Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a frequent complication of pregnancy. The specific mechanisms underlying GDM have not yet been fully elucidated. Contemporary research indicates a potential association between liver enzyme irregularities and an increased risk of metabolic disorders, including diabetes. The alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is recognized as a sensitive marker of liver injury. An increase in ALT levels is hypothesized to be linked to the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and diabetes. Nonetheless, the definitive causal link between ALT levels and GDM still needs to be determined. This investigation utilized two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine the genetic causation between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and GDM. We acquired alanine aminotransferase (ALT)-related GWAS summary data from the UK Biobank, Million Veteran Program, Rotterdam Study, and Lifeline Study. Gestational diabetes data were obtained from the FinnGen Consortium. We employed various MR analysis techniques, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median, simple, and weighted weighting. In addition to MR-Egger intercepts, Cochrane's Q test was also used to assess heterogeneity in the MR data, and the MR-PRESSO test was used to assess horizontal pleiotropy. To assess the association's sensitivity, a leave-one-out approach was employed. The IVW results confirmed the independent risk factor for GDM development, as indicated by the ALT level (p = .011). As shown by leave-one-out analysis, horizontal pleiotrophy did not significantly skew the causative link (p > .05). Our dual-sample MR analysis provides substantiated evidence of a genetic causal relationship between alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) poses significant risks to maternal and fetal health. Current diagnostic methods based on glucose tolerance tests have limitations for early detection. tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) have emerged as potential molecular regulators in various diseases, including metabolic disorders. However, the diagnostic value of tsRNAs in plasma for early GDM or postpartum remains unclear. METHODS: This longitudinal study profiled the expression of tsRNAs across different gestational stages and postpartum in women with GDM (n = 40) and healthy control gestational women (HCs, n = 40). High-throughput small RNA sequencing identified candidate tsRNAs, which were then validated and correlated with clinical biochemical markers such as fasting blood glucose (FBG), HOMA-IR, and GHbA1c. RESULTS: tRF-1:32-Val-AAC-1-M6, tRF-1:31-Glu-CTC-1-M2, and tRF-1:30-Gly-CCC-1-M4 were consistently upregulated in the GDM group compared to HCs during the second trimester (p < 0.05). Only tRF-1:31-Glu-CTC-1-M2 was highly expressed during the first trimester, and tRF-1:30-Gly-CCC-1-M4 increased during postpartum. tRF-1:31-Glu-CTC-1-M2 showed a significant correlation with FBG levels in the first trimester (R = 0.317, p = 0.047). The expression of tRF-1:30-Gly-CCC-1-M4 was significantly correlated with HOMA-IR (r = 0.65, p < 0.001) and GHBA1c (r = 0.33, p = 0.037) during postpartum. A joint diagnostic model incorporating tsRNAs expression and clinical markers demonstrated enhanced predictive power for GDM (ROC AUC = 0.768). CONCLUSION: Our results revealed distinct expression patterns of specific tsRNAs in GDM, showcasing their correlation with key metabolic parameters. This underscores their promising role as biomarkers for early prediction and diagnosis of GDM. The integration of tRFs into a composite biomarker panel holds the potential to improve clinical outcomes by enabling personalized risk assessment and targeted interventions.

PURPOSE: Cesarean section may result in adverse psychosocial and behavioral outcomes because women put considerable emphasis on the process of birth. Virtual reality treatment has been shown by many studies to reduce anxiety and improve patient satisfaction. Therefore, we designed a randomized controlled trial to investigate whether the application of virtual reality technology during cesarean section can reduce maternal anxiety and improve satisfaction. METHODS: We recruited 128 women undergoing elective cesarean delivery with proposed spinal anesthesia and randomly assigned them to either virtual reality or routine care. The virtual reality intervention was a virtual reality program tailored specifically for women undergoing cesarean section. Primary outcome was the change in anxiety score (change = preoperative-intraoperative score). Secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction score, requirement of intraoperative sedative and analgesic drugs, and respiratory rate. RESULTS: The change in anxiety score in the virtual reality group was significantly higher than that in the routine care group (30 [20, 47.5] vs 10 [- 10, 23.8], respectively; P < 0.001, with Hodges-Lehmann median difference estimate of 20 (95% confidence interval CI, 15-30)). There were no significant differences between the two groups in patient satisfaction scores, the requirement of intraoperative sedative and analgesic drugs, and respiratory rate and side effects. CONCLUSION: Virtual reality treatment could reduce the anxiety of women undergoing elective cesarean section, which is beneficial to the mother and baby. OBJECTIVE: To observe the efficacy and safety of sodium valproate (VPA) compared to levetiracetam (LEV) in the treatment of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). METHODS: In this blind, prospective study, eighty-four sTBI patients who had craniotomy from August 2021 to August 2023 were randomly split into two groups through random number table method: LEV and VPA, each with 42 patients. Both received comprehensive treatment post-craniotomy. LEV group: LEV injection on surgery day, transitioning to LEV tablets from day two. VPA group: VPA injection on surgery day, switching to VPA extended-release tablets from day two. The study compared hospital stay, neurological function, clinical outcomes, seizures, and drug reactions between groups. RESULTS: The length of hospital stay showed no significant difference between the LEV and VPA groups. Both groups demonstrated improved neurological function post-treatment (NIHSS and BI scores), with no significant between-group differences. Clinical outcomes at 3 months post-treatment were similar in both groups. Seizure occurrence within 3 months after treatment showed no significant difference between the LEV (19.05%) and VPA (23.81%) groups. However, the VPA group experienced a significantly higher rate of drug-related adverse reactions (40.48%) compared to the LEV group (21.43%). CONCLUSION: Both VPA and LEV are effective in treating sTBI, showing no significant difference in improving neurological function, daily life abilities, treatment outcomes, and seizure occurrence. However, VPA treatment exhibited a significantly higher incidence of drug-related adverse reactions compared to LEV, indicating that LEV might be a safer option for sTBI treatment.

BACKGROUND: Soft scales (Hemiptera: Coccidae), including important agricultural and forestry pests, are difficult to identify directly by morphological characters. Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) have been widely used in species identification and phylogenetic research. However, only three complete mitogenomes, and very few mitochondrial genes of scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) can be searched in GenBank. Mitogenome comparisons between scale insects or between scale insects and other hemipteran species have not yet been reported. RESULTS: In this study, detailed annotation of three new mitogenomes and comparative analysis of scale insects were completed, as well as comparative analysis of the gene composition, gene arrangement, codon usage and evolutionary forces between scale insects and 488 other hemipteran species for the first time. We found that high A + T content, gene rearrangement and truncated tRNAs are common phenomena in soft scales. The average A + T content and codon usage bias of scale insects are higher and stronger than those of other hemipteran insects, respectively. The atp8 gene of Hemiptera and nine other protein-coding genes of scale insects are under positive selection with higher evolutionary rates. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed the particularity of the scale insect mitogenomes, which will provide a good reference for future research on insect phylogenetic relationships, insect pest control, biogeography and identification.

The relationships between symbionts and insects are complex, and symbionts usually have diverse ecological and evolutionary effects on their hosts. The phloem sap-sucking aphids are good models to study the interactions between insects and symbiotic microorganisms. Although aphids usually exhibit remarkable life cycle complexity, most previous studies on symbiotic diversity sampled only apterous viviparous adult females or very few morphs. In this study, high-throughput 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing was used to assess the symbiotic bacterial communities of eleven morphs or developmental stages of the social aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola. We found there were significant differences in bacterial composition in response to different morphs and developmental stages, and for the first time, we revealed male aphids hosted very different symbiotic composition featured with low abundance of dominant symbionts but high diversity of total symbionts. The relative abundance of Pectobacterium showed relatively stable across different types of samples, while that of Wolbachia fluctuated greatly, indicating the former may have a consistent function in this species and the latter may provide specific function for certain morphs or developmental stages. Our study presents new evidence of complexity of symbiotic associations and indicates strong linkage between symbiotic bacterial community and host age and morph.

Context: The Da-yuan-yin (DYY) decoction is a classical prescription of traditional Chinese medicine that has antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Network Pharmacology (NP) is an emerging discipline based on system-biology theory and biosystem network analysis that researchers can use to predict drug-action targets and mechanisms. Objective: The study intended to use NP evaluate the protective effects of the fifth eluting fraction of the supernatant of the DYY decoction (DYY-5) for mice induced with acute lung injury (ALI) using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and to explore DYY-5's mechanisms. Design: The research team performed an animal study. Setting: The study took place at the College of Pharmaceutical Science at Soochow University in Suzhou, China. Animals: The animals were 42 male Balb/c mice, about 20 to 25 g in weight. Intervention: The research team: instilled 2 mg/kg of LPS intratracheally (i.t.) to induce ALI. The team divided the mice into seven groups of six mice: (1) a control group; (2) a negative control group-the DYY-5 group with mice treated only with a high dosage, 60 mg/kg, of DYY-5 to investigate the effects of DYY-5 on normal mice; (3) the positive control group, the LPS group, with induced ALI but no treatments; (4) the LPS+60 mg/kg-DYY-5 group with induced ALI treated with a high dosage of DYY-5; (5) the LPS+30 mg/kg-DYY-5 group with induced ALI treated with a medium dosage of DYY-5; (6) the LPS+15 mg/kg-DYY-5 group with induced ALI treated with a low dosage of DYY-5; and (7) a reference drug control group, the LPS+DXM group, with induced ALI treated with 5 mg/kg of dexamethasone (DXM). Outcome Measures: The research team: (1) determined the chemical components of DYY; (2) identified the anticomplementary activities of DYY-5; (3) took lung specimens, serum, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) from the mice for histopathological examination, Western blot, and biochemical analysis; (4) measured total protein concentrations and lung W/D ratios; (5) measured the expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) messenger RNA (mRNA) using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR); (6) measured the levels of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory factors, the activity of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the levels of complements, including complements 3 (C3), C3c, C5a, C5aR1, and C5b-9, using kits; (7) analyzed the levels of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and IkB kinase (IKK) using Western blot; and (8) used network pharmacology (NP) to predict DYY-5's mechanisms and potential targets. Results: The study's results were consistent with the NP analysis, which reflected the multitarget and multipathway characteristics of DYY-5 in alleviating ALI. The LPS+30 mg/kg-DYY-5 group had significantly lower lung wet-to-dry (W/D) ratios and total protein concentrations in BALF than the LPS group did, with P < .01 and P < .0001, respectively as did the LPS+60 mg/kg-DYY-5 group (both P < .0001). The 60 mg/kg of DYY-5 compared to the LPS group: (1) regulated the levels tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1ß), with all P < .0001, anti-inflammatory factors-IL-4 (P < .05), IL-10 (P < .001), and IL-13 (P < .001); (2) increased the activity of SOD (P < .0001) and decreased the activity of MPO (P < .0001) and the expressions of iNOS and COX-2 mRNA (both P < .01); (3) blocked the activation of NF-κB and IKK; and (4) alleviated the pathological changes in the lung tissue, by reducing the depositions of C3c and decreasing the levels of C3, C5a and C5aR1 (all P < .0001), C5b-9 (P < .001) and C3c (P < .01) in serum. Conclusions: The protective effects of DYY-5 on ALI were related to antioxidation, anti-complementary activities, and regulation of inflammatory factors through the IKK/NF-κB signal pathway. DYY-5 may be useful as a potential therapeutic agent for treating ALI in clinics.

The veterinary antibiotics contamination in agroecosystems is a substantial problem globally. However, little is known about their toxicity to crops, especially in wheat. This study evaluated the phytotoxic effects of the two most representative antibiotics, namely oxytetracycline (OTC) and enrofloxacin (ENR), on seed germination, seedling growth, root elongation and antioxidant status in wheat, and investigated the response of abscisic acid (ABA) to antibiotic stress and its underlying mechanism. The results showed that OTC and ENR under the experimental concentrations (5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg·L-1) had no influence on seed germination of wheat. The reduced root length, fresh weight and surface area were observed when the concentrations of OTC and ENR were higher than 10 mg·L-1 and 5 mg·L-1, respectively. High concentrations (>40 mg·L-1) of antibiotics dramatically decreased the root length, fresh weight, root numbers and surface area as well as the number of stele cells and stele area. The activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in shoots and roots were increased with the increasing OTC and ENR concentrations. High concentrations (>40 mg·L-1) of antibiotics improved ABA content and enhanced the transcription levels of genes related to ABA biosynthesis (TaNCED1 and TaNCED2) and metabolism (TaABA8'OH1-A and TaABA8'OH2-A) in shoots and roots of wheat seedlings. Wheat seedlings had relatively strong sensitivity to low concentration (5 mg·L-1) of ENR. These results suggest that OTC and ENR modulate root development and seedling growth by regulating ABA level and antioxidant defense system in wheat.

CONTEXT: Da-Yuan-Yin is a Chinese traditional prescription. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the therapeutic effects of the Da-Yuan-Yin decoction polyphenol fraction (DYY-4) on acute lung injury (ALI) in mice induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The mice (n = 10) were orally administrated with DYY-4 (15, 30, and 60 mg/kg) or DXM (5 mg/kg), half an hour after LPS (2 mg/kg) instilled intratracheally. The protein content and the levels of inflammatory factors, the levels of complements, the mRNA expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the level of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), the expression of the IkB kinase (IKK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), the lung wet-to-dry weight (W/D) ratio and lung tissue were evaluated, 24 h after LPS challenge. Network pharmacology predicted potential targets. RESULTS: DYY-4 (30, 60 mg/kg, p < 0.01, p < 0.01) decreased the lung W/D ratio, total protein concentration, the levels of C3, C3c and C5a, the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1ß, while increased the levels of IL-4 and IL-10. DYY-4 (60 mg/kg) decreased the levels of C5aR1, C5b-9 and COX-2 mRNA (p < 0.05), the levels of MPO and iNOS mRNA, the activation of the IKK/NF-κB pathway (p < 0.01), and increased the levels of IL-13 and SOD (p < 0.01). DYY-4 (60 mg/kg) relieved the lung tissue pathological changes and reduced the C3c deposition. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Network pharmacology combined with animal experiments revealed the targets of DYY-4 alleviating ALI.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the results of neonatal screening for congenital hypothyroidism (CH) and hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) in Zhejiang province from 1999 to 2022. METHODS: A total of 11 922 318 newborns were screened from September 1999 and December 2022 in Zhejiang province. The blood thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were measured by a fluorescence method and blood phenylalanine (Phe) levels were measured by fluorescence method or tandem mass spectrometry. TSH≥9 µIU/mL was considered positive for CH, while Phe>120 µmol/L and/or Phe/Tyr ratio>2.0 were considered positive for HPA. The positive newborns in screening were recalled, and the gene variations were detected by high-throughput sequencing and MassARRAY tests. RESULTS: The overall neonatal screening rate during 1999-2022 was 89.41% (11 922 318/13 333 929) and the screening rate was increased from 6.46% in 1999 to 100.0% in 2022. A total of 8924 cases of CH were diagnosed among screened newborns with an incidence rate of 1/1336. A total of 563 cases of HPA were diagnosed, including 508 cases of classic phenylketonuria (cPKU) and 55 cases of tetrahydrobiopterin deficiency (BH4D), with an incidence rate of 1/21 176. Ninety-seven out of 8924 cases of CH underwent genetic analysis. Gene mutations were detected in 9 CH related genes, the highest frequency mutations were found in DUOX2 gene (69.0%) with c.3329G>A (p.R1110Q) (18.2%) and c.1588A>T (p.K530X) (17.3%) as the hotspot mutations. There were 81 PAH gene variants detected in a total of 250 cases of cPKU, and c728G>A (p.R243Q) (24.4%), c.721C>T (p.R241C) (15.0%) were the hotspot mutations. Meanwhile 7 novel variants in PAH gene were detected: c.107C>A (p.S36*), c.137G>T (p.G46V), c.148A>G(p.K50E), c.285C>T (p.I95I), c.843-10delTTCC, exon4-7del and c.1066-2A>G. There were 12 PTS gene variants detected in 36 cases of BH4D, and c.259C>T (p.P87S) (31.9%) was the hotspot mutation. CONCLUSIONS: The incident of CH has increased from 1999 to 2022 in Zhejiang province, and it is higher than that of national and global levels; while the incidence of HPA is similar to the national average. DUOX2 gene variation is the most common in CH patients; c.728G>A (p.R243Q) is the hotspot mutation in cPKU patients, while c.259C>T (p.P87S) is the hotspot mutation in BH4D patients.

BACKGROUND: To study the incidence and risk factors of shivering in pregnant women during cesarean section. METHODS: We performed a prospective nested case-control study involving parturients scheduled for cesarean sections between July 2018 and May 2021. The overall incidence of intraoperative shivering and its potential risk factors were investigated. The potential risk factors evaluated were pain, anxiety, emergency surgery, transfer from the delivery room, epidural labor analgesia, membrane rupture, labor, and the timing of the surgery. Shivering and body temperature at different time points during the cesarean section were also recorded. The selected seven time points were: entering the operating room, post-anesthesia, post-disinfection, post-delivery, post-oxytocin, post additional hysterotonics, and before leaving the operating room. RESULTS: We analyzed 212 cesarean section parturients. The overall incidence of shivering was 89 (42.0%). Multivariate logistic regression showed that anxiety, emergency delivery, and transfer from the delivery room to the operating room increased the overall shivering incidence (odds ratio = 1.77, 2.90, and 3.83, respectively). The peak shivering incidence occurred after skin disinfection (63, 29.7%), and the lowest body temperature occurred after oxytocin treatment (36.24 ± 0.30 °C). Stratified analysis of surgery origin showed that emergency delivery was a risk factor for shivering (odds ratio = 2.99) in women transferred from the obstetric ward to the operating room. CONCLUSION: Shivering occurred frequently during cesarean sections, with the peak incidence occurring after skin disinfection. Anxiety, emergency delivery, and transfer from the delivery room to the operating room increased the risk of shivering development during cesarean sections. Sooty moulds are fungi of economic importance and with unique lifestyle mainly growing on insect honeydew. However, the lack of genomic data hinders investigation of genetic mechanisms underlying their ecological adaptation. With long-read sequencing technology, we generated the genome of Scorias spongiosa, an extraordinary sooty mould fungus associated with honeydew of colony aphids and producing large fruiting bodies. A 24.21 Mb high-quality genome assembly with a N50 length of 3.37 Mb was obtained. The genome contained 7758 protein coding genes, 97.13% of which were homologous to known genes, and approximately 0.29 Mb repeat sequences. Comparative genomics showed S. spongiosa lost relatively more gene families and contained fewer species-specific genes and gene families, with many CAZyme families and sugar transporters reduced or absent. This study not only promotes understanding of the ecological adaptation of sooty moulds, but also provides valuable genomic data resource for future comparative genomic and genetic studies.

Glucose monitoring technologies allow users to monitor glycemic fluctuations (e.g., blood glucose levels). This is particularly important for individuals who have diabetes mellitus (DM). Traditional self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) devices require the user to prick their finger and extract a blood drop to measure the blood glucose based on chemical reactions with the blood. Unlike traditional glucometer devices, noninvasive continuous glucose monitoring (NICGM) devices aim to solve these issues by consistently monitoring users' blood glucose levels (BGLs) without invasively acquiring a sample. In this work, we investigated the feasibility of a novel approach to NICGM using multiple off-the-shelf wearable sensors and learning-based models (i.e., machine learning) to predict blood glucose. Two datasets were used for this study: (1) the OhioT1DM dataset, provided by the Ohio University; and (2) the UofM dataset, created by our research team. The UofM dataset consists of fourteen features provided by six sensors for studying possible relationships between glucose and noninvasive biometric measurements. Both datasets are passed through a machine learning (ML) pipeline that tests linear and nonlinear models to predict BGLs from the set of noninvasive features. The results of this pilot study show that the combination of fourteen noninvasive biometric measurements with ML algorithms could lead to accurate BGL predictions within the clinical range; however, a larger dataset is required to make conclusions about the feasibility of this approach.

Tigliane esters show many biological activities, including anti-HIV-1 activity. Our aim in this study was to establish structure-anti-HIV activity relationships for four series of tigliane-type diterpenoids. We synthesized and evaluated 29 new phorbol ester derivatives for anti-HIV activity and for cytotoxicity against human tumor cell lines. Among them, three derivatives, two phorbol-13-monoesters (5d and 5e) and a phorbol-12,13-diester (6a), showed significant anti-HIV activity. We found that better anti-HIV activity was often associated with a shorter acyl ester at C-13. Particularly, compounds with a phenyl ring in the ester side chain exhibited excellent anti-HIV activity and had good safety indexes. Due to its significant anti-HIV potency with a high selectivity index, phorbol-12,13-dicinnamoate (6a) was chosen as the potential candidate for further preclinical trials.

Fourteen glaucocalyxin A biotinylated derivatives, one glaucocalyxin C biotinylated derivative, and two oridonin biotinylated derivatives were designed and synthesized. Their structures were confirmed from 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS data. The derivatives were evaluated for cytotoxic activities against lung (A549), cervical cancer cell line HeLa derivative (KB), multidrug-resistant KB subline (KB-VIN), triple-negative breast (MDA-MB-231), and estrogen receptor-positive breast (MCF-7) cancer cell lines.[Formula: see text].

Nickel-catalyzed intermolecular Heck reaction of cycloalkenes proceeds well with aryl triflates, mesylates and tosylates in excellent enantiomeric ratios. The asymmetric reductive Heck reaction also works with a 2-cyclopentenone ketal, which is equivalent to conjugate arylation of the enone itself.

Background: The association of subclinical thyroid dysfunction (SCTD) with chronic kidney disease (CKD) among community population remains inconclusive. Our aim was to evaluate the association between SCTD and the risk of CKD by conducting a meta-analysis.Methods: Multiple databases were searched to identify studies on the association between SCTD and risk of CKD, up to October 2018. Relevant information for analysis was extracted. A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled risk estimate.Results: Eight articles were included in this meta-analysis, with three cohort and five cross-sectional studies. The pooled odds ratio (OR) of subclinical hypothyroidism for CKD was 1.37 (95% CI: 1.13-1.67, P = .000, n = 8) in a multivariable-adjusted model. A significant association was observed in subgroup younger than 70 years (OR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.09-1.79, P = .000, n = 6), but not in subgroup older than 70 years (OR = 1.28, 95% CI: 0.89-1.83, P = .186, n = 2). For subclinical hyperthyroidism, the summary OR was 1.16 (95%CI: 0.97-1.39, P = .115, n = 5) and subgroup analyses by age and study design did not alter the results significantly.Conclusions: Our findings demonstrated that subclinical hypothyroidism was significantly associated with a higher risk of CKD independent of some conventional risk factors among community population and age might have modifying effects on the association.

A photoinduced flexible Li-CO2 battery with well-designed, hierarchical porous, and free-standing In2 S3 @CNT/SS (ICS) as a bifunctional photoelectrode to accelerate both the CO2 reduction and evolution reactions (CDRR and CDER) is presented. The photoinduced Li-CO2 battery achieved a record-high discharge voltage of 3.14 V, surpassing the thermodynamic limit of 2.80 V, and an ultra-low charge voltage of 3.20 V, achieving a round trip efficiency of 98.1 %, which is the highest value ever reported (<80 %) so far. These excellent properties can be ascribed to the hierarchical porous and free-standing structure of ICS, as well as the key role of photogenerated electrons and holes during discharging and charging processes. A mechanism is proposed for pre-activating CO2 by reducing In3+ to In+ under light illumination. The mechanism of the bifunctional light-assisted process provides insight into photoinduced Li-CO2 batteries and contributes to resolving the major setbacks of the system.

Acute lung injury (ALI) results from various factors including uncontrolled pulmonary inflammation, oxidative damage and the over-activated complement with high mortality rates. Jaceosidin was a flavonoid compound with significant anti-complement activity. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Jaceosidin on ALI induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mice were orally administrated with Jaceosidin (15, 30 and 60 mg/kg) after LPS challenge. 24 h after LPS challenge, Jaceosidin could significantly decrease the lung wet-to-dry weight (W/D) ratio and the protein concentration in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Jaceosidin could down-regulate the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), together with up-regulation the levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in BALF. Jaceosidin could significantly decrease the levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), COX-2 mRNA and NF-κB p65 mRNA together with increasing the activity of catalase (CAT). Additionally, Jaceosidin attenuated lung histopathological changes, inhibited the expressions of COX-2 and NF-κB p65 and reduced complement deposition with decreasing the levels of complement 3 (C3) and complement 3c (C3c) in serum. These data suggest that Jaceocidin may dampen the inflammatory response and decrease the levels of complement together with the antioxidant activity following LPS-induced ALI.
