RESUMO

Turtle eggs containing embryos are exceedingly rare in the fossil record. Here, we provide the first description and taxonomic identification, to our knowledge, of a fossilized embryonic turtle preserved in an egg, a fossil recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Xiaguan Formation of Henan Province, China. The specimen is attributed to the Nanhsiungchelyidae (Pan-Trionychia), an extinct group of large terrestrial turtles (possibly the species Yuchelys nanyangensis). The egg is rigid, spherical, and is one of the largest and thickest shelled Mesozoic turtle eggs known. Importantly, this specimen allowed identification of other nanhsiungchelyid egg clutches and comparison to those of Adocidae, as Nanhsiungchelyidae and Adocidae form the basal extinct clade Adocusia of the Pan-Trionychia (includes living soft-shelled turtles). Despite the differences in habitat adaptations, nanhsiungchelyids (terrestrial) and adocids (aquatic) shared several reproductive traits, including relatively thick eggshells, medium size clutches and relatively large eggs, which may be primitive for trionychoids (including Adocusia and Carrettochelyidae). The unusually thick calcareous eggshell of nanhsiungchelyids compared to those of all other turtles (including adocids) may be related to a nesting style adaptation to an extremely harsh environment.

RESUMO

The Sevatian of the late Norian is one of the key intervals in biotic turnover and in changes of paleoclimate and paleoenvironments. Conodont faunas recovered from two sections of upper Norian strata of the Dashuitang and Nanshuba formations near Baoshan City in western Yunnan province provide new insights into the diversity and biostratigraphy of the Sevatian conodonts within China as well as globally. A lower Mockina (M.) bidentata Zone and an upper Parvigondolella (P.) andrusovi Zone are identified in this area according to the first occurrences of M. bidentata and of P. andrusovi. Rich conodont fauna of M. zapfei is detailed and presents various intraspecific forms. A total of 19 forms of P1 elements are presented, which, when combined with the reported conodonts in the M. bidentata Zone, suggest that there was a peak in conodont diversity within the M. bidentata Zone. A biotic crisis in the uppermost M. bidentata Zone is recognized from the contrast between the diverse conodont fauna in the M. bidentata Zone and the rare conodonts in the P. andrusovi Zone. The conodont turnover during the middle Sevatian highlights the fact that the prolonged phases of the end-Triassic mass extinction probably began in the transition interval from M. bidentata Zone to P. andrusovi Zone.

RESUMO

Here we describe a newly discovered basal ichthyosauromorph from the Lower Triassic of South China, Baisesaurus robustus gen. et sp. nov. The only known specimen of this new species was collected from the Lower Triassic (Olenekian) Luolou Formation in the Zhebao region of Baise City, on the northwest margin of the Nanpanjiang Basin, and comprises a partial skeleton including the ribs, the gastralia, a limb element, 12 centra, and seven neural arches. Comparisons to a wide variety of Early Triassic marine reptiles show Baisesaurus robustus to be a basal ichthyosauromorph based on the following features: neural arches lack transverse processes; dorsal ribs are slender, and not pachyostotic even proximally; and median gastral elements have long, sharp anterior processes. The limb element is long and robust, and is most likely to be a radius. Baisesaurus robustus is large (estimated length more than 3 m) relative to early ichthyosauromorphs previously discovered in China, and shares noteworthy morphological similarities with Utatsusaurus hataii, particularly with regard to body size and the morphology of the probable radius. Baisesaurus robustus also represents the first record of an Early Triassic ichthyosauromorph from Guangxi Autonomous Region, extending the known geographic distribution of ichthyosauromorphs in South China.

RESUMO

Goudemand et al. replot a subset of our well-constrained data using a new Early Triassic biostratigraphic scheme based on a lower-resolution ammonoid zonation scheme and hypothetical ammonoid-conodont correlation to produce a less distinct seawater temperature history. We dispute their unsubstantiated correlation and, consequently, their allegations.

RESUMO

Global warming is widely regarded to have played a contributing role in numerous past biotic crises. Here, we show that the end-Permian mass extinction coincided with a rapid temperature rise to exceptionally high values in the Early Triassic that were inimical to life in equatorial latitudes and suppressed ecosystem recovery. This was manifested in the loss of calcareous algae, the near-absence of fish in equatorial Tethys, and the dominance of small taxa of invertebrates during the thermal maxima. High temperatures drove most Early Triassic plants and animals out of equatorial terrestrial ecosystems and probably were a major cause of the end-Smithian crisis.

RESUMO

The 260-million-year-old Emeishan volcanic province of southwest China overlies and is interbedded with Middle Permian carbonates that contain a record of the Guadalupian mass extinction. Sections in the region thus provide an opportunity to directly monitor the relative timing of extinction and volcanism within the same locations. These show that the onset of volcanism was marked by both large phreatomagmatic eruptions and extinctions amongst fusulinacean foraminifers and calcareous algae. The temporal coincidence of these two phenomena supports the idea of a cause-and-effect relationship. The crisis predates the onset of a major negative carbon isotope excursion that points to subsequent severe disturbance of the ocean-atmosphere carbon cycle.
