RESUMO

Lamy et al have provided interesting data in their recent article in your esteemed journal. Luteolin augments apoptosis in a number of systemic malignancies. Luteolin reduces tumor growth in breast carcinomas. Luteolin mediates this effect by up-regulating the expression of Bax and down-regulating the expression of Bcl-xL. EGFR-induced MAPK activation is also attenuated. As a result there is increased G2/ M phase arrest. These effects have been seen both in vivo as well as in vitro. It also reduces ERα expression and causes inhibition of IGF-1 mediated PI3K-Akt pathway. Luteolin also activates p38 resulting in nuclear translocation of the apoptosis-inducing factor. Simultaneously it also activates ERK. As a result there is increased intra-tumoral apoptosis which is caspase dependent as well as caspase independent.

RESUMO

Recent data suggest that CD146 may be involved in tumor development and may influence tumor prognosis in a number of systemic tumors besides gall bladder carcinomas. For instance, CD146 augments the development and progression of gastric carcinomas. It performs this function by accentuating epithelial mesenchymal transition (Liu et al., Int J Mol Sci 13:6399-6406, 2012). CD146 thus points towards a poor clinical outcome in gastric malignancies. An increase in gastric tissue vimentin is seen with an increase in CD146 levels. Similarly, around 8.7 % of lung adenocarcinomas express CD146. A decreased 5-year overall survival rate is seen following lung resection of pulmonary adenocarcinomas in male patients who express CD146 (Zeng et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 109:1127-1132; 2012).

RESUMO

The commentary illustrates the significant tumor attenuating effects of magnolol and refers to the article on "Screening active anti-breast cancer compounds from Cortex Magnolia officinalis by 2D LC-MS" (X. Hou, et al., J. Sep. Sci. 2013, 36 (4), 706-712). On the basis of the literature, there is definitively need for further studies to fully understand the magnolol reation pathways and to harness the antineoplastic effects.

RESUMO

I read with great interest the recent article by Zhou et al. in a recent issue of your esteemed journal. The article is highly thought provoking. Interestingly, over the past few years, new data has emerged that reveals the emerging anticarcinogenic role of fluoxetine in systemic tumors besides breast carcinomas.

RESUMO

Acanthosis nigricans is a dermatologic condition commonly seen in diabetics and obese individuals. Histologically, it is characterized by the proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Clinically, the lesions appear as dark-brown thickened plaques. The neck and the axillas are the most commonly affected sites. Treatment involves management of the underlying disorder. Topical tretinoin and calcipotriol have also been used with some limited success. Other treatment options include laser and surgical excision.
