recognized their self-voice or not. However, the friend-enhancement effect was found in only those participants who successfully recognized their friend's voice. Moreover, a significant correlation was found between self-positivity bias in the SR-valence task and the self-enhancement effect (but not the friend-enhancement effect). Our findings suggest that both the familiarity effect and self-positivity bias account for the vocal self-enhancement effect, and the influence of self-positivity bias could be implicit. The present study thus provides empirical evidence to clarify the potential explanations for the self-enhancement of voice attractiveness assessment.

RESUMO

The effects and mechanisms of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the development of sepsis-induced lung injury is not well understood. In our present study, we studied the mtDNA effects in sepsis-induced lung injury model, in vitro and in vivo. Compared with the Normal group, the lung histopathological score, the number of positive apoptosis cell, wet/dry (W/D) ratio and TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 concentrations of lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) and mtDNA groups were significantly increased (P < 0.001, respectively). Meanwhile, the lung histopathological score, positive W/D ratio, number of apoptosis cell and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1ß, and IL-6 concentrations of LPS + mtDNA and small interfering RNA (siRNA)-NC + LPS + mtDNA groups were significantly upregulated compared with those of LPS group (P < 0.05, respectively). However, the lung histopathological score, the number of positive apoptosis cell, W/D ratio and TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 concentrations were significantly improved within the toll-like receptor (TLR9)siRNA + LPS + mtDNA group compared with the LPS group (P < 0.01, respectively). The TLR9, MyD88, and NF-κB proteins or gene expressions of the LPS group and mtDNA group were significantly upregulated compared with those of Normal group by Western blot analysis or immunohistochemistry assay (P < 0.01, respectively), and the TLR9, MyD88, and NF-κB proteins or gene expressions of LPS + mtDNA and siRNA-NC + LPS + mtDNA groups were significantly enhanced compared with those of LPS group (P < 0.05, respectively). However, the TLR9, MyD88, and NF-κB proteins or gene expressions of TLR9siRNA + LPS + mtDNA group were significantly suppressed compared with those of the LPS group (P < 0.01, respectively). In conclusion, mtDNA could provoke lung injury induced by sepsis via regulation of TLR9/MyD88/NF-κB pathway in vitro and in vivo.

RESUMO

In this work, an efficient strategy is designed for the precise synthesis of novel Janus star-like copolymer (polystyrene)8 -b-(poly(l-lactide))8 , (PLLA)8 -b-(PS)8 , consisting of two types of chemically distinct polymer arms, PS and PLLA, in an asymmetric structure. During the synthesis, PLLA hemisphere carrying protected hydroxyl groups at the focal point was first synthesized via a combined reactions of esterification, light-induced "Click" chemistry, and ring opening polymerization (ROP) using a specially designed dendron as initiator. After removing the protecting moiety, the terminal hydroxyl groups on the dendron segment is increased fourfold and further modified into bromopropionate-based macroinitiator through a two-step end group transformation reaction, followed by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene to obtain the desired (PLLA)8 -b-(PS)8 Janus star-like copolymer. The versatility and efficiency of the designed synthetic strategy are demonstrated by the well-defined molecular characteristics and high yields of the targeted product. In addition to the controlled degradation behavior of the PLLA segments, the remaining bromide groups located at the distal end of PS arms could allow for further fabrication of diverse building blocks through consecutive ATRP of various monomers. This work signifies the first time for facile and precise synthesis of Janus star-like copolymer with unique biphasic structure and function control.

RESUMO

To directly investigate the reciprocal causal relationship of the conceptual and affective meaning of words, two priming experiments were conducted with the lexical decision task. In Experiment 1, the influence of semantic relatedness on the affective priming effect was explored by manipulating the semantic associative strength between the prime and target words (i.e., high vs. low) while keeping the affective association between them constant (i.e., affectively congruent). In Experiment 2, the influence of the affective meaning on the semantic priming effect was explored by manipulating the emotional congruency of the prime and target words (i.e., congruent vs. incongruent) while keeping the semantic association between them constant (i.e., high associative strength). The results of Experiment 1 showed that when the semantic associative strength between the prime and target words was high, there was a significant affective priming effect, while no significant affective priming effect was found when the associative strength was low. The results of Experiment 2 revealed that in both the emotionally congruent and incongruent conditions, a significant semantic priming effect was obtained. These findings suggest that conceptual meaning is a more obligatory representation in words and that the processing of the affective meaning is constrained by the conceptual meaning of words.

RESUMO

Developing naturally-derived wound dressing materials with intrinsic therapeutic effects is desirable for the clinical applications. Recently, guanosine-based supramolecular G-quadruplex (G4) hydrogel exhibited great potential in preparing biological materials due to its simple fabrication method and responsive gel networks. However, the weak mechanical properties and the consequent burst release of bioactive molecules restrict its clinical applications. Herein, we found that konjac glucomannan (KGM) with immunoregulatory effect did not affect the self-assembly of G-quadruplexes and thus effectively enhancing the mechanical properties of G4 hydrogel. Aloin, as a model drug, was in situ loaded into gel networks, finally obtaining the G4/Aloin-KGM hydrogel. This hydrogel exhibited porous morphology, swelling ability and hemostatic capability. Boronate bonds in G4 networks and aloin collectively endowed the hydrogel with excellent antioxidant performance. Meanwhile, aloin also provided outstanding in vitro and in vivo bactericidal ability. The wounds treated with this biocompatible hydrogel demonstrated faster regeneration of epithelial and dermal tissues, and the whole wound healing stages were accelerated by promoting collagen deposition, facilitating macrophage polarization towards M2 phenotype, down-regulating the expression level of IL-6, and up-regulating the expression level of IL-10, CD31 and α-SMA.

RESUMO

The present study aims to explore the influence of emotional context on word evaluation. Participants were asked to read an "adjective + noun" phrase, where the adjective could be a positive or negative word, and the noun could be a positive, neutral or negative word, and then to make an emotional evaluation on the emotional tone of the target noun based on a 9-point Likert scale. In a control condition, an isolated noun was presented with no context. Results showed that positive context made the evaluation of target words bias toward positive tone, while negative context shaped the evaluation of target words toward negative tone. The modulatory effect of negative context was greater than that of positive context in shaping evaluation of emotional words with opposite valence. Moreover, the modulatory effect of emotional context was constrained by the inherent meaning of target word. The present study demonstrated the flexibility as well as the relative stability of emotional meaning of word.

RESUMO

Facile preparation of multifunctional hydrogel wound dressings with inherent versatile properties is highly desirable in practical healthcare. Here, a biocompatible hydrogel was designed and fabricated via mild enzymatic crosslinking and polymerization. We first designed an enzymatic system containing horseradish peroxidase (HRP), H2O2, and the macromolecular initiator-acetoacetyl polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-ACAC), which can generate active PVA-ACAC carbon radicals via HRP-mediated oxidation by H2O2. Trimethylammonium chloride (Q), methacryloyl (MA) and phenol (Ph)-grafted carboxymethyl chitosan (Ph-QCMCS-MA) was then synthesized. HRP catalyzes the oxidation of phenol groups to achieve the fast phenol crosslinking, and PVA-ACAC carbon radicals initiate the polymerization of MA groups simultaneously, finally obtaining the target PPQM gel. The quaternary ammonium and phenol groups endow the PPQM gel with excellent antibacterial and antioxidant properties, respectively. This multifunctional hydrogel, which has additional adhesive and hemostatic properties, could promote wound healing processes in an in vivo full-thickness skin defect experiment by reducing the generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6) and upregulating anti-inflammatory factors (IL-10) and angiogenesis-related cytokines (VEGF and α-SMA). As a result, it could be used as competitive wound dressings.

RESUMO

Bacterial infection, oxidative stress and inflammation are the main obstacles in wound healing. Hydrogels with moist and inherent properties are beneficial to wound healing. Here, we fabricated a honokiol-laden micelle-crosslinked hyaluronate-based hydrogel by simply mixing honokiol-laden PF127-CHO micelles, 3,3'-dithiobis(propionohydrazide) grafted hyaluronic acid and silver ions. PF127 could not only effectively load hydrophobic small molecules but also be macromolecular crosslinker for preparing hydrogels. Hyaluronic acid plays an essential role in wound healing processes including regulating macrophage polarization towards M2 phenotype. The chemical dynamic acylhydrazone crosslinking and physical crosslinking among PF127-CHO micelles constructed hydrogel's networks, which endowed hydrogel with excellent self-healing properties. PF-HA-3 hydrogel also exhibited outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial capabilities. In a full-thickness skin defect model, this degradable and biocompatible hydrogel could promote wound healing by remodeling wound tissues, regulating M2 polarization and angiogenesis. In summary, this inherent multifunctional hydrogel will provide a promising strategy for designing bioactive compounds-based wound dressings.

RESUMO

The design and facile preparation of the smart hydrogel wound dressings with inherent excellent antioxidant and antibacterial capacity to effectively promote wound healing processes is highly desirable in clinical applications. Herein, a series of multifunctional hydrogels were prepared by the dynamic Schiff base and boronate ester crosslinking among phenylboronic acid (PBA) grafted carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), polyphenols and Cu2+-crosslinked polyphenol nanoparticles (CuNPs). The dynamic crosslinking bonds endowed hydrogels with excellent self-healing and degradable properties. Three polyphenols including tannic acid (TA), oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG) contributed to the outstanding antibacterial and antioxidant abilities of these hydrogels. The tissue adhesive capacity of hydrogels gave them good hemostatic effect. Through a full-thickness skin defect model of mice, these biocompatible hydrogels could accelerate wound healing processes by promoting granulation tissue formation, collagen deposition, M2 macrophage polarization and cytokine secretion, demonstrating that these natural-derived hydrogels with inherent physiological properties and low-cost preparation approaches could be promising dressing materials.

RESUMO

Starch can be used in diverse fields because it is a readily available, non-toxic polysaccharide with adaptable functionality and biodegradability. In this study, taking the aforementioned characteristics into consideration, we designed a modified starch (Starch-SB), which serves as supporting material for palladium stabilization. This new air and moisture-stable robust palladium composite [Starch-SB-Pd(II)] was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, XPS, SEM, EDX, TEM, CP/MAS 13C NMR, and ICP-MS analytical techniques. The catalytic studies exhibit high activity (up to 99 %) and stability in Suzuki cross-coupling reactions for this starch supported catalytic system under mild conditions (lower reaction temperature and green solvents) because of the cooperative interactions of multifunctional capturing sites on starch (Schiff base, hydroxy and amine groups) with palladium species. The experiments on reusability demonstrate that Starch-SB-Pd(II), which was prepared from functionalized starch, could be readily recycled several cycles through centrifugation. Moreover, we proposed a possibly multifunctional complex structure. This work presents an appealing and intriguing pathway for the utilization of polysaccharide as crucial support in green chemical transformations.

RESUMO

Skin wound management faces significant clinical challenges, including continuous bacterial infection and inflammation. Therefore, developing removable hydrogel dressings with intrinsic multifunctional properties is highly desirable. In this study, a body temperature-induced adhesive and removable hydrogel was designed to treat skin defect wounds. The HA/Gel-R-Ag hybrid gel was prepared by incorporating a silver ion-crosslinked sulfhydryl hyaluronate/gelatin-based polymeric gel network into a supramolecular rhein gel network, thereby significantly enhancing its mechanical properties. Temperature-responsive gelatin chains give the hybrid gel reversible tissue adhesiveness and detachment, thus avoiding secondary injury to wounds when changing the hydrogels. The hybrid gel exhibited excellent bactericidal ability owing to the antibacterial capacity of the silver ions and rhein. Moreover, both HA and rhein endowed the hybrid gel with immunoregulatory effects by promoting macrophage polarization from pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype. In a full-thickness skin defect mouse mode, this porous, degradable, and biocompatible HA/Gel-R-Ag hybrid gel boosted skin regeneration by inhibiting inflammation and promoting collagen deposition and angiogenesis. It is thus a simple method for widening the application range of mechanically weak rhein gels and providing a promising wound dressing material with multiple intrinsic functions for treating skin wounds.

RESUMO

Objective: Nurses constitute the largest group of healthcare workers worldwide, and job burnout is very common among them. This study aims to explore abnormal future thinking in nurses with burnout. Additionally, the study investigates whether these manifestations worsen as burnout progresses. Methods: The study was conducted in inpatient ward nurses at a tertiary hospital in Hangzhou, China. In the first phase, two group of nurses were recruited: nurses with burnout (N = 70) and nurses without burnout (N = 70). In the second phase, three groups were recruited according to the burnout levels: mild burnout (N = 43), moderate burnout (N = 42) and severe burnout (N = 43). Data on job burnout were obtained using the Chinese Maslach Burnout Inventory. The Sentence Completion for Events in the Future Test (SCEFT) was employed to measure the content of future thinking, which was evaluated by two raters in terms of the specificity, emotional valence, and concrete content of the imagined future events. The proportions of specific types of events among all the produced events were calculated. Results: The results revealed that nurses with burnout, compared to nurses without burnout, imagined fewer specific future events, positive events, and events related to relationships and achievement. They also had more omissions. As the level of burnout increased, their impairment in future thinking worsened. Furthermore, the results also revealed that the scores of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment had significant correlations with the proportions of positive events and events related to relationships and achievement/mastery in nurses' future thinking content. Conclusion: The future thinking ability of nurses with burnout was impaired, and this impairment worsened as the symptoms of burnout progressed. The findings of the present study have important implications for nurse caring and advocate effective interventions targeting positive future thinking to mitigate nurses' burnout.

RESUMO

Immunotherapy is an effective adjunct to surgery for preventing tumor recurrence and metastasis in postoperative tumor patients. Although mimicking microbial invasion and immune activation pathways can effectively stimulate the immune system, the limited capacity of microbial components to bind antigens and adjuvants restricts the development of this system. Here, we construct bionic yeast carriers (BYCs) by in situ polymerization of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) within the yeast capsules (YCs). BYCs can mimic the yeast infection pathway while utilizing the loading capacity of MSNs for multiple substances. Pore size and hydrophobicity-modified BYC can be loaded with both antigen and adjuvant R848. Oral or subcutaneous injection uptake of coloaded BYCs demonstrated positive therapeutic effects as a tumor therapeutic vaccine in both the transplantation tumor model and the metastasis tumor model. 57% of initial 400 mm3 tumor recurrence models are completely cured with coloaded BYCs via combination therapy with surgery, utilizing surgically resected tumors as antigens. The BYCs construction and coloading strategy will provide insights and optimistic approaches for the development of effective and controllable cancer vaccine carriers.

RESUMO

Designing wound dressings with inherent multifunctional therapeutic effects is desirable for clinical applications. Herein, a series of multifunctional carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)-based hydrogels were fabricated by the facile urate oxidase (UOX)-horseradish peroxidase (HRP) cascade enzymatic crosslinking system. For the first time, the cascade enzymatic crosslinking system was not only used for preparing hydrogel wound dressings but also for accelerating wound healing due to the activity retention of the self-compartmental enzymes. A CMCS derivative (HCMCS-mF) synthesized by successively grafting 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (H) and 5-methylfurfural (mF) on CMCS and a quaternary ammonium crosslinker (QMal) with terminal grafting maleimide (Mal) groups were combined with enzymatic system for the facile preparation of hydrogels. The mild Diels-Alder (DA) crosslinking reaction between mF and Mal groups constructed the first network of hydrogels. The cascade UOX-HRP system mediated the oxidative crosslinking of phenols thus forming the second gel network. Self-entrapped UOX maintained its enzymatic activity and could continuously catalyze the oxidation of uric acid, generating therapeutic allantoin. These porous, degradable, mechanically stable hydrogels with excellent antioxidant performance and enhanced antibacterial capacity could effectively accelerate skin wound repair by simultaneously reducing oxidative stress, relieving inflammation, promoting collagen deposition and upregulating the expression level of CD31.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The present meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various non-pharmacological interventions on comorbid emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation (ED) in children and adults with ADHD. METHOD: Forty-four randomized controlled trials (23 studies with ADHD children and 21 studies with ADHD adults) were included. Risk of bias, heterogeneity assessment, and subgroup analyses were conducted. RESULTS: We found that therapies targeting the relationship between children and others (i.e., parent-training [on ED and depression] and social skills training [on ED]) were efficacious in the treatment of emotional symptoms in children with ADHD at post-intervention. As for adults with ADHD, cognitive behavioral therapy was found to be effective for the improvement of emotional symptoms at both post-intervention and follow-up. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate that the efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions varies substantially across children and adults with ADHD. These results provide important implications for the selection of non-pharmacological interventions for children with ADHD.

RESUMO

Hydrogel wound dressings have attracted intense and increasing interest for their extracellular matrix like properties and bioactive material delivery ability. Various functional hydrogels loaded with metals (and their oxides), antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents have been prepared to realize antioxidant, bactericidal and anti-inflammatory effects, accelerating wound healing. Nevertheless, it is still a big challenge to facilely fabricate hydrogel wound dressings with inherent desirable properties to promote wound healing and avoid some drawbacks such as toxicity of metals and drug resistance. Herein, we facilely prepared a series of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG)-crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan-based hydrogels (EP gels) with inherent antioxidant, bactericidal and adhesive properties. Gluconate-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG-glu) was introduced into gel networks to enhance the mechanical properties. The hydrogels are constructed via borate ester crosslinking between phenylboronic acid (PBA) groups of PBA-grafted carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS-PBA) and diol groups of EGCG and PEG-glu. The hydrogels exhibited excellent self-healing properties, desirable mechanical and adhesive strength, free radical scavenging capability and outstanding bactericidal ability against S. aureus and E. coli. In the subsequent full-thickness skin defect model of mice, EP1 gel could promote the proliferation and remodeling process such as the regeneration of epidermis, dermis, and skin appendages, deposition of collagen, and upregulation of the VEGF level, thereby accelerating the healing of damaged skin. Overall, we facilely prepared polysaccharide-based hydrogels with inherent desirable properties as promising dressings for wound repair.
