RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is suggested that pregnancy risks may be related to microbial dysbiosis, and it is known that knowledge on this subject is reflected in behaviors. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether microbiota awareness in the first trimester of pregnancy is associated with pregnancy-related risks. METHODS: Within the scope of the study, the microbiota awareness scale was administered to 426 individuals in the first trimester of pregnancy, and information on any diagnosis related to high-risk pregnancy, gestational age, birth weight, and birth height of the newborn was obtained from their file records. RESULTS: The mean total microbiota awareness score of individuals was 61.38 ± 11.00 (26.00-91.00). The microbiota awareness score (56.85 ± 11.65) was found to be lower in individuals diagnosed with high-risk pregnancy (p < 0.05) than in healthy subjects (63.64 ± 9.94). Moreover, in individuals with high-risk pregnancies, a positive correlation was found between the microbiota awareness score and newborn birth weight and height (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The poor microbiota awareness level in pregnant women is associated with high-risk pregnancy and neonatal growth status.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The perinatal morbidity risk is higher in operative deliveries than normal vaginal deliveries. 'Tau protein' is a cytoskeletal component that is predominantly expressed in axons of neurons. The aim of this study was to investigate whether delivery type, particularly the forceps application, had any effect on cord blood tau levels. METHODS: Ninety babies born in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine of Ankara Etlik Maternity and Women's Health Teaching Hospital, Ankara, Turkey were involved in the study. The babies were divided into three groups according to delivery type: Group 1: normal vaginal delivery (NVD); Group 2: caesarean section; Group 3: forceps application. Cord blood samples were drawn from umbilical veins of the babies soon after the birth. RESULTS: The cord blood tau protein levels in the caesarean section group (79 pg/mL [45-223]) were found to be significantly lower than those of NVD (135 pg/mL [44-627]) and forceps (175 pg/mL [17-418]) groups (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: We have shown that forceps applications uncomplicated with perinatal asphyxia did not affect the cord blood tau protein level significantly. Tau levels in caesarean section group were significantly lower than the other two groups. Caesarean section in this manner might be considered especially in conditions of risk of perinatal asphyxia to avoid hypoxia.

RESUMO

Bile ducts of Luschka (also called subvesical or supravesicular ducts) can cause bile leakage during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, especially if surgery is carried out in ignorance of such variations. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical anatomy of these ducts in human fetuses and frequency of the ducts locating near gallbladder fossa. Thirty-two fetal cadaver livers were dissected and the gallbladders were separated from the livers and ducts were investigated under a surgical microscope. All observed ducts were examined microscopically and connective tissue cords were excluded. Bile ducts of Luschka locating near cystic fossa were found in 7 of 32 fetuses (21.9%). Three of the seven ducts ran towards to liver segment 5 (S5); three ducts were found in the gallbladder fossa; and one duct ran towards to liver segment 4 (S4). Also it was found that three of the seven ducts drained into the subsegmental duct of S5, two ducts drained into the right hepatic duct, one duct drained into the right anterior branch bile duct, and one duct drained into the subsegmental duct of S4. Subvesical ducts running along the gallbladder fossa between the gallbladder and the liver parenchyma were found in a relatively high incidence in fetuses than adults. Awareness and knowledge about incidence of such ducts alerts the surgeon during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Therefore morbidity due to bile leaks can be reduced.

RESUMO

Our objective was to compare the collagen and muscle content of the round ligament of uteri in women with pelvic organ prolapse. We evaluated the tissue samples obtained from the round ligaments of 22 patients with uterine prolapse who underwent vaginal hysterectomy (group A, study) and from 26 patients with no pelvic relaxation in whom total abdominal hysterectomy was performed for benign reasons (group B, controls). Morphometric analysis was performed on histologic cross-sections of the round ligament. Sections from each sample were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Masson's trichrome methods. A computer system was used for morphometric measurements. We used independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test to investigate the difference between the two groups. It was found that the smooth muscle fraction of the round ligament in women with uterine prolapse was significantly decreased compared with that of healthy control subjects and concluded that decreased smooth muscle content may be an important pathogenetic factor in uterine prolapse.
