RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) is effective for treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); however, DBS is associated with neurosurgical risks. Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is a newer form of noninvasive (ie, nonsurgical) stimulation that can modulate deeper regions, such as the VC/VS. tFUS parameters have just begun to be studied and have often not been compared in the same participants. We explored the effects of three VC/VS tFUS protocols and an entorhinal cortex (ErC) tFUS session on the VC/VS and cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical circuit (CSTC) in healthy individuals for later application to patients with OCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve individuals participated in a total of 48 sessions of tFUS in this exploratory multisite, within-subject parameter study. We collected resting-state, reward task, and arterial spin-labeled (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging scans before and after ErC tFUS and three VC/VS tFUS sessions with different pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs), pulse widths (PWs), and duty cycles (DCs). RESULTS: VC/VS protocol A (PRF = 10 Hz, PW = 5 ms, 5% DC) was associated with increased putamen activation during a reward task (p = 0.003), and increased VC/VS resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) with the anterior cingulate cortex (p = 0.022) and orbitofrontal cortex (p = 0.004). VC/VS protocol C (PRF = 125 Hz, PW = 4 ms, 50% DC) was associated with decreased VC/VS rsFC with the putamen (p = 0.017), and increased VC/VS rsFC with the globus pallidus (p = 0.008). VC/VS protocol B (PRF = 125 Hz, PW = 0.4 ms, 5% DC) was not associated with changes in task-related CSTC activation or rsFC. None of the protocols affected CSTC ASL perfusion. CONCLUSIONS: This study began to explore the multidimensional parameter space of an emerging form of noninvasive brain stimulation, tFUS. Our preliminary findings in a small sample suggest that VC/VS tFUS should continue to be investigated for future noninvasive treatment of OCD.

PURPOSE: Spinal cord gray-matter imaging is valuable for a number of applications, but remains challenging. The purpose of this work was to compare various MRI protocols at 1.5 T, 3 T, and 7 T for visualizing the gray matter. METHODS: In vivo data of the cervical spinal cord were collected from nine different imaging centers. Data processing consisted of automatically segmenting the spinal cord and its gray matter and co-registering back-to-back scans. We computed the SNR using two methods (SNR_single using a single scan and SNR_diff using the difference between back-to-back scans) and the white/gray matter contrast-to-noise ratio per unit time. Synthetic phantom data were generated to evaluate the metrics performance. Experienced radiologists qualitatively scored the images. We ran the same processing on an open-access multicenter data set of the spinal cord MRI (N = 267 participants). RESULTS: Qualitative assessments indicated comparable image quality for 3T and 7T scans. Spatial resolution was higher at higher field strength, and image quality at 1.5 T was found to be moderate to low. The proposed quantitative metrics were found to be robust to underlying changes to the SNR and contrast; however, the SNR_single method lacked accuracy when there were excessive partial-volume effects. CONCLUSION: We propose quality assessment criteria and metrics for gray-matter visualization and apply them to different protocols. The proposed criteria and metrics, the analyzed protocols, and our open-source code can serve as a benchmark for future optimization of spinal cord gray-matter imaging protocols.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a public health crisis in the U.S. that causes over 50 thousand deaths annually due to overdose. Using next-generation RNA sequencing and proteomics techniques, we identified 394 differentially expressed (DE) coding and long noncoding (lnc) RNAs as well as 213 DE proteins in Brodmann Area 9 of OUD subjects. The RNA and protein changes converged on pro-angiogenic gene networks and cytokine signaling pathways. Four genes (LGALS3, SLC2A1, PCLD1, and VAMP1) were dysregulated in both RNA and protein. Dissecting these DE genes and networks, we found cell type-specific effects with enrichment in astrocyte, endothelial, and microglia correlated genes. Weighted-genome correlation network analysis (WGCNA) revealed cell-type correlated networks including an astrocytic/endothelial/microglia network involved in angiogenic cytokine signaling as well as a neuronal network involved in synaptic vesicle formation. In addition, using ex vivo magnetic resonance imaging, we identified increased vascularization in postmortem brains from a subset of subjects with OUD. This is the first study integrating dysregulation of angiogenic gene networks in OUD with qualitative imaging evidence of hypervascularization in postmortem brain. Understanding the neurovascular effects of OUD is critical in this time of widespread opioid use.

The habenula (Hb) inhibits dopaminergic reward signaling in response to negative outcomes and has been linked to numerous functional domains relevant to mental health, including reward prediction, motivation, and aversion processing. Despite its important neuroscientific and clinical implications, however, the human Hb remains poorly understood due to its small size and the associated technical hurdles to in vivo functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigation. Using high-resolution 3 T fMRI data from 68 healthy young adults acquired through the Human Connectome Project, we developed a rigorous approach for mapping the whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity of the human Hb. Our study combined an optimized strategy for defining subject-level connectivity seeds to maximize Hb blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal sensitivity with high-quality surface-based alignment for robust functional localization and cortical sensitivity. We identified significant positive Hb connectivity with: (i) conserved brainstem targets, including the dopaminergic ventral tegmental area, serotonergic raphe nuclei, and periaqueductal gray; (ii) subcortical structures related to reward and motor function, including the nucleus accumbens, dorsal striatum, pallidum, thalamus, and cerebellum; and (iii) cortical areas associated with the Salience Network and early sensory processing, including the dorsal anterior cingulate, anterior insula, and primary visual and auditory cortices. Hb connectivity was strongly biased towards task-positive brain regions, with weak or negative connectivity observed throughout the task-negative Default Mode Network. Our study provides a detailed characterization of Hb resting-state functional connectivity in healthy young adults, demonstrating both the feasibility and clinical potential of studying the human Hb using high-resolution 3 T fMRI.

In vivo human optic nerve diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is technically challenging with two outstanding issues not yet well addressed: (i) non-linear optic nerve movement, independent of head motion, and (ii) effect from partial-volumed cerebrospinal fluid or interstitial fluid such as in edema. In this work, we developed a non-linear optic nerve registration algorithm for improved volume alignment in axial high resolution optic nerve dMRI. During eyes-closed dMRI data acquisition, optic nerve dMRI measurements by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with and without free water elimination (FWE), and by diffusion basis spectrum imaging (DBSI), as well as optic nerve motion, were characterized in healthy adults at various locations along the posterior-to-anterior dimension. Optic nerve DTI results showed consistent trends in microstructural parametric measurements along the posterior-to-anterior direction of the entire intraorbital optic nerve, while the anterior portion of the intraorbital optic nerve exhibited the largest spatial displacement. Multi-compartmental dMRI modeling, such as DTI with FWE or DBSI, was less subject to spatially dependent biases in diffusivity and anisotropy measurements in the optic nerve which corresponded to similar spatial distributions of the estimated fraction of isotropic diffusion components. DBSI results derived from our clinically feasible (∼10 min) optic nerve dMRI protocol in this study are consistent with those from small animal studies, which provides the basis for evaluating the utility of multi-compartmental dMRI modeling in characterizing coexisting pathophysiology in human optic neuropathies.

In vivo morphological study of the human habenula, a pair of small epithalamic nuclei adjacent to the dorsomedial thalamus, has recently gained significant interest for its role in reward and aversion processing. However, segmenting the habenula from in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is challenging due to the habenula's small size and low anatomical contrast. Although manual and semi-automated habenula segmentation methods have been reported, the test-retest reproducibility of the segmented habenula volume and the consistency of the boundaries of habenula segmentation have not been investigated. In this study, we evaluated the intra- and inter-site reproducibility of in vivo human habenula segmentation from 3T MRI (0.7-0.8 mm isotropic resolution) using our previously proposed semi-automated myelin contrast-based method and its fully-automated version, as well as a previously published manual geometry-based method. The habenula segmentation using our semi-automated method showed consistent boundary definition (high Dice coefficient, low mean distance, and moderate Hausdorff distance) and reproducible volume measurement (low coefficient of variation). Furthermore, the habenula boundary in our semi-automated segmentation from 3T MRI agreed well with that in the manual segmentation from 7T MRI (0.5 mm isotropic resolution) of the same subjects. Overall, our proposed semi-automated habenula segmentation showed reliable and reproducible habenula localization, while its fully-automated version offers an efficient way for large sample analysis.

Sestrin2 (sesn2) is an endogenous antioxidant protein that has recently gained attention for its potential to treat various inflammatory diseases. However, the relationship of sesn2 with cardiomyopathy is still unclear. In H9c2 cells, sesn2 knockdown reduced the level of 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation, downregulated antioxidant genes including catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD2), and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production upon lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment. LPS-mediated cell death and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2 and MMP9 were significantly increased by sesn2 knockdown. However, these increases were prevented by treatment with 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR), an AMPK activator. Consistent with the in vitro results, AMPK phosphorylation was decreased in heart tissue from sesn2 knockdown mice compared to heart tissue from control C57BL/6 mice, which was associated with decreased expression of antioxidant genes and increased LPS-mediated cell death signaling. Furthermore, the decrease in AMPK phosphorylation caused by sesn2 knockdown increased LPS-mediated expression of cardiac fibrotic factors, including collagen type I and type III, in addition to MMP2 and MMP9, in heart tissue from C57BL/6 mice. These results suggest that sesn2 is a novel potential therapeutic target for cardiomyopathy under inflammatory conditions.

PURPOSE: Increased signal-to-noise ratio and blood oxygenation level-dependent sensitivity at 7 Tesla (T) have the potential to enable high-resolution imaging of the human cervical spinal cord and brainstem. We propose a new two-panel radiofrequency coil design for these regions to fully exploit the advantages of ultra-high field. METHODS: A two-panel array, containing four transmit/receive and 18 receive-only elements fully encircling the head and neck, was constructed following simulations demonstrating the B1+ and specific absorption rate (SAR) benefits of two-panel over one-panel arrays. This array was compared with a previously reported posterior-only array and tested for safety using a phantom. Its anatomical, functional, and diffusion MRI performance was demonstrated in vivo. RESULTS: The two-panel array produced more uniform B1+ across the brainstem and cervical spinal cord without compromising SAR, and achieved 70% greater receive sensitivity than the posterior-only array. The two-panel design enabled acceleration of R = 2 × 2 in two dimensions or R = 3 in a single dimension. High quality in vivo anatomical, functional, and diffusion images of the human cervical spinal cord and brainstem were acquired. CONCLUSION: We have designed and constructed a wrap-around coil array with excellent performance for cervical spinal cord and brainstem MRI at 7T, which enables simultaneous human cervical spinal cord and brainstem functional MRI. The habenula consists of a pair of small epithalamic nuclei located adjacent to the dorsomedial thalamus. Despite increasing interest in imaging the habenula due to its critical role in mediating subcortical reward circuitry, in vivo neuroimaging research targeting the human habenula has been limited by its small size and low anatomical contrast. In this work, we have developed an objective semi-automated habenula segmentation scheme consisting of histogram-based thresholding, region growing, geometric constraints, and partial volume estimation steps. This segmentation scheme was designed around in vivo 3 T myelin-sensitive images, generated by taking the ratio of high-resolution T1w over T2w images. Due to the high myelin content of the habenula, the contrast-to-noise ratio with the thalamus in the in vivo 3T myelin-sensitive images was significantly higher than the T1w or T2w images alone. In addition, in vivo 7 T myelin-sensitive images (T1w over T2*w ratio images) and ex vivo proton density-weighted images, along with histological evidence from the literature, strongly corroborated the in vivo 3 T habenula myelin contrast used in the proposed segmentation scheme. The proposed segmentation scheme represents a step toward a scalable approach for objective segmentation of the habenula suitable for both morphological evaluation and habenula seed region selection in functional and diffusion MRI applications.

Accurate analyses of total organic carbon (TOC) encompassing particulate organic carbon in wastewater are key for evaluating the behavior of particulate organic contaminants and maintaining the carbon mass balance throughout the wastewater treatment process. This study was conducted to develop candidate reference materials of environmental origin from excess sludge collected from wastewater treatment facilities, primarily receiving industrial wastewater and livestock manure as the main sources. Homogeneity and stability assessments for total carbon (TC) and TOC were conducted in the particle samples following the standardized procedures of ISO Guide 35 and ISO 13258. The results showed that high inorganic carbon (IC) content in particles, such as YJ(500) (IC: 29%), rendered them unsuitable for TOC quality control (QC), as they increased uncertainty in both homogeneity and stability assessments. Additionally, a13C NMR analysis revealed that samples with a high (O-alkyl)/(C-H-alkyl) ratio in their carbon structures exhibited relatively low stability. Through the homogeneity and stability assessments, a particle sample, YJ(100), was selected as the reference material (RM); the assigned values were as follows: 30.78% for TC and 27.94% for TOC, with uncertainties of 0.01% and 1.1%, respectively. Furthermore, considering sample transportation conditions, the safe storage period for the RM particles was determined to be 2 weeks under harsh conditions (at 40 °C). In our inter-laboratory test (n = 8) using the particle samples, we confirmed that the particle samples can effectively enhance particle processing QC and validate a proposed suspended solids pretreatment method. This study showcases valuable environmental particle sample production and evaluation, offering potential advancements in the QC of TOC analysis for wastewater samples.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) provides a measurement of tumor cellularity. We evaluated the potential of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values obtained from post-external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) DWI and prior to brachytherapy (BT) to predict for complete metabolic response (CMR) in bulky cervical cancer. METHODS: Clinical and DWI (b value = 500 s/mm2) data were obtained from patients undergoing interstitial BT with high-risk clinical target volumes (HR-CTVs) > 30 cc. Volumes were contoured on co-registered T2 weighted images and 90th percentile ADC values were calculated. Patients were stratified by CMR (defined by PET-CT at three months post-BT). Relation of CMR with 90th percentile ADC values and other clinical factors (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, histology, tumor and HR-CTV size, pre-treatment hemoglobin, and age) was assessed both in univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Youden's J statistic was used to identify a threshold value. RESULTS: Among 45 patients, twenty-eight (62%) achieved a CMR. On univariate analysis for CMR, only 90th percentile ADC value was significant (p = 0.029) while other imaging and clinical factors were not. Borderline significant factors were HR-CTV size (p = 0.054) and number of chemotherapy cycles (p = 0.078). On multivariate analysis 90th percentile ADC (p < 0.0001) and HR-CTV size (p < 0.003) were highly significant. Patients with 90th percentile ADC values above 2.10 × 10- 3 mm2/s were 5.33 (95% CI, 1.35-24.4) times more likely to achieve CMR. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical DWI may serve to risk-stratify patients undergoing interstitial BT for bulky cervical cancer.

Clinical research emphasizes the implementation of rigorous and reproducible study designs that rely on between-group matching or controlling for sources of biological variation such as subject's sex and age. However, corrections for body size (i.e. height and weight) are mostly lacking in clinical neuroimaging designs. This study investigates the importance of body size parameters in their relationship with spinal cord (SC) and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics. Data were derived from a cosmopolitan population of 267 healthy human adults (age 30.1±6.6 years old, 125 females). We show that body height correlated strongly or moderately with brain gray matter (GM) volume, cortical GM volume, total cerebellar volume, brainstem volume, and cross-sectional area (CSA) of cervical SC white matter (CSA-WM; 0.44≤r≤0.62). In comparison, age correlated weakly with cortical GM volume, precentral GM volume, and cortical thickness (-0.21≥r≥-0.27). Body weight correlated weakly with magnetization transfer ratio in the SC WM, dorsal columns, and lateral corticospinal tracts (-0.20≥r≥-0.23). Body weight further correlated weakly with the mean diffusivity derived from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in SC WM (r=-0.20) and dorsal columns (-0.21), but only in males. CSA-WM correlated strongly or moderately with brain volumes (0.39≤r≤0.64), and weakly with precentral gyrus thickness and DTI-based fractional anisotropy in SC dorsal columns and SC lateral corticospinal tracts (-0.22≥r≥-0.25). Linear mixture of sex and age explained 26±10% of data variance in brain volumetry and SC CSA. The amount of explained variance increased at 33±11% when body height was added into the mixture model. Age itself explained only 2±2% of such variance. In conclusion, body size is a significant biological variable. Along with sex and age, body size should therefore be included as a mandatory variable in the design of clinical neuroimaging studies examining SC and brain structure.

Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis with accurate determination of particulate organic carbon (POC) content in suspended solids (SS) containing water is critical for evaluating the environmental impact of particulate organic pollutants in water and calculating the carbon cycle mass balance. TOC analysis is divided into the non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) and differential (known as TC-TIC) methods; although the selection of method is greatly affected by the sample matrix characteristics of SS, no studies have investigated this. This study quantitatively evaluates the effect of SS containing inorganic carbon (IC) and purgeable organic carbon (PuOC), as well as that of sample pretreatment, on the accuracy and precision of TOC measurement in both methods for various environmental water sample types (12 wastewater influents and effluents and 12 types of stream water). For influent and stream water with high SS, the TC-TIC method expressed 110-200 % higher TOC recovery than that for the NPOC method due to POC component losses in SS owing to its conversion into PuOC during sample pretreatment (using ultrasonic) and subsequent loss in the NPOC purging process. Correlation analysis confirmed that particulated organic matter (POM, mg/L) content in SS directly affected this difference (r > 0.74, p < 0.01, n = 24); for POC water samples (those containing >10 mg/L of POM) featuring purgeable dissolved organic matter, TC-TIC was appropriate in securing TOC measurement accuracy. In constrast, in effluent and stream water with low SS (i.e., < ∼5 mg/L) and high IC (> 70 %) contents, the TOC measurement ratios (TC-TIC/NPOC) of both methods were similar, between 0.96 and 1.08, suggesting that NPOC is appropriate for improving precision. Our results provide useful basic data to establish the most reliable TOC analysis method considering SS contents and its properties along with the matrix characteristics of the sample.

RESUMO

Ferroptosis can be induced by inhibiting antioxidant enzymes GPX4 or system Xc-, increased intracellular iron concentrations, and lipid peroxidation. Recently, it has been suggested that ferroptosis can be an effective way to induce cancer cell death, although the specific relevance and mechanism of ferroptosis have not been fully elucidated. Here, we investigated the anticancer effects of ferroptosis inducers erastin and RSL3 on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. RSL3 induced cell death more effectively in NSCLC cells than erastin, with limited cytotoxicity in BEAS-2B normal bronchial epithelial cells. The sensitivity of NSCLC cells to RSL3 induced death was dependent on GPX4 expression levels; the effect of RSL3 was reversed by ferrostatin-1 (a ferroptosis inhibitor) but not by Z-VAD-FMK, chloroquine, bafilomycin A1, or necrostatin-1. RSL3 induced ferroptosis by promoting lipid peroxidation, elevating intracellular LIP concentration and ROS level, and blocking GSH-to-GSSH conversion through the inhibition of GPX4 and induction of Nrf2/HO1. Furthermore, RSL3 induced autophagosomes but disrupted the formation of autolysosomes with lysosomal membrane destabilization. GPX4 knockdown had a similar effect on ferroptosis phenotypes as RSL3. Taken together, RSL3-induced ferroptosis depends on the regulation of GPX4-Nrf2/HO1 in NSCLC cells. These results may be useful in predicting the ferroptosis response in NSCLC as well as drug resistant cancer cells.

BACKGRUOUND: G protein-coupled receptor 40 (GPR40) is a key molecule in diabetes and fatty liver, but its role in endothelial dysfunction remains unclear. Our objective in this study was to determine whether GPR40 agonists protect endothelial cells against palmitatemediated oxidative stress. METHODS: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were used to investigate effects of various GPR40 agonists on vascular endothelium. RESULTS: In HUVECs, AM1638, a GPR40-full agonist, enhanced nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) translocation to the nucleus and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression, which blocked palmitate-induced superoxide production. Those antioxidant effects were not detected after treatment with LY2922470 or TAK875, GPR40-partial agonists, suggesting that GPR40 regulates reactive oxygen species (ROS) removal in a ligand-dependent manner. We also found that palmitate-induced CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein expression; X-box binding protein-1 splicing, nuclear condensation, and fragmentation; and caspase-3 cleavage were all blocked in an NRF2-dependent manner after AM1638 treatment. Both LY2922470 and TAK875 also improved cell viability independent of the NRF2/ROS pathway by reducing palmitate-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress and nuclear damage. GPR40 agonists thus have beneficial effects against palmitate in HUVECs. In particular, AM1638 reduced palmitate-induced superoxide production and cytotoxicity in an NRF2/HO-1 dependent manner. CONCLUSION: GPR40 could be developed as a good therapeutic target to prevent or treat cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis.

Purpose: Chronic lower back pain (LBP) is a major global health concern. Pharmacopuncture has been widely used to treat LBP in Korea; however, randomized clinical trials (RCT) or active control have not been conducted to evaluate its effectiveness. Therefore, this RCT aimed to compare the effectiveness of pharmacopuncture and physical therapy (PT) for the treatment of chronic LBP. Patients and Methods: A two-arm, parallel, and multicenter RCT was conducted at four hospitals of Korean medicine. Participants with chronic LBP were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio using block randomization to undergo 10 sessions of pharmacopuncture or PT over 5 weeks and followed up for 25 weeks. The numerical rating scale (NRS) and visual analog scale scores of LBP and radiating leg pain and the Oswestry disability index (ODI), 5-level EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D-5L), and the patient global impression of change were recorded at baseline and at 6, 13, and 25 weeks. An intention-to-treat analysis was conducted as the primary analysis using a linear mixed model. Results: One-hundred patients (mean age, 49.27 years; 58 women) were recruited. At 6 weeks after randomization, pharmacopuncture showed statistically superior results compared with PT in LBP (difference in NRS, 1.54; 95% CI, 0.94-2.13), function (difference in ODI, 4.52%; 95% CI, 0.93-8.11%), and quality of life (difference in EQ-5D-5L) scores (-0.05; 95% CI, -0.08 to -0.01). This effect persisted for 25 weeks. In the survival analysis for participants with at least a 50% reduction in the NRS scores of LBP during the 182-day follow-up, the pharmacopuncture group showed significantly faster recovery than the PT group (P<0.001, Log rank test). Conclusion: Pharmacopuncture significantly reduced pain and improved functional outcomes and quality of life in patients with low back pain compared with physical therapy. Based on the findings of this study, pharmacopuncture could be recommended as a treatment for patients with chronic low back pain.

OBJECTIVES: To explore filtered diffusion-weighted imaging (fDWI), in comparison with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), as a predictor for long-term locomotor and urodynamic (UD) outcomes in Yucatan minipig model of spinal cord injury (SCI). Additionally, electrical conductivity of neural tissue using D-waves above and below the injury was measured to assess correlations between fDWI and D-waves data. METHODS: Eleven minipigs with contusion SCI at T8-T10 level underwent MRI at 3T 4 h. post-SCI. Parameters extracted from region of interest analysis included Daxial from fDWI at injury site, fractional anisotropy and radial diffusivity from DTI above the injury site along with measures of edema length and cord width at injury site from T2 -weighted images. Locomotor recovery was assessed pre- and weekly post-SCI through porcine thoracic injury behavior scale (PTIBS) and UD were performed pre- and at 12 weeks of SCI. D-waves latency and amplitude differences were recorded before and immediately after SCI. RESULTS: Two groups of pigs were found based on the PTIBS at week 12 (p < 0.0001) post-SCI and were labeled "poor" and "good" recovery. D-waves amplitude decreased below injury and increased above injury. UD outcomes pre/post SCI changed significantly. Conventional MRI metrics from T2 -weighted images were significantly correlated with diffusion MRI metrics. Daxial at injury epicenter was diminished by over 50% shortly after SCI, and it differentiated between good and poor locomotor recovery and UD outcomes. INTERPRETATION: Similar to small animal studies, fDWI from acute imaging after SCI is a promising predictor for functional outcomes in large animals.

Salivary gland tumors occur in about 3% of the head and neck tumors, and among the salivary gland tumors, parotid gland tumor occurs in about 80%. Because of its low frequency and small cases, it is hard to establish the epidemiologic characteristics of the tumors. This study was performed retrospectively from February 1987 to August 2010. There were 95 male, and 76 female patients. Most of the patients complained of the painless and progressively enlarged mass in the preauricular area. Peak incidence of benign parotid gland tumor was at the fifth decade of life. In the malignant tumors, peak age in males was the eighth decade, and peak age in females was from the third to the fifth decade of life, which was relatively younger and has a broad range of spectrum. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign tumor of the 93 cases (61.6%) followed by Warthin tumor, occurring in 20 cases (13.2%). Squamous cell carcinoma, reported in 6 cases (30%), is the most frequent. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the second leading tumor. In conclusion, parotid gland tumor incidence was found to be higher in males. Pleomorphic adenoma was the most commonly encountered type of parotid gland neoplasms, which is in agreement with findings from all of the published literature from all over world. In contrast to most of the previous studies, squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent malignant tumor found. Based on the data in this study, it has significant clinical respect and is helpful in the management of parotid gland tumors in Orientals.

In daily life, many people use large amounts of personal care products (PCPs) on a regular basis. For determining the risk to consumers, product usage amount, frequency of use, and co-use patterns are essential information. In this study, the PCP usage patterns of Korean consumers were analyzed, and the data were used to develop a probabilistic risk assessment. A web-based questionnaire was used to evaluate the PCP usage patterns of consumers. A model developed by Crème Global in conjunction with the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials was used to measure the systemic exposure to PCP ingredients. The use rates of 10 PCP family are compared with reported values obtained for populations in California and Switzerland which showed some distinct characteristics of Korean consumers. The co-use combinations of the 10 families of products frequently used by consumers were analyzed in an attempt to calculate aggregate exposure. Seven ingredients were selected and the aggregate risk assessment were performed based on bootstrapping analysis. The probability of the Hazard Quotient of all seven ingredients exceeding 1 was zero. The data of the usage patterns of Korean consumers reported here will be of value in developing more precise aggregate exposure risk analysis.
