To investigate the association between autonomic dysfunction (AutD) and motor as well as non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Fifty-three PD patients were divided into two groups based on the number of domains affected by AutD: a multi-domain AutD group (AutD-M) and a single-domain AutD group (AutD-S), as evaluated using the Scale for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease-Autonomic (SCOPA-AUT), which assesses autonomic symptoms, one of the NMS. A comprehensive comparison was conducted between the two groups, including clinical measures such as clinical scales, quantitative evaluations of motor function and exercise capacity. Spearman correlation analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between AutD severity and PD symptoms. Additionally, we performed multiple linear regression model analysis to determine whether associations between SCOPA-AUT scores and clinical assessments remained significant after adjusting for Hoehn and Yahr stage, sex, and age. PD patients in the AutD-M group exhibited significantly more severe NMS and motor symptoms compared to those in the AutD-S group. In correlation analysis, SCOPA-AUT scores showed significant correlations with multiple clinical symptoms, such as most of the NMS, 10-MWT and CPET parameters. Furthermore, regression analysis also revealed that more pronounced fatigue, anxiety, depressive symptoms, worse walking speed and impaired exercise capacity were associated with higher SCOPA-AUT scores. The presence of AutD is correlated with emotional disturbances, decreased exercise endurance, and impaired gait function in patients with PD. Early management of AutD may prove beneficial in alleviating some NMS and motor symptoms in PD.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a computed tomography (CT) radiomics-based interpretable machine learning (ML) model to predict the pathological grade of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) in a non-invasive manner. METHODS: Patients with pNETs who underwent contrast-enhanced abdominal CT between 2010 and 2022 were included in this retrospective study. Radiomics features were extracted, and five radiomics-based ML models, namely logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), XGBoost, and GaussianNB, were developed. The performance of these models was evaluated using a time-independent testing set, and metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated. The accuracy of the radiomics model was compared to that of needle biopsy. The Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) tool and the correlation between radiomics and biological features were employed to explore the interpretability of the model. RESULTS: A total of 122 patients (mean age: 50 ± 14 years; 53 male) were included in the training set, whereas 100 patients (mean age: 48 ± 13 years; 50 male) were included in the testing set. The AUCs for LR, SVM, RF, XGBoost, and GaussianNB were 0.758, 0.742, 0.779, 0.744, and 0.745, respectively, with corresponding accuracies of 73.0%, 70.0%, 77.0%, 71.9%, and 72.9%. The SHAP tool identified two features of the venous phase as the most significant, which showed significant differences among the Ki-67 index or mitotic count subgroups (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: An interpretable radiomics-based RF model can effectively differentiate between G1 and G2/3 of pNETs, demonstrating favorable interpretability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The radiomics-based interpretable model developed in this study has significant clinical relevance as it offers a non-invasive method for assessing the pathological grade of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and holds promise as an important complementary tool to traditional tissue biopsy. KEY POINTS: • A radiomics-based interpretable model was developed to predict the pathological grade of pNETs and compared with preoperative needle biopsy in terms of accuracy. • The model, based on CT radiomics, demonstrated favorable interpretability. • The radiomics model holds potential as a valuable complementary technique to preoperative needle biopsy; however, it should not be considered a replacement for biopsy.

The CO electrooxidation is long considered invincible in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), where even a trace level of CO in H2 seriously poisons the anode catalysts and leads to huge performance decay. Here, we describe a class of atomically dispersed IrRu-N-C anode catalysts capable of oxidizing CO, H2, or a combination of the two. With a small amount of metal (24 µgmetal⋅cm-2) used in the anode, the H2 fuel cell performs its peak power density at 1.43 W⋅cm-2 When operating with pure CO, this catalyst exhibits its maximum current density at 800 mA⋅cm-2, while the Pt/C-based cell ceases to work. We attribute this exceptional catalytic behavior to the interplay between Ir and Ru single-atom centers, where the two sites act in synergy to favorably decompose H2O and to further facilitate CO activation. These findings open up an avenue to conquer the formidable poisoning issue of PEMFCs.

PURPOSE: Total knee arthroplasty is the main method for the treatment of advanced haemophilic knee arthritis. Due to the particularity of hemophilia, the blood management plan is the focus of the perioperative period for haemophilia patients. This study aimed to investigate the clinical effect and safety of intra-articular injection of tranexamic acid in patients with haemophilia. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. According to whether tranexamic acid is used or not, patients are divided into tranexamic acid group (n=30) and non-tranexamic acid group (n=29). Total blood loss, intraoperative blood loss, complete blood count, total amount of coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) usage, coagulation biomarkers, inflammatory biomarkers, knee range of motion, knee joint function, pain status, complication rate, and patient satisfaction were assessed and compared at a mean follow-up of 16 months. RESULTS: Injecting tranexamic acid into the knee joint cavity can effectively reduce the hidden blood loss and total blood loss (P<0.001), and reduce the patient's early postoperative inflammation biomarkers, pain status, and limb swelling. Therefore, the patient can obtain a better range of motion following total knee arthroplasty. In the long run, in terms of joint function and surgical satisfaction, there are no statistically significant differences. In addition, there are no statistically significant differences between the two groups of patients in terms of the total amount of FVIII usage, length of stay, and hospitalization expenses. CONCLUSION: In patients with haemophilia, intra-articular injection of tranexamic acid during total knee arthroplasty can effectively reduce postoperative blood loss, early postoperative inflammation levels, pain and limb swelling, and enable patients to receive higher-quality rehabilitation exercises to get better joint function. Previous studies on TKA in haemophilic patients have already demonstrated the efficacy of intra-articular injections of TXA in reducing postoperative blood loss. Our study confirms this efficacy.

In contrast to the kinetically favored outward isomerization-hydrocarbonylation of alkenes, the disfavored inward isomerization-hydrocarbonylation of alkenes remains an important challenge. Herein, we have developed a novel and effective palladium-catalyzed inward isomerization-hydroaminocarbonylation of unactivated alkenes and aniline hydrochlorides for the formation of synthetically valuable α-aryl carboxylic amides in high yields and high site-selectivities. The high efficiency of the reaction is attributed to a relay catalysis strategy, in which the Markovnikov-favored [PdH]-PtBu3 catalyst is responsible for inward isomerization, while the [PdH]-Ruphos catalyst is responsible for hydroaminocarbonylation of the resulting conjugated aryl alkenes. The reaction exhibits highly functional group tolerance and provides a new method for formal carbonylation of remote C(sp3)-H bond.

To address the challenges posed by computational resource consumption and data volume in the development of large-aperture metalenses, a design method for concentric-ring metalens based on two-dimensional unit splicing is proposed in this paper. In the method, the unit structure library is constructed through global traversal under the machining process constraints. The phase matching is performed for two polarization states with specific weights and the design of binary-height, concentric-ring structures with arbitrary polarization sensitivity is realized, whose focusing efficiency (the encircled power within 3×FWHM of the focal spot divided by the near-field outgoing power) is up to 90%. Based on this method, a polarization-insensitive metalens with a design wavelength of 10µm, diameter of 2 cm, and numerical aperture of 0.447 is obtained. The method combines the advantages of lower computation requirements for a building block array of a metalens and lower structure data for a concentric-ring metalens. Consequently, it becomes possible to reduce calculation and processing costs by several orders of magnitude during the development process of metalenses with diameters ranging from 103 to 105 wavelengths. The resulting focusing efficiency can approach the upper limit achievable through global structural optimization and significantly surpass that of binary-height Fresnel lenses.

Metalenses can achieve diffraction-limited focusing via localized phase modification of the incoming light beam. However, the current metalenses face to the restrictions on simultaneously achieving large diameter, large numerical aperture, broad working bandwidth and the structure manufacturability. Herein, we present a kind of metalenses composed of concentric nanorings that can address these restrictions using topology optimization approach. Compared to existing inverse design approaches, the computational cost of our optimization method is greatly reduced for large-size metalenses. With its design flexibility, the achieved metalens can work in the whole visible range with millimeter size and a numerical aperture of 0.8 without involving high-aspect ratio structures and large refractive index materials. Electron-beam resist PMMA with a low refractive index is directly used as the material of the metalens, enabling a much more simplified manufacturing process. Experimental results show that the imaging performance of the fabricated metalens has a resolution better than 600 nm corresponding to the measured FWHM of 745 nm.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and survival outcomes of computed tomography-guided microwave ablation (MWA) for medically inoperable Stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in patients aged ≥70 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a prospective, single-arm, single-center clinical trial. The MWA clinical trial enrolled patients aged ≥70 years with medically inoperable Stage I NSCLC from January 2021 to October 2021. All patients received biopsy and MWA synchronously with the coaxial technique. The primary endpoints were 1-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). The secondary endpoint was adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 103 patients were enrolled. Ninety-seven patients were eligible and analyzed. The median age was 75 years (range, 70-91 years). The median diameter of tumors was 16 mm (range, 6-33 mm). Adenocarcinoma (87.6%) was the most common histologic finding. With a median follow-up of 16.0 months, the 1-year OS and PFS rates were 99.0% and 93.7%, respectively. There were no procedure-related deaths in any patient within 30 days after MWA. Most of the adverse events were minor. CONCLUSION: MWA is an effective and safe treatment for patients aged ≥70 years with medically inoperable Stage I NSCLC.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited kidney disease. Cyst development in ADPKD involves abnormal epithelial cell proliferation, which is affected by the primary cilia-mediated signal transduction in the epithelial cells. Thus, primary cilium has been considered as a therapeutic target for ADPKD. Since ADPKD exhibits many pathological features similar to solid tumors, we investigated whether targeting primary cilia using anti-tumor agents could alleviate the development of ADPKD. Twenty-four natural compounds with anti-tumor activity were screened in MDCK cyst model, and 1-Indanone displayed notable inhibition on renal cyst growth without cytotoxicity. This compound also inhibited cyst development in embryonic kidney cyst model. In neonatal kidney-specific Pkd1 knockout mice, 1-Indanone remarkably slowed down kidney enlargement and cyst expansion. Furthermore, we demonstrated that 1-Indanone inhibited the abnormal elongation of cystic epithelial cilia by promoting tubulin polymerization and significantly down-regulating expression of anterograde transport motor protein KIF3A and IFT88. Moreover, we found that 1-Indanone significantly down-regulated ciliary coordinated Wnt/ß-catenin, Hedgehog signaling pathways. These results demonstrate that 1-Indanone inhibits cystic cell proliferation by reducing abnormally prolonged cilia length in cystic epithelial cells, suggesting that 1-Indanone may hold therapeutic potential to retard cyst development in ADPKD.

The Yellow River (YR) is the fifth-longest and the most sediment-laden river in the world. Frequent historical YR flooding events, however, have resulted in tremendous loss of life and property, whereas in recent decades YR runoff and sediment load have fallen sharply. To put these recent changes in a longer-term context, we reconstructed natural runoff for the middle reach of the YR back to 1492 CE using a network of 31 moisture-sensitive tree-ring width chronologies. Prior to anthropogenic interference that started in the 1960s, the lowest natural runoff over the past 500 y occurred during 1926 to 1932 CE, a drought period that can serve as a benchmark for future planning of YR water allocation. Since the late 1980s, the low observed YR runoff has exceeded the natural range of runoff variability, a consequence of the combination of decreasing precipitation and increasing water consumption by direct and indirect human activities, particularly agricultural irrigation. This reduced runoff has resulted in an estimated 58% reduction of the sediment load in the upper reach of the YR and 29% reduction in the middle reach.

The antidiabetic pharmaceutical metformin (MET) is largely unmetabolized by the human body. Its residues are readily detectable in various aquatic environments and may have adverse impacts on the growth and survival of aquatic species. To date, its toxicological effects have scarcely been explored in non-fish species. Here, we exposed the tadpoles of black-spotted pond frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus) to different concentrations (0, 1, 10 and 100 µg/L) of MET for 30 days and measured the body size, intestinal microbiota and metabolites to evaluate potential effects of MET exposure in amphibian larvae. MET exposure did not affect the growth and intestinal microbial diversity of tadpoles. However, intestinal microbial composition changed significantly, with some pathogenic bacteria (e.g., bacterial genera Salmonella, Comamonas, Stenotrophomonas, Trichococcus) increasing and some beneficial bacteria (e.g., Blautia, Prevotella) decreasing in MET-exposed tadpoles. The levels of some intestinal metabolites associated with growth and immune performance also changed significantly following MET exposure. Overall, our results indicated that exposure to MET, even at environmentally relevant concentrations, would cause intestinal microbiota dysbiosis and metabolite alteration, thereby influencing the health status of non-target aquatic organisms, such as amphibians.

AIM: Splenic vessel-preserving spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (SVP-SPDP) has a lower risk of splenic infarction than the splenicvessel-sacrificing SPDP, but it is more technically demanding. Learning curve of robotic-assisted SVP-SPDP (RSVP-SPDP) remains unreported. This study sought to analyze the perioperative outcomes and learning curve of RSVP-SPDP by one single surgeon. METHODS: Seventy-four patients who were intended to receive RSVP-SPDP at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University between May 2015 and January 2023 were included. The learning curve were retrospectively analyzed by using cumulative sum (CUSUM) analyses. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients underwent RSVP-SPDP (spleen preservation rate: 83.8%). According to CUSUM curve, the operation time (median, 318 vs. 220 min; P < 0.001) and intraoperative blood loss (median, 50 vs. 50 mL; P = 0.012) was improved significantly after 16 cases. Blood transfusion rate (12.5% vs. 3.4%; P = 0.202), postoperative major morbidity rate (6.3% vs. 3.4%; P = 0.524), and postoperative length-of-stay (median, 10 vs. 8 days; P = 0.120) improved after 16 cases but did not reach statistical difference. None of the patients had splenic infarction or abscess postoperatively. CONCLUSION: RSVP-SPDP was a safe and feasible approach for selected patients after learning curve. The improvement of operation time and intraoperative blood loss was achieved after 16 cases.

Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic auto-inflammatory dermatosis characterized by hyperproliferation of keratinocytes. Emerging evidence has validated the dysregulated expression of microRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) in psoriasis patients. Aim: To probe into the role and precise mechanism of miR-125a-3p in HaCaT cells and imiquimod (IMQ)-stimulated psoriasis-like mice. Material and methods: In M5-treated HaCaT cells and IMQ-stimulated psoriasis-like mice, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis were performed for detecting gene expression. Hematoxylin and eosin staining was used to evaluate pathological morphology of IMQ-induced psoriasis skin. The proliferation of keratinocytes was assessed using Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and Ki67 positive staining. The combination between miR-125a-3p and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) was confirmed by luciferase reporter assay. Results: Our study showed reduced miR-125a-3p expression in psoriasis patients, psoriasis-like inflammatory cell models, and IMQ-generated psoriasis-like mouse models. MiR-125a-3p repressed the activity of keratinocytes in vitro by suppressing cell proliferation, inhibiting the production of psoriasis-related genes and inflammatory genes, and inactivating the NF-κB and interleukin (IL)-1ß pathways. Notably, the psoriasis-like inflammation was repressed by intradermal injection of agomiR-125a-3p in psoriatic mouse models in vivo. Mechanically, miR-125a-3p targeted and negatively regulated TLR4. Furthermore, the elevated expression of TLR4 reversed the influences of miR-125a-3p mimics on HaCaT cells. Conclusions: Upregulation of miR-125a-3p protects keratinocytes against hyperproliferation and inflammatory damage by inhibiting TLR4, suggesting that the miR-125a-3p/TLR4 axis might become a novel target for the prevention of psoriasis.

Traditional fermented soybean food has emerged as an important part of people's dietary structure because of the unique flavors and improved health benefit. During fermentation, the nutrients in soybean undergo a series of biochemical reactions catalyzed naturally by microorganism secreted enzymes. Thereafter, many functional and bioactive substances such as bioactive peptides, unsaturated fatty acids, free soy isoflavones, vitamins and minerals are produced, making fermented soy products more advantageous in nutrition and health. This review comprehensively discusses the historical evolution, distribution, traditional fermentation processing, main sources and characteristics of fermented strains, flavor components, nutritional properties, and biological activities of four traditional fermented soybean foods including douchi, sufu, dajiang, and soy sauce. In the end, we introduce four major challenges encountered by traditional fermented soybean foods including high salt content, formation of biogenic amine, the presence of pathogenic microorganisms and mycotoxins, and quality inconsistency. We conclude that the establishment of scientific quality standard and innovated fermentation processing is the potential solutions to combat the issues and improve the safety of traditional fermented soybean products.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to prove the hypothesis that neurolysis based on ethanol injection in combination with iodine-125 (125I) radioactive seed implantation could prolong the nerve regeneration time compared with that based on ethanol injection alone. The grade of nerve injury was assessed for both methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty female rabbits (mean weight, 2.8 kg ± 0.2) were randomly assigned to group A (neurolysis of the left brachial plexus nerve based on ethanol injection in combination with 125I radioactive seed implantation, n = 10) and group B (neurolysis using ethanol injection alone, n = 10). The right brachial plexus nerve was used as a control. Injury and regeneration of the brachial plexus nerve were analyzed using electromyography. Statistical tests were performed using the Mann-Whitney U test and repeated-measures analysis of variance. The results were verified with histopathological examinations. RESULTS: The overall postprocedural amplitude was significantly lower in group A than in group B (P = .01), particularly in the second month after the procedure (P = .036). However, no statistical difference in latency was observed between the 2 groups (P = .103). Histopathological examination of both groups revealed Sunderland third-degree peripheral nerve injury (PNI), which was mainly characterized by axonal disintegration. The degree of nerve regeneration was significantly lower in group A than in group B. CONCLUSIONS: Neurolysis based on ethanol injection in combination with 125I radioactive seed implantation can prolong the nerve regeneration time compared with that based on ethanol injection alone, although both methods resulted in Sunderland third-degree PNI.

This study was conducted to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of breast cancer and lung cancer (BC-LC) and provide a theoretical basis for the diagnosis and treatment of BC-LC in clinical work. A retrospective study was conducted on breast cancer (BC) patients in our center from September 2009 to November 2020. The patients were divided into the BC-LC group and the control group. The control group was matched with both, the age at diagnosis and the time of surgery (±1 year). The clinicopathological factors, overall survival (OS), and hazard ratios (HRs) were evaluated by SPSS. A total of 19,807 BC patients were identified, among whom 124 (0.6%) had lung cancer (LC). Larger BC tumor was the only independent risk factor (OR=2.454, p<0.001) for development of LC in BC patients. We found inferior survival in patients with synchronous versus metachronous BC-LC (p=0.008). We also identified combined with hypertension (HR=3.917, p=0.003) was an independent prognostic factor for inferior OS. Therefore, BC patients with larger tumors need close follow-up. Effective prevention and active treatment of hypertension can improve the OS of BC-LC patients.

Krüppel-like transcription factor 7 (KLF7) promotes preadipocyte proliferation; however, its target gene in this process has not yet been identified. Using KLF7 ChIP-seq analysis, we previously showed that a KLF7-binding peak is present upstream of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 3 gene ( CDKN3) in chicken preadipocytes. In the present study, we identify CDKN3 as a target gene of KLF7 that mediates the effects of KLF7 on preadipocyte proliferation. Furthermore, 5'-truncating mutation analysis shows that the minimal promoter is located between nt -160 and nt -7 (relative to the translation initiation codon ATG) of CDKN3. KLF7 overexpression increases CDKN3 promoter activity in the DF-1 and immortalized chicken preadipocyte (ICP1) cell lines. Deletion of the putative binding site of KLF7 abolishes the promotive effect of KLF7 overexpression on CDKN3 promoter activity. Moreover, CDKN3 knockdown and overexpression assays reveal that CDKN3 enhances ICP1 cell proliferation. Flow cytometry analysis shows that CDKN3 accelerates the G1/S transition. Furthermore, we find that KLF7 promotes ICP1 cell proliferation via Akt phosphorylation by regulating CDKN3. Taken together, our results suggest that KLF7 promotes preadipocyte proliferation by activating the Akt signaling pathway by cis-regulating CDKN3, thus driving the G1/S transition.

Objective To forecast the future burden and its attributable risk factors of infective endocarditis (IE). Method We analyzed the disease burden of IE and its risk factors from 1990 to 2019 using the Global Burden of Disease 2019 database and projected the disease burden from 2020 to 2030 using a Bayesian age-period-cohort model. Results By 2030, the incidence of IE will increase uncontrollably on a global scale, with developed countries having the largest number of cases and developing countries experiencing the fastest growth. The affected population will be predominantly males, but the gender gap will narrow. The elderly in high-income countries will bear the greatest burden, with a gradual shift to middle-income countries. The incidence of IE in countries with middle/high-middle social-demographic indicators (SDI) will surpass that of high SDI countries. In China, the incidence rate and the number of IE will reach 18.07 per 100,000 and 451,596 in 2030, respectively. IE-associated deaths and heart failure will continue to impose a significant burden on society, the burden on women will increase and surpass that on men, and the elderly in high-SDI countries will bear the heaviest burden. High systolic blood pressure has become the primary risk factor for IE-related death. Conclusions This study provides comprehensive analyses of the disease burden and risk factors of IE worldwide over the next decade. The IE-associated incidence will increase in the future and the death and heart failure burden will not be appropriately controlled. Gender, age, regional, and country heterogeneity should be taken seriously to facilitate in making effective strategies for lowering the IE disease burden.

BACKGROUND: Routine lymphadenectomy in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) is debated. There lacks accurate model to predict lymph node metastasis (LNM) preoperatively in pNETs. Therefore, this study aimed at developing a nomogram in predicting LNM in pNETs preoperatively. METHODS: Patients undergoing surgery from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (design cohort, n = 2742) and First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University (validation cohort, n = 136) were enrolled. Nomogram was developed based on risk factors determined by logistic regression analyses. The performance of nomogram was evaluated by area under receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis. RESULTS: In design cohort, 915 of 2742 patients had LNM. Tumor in the pancreatic head, T stage, and tumor size were significantly associated with LNM (all p < 0.05). Prediction of nomogram was accurate with AUC of 0.776 in design cohort and 0.622 in validation cohort. The nomogram showed good agreement between prediction and observation in the design and validation cohort. Based on nomogram-predicted risk, patients with higher risk of LNM had worse overall survival over patients with lower risk of LNM (log-rank p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The novel nomogram could accurately predict LNM in pNET preoperatively. For patients with high risk of LNM, lymphadenectomy was recommended.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) and the occurrence of mycotoxins is the largest food safety threat to malting and brewing grains. Worldwide surveys of commercial beers have reported that the trichothecene mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) is the most frequent contaminant in beer. Although the DON content of grain generally declines during steeping due to its solubilization, Fusarium spp. can continue to grow and produce DON from steeping through the early kilning stage of malting. DON present on malt is largely extracted into beer. The objective of the current study was to localize the growth of Fusarium spp. within FHB-infected kernels by developing an improved method and to associate fungal growth with the production of DON during malting. FHB-infected barley, wheat, rye, and triticale grains that exhibited large increases in the amount of Fusarium Tri5 DNA and trichothecene mycotoxins following malting were screened for hyphal localization. The growth of fungal hyphae associated with grain and malt was imaged by scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser-scanning microscopy assisted with WGA-Alexa Fluor 488 staining, respectively. In barley, hyphae were present on or within the husk, vascular bundle, and pericarp cavities. Following malting, vast hyphal growth was observed not only in these regions but also in the aleurone layer, endosperm, and embryo. Extensive fungal growth was also observed following malting of wheat, rye, and triticale. However, these grains already had an extensive internal presence of Fusarium hyphae in the unmalted grain, thus representing an enhanced chance of fungal expansion during the malting.[Formula: see text] Copyright © 2021 The Author(s).
