RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Obstructive shock is extremely rare in clinical practice and is caused by acute blood flow obstruction in the central vessels of either the systemic or pulmonary circulation. Utilizing inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with some potential complications, such as inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT). Shock as a direct result of IVCT is rare. We present a case of obstructive shock secondary to extensive IVCT caused by inadequate anticoagulant therapy after the placement of an IVCF. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old male patient with a traffic accident injury presented orthopaedic trauma and lower limb deep vein thrombosis (DVT). He experienced sudden and severe abdominal pain with hypotension, tachycardia, tachypnea, oliguria and peripheral oedema 5 days after IVCF placement and 3 days after cessation of anticoagulant therapy. Considering that empirical anti-shock treatment lasted for a while and the curative effect was poor, we finally recognized the affected vessels and focused on the reason for obstructive shock through imaging findings-inferior vena cava thrombosis and occlusion. The shock state immediately resolved after thrombus aspiration. The same type of shock occurred again 6 days later during transfer from the ICU to general wards and the same treatment was administered. The patient recovered smoothly in the later stage, and the postoperative follow-up at 1, 3, and 12 months showed good results. CONCLUSION: This case alerts clinicians that it is crucial to ensure adequate anticoagulation therapy after IVCF placement, and when a patient presents with symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, and lower limb and scrotal oedema postoperatively, immediate consideration should be given to the possibility of obstructive shock, and prompt intervention should be based on the underlying cause.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), a composite inflammatory marker encompassing neutrophils, monocytes, and lymphocytes, has been recognized as a reliable marker of systemic inflammation. This article undertakes an analysis of clinical data from ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) patients, aiming to comprehensively assess the relationship between SIRI, STEMI, and the degree of coronary stenosis. METHODS: The study involved 1809 patients diagnosed with STEMI between the years 2020 and 2023. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the risk factors for STEMI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to determine the predictive power of SIRI and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Spearman correlation analysis was performed to assess the correlation between SIRI, NLR, and the Gensini score (GS). RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the SIRI was the independent risk factor for STEMI (adjusted odds ratio (OR) in the highest quartile = 24.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 15.32-40.66, P < 0.001). In addition, there is a high correlation between SIRI and GS (ß:28.54, 95% CI: 24.63-32.46, P < 0.001). The ROC curve analysis was performed to evaluate the predictive ability of SIRI and NLR for STEMI patients. The area under the curve (AUC) for SIRI was 0.789. The AUC for NLR was 0.754. Regarding the prediction of STEMI in different gender groups, the AUC for SIRI in the male group was 0.771. The AUC for SIRI in the female group was 0.807. Spearman correlation analysis showed that SIRI exhibited a stronger correlation with GS, while NLR was lower (SIRI: r = 0.350, P < 0.001) (NLR: r = 0.313, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study reveals a strong correlation between the SIRI and STEMI as well as the degree of coronary artery stenosis. In comparison to NLR, SIRI shows potential in predicting acute myocardial infarction and the severity of coronary artery stenosis. Additionally, SIRI exhibits a stronger predictive capability for female STEMI patients compared to males.

RESUMO

AIM: It has long been recognized that resistance exercise can substantially increase skeletal muscle mass and strength, but whether it can protect against glucocorticoid-induced muscle atrophy and its potential mechanism is yet to be determined. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of resistance exercise in dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy and elucidate the possible function of exercise-induced protein Sestrin2 in this process. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice carried out the incremental mouse ladder exercise for 11 weeks. Two weeks before the end of the intervention, mice were daily intraperitoneally injected with dexamethasone. Body composition, muscle mass, and exercise performance were examined to evaluate muscle atrophy. In vitro, C2C12 cells were used for RT-qPCR, Western Blot, and immunofluorescence experiments to elucidate the potential mechanism. RESULTS: Our results showed that long-term resistance exercise is an effective intervention for dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy. We also found that Sestrin2 plays a vital role in dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy. In both animal (P = .0006) and cell models (P = .0266), dexamethasone intervention significantly reduced the protein expression of Sestrin2, which was increased (P = .0112) by resistance exercise. Inversely, overexpression of Sestrin2 improved (P < .0001) dexamethasone-induced myotube cell atrophy by reducing the activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway via inhibiting Forkhead box O3 (FoxO3a) and myostatin (MSTN)/small mother against decapentaplegic (Smad) signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our results indicated that Sestrin2 may serve as an effective molecule that mimics the protective effect of resistance exercise on dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patients with Heart failure (HF) commonly have a water-electrolyte imbalance due to various reasons and mechanisms, and hyponatremia is one of the most common types. However, currently, there are very few local studies on hyponatremia risk assessment in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), and there is a lack of specific screening tools. The aim of this study is to identify a prediction model of hyponatremia in patients with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) and verify the prediction effect of the model. METHODS: A total of 532 patients with ADHF were enrolled from March 2014 to December 2019. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the independently associated risk factors of hyponatremia in patients with ADHF. The prediction model of hyponatremia in patients with ADHF was constructed by R software, and validation of the model was performed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration curves. RESULTS: A total of 65 patients (12.2%) had hyponatremia in patients with ADHF. Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that NYHA cardiac function classification (NYHA III vs II, OR = 12.31, NYHA IV vs II, OR = 11.55), systolic blood pressure (OR = 0.978), serum urea nitrogen (OR = 1.046) and creatinine (OR = 1.006) were five independent prognostic factors for hyponatremia in patients with ADHF. The AUC was 0.757; The calibration curve was near the ideal curve, which showed that the model can accurately predict the occurrence of hyponatremia in patients with ADHF. CONCLUSIONS: The prediction model constructed in our study has good discrimination and accuracy and can be used to predict the occurrence of hyponatremia in patients with ADHF.

RESUMO

Using network analysis, this study investigated how family communication patterns (Conversation and Conformity) were related to and predictive of adolescent overall depression severity and specific symptoms. A community sample of adolescents (10-17 years, n = 1327) completed the Children's Depression Inventory and the Revised Family Communication Pattern Instrument. Depressive symptoms were also re-assessed 6 months later. Results showed that Conversation orientation protected against, whereas Conformity orientation increased the risk of adolescent depression. Family communication particularly influenced the child's feeling of being unloved, and feeling unloved was the only symptom prospectively predicted by two communication orientations at baseline. These findings revealed the path linking family factors to adolescent depression and may have implications for future family-based interventions.

RESUMO

COVID-19 has caused the overnight migration of learning and teaching to online platforms and has significantly impacted students' learning opportunities and experiences worldwide. The results of emergency online learning have heavily relied on students' abilities to exercise agency in maintaining active motivation and engagement with online learning. Despite the wide application of motivation theories to diverse contexts, how to adapt motivation theories to develop online learning effectively and sustainably in complex and situational online learning environments is still under-investigated. Using a large sample of 14,935 postgraduate students from 31 universities in China, this study examined the effects of student motivation and engagement on students' academic achievement in the COVID-induced online learning anchored by the theoretical perspective of self-determination theory. This study made contribution to the self-determination theory by extending it to the complex emergency situation and supported its main argument that online emergency learning environments satisfying students' psychological needs of autonomy and competence promote optimal motivation, positive engagement and academic achievement. This study also contributed to reveal the 'sophisticated' nature of relatedness satisfaction in the case wherein its specific effects depend on the cultural configuration of the contexts and on the specific types of engagement. Given the fact that COVID-19 continues to be a public challenge throughout the world, implications for improving the quality of online teaching in the future were also discussed.

RESUMO

Fruit shape is an important quality and yield trait in melon (Cucumis melo). Although some quantitative trait loci for fruit shape have been reported in in this species, the genes responsible and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identified and characterized a gene controlling fruit shape from two melon inbred lines, B8 with long-horn fruit and HP22 with flat-round fruit. Genetic analysis suggested that the shape was controlled by a single and incompletely dominant locus, which we designate as CmFSI8/CmOFP13. This gene was finely mapped to a 53.7-kb interval on chromosome 8 based on bulked-segregant analysis sequencing and map-based cloning strategies. CmFSI8/CmOFP13 encodes an OVATE family protein (OFP) and is orthologous to AtOFP1 and SlOFP20. The transcription level of CmFSI8/CmOFP13 in the ovary of HP22 was significantly higher than that in B8, and sequence analysis showed that a 12.5-kb genomic variation with a retrotransposon insertion identified in the promoter was responsible for elevating the expression, and this ultimately caused the differences in fruit shape. Ectopic overexpression of CmFSI8/CmOFP13 in Arabidopsis led to multiple phenotypic changes, including kidney-shaped leaves and shortened siliques. Taken together, our results demonstrate the involvement of an OFP in regulating fruit shape in melon, and our improved understanding of the molecular mechanisms will enable us to better manipulate fruit shape in breeding.

RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the Pseudostellaria heterophylla polysaccharides (PF40) physicochemical and antidiabetic characteristics. The ultraviolet-visible (UV) spectra, Fourier transform infrared radiation (FT-IR) spectra, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra, zeta potential, surface characteristics, and conformational and thermal stability properties of PF40 were characterized. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), combined with Congo red test, revealed that PF40 powder has mainly existed in amorphous form with triple-helix conformation. The single-molecular structure of PF40 exhibited a multi-branched structure extending from the center to the periphery by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) scanning. The monosaccharide residue of PF40 was an α-pyranoid ring and exhibits good stability below 168 °C. Experimental studies on antidiabetic characteristics found that PF40 could significantly improve STZ-induced intestinal mucosal damage and reduce the apoptosis of villus epithelial cells. PF40 combined with metformin could significantly improve the symptoms of insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats, the molecular mechanism might be through inhibiting the expression of RORγ protein and increasing Foxp3 protein in the jejunum of T2DM rats, and then restoring the STZ-induced imbalance of T helper 17(Th17)/ regulatory T cells (Treg) cells, thereby maintaining intestinal immune homeostasis. Results identified in this study provided important information regarding the structure and antidiabetic characteristics of Pseudostellaria heterophylla polysaccharides, which can contribute to the development of Pseudostellaria heterophylla polysaccharides for industrial purposes in the future.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The existing concept suggests early palliative and hospice therapy for a better quality of care (QOC) and less medical expense in terminal cancer patients, but the time points of "early" initiation were defined by pre-set study protocol rather than the real-world data. The study aimed to determine the optimal timing of initiating palliative care for patients with terminal cancer. METHODS: This retrospective population-based study was conducted using a nationwide database. We extracted patients with cancer who were in their last year of lives in the period from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2013 and categorized them into two groups ("hospice-shared care" (HSC) group and "usual care" (UC) group) after a matching process. Subsequently, we used a generalized linear mixed-effects model to compare the QOC and medical expenses between groups. RESULTS: After the selection and matching process, we enrolled 1714 patients (67.7 ± 13.2 years, 62.7% male) categorized into the HSC and UC groups (n = 857 in each group). The HSC groups showed generally better QOC in the four indices (with emergency room visit, hospitalization, intensive care unit admission, and receiving chemotherapy) than the UC group in those who initiated HSC 8-60 days before death. The HSC group also had significantly lower medical expenses than the UC group in those who initiated HSC 15-90 days before death. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with terminal cancer, HSC initiation before the last 8 days and 15 days of lives can effectively improve QOC and save medical expenses, respectively.

RESUMO

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common yet complicated clinical entity with high morbidity and mortality. An essential strategy to improve AKI patients' prognoses is finding optimal biomarkers to identify AKI in a timely manner. Procalcitonin (PCT), a well-recognized biomarker for diagnosing infection and guiding antibiotics therapy, has been proposed to predict AKI development and recovery in many clinical settings. The current review provides comprehensive and updated information from relevant studies to evaluate PCT's AKI-predictive ability and the influence of infection on this predictive ability. PCT has demonstrated optimal predictive ability for AKI in various populations irrespective of infection. However, the predictive ability seems to be blunted by infection since infection and inflammation have a more potent influence than AKI on PCT elevation. We furthermore explain the complicated association between elevated PCT levels and AKI in infection and inflammation situations and recommend directions for further investigations to clarify the essential issue. In conclusion, although conflicting data exist, serum PCT level is a potential biomarker for predicting AKI in many clinical settings regardless of infection. Nevertheless, further studies are warranted to clarify the association between PCT, infection, and AKI and to confirm the utilization of PCT for AKI prediction.

RESUMO

Autoimmune ovarian disease (AOD) is considered to be a major cause of premature ovarian failure (POF). The immunomodulatory properties of human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) have been studied in many disease models. We previously reported that hAECs restored ovarian function in chemotherapy-induced POF mice, but the immunomodulatory mechanism of hAECs is still unclear. To investigate the effect of hAECs on recipient mice, especially on regulatory Treg cells, hAECs and hAEC-conditioned medium (hAEC-CM) were intravenously injected into AOD mice immunized with zona pellucida protein 3 peptides (pZP3). Ovarian function was evaluated through estrous cycle, hormone secretion, follicle development, and cell apoptosis analysis. Immune cells including CD3, CD4, CD8 and Treg cells in the spleens were tested by flow cytometry. To elucidate the effect of hAEC-CM on macrophage function, inflammation model in vitro was established in RAW264.7 cells induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). hAECs and hAEC-CM regulated estrous cycles, promoted follicle development, ameliorated cell apoptosis and fibrosis in ovaries of AOD mice. In addition, hAECs significantly reversed the decrease of pZP3-induced Treg cells in the spleens. In vitro, hAEC-CM significantly inhibited the inflammatory reaction induced by LPS in RAW264.7 cells via up-regulating the expression of M2 macrophage genes. Further study demonstrated that hAEC-secreted transforming growth factor-beta and macrophage inhibitory factor played important roles in the macrophage polarization and migration under inflammatory stimulation. Taken together, hAECs restored ovarian function by up-regulating Treg cells in the spleens and reduced the inflammatory reaction via modulating the activated macrophage function in a paracrine manner in the ovaries of AOD mice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Phosphate binders have an impact on fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23); however, the effect of phosphate binders on serum hepcidin has not been explored. We conducted a 24-week multicenter randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of lanthanum carbonate or calcium carbonate monotherapy on serum phosphate, FGF23, and hepcidin levels in chronic hemodialysis patients. METHODS: Forty-six patients were recruited, and daily dietary phosphorus was controlled between 600-800 mg. Serum calcium, phosphate, albumin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), FGF23, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), hepcidin, high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), 25(OH)D, 1,25(OH)2D, fetuin-A, and osteopontin were checked as scheduled. RESULTS: Twenty-five patients completed the study. Mean serum FGF23 level was significantly decreased after a 24-week treatment with lanthanum (8677.5 ± 7490.0 vs. 4692.8 ± 5348.3 pg/mL, p = 0.013, n = 13), but not with calcium (n = 12). The reduction of serum hepcidin in lanthanum group was positively correlated with the decrement of serum phosphate (r = 0.631, p = 0.021) and serum hsCRP (r = 0.670, p = 0.012) levels, respectively. Serum ALP, iPTH, vitamin D, fetuin-A, and osteopontin revealed no significant inter- or intragroup differences. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, a decrease in serum FGF23 levels and a trend of decline in hepcidin levels were observed only in lanthanum group.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Both uremia and metabolic syndrome (MetS) affect heart rate variability (HRV) which is a risk factor of poor prognoses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of MetS on HRV among chronic hemodialysis patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in a teaching hospital in Northern Taiwan from June to August, 2010. Adult patients on chronic hemodialysis without active medical conditions were enrolled. HRV were measured for 4 times on the index hemodialysis day (HRV-0, -1, -2, and -3 at before, initial, middle, and late phases of hemodialysis, respectively), and the baseline demographic data and clinical parameters during the hemodialysis session were documented. Then we evaluated the impacts of MetS and its five components on HRV. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-five patients (100 women, mean age 65.1 ± 12.9 years) were enrolled and included those with MetS (n = 91, 52 %) and without MetS (n = 84, 48 %). The patients with MetS(+) had significantly lower very low frequency, total power, and variance in HRV-0, total power and variance in HRV-2, and variance in HRV-3. (all p ≦ 0.05) When using the individual components of MetS to evaluate the impacts on HRV indices, the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) criterion significantly affected most indices of HRV while other four components including "waist circumference", "triglycerides", "blood pressure", and "high-density lipoprotein" criteria exhibited little impacts on HRV. FPG criterion carried the most powerful influence on cardiac ANS, which was even higher than that of MetS. The HRV of patients with FPG(+) increased initially during the hemodialysis, but turned to decrease dramatically at the late phase of hemodialysis. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of FPG(+) outstood the influence of uremic autonomic dysfunction, and FPG criterion was the most important one among all the components of MetS to influence HRV. These results underscored the importance of interpretation and management for abnormal glucose metabolism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can provide valuable data for root canal systems of human teeth in vivo. This study used CBCT to evaluate the number of roots and canals of 300 mandibular first premolars in 150 northern Taiwanese patients. METHODS: The root canal systems of 300 mandibular first premolars in 150 northern Taiwanese patients with bilateral premolars were analyzed by CBCT. RESULTS: Of the 300 mandibular first premolars, 197 (65.7%) had one root with one canal (1R1C), 49 (16.3%) had one root with two canals (1R2C), 51 (17.0%) had two roots with one canal in each root (2R2C), and three (1.0%) had three roots with one canal in each root (3R3C). Statistical analyses showed that women had a significantly higher incidence of 1R1C mandibular first premolars (71.4%) than men (58.8%, p = 0.031), and men had a significantly higher incidence of 2R2C mandibular first premolars (27.2%) than women (8.5%, p < 0.001). One hundred and twenty-two (81.3%) of the 150 patients had a symmetrical root and root canal system between the right and left mandibular first premolars. Men had a significantly higher symmetrical rate of 2R2C mandibular first premolars (26.5%) than women (8.2%, p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: Approximately 82% of mandibular first premolars in northern Taiwanese patients have one root with either one or two canals. There are significant differences in the number of roots and canals and symmetry of the root canal system of bilateral mandibular first premolars between male and female northern Taiwanese patients.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to facilitate gene discovery for functional genome studies and to identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for molecular-assisted selection in Phellinus linteus. The transcriptome of Phellinus linteus was sequenced using а high-throughput RNA sequencing system - the Illumina Hiseq 2000. A total of 16,383,818 clean sequencing reads, 35,532 contigs and 25,811 unigenes were postulated. Based on similarity searches with known proteins, 19,350 genes (74.97% of the unigenes) were annotated. In the present research, 19,266, 10,978 and 7831 unigenes were mapped in Nr, Swiss-Prot and clusters of orthologous groups (COG) classifications, respectively. Of all unigenes, 6845 were categorized into three functional groups, namely biological process, cellular components and molecular function and 11,088 were annotated to 108 pathways by searching the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway database. A total of 1129 SSRs were identified in these unigenes. In addition, 23 candidate genes, potentially involved in sterol biosynthesis, were identified and were worthy of further investigation.

RESUMO

Human amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are novel and promising therapeutic agents for patients suffering from degenerative diseases. Studies have demonstrated that the therapeutic effects of hAECs mainly depend on their paracrine components. Currently, appropriate pretreatment is a widely confirmed strategy for enhancing the repair potential of stem cells; however, the effect of proinflammatory factor pretreatment on hAECs and their secretome is still unclear. In this study, we used the well-characterized proinflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) to stimulate hAECs and analyzed the effect of TNF-α and IFN-γ on hAECs, including gene expression profile, paracrine proteins, and microRNAs (miRNAs) in exosomes. Results showed that TNF-α and IFN-γ pretreatment improved the viability of hAECs but inhibited the proliferation of hAECs. TNF-α and IFN-γ pretreatment altered the gene expression profile of hAECs, and upregulated differentially expressed genes were predominantly enriched in biological adhesion, antioxidant activity, and response to IFN-beta. In addition, TNF-α and IFN-γ pretreatment enhanced the paracrine secretion of cytokines by hAECs. The upregulated differentially expressed proteins were mainly enriched in tissue remodeling proteins and cytokine-cytokine receptor. Notably, the expression of miRNAs in exosomes from hAECs was also changed by TNF-α and IFN-γ pretreatment. The target genes of upregulated exosomal miRNAs substantially contributed to the response to stimulus, metabolic pathways, and PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. Our findings improve our understanding of the biological characteristics of hAECs after proinflammatory factor pretreatment and provide novel insights to strengthen and optimize the therapeutic potential of hAECs and their secretome in regenerative medicine.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare the effects of different exercise preconditioning in the context of skeletal muscle atrophy and to investigate the potential involvement of Sestrin2 (SESN2), a stress-inducible protein that can be regulated by exercise, in exercise preconditioning on preventing disuse muscle atrophy. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were randomly assigned to sedentary groups (SD), aerobic exercise groups (AE), resistance exercise groups (RE), and combined exercise groups (CE) with or without 7 days of immobilization. The duration of the exercise intervention was 10 weeks. The effects of different exercise preconditioning to prevent muscle atrophy were analyzed by evaluating skeletal muscle function and mass. Additionally, to investigate the potential underlying mechanism of exercise-induced protection of skeletal muscle, wild-type and SESN2--/-- mice were randomly divided into sedentary group and resistance exercise preconditioning group. C2C12 cells were treated with SESN2 adenoviruses and MK2206 (an AKT inhibitor) for 48 h to elucidate the underlined mechanism. RESULTS: RE was more effective in preserving skeletal muscle function, muscle mass and maintaining skeletal muscle protein homeostasis than AE and CE under immobilized condition. Importantly, exercise performance, muscle mass to body weight ratio, and the cross-sectional area of muscle fibers were significantly lower in SESN2-/- mice than wild-type mice after resistance exercise preconditioning. Mechanistically, the absence of SESN2 led to activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and induction of apoptosis. In vitro experiments showed that MK2206 treatment mitigated the regulatory effects of overexpression-SESN2 on protein hydrolysis and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: RE was more effective than AE or CE in preventing disuse muscle atrophy. SESN2 mediated the protective effects of resistance exercise preconditioning on skeletal muscle atrophy.

RESUMO

Whey protein isolate (WPI) and chitosan were used to fabricate WPI/chitosan composite particles at temperatures of 75 °C (WPI/chitosan-75) and 95 °C (WPI/chitosan-95). The morphologic structure, surface properties, and the resulting tribological characteristics of the particles were investigated. The composite particles showed larger particle size than pure WPI particles (WPI-75) (~ 509 nm), with WPI/chitosan-95 the largest (932 nm). WPI/chitosan-75 showed complete core-shell structure from microstructure results. The dispersion of WPI/chitosan-75 exhibited higher surface hydrophobicity but lower viscosity compared to WPI/chitosan-95. Tribological analysis revealed that WPI/chitosan composite particles showed dramatically lower friction coefficient (µ) than pure WPI particles at sliding speed <10 mm/s and WPI/chitosan-75 demonstrated superior lubrication effects. With the presence of artificial saliva, the µ of WPI-75 was greatly lowered at sliding speed <16 mm/s, while the values of WPI/chitosan-75 only showed a slight decrease at sliding speed <1 mm/s. Chitosan might have played the similar role as artificial saliva in lubricating on the hydrophobic surface. Moreover, the incorporation of 0.5 % WPI/chitosan-75 in the low-fat (5 %) oil-in-water emulsion led to even lower µ than full-fat (20 %) emulsion at sliding speed <10 mm/s. Hence, WPI/chitosan-75 exhibited promising potential as a fat replacement and biolubricant.

RESUMO

The commercialization of high-performance nickel-rich cathodes always awaits a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and large-scale preparation method. Despite a grinding process normally adopted in the synthesis of the nickel-rich cathodes, lattice distortion, rough surface, and sharp edge transformation inevitably occurr in the resultant samples. In this work, an additional annealing process is proposed that aims at regulating lattice distortion as well as achieving round and smoother morphologies without any structural or elemental modifications. Such a structural enhancement is favored for improved lithium diffusion and electrochemical stability during cycling. Consequently, the annealed cathodes demonstrate a considerable enhancement in capacity retention, escalating from 68.7% to 91.9% after 100 cycles at 1 C. Additionally, the specific capacity is significantly increased from 64 to 142 mAh g-1 at 5 C when compared to the unannealed cathodes. This work offers a straightforward and effective approach for reinforcing the electrochemical properties of nickel-rich cathodes.

RESUMO

Li-rich layered oxides (LRLOs), with the advantages of high specific capacity and low cost, are considered as candidates for the next-generation cathode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Unfortunately, sluggish kinetics and interfacial degradation lead to capacity loss and voltage decay of the material during cycling. To address these issues, we propose a Ni/Mg dual concentration-gradient modification strategy for LRLOs. From the center to the surface of the modified materials, the contents of Ni and Mg are gradually increased while the content of Mn is decreased. The high Ni content on the surface increases the proportion of cationic redox, elevating the operating voltage and accelerating reaction kinetics. Moreover, the doped Mg on the surface of the material acting as a stabilizing pillar suppresses the migration of transition metals, stabilizing the layered structure. Therefore, the material with the Ni/Mg dual concentration-gradients delivers a superior electrochemical performance, exhibiting a suppressed voltage decay of 2.8 mV per cycle during 200 cycles (1 C, 2-4.8 V) and an excellent rate capability of 94.84 mAh/g at 7C. This study demonstrates a synergic design to construct high-performance LRLO cathode materials for LIBs.
