RESUMO

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) exhibit unique characteristics such as facile color tunability, pure color emission with extremely narrow bandwidths, high luminescence efficiency, and high photostability. In addition, quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) feature bright electroluminescence, low turn-on voltage, and ultrathin form factor, making them a promising candidate for next-generation displays. To achieve the overarching goal of the full-color display based on the electroluminescence of QDs, however it is essential to enhance the performance of QLEDs further for each color (e.g., red, green, and blue; RGB) and develop novel techniques for patterning RGB QD pixels without cross-contamination. Here, we present state-of-the-art material, process, and device technologies for full-color QLED-based displays. First, we highlight recent advances in the development of efficient red-, green-, and blue-monochromatic QLEDs. In particular, we focus on the progress of heavy-metal-free QLEDs. Then, we describe patterning techniques for individual RGB QDs to fabricate pixelated displays. Finally, we briefly summarize applications of such QLEDs, presenting the possibility of full-color QLED-based displays.

RESUMO

Pd is one of the most effective catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate, a valuable liquid product, at low overpotential. However, the intrinsically high CO affinity of Pd makes the surface vulnerable to CO poisoning, resulting in rapid catalyst deactivation during CO2 electroreduction. Herein, we utilize the interaction between metals and metal-organic frameworks to synthesize atomically dispersed Au on tensile-strained Pd nanoparticles showing significantly improved formate production activity, selectivity, and stability with high CO tolerance. We found that the tensile strain stabilizes all reaction intermediates on the Pd surface, whereas the atomically dispersed Au selectively destabilizes CO* without affecting other adsorbates. As a result, the conventional COOH* versus CO* scaling relation is broken, and our catalyst exhibits 26- and 31-fold enhancement in partial current density and mass activity toward electrocatalytic formate production with over 99% faradaic efficiency, compared to Pd/C at -0.25 V versus RHE.

RESUMO

Flexible and stretchable supercapacitors (FS-SCs) are promising energy storage devices for wearable electronics due to their versatile flexibility/stretchability, long cycle life, high power density, and safety. Transition metal compounds (TMCs) can deliver a high capacitance and energy density when applied as pseudocapacitive or battery-like electrode materials owing to their large theoretical capacitance and faradaic charge-storage mechanism. The recent development of TMCs (metal oxides/hydroxides, phosphides, sulfides, nitrides, and selenides) as electrode materials for FS-SCs are discussed here. First, fundamental energy-storage mechanisms of distinct TMCs, various flexible and stretchable substrates, and electrolytes for FS-SCs are presented. Then, the electrochemical performance and features of TMC-based electrodes for FS-SCs are categorically analyzed. The gravimetric, areal, and volumetric energy density of SC using TMC electrodes are summarized in Ragone plots. More importantly, several recent design strategies for achieving high-performance TMC-based electrodes are highlighted, including material composition, current collector design, nanostructure design, doping/intercalation, defect engineering, phase control, valence tuning, and surface coating. Integrated systems that combine wearable electronics with FS-SCs are introduced. Finally, a summary and outlook on TMCs as electrodes for FS-SCs are provided.

RESUMO

The all-on-4 concept, which is used to rehabilitate edentulous patients, can present with mechanical complications such as screw loosening and fracture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress patterns induced in the prosthetic screws by the different prosthetic screw and abutment designs in the all-on-4 concept using finite element analysis. Von Mises stress values on 6 groups of each screw type, including short and narrow screw, short abutment; short and wide screw, short abutment; long and wide screw, short abutment; short and narrow screw, long abutment; short and wide screw, long abutment; and long and wide screw, long abutment, were compared under a cantilever loading of 200 N that was applied on the farther posterior to the position of the connection between the distal implant and the metal framework. Posterior prosthetic screws showed higher stress values than anterior prosthetic screws. The stress values in posterior prosthetic screws decreased as the length and diameter increased. In conclusion, the long and wide screw design offers advantages in stress distribution when compared with the short and narrow design.

RESUMO

This study evaluated the mechanical performance of a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-based composite, consisting of hydroxyapatite and natural fibers, mimicking the mechanical properties of real bone. The effect of natural nanofibers on the cutting force of the composite was evaluated for suitability in surgical training. Although hydroxyapatite has been extensively studied in bone-related applications, the exploration of epoxy-based composites incorporating both hydroxyapatite and CNC represents a novel approach. The evaluation involved a load cell with an oscillating saw. The uniform distribution of CNCs within the composite was assessed using 3D X-ray imaging. The cutting force was found to be 4.005 ± 0.5469 N at a feed rate of 0.5 mm/s, comparable to that required when cutting real bone with the osteon at 90°. The 90-degree orientation of the osteon aligns with the cutting direction of the oscillating saw when performing knee replacements on the tibia and femur bones. The addition of CNCs resulted in changes in fracture toughness, leading to increased material fragmentation and surface irregularities. Furthermore, the change in the cutting force with depth was similar to that of real bone. The developed composite material enables bone-cutting surgeries using bioceramics and natural fibers without the risks associated with cadavers or synthetic fibers. Mold-based computed tomography data allows for the creation of various bone forms, enhancing skill development for surgeons.

RESUMO

In this study, self-assembled halide perovskite quantum wire bundles (QWBs)/quantum dots (QDs) are fabricated using a room temperature-based formation method. The one-dimensional (1D) perovskite-based QWB structures incorporate zero-dimensional QDs within a composite quantum structure. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that quantum wires with diameters ranging from tens of nanometers to approximately 200 nm maintain a single-crystal atomic arrangement in a bundle form. Conversely, QDs are uniformly distributed within the single-phase wire and appear as black dots < 10 nm. Photoluminescence analysis identifies the multiband characteristics of the emissions. The 420-440 nm band is attributed to 1D QWB, whereas the peak appearing in the 530-550 nm range corresponds to lead halide PbBr2 QDs. Thus, the proposed self-assembled 1D QWB/QD composite structure exhibits novel multiband physical properties in the 420-440 and 530-550 nm bands; it offers new opportunities for designing materials with potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

RESUMO

Several composite materials are being investigated as reinforcement fillers for surgery simulations. This study presents an artificial composite material with properties similar to those of the human bone, which may be used in surgery simulations. Moreover, considering the potential toxicity of debris generated during sawing, a safe epoxy-based composite material was synthesized using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and bioceramics (i.e., hydroxyapatite, Yttria stabilized zirconia oxide, Zirconia oxide), which were used to mimic the stiffness of human bone. To examine the change in mechanical properties according to the composition, 1, 3, and 5 wt% of CNCs were mixed with 5 wt% of the bioceramics. When CNCs were added at 1 wt%, there was a confirmed change in the non-linear stiffness and ductility. The CNC-added specimen fractured when forming a nano-network around the local CNCs during curing. In contrast, the specimen without CNCs was more densely structured, and combined to form a network of all specimens such that a plastic region could exist. Thus, this study successfully manufactured a material that could mimic longitudinal and transverse characteristics similar to those of real human bone, as well as exhibit mechanical properties such as strength and stiffness. Bioceramics are harmless to the human body, and can be used by controlling the added quantity of CNCs. We expect that this material will be suitable for use in surgery simulations.

RESUMO

We introduce damage intelligent soft-bodied systems via a network of self-healing light guides for dynamic sensing (SHeaLDS). Exploiting the intrinsic damage resilience of light propagation in an optical waveguide, in combination with a tough, transparent, and autonomously self-healing polyurethane urea elastomer, SHeaLDS enables damage resilient and intelligent robots by self-healing cuts as well as detecting this damage and controlling the robot's actions accordingly. With optimized material and structural design for hyperelastic deformation of the robot and autonomous self-healing capacity, SHeaLDS provides reliable dynamic sensing at large strains (ε = 140%) with no drift or hysteresis, is resistant to punctures, and self-heals from cuts at room temperature with no external intervention. As a demonstration of utility, a soft quadruped protected by SHeaLDS detects and self-heals from extreme damage (e.g., six cuts on one leg) in 1 min and monitors and adapts its gait based on the damage condition autonomously through feedback control.

RESUMO

Solid-liquid interactions are ubiquitous phenomena in nature and industry. Wettability of a liquid on a solid is governed by the chemical heterogeneity and physical roughness of the solid surface and can be characterized by measuring the advancing and receding contact angles of the liquid droplet residing on the solid. To characterize contact angle, goniometry and the Wilhelmy plate method have been widely used. Although powerful, these methods have difficulty characterizing microdroplets, can be cumbersome and expensive, and have trouble handling surfaces with local wetting heterogeneity and deformed noncircular contact lines. Furthermore, past methods are incapable of measuring contact angle in situ during experiments (e.g., condensation). Here, we develop simple yet powerful contact angle measurement techniques using conventional optical microscopy that utilizes focal plane shift imaging, ray optics, and wave interference. We used our techniques to study the wetting characteristics for a wide range of water droplet diameters (10 µm < D < 600 µm) and apparent contact angles (0° ≤ θapp ≤ 180°). The outcomes of this work establish a powerful tool to more easily and rapidly characterize microscale droplet advancing and receding contact angles.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the correlation between bone mineral density (BMD)/trabecular bone score (TBS) and body mass index (BMI), height and weight in Korean adults. METHODS: We enrolled 2555 female participants in their 20s-80s and 1631 male participants in their 20s-70s. Participants with history of previous vertebral surgeries or current vertebral diseases were excluded. Female and male participants were divided into osteoporosis group (n = 136 and n = 31, respectively), osteopenia group (n = 822 and n = 460, respectively), and normal group (n = 1596 and n = 1140, respectively) based on their BMD T-score. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry image analysis and linear regression analysis were conducted on each participant in each group to determine the P-value and the correlation between BMD T-score/TBS T-score and BMI, weight, and height. RESULTS: We found a significant correlation between BMI and TBS in both male and female participants. In the male participants, the correlation coefficient increased progressively from the normal group to the osteoporosis group. In the female group, we observed a significant positive correlation between height and TBS, and in the male group a significant negative correlation between weight and TBS was observed. CONCLUSIONS: BMI and weight are closely correlated to body fat content. BMD was positively correlated to BMI and weight, while TBS was negatively correlated to BMI and weight. Therefore, although BMI causes an increase in BMD, it appears to be negatively affecting bone quality.
