RESUMO

Advances in genomics have expedited the improvement of several agriculturally important crops but similar efforts in wheat (Triticum spp.) have been more challenging. This is largely owing to the size and complexity of the wheat genome1, and the lack of genome-assembly data for multiple wheat lines2,3. Here we generated ten chromosome pseudomolecule and five scaffold assemblies of hexaploid wheat to explore the genomic diversity among wheat lines from global breeding programs. Comparative analysis revealed extensive structural rearrangements, introgressions from wild relatives and differences in gene content resulting from complex breeding histories aimed at improving adaptation to diverse environments, grain yield and quality, and resistance to stresses4,5. We provide examples outlining the utility of these genomes, including a detailed multi-genome-derived nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat protein repertoire involved in disease resistance and the characterization of Sm16, a gene associated with insect resistance. These genome assemblies will provide a basis for functional gene discovery and breeding to deliver the next generation of modern wheat cultivars.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colonoscopy is a useful method for the diagnosis and management of colorectal diseases. Many computer-aided systems have been developed to assist clinicians in detecting colorectal lesions by analyzing colonoscopy images. However, fisheye-lens distortion and light reflection in colonoscopy images can substantially affect the clarity of these images and their utility in detecting polyps. This study proposed a two-stage deep-learning model to correct distortion and reflections in colonoscopy images and thus facilitate polyp detection. METHODS: Images were collected from the PolypSet dataset, the Kvasir-SEG dataset, and one medical center's patient archiving and communication system. The training, validation, and testing datasets comprised 808, 202, and 1100 images, respectively. The first stage involved the correction of fisheye-related distortion in colonoscopy images and polyp detection, which was performed using a convolutional neural network. The second stage involved the use of generative and adversarial networks for correcting reflective colonoscopy images before the convolutional neural network was used for polyp detection. RESULTS: The model had higher accuracy when it was validated using corrected images than when it was validated using uncorrected images (96.8% vs 90.8%, P < 0.001). The model's accuracy in detecting polyps in the Kvasir-SEG dataset reached 96%, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.94. CONCLUSION: The proposed model can facilitate the clinical diagnosis of colorectal polyps and improve the quality of colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral health services (BHS) can help improve and treat mental and emotional health problems. Yet, attitudinal and/or structural barriers often prevent individuals from accessing and benefiting from these services. Positive provider-patient interactions in healthcare, encompassing patient comfort with a primary care provider (PCP), which is often enhanced by shared decision-making, may mitigate the stigma associated with seeing a mental health professional; this may improve BHS utilization among patients who need these services. However, few studies have examined how patient comfort with a PCP, often through shared decision-making, may influence patients' BHS utilization in the real world. This study sought to address this gap in practice. METHOD: Multivariable regression analyses, using weighted data from an internet panel survey of Los Angeles County adults (n = 749), were carried out to examine the associations between patient comfort with a PCP and three measures of BHS utilization. Subsequent analyses were conducted to explore the extent to which shared decision-making moderated these associations. RESULTS: Participants who reported an intermediate or high comfort level with a provider had higher odds of reporting that they were likely to see (aOR = 2.10 and 3.84, respectively) and get advice (aOR = 2.75 and 4.76, respectively) from a mental health professional compared to participants who reported a low comfort level. Although shared decision-making influenced participants' likelihood of seeing and getting advice from a mental health professional, it was not a statistically significant moderator in these associations. CONCLUSION: Building stronger relationships with patients may improve BHS utilization, a provider practice that is likely underutilized.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based programs (EBPs) for older adults effectively improve health outcomes. However, there is a limited understanding of the unique needs of service providers as they consider adopting, implementing, and maintaining programs for older minority adults in low-income communities with limited aging services. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with key informants of community-based organizations (CBOs) to understand implementation and sustainability needs of CBOs within four racial and ethnically diverse Los Angeles County geographic areas. We performed thematic analysis of interview transcripts. RESULTS: Interviews were conducted with representatives from 25 senior-serving agencies providing aging-related EBPs. CBO representatives reported implementing EBPs in 8 domains: Falls Prevention (68%), Mental Health (64%), Caregiver Health (48%), Chronic Disease Management (48%), Diabetes Management (36%), Arthritis Management (28%), Physical Activity (24%), and Multiple Conditions Management (8%). Themes are presented using the six domains of the Bass and Judge framework for factors impacting successful and sustained EBP implementation. CBOs in low-income and diverse communities described unique challenges with tailoring interventions based on local community context (literacy, language), cultural context, and locally available resources (technology, safe community spaces, transportation) and faced resource-intensive administrative burdens through staff turnover, data collection, sustainable funding, and networking. CONCLUSIONS: Serving racial and ethnic communities has unique challenges that require tailored approaches and additional resources to ensure equitable access to EBPs for all communities. We describe suggestions for enhancing the effective adoption of EBPs among service agencies in under-resourced and diverse aging communities serving populations with aging-related health disparities.

Purpose and Objectives: Although considered a promising model of practice, integrating healthy nutrition standards and practices into a large county government's contracting process with food vendors has not been widely described in empirical literature. We conducted an implementation evaluation project to address this gap. Intervention Approach: County of Los Angeles food vendors provide food or meals annually to more than 100,000 employees and millions of clients and visitors. In 2011, the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors adopted a policy to integrate healthy nutrition standards and practices into its requests for proposals (RFPs) and contracting process with food vendors. The policy required all contracts awarded to adhere to these new standards. Evaluation Methods: In 2011, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) began reviewing RFPs for food services for county departments that procured, served, or sold food. From 2011 through 2021, DPH applied a 4-pronged formative-evaluative approach to help county departments implement the Board of Supervisors policy and ensure that nutritional requirements were appropriately integrated into all RFPs for new and renewing contracts with food vendors. We focused our evaluation on understanding the process and tracking the progress of this policy intervention. Our evaluation included 13 key informant interviews, a 2-part survey, reviews of contract data, and synthesis of lessons learned. Results: Based on reviews and subsequent actions taken on more than 20 RFPs, DPH successfully assisted 7 county departments to incorporate healthy nutrition standards and practices into their food vendor contracts. Implementation of the food policy encountered several challenges, including staffing and training constraints and a limited infrastructure. An iterative approach to program improvement facilitated the process. Implications for Public Health: Although the model for integrating healthy nutrition standards and practices into a government contracting process is promising, more work is needed to make it less resource-intensive and to increase user buy-in.

Introduction: Menthol tobacco products have been marketed disproportionately to communities of color for decades. Methods: In Los Angeles County, California, a health marketing campaign, which used glossy visuals and attractive people in appealing poses, reminiscent of tobacco marketing tactics, was created and implemented to educate smokers on the health risks of using menthol cigarettes. The campaign encouraged smokers to make a quit attempt by offering access to free or low-cost resources through the Kick It California quitline and the LAQuits website (laquits.com). A survey tailored for public health professionals and community members from the approximately 382,000 people in the county who smoked menthol cigarettes and were exposed to their smoke (our primary audience) was administered to generate insights about this problem. Survey data were used to finesse the campaign creative materials prior to launch. Advertisement exposures, website visits, and quitline call volume were monitored and tabulated to assess the performance of the campaign. Results: At the conclusion of its initial run (February-April 2021), the "Done with Menthol" campaign had garnered more than 66 million impressions, received approximately 56,000 clicks on its various digital media platforms, and had click-through rates that surpassed industry benchmarks. The quitline call volume for African American and Latino subgroups were 1.9 and 1.8 times higher than the average inbound call volume for corresponding months during 2018 and 2019, respectively. In its second run (May-June 2023), the campaign garnered approximately 11 million additional impressions. Conclusions: Despite having a lower budget and fewer resources than the tobacco industry, the "Done with Menthol" campaign attained excellent reach and offered free, low-cost, and accessible resources to county residents interested in tobacco use cessation.

We examined whether a community engagement approach and jurisdictional attributes were associated with local action to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products in Los Angeles County during 2019-2022. We estimated crude and adjusted risk ratios to examine these associations. Jurisdictions that used an active community engagement approach to adopt a flavored tobacco ban ordinance, those with previous experience adopting other tobacco-related ordinances, and those located next to communities that have an existing tobacco retail license ordinance were more likely than jurisdictions without these attributes to adopt a new ordinance to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products. Efforts to adopt such an ordinance were generally more successful in jurisdictions where community members were engaged and policy makers were familiar with the adoption of public health ordinances.

CONTEXT: In fall 2020, Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, launched a 3-year, cohort-based quality improvement (QI) coaching program to assist Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in improving their clinical management of hypertension, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. PROGRAM: The QI program utilized a cohort-based coaching model in which 5 FQHCs were each assigned a practice transformation coach who provided them with guidance and support to monitor clinical quality measures. These measures were then used to facilitate changes and improvements in clinical workflows and approaches to patient care. To encourage peer learning and promote inter-organizational collaboration, the coaching team hosted quarterly cohort check-ins and an online group messaging board where the participating FQHCs could share lessons learned. Throughout the program, the FQHCs were provided trainings and resources to advance their clinical quality measures of choice. IMPLEMENTATION: To implement the program, each FQHC selected 2 clinical quality measures to focus on, completing a minimum of 1 Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle per year for each measure. Throughout, the coaches met regularly with FQHC staff to discuss progress, strategize on how best to address challenges encountered, and identify training or resource needs for their clinic sites. EVALUATION: To drive implementation of QI interventions and monitor overall progress, the FQHCs reported quarterly on the clinical quality measures being addressed. By program's end, all 5 FQHCs reached their 10% improvement goals. DISCUSSION: This QI coaching program allowed participating FQHCs to build new competencies and achieve measurable improvements in how they managed their patients' chronic diseases. This model of practice serves as a promising approach for achieving sustainable clinical improvements in these FQHCs.

Despite the availability of effective treatments, hypertension control rates remain inadequate in the United States and locally in Los Angeles County. To address this health condition, QueensCare Health Centers developed and launched a team-based hypertension management program that was led by clinical pharmacists and designed to mitigate treatment barriers encountered at the system, provider, and patient levels. System- and provider-focused strategies included incorporating self-monitored blood pressure values into the electronic health record and retraining clinicians to regularly review these values; adding a community health worker to the disease management team; and utilizing clinical pharmacists to assess and titrate medications. Patient-focused strategies included tailoring education materials to reduce literacy and linguistic barriers; providing tailored one-on-one education and support; and providing blood pressure cuffs and pedometers. This multilevel intervention serves as a practical example of how team-based care can be optimized at a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Colonoscopy is a valuable tool for preventing and reducing the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer. Although several computer-aided colorectal polyp detection and diagnosis systems have been proposed for clinical application, many remain susceptible to interference problems, including low image clarity, unevenness, and low accuracy for the analysis of dynamic images; these drawbacks affect the robustness and practicality of these systems. This study proposed an intraprocedure alert system for colonoscopy examination developed on the basis of deep learning. The proposed system features blurred image detection, foreign body detection, and polyp detection modules facilitated by convolutional neural networks. The training and validation datasets included high-quality images and low-quality images, including blurred images and those containing folds, fecal matter, and opaque water. For the detection of blurred images and images containing folds, fecal matter, and opaque water, the accuracy rate was 96.2%. Furthermore, the study results indicated a per-polyp detection accuracy of 100% when the system was applied to video images. The recall rates for high-quality image frames and polyp image frames were 95.7% and 92%, respectively. The overall alert accuracy rate and the false-positive rate of low quality for video images obtained through per-frame analysis were 95.3% and 0.18%, respectively. The proposed system can be used to alert colonoscopists to the need to slow their procedural speed or to perform flush or lumen inflation in cases where the colonoscope is being moved too rapidly, where fecal residue is present in the intestinal tract, or where the colon has been inadequately distended.

In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) expanded its workforce by >250 staff during Fall 2020 to manage the expected volume of outbreaks, which ultimately peaked. The workforce included reorganized groups of physicians, nurses, outbreak investigators from several DPH programs, and a 100+ member data science team tasked with designing and operating a data system and information flow process that became the backbone infrastructure of support for field investigation and outbreak management in real-time. The accelerated workforce expansion was completed in 3 months. To prepare new and reassigned permanent staff for fieldwork, DPH and several faculty from the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health adopted a flexible, skills-based series of medical Grand Rounds. These 16 sessions were grounded in practice- and problem-based learning principles using case studies, interactive scenarios, and didactic presentations based on scientific and public health practice information to teach knowledge and skills that were needed to manage COVID-19 outbreaks in different sectors. The evaluation suggests positive experience with the training series as well as impact on job performance.

Genome duplication with hybridization, or allopolyploidization, occurs in animals, fungi and plants, and is especially common in crop plants. There is an increasing interest in the study of allopolyploids because of advances in polyploid genome assembly; however, the high level of sequence similarity in duplicated gene copies (homeologs) poses many challenges. Here we compared standard RNA-seq expression quantification approaches used currently for diploid species against subgenome-classification approaches which maps reads to each subgenome separately. We examined mapping error using our previous and new RNA-seq data in which a subgenome is experimentally added (synthetic allotetraploid Arabidopsis kamchatica) or reduced (allohexaploid wheat Triticum aestivum versus extracted allotetraploid) as ground truth. The error rates in the two species were very similar. The standard approaches showed higher error rates (>10% using pseudo-alignment with Kallisto) while subgenome-classification approaches showed much lower error rates (<1% using EAGLE-RC, <2% using HomeoRoq). Although downstream analysis may partly mitigate mapping errors, the difference in methods was substantial in hexaploid wheat, where Kallisto appeared to have systematic differences relative to other methods. Only approximately half of the differentially expressed homeologs detected using Kallisto overlapped with those by any other method in wheat. In general, disagreement in low-expression genes was responsible for most of the discordance between methods, which is consistent with known biases in Kallisto. We also observed that there exist uncertainties in genome sequences and annotation which can affect each method differently. Overall, subgenome-classification approaches tend to perform better than standard approaches with EAGLE-RC having the highest precision.

CONTEXT: The coupling of health care services with complementary resources that address unmet social needs is a progressively popular approach for improving health outcomes among low-income populations. Community health workers are increasingly recognized as a helpful intermediary for clients navigating community and clinical services. PROGRAM: The Wellness Center at the Historic General Hospital in East Los Angeles employs a team of community health workers, referred to as Health Navigators, who are trained to link low-income clients to resources such as chronic disease management programs, food pantries, free or low-cost legal aid, health insurance enrollment, group fitness classes, and counseling and peer support services. IMPLEMENTATION: The Center's model of practice has evolved over time, continuously increasing the breadth and depth of services provided by the Health Navigator team. Its goal has been to address clients' unmet social needs while optimizing their health outcomes through the building of stronger community-clinical linkages. EVALUATION: A program review showed that Health Navigators serve as a critical bridge for clients navigating a complex network of health and social services. They actively engage, recruit, and deliver services to clients. Since 2014, the Health Navigator team has connected more than 28 000 unique clients to resources for health and well-being. DISCUSSION: By using Health Navigators to assist clients with community resource engagement, the Center has prototyped and promoted an approach that complements clinical care, strengthening the community-clinical linkages that are needed to meaningfully manage chronic disease outside of the hospital or clinic setting.

OBJECTIVE: To compare prevalence of e-cigarette and cigarette use and to determine predictors of dual use. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Using a countywide random digit dial telephone health survey conducted during January 2018 to March 2019, we analyzed data from a random sample of 6966 adults. Bivariate analyses described vaping, cigarette use, and sociodemographics. A multivariable logistic regression model examined dual use. RESULTS: Young adults 18 to 24 years of age had the highest prevalence of e-cigarette-only use (11.5%), the second-highest prevalence of dual use (3.9%), and the lowest prevalence of cigarette-only use (5.8%). Males were more likely than females to use e-cigarettes (5.1% vs 2.7%), traditional cigarettes (11.1% vs 6.9%), or be dual users (3.6% vs 1.1%). Of those who used e-cigarettes or both, approximately half had also used marijuana in the past 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: E-cigarette use among young adults is concerning because it could lead to eventual dual use of e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes.

Background and Objectives: Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) is the primary and secondary treatment for acute esophageal variceal bleeding. Post-banding ulcer bleeding (PBUB) may lead to bleeding episodes following EVL, increasing mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors for PBUB and predict the 6-week mortality risk after PBUB. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data collected from cirrhotic patients with EVL from 2015 to 2017. The incidence of PBUB and the 6-week mortality rate were evaluated. Risk factors for PBUB and predictive factors for mortality after PBUB were analyzed. Results: A total of 713 patients were enrolled in this study. Among the studied subjects, the incidence of PBUB was 5.8% (N = 41). The 6-week mortality rate was 63.4% (26/41). In multivariate analysis, MELD score ≥20 (OR: 3.77, 95% CI: 1.94−7.33, p < 0.001), ALBI score of 3 (OR: 2.67, 95% CI: 1.34−5.3, p = 0.005) and the presence of gastric varices (OR: 2.1, 95% CI: 1.06−4.16, p = 0.03) were associated with the development of PBUB. Patients with ALBI grade 3 (OR: 4.8, 95% CI: 1.18−19.6, p = 0.029) and Child-Pugh scores B and C (OR: 16.67, 95% CI: 1.75−158.1, p = 0.014) were associated with 6-week mortality after PBUB. Conclusions: PBUB is a complication with low incidence but increased mortality following EVL. The ALBI grade is a useful score to predict not only the development of PBUB but also the 6-week mortality after PBUB.

BACKGROUND: Whole genome duplication (WGD) events are common in the evolutionary history of many living organisms. For decades, researchers have been trying to understand the genetic and epigenetic impact of WGD and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Particular attention was given to allopolyploid study systems, species resulting from an hybridization event accompanied by WGD. Investigating the mechanisms behind the survival of a newly formed allopolyploid highlighted the key role of DNA methylation. With the improvement of high-throughput methods, such as whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS), an opportunity opened to further understand the role of DNA methylation at a larger scale and higher resolution. However, only a few studies have applied WGBS to allopolyploids, which might be due to lack of genomic resources combined with a burdensome data analysis process. To overcome these problems, we developed the Automated Reproducible Polyploid EpiGenetic GuIdance workflOw (ARPEGGIO): the first workflow for the analysis of epigenetic data in polyploids. This workflow analyzes WGBS data from allopolyploid species via the genome assemblies of the allopolyploid's parent species. ARPEGGIO utilizes an updated read classification algorithm (EAGLE-RC), to tackle the challenge of sequence similarity amongst parental genomes. ARPEGGIO offers automation, but more importantly, a complete set of analyses including spot checks starting from raw WGBS data: quality checks, trimming, alignment, methylation extraction, statistical analyses and downstream analyses. A full run of ARPEGGIO outputs a list of genes showing differential methylation. ARPEGGIO was made simple to set up, run and interpret, and its implementation ensures reproducibility by including both package management and containerization. RESULTS: We evaluated ARPEGGIO in two ways. First, we tested EAGLE-RC's performance with publicly available datasets given a ground truth, and we show that EAGLE-RC decreases the error rate by 3 to 4 times compared to standard approaches. Second, using the same initial dataset, we show agreement between ARPEGGIO's output and published results. Compared to other similar workflows, ARPEGGIO is the only one supporting polyploid data. CONCLUSIONS: The goal of ARPEGGIO is to promote, support and improve polyploid research with a reproducible and automated set of analyses in a convenient implementation. Bread wheat is a major crop that has long been the focus of basic and breeding research. Assembly of its genome has been difficult because of its large size and allohexaploid nature (AABBDD genome). Following the first reported assembly of the genome of the experimental strain Chinese Spring (CS), the 10+ Wheat Genomes Project was launched to produce multiple assemblies of worldwide modern cultivars. The only Asian cultivar in the project is Norin 61, a representative Japanese cultivar adapted to grow across a broad latitudinal range, mostly characterized by a wet climate and a short growing season. Here, we characterize the key aspects of its chromosome-scale genome assembly spanning 15 Gb with a raw scaffold N50 of 22 Mb. Analysis of the repetitive elements identified chromosomal regions unique to Norin 61 that encompass a tandem array of the pathogenesis-related 13 family. We report novel copy-number variations in the B homeolog of the florigen gene FT1/VRN3, pseudogenization of its D homeolog and the association of its A homeologous alleles with the spring/winter growth habit. Furthermore, the Norin 61 genome carries typical East Asian functional variants different from CS, ranging from a single nucleotide to multi-Mb scale. Examples of such variation are the Fhb1 locus, which confers Fusarium head-blight resistance, Ppd-D1a, which confers early flowering, Glu-D1f for Asian noodle quality and Rht-D1b, which introduced semi-dwarfism during the green revolution. The adoption of Norin 61 as a reference assembly for functional and evolutionary studies will enable comprehensive characterization of the underexploited Asian bread wheat diversity.

Translesion synthesis (TLS) polymerases mediate DNA damage bypass during replication. The TLS polymerase Rev1 has two important functions in the TLS pathway, including dCMP transferase activity and acting as a scaffolding protein for other TLS polymerases at the C-terminus. Because of the former activity, Rev1 bypasses apurinic/apyrimidinic sites by incorporating dCMP, whereas the latter activity mediates assembly of multipolymerase complexes at the DNA lesions. We generated rev1 mutants lacking each of these two activities in Oryzias latipes (medaka) fish and analyzed cytotoxicity and mutagenicity in response to the alkylating agent diethylnitrosamine (DENA). Mutant lacking the C-terminus was highly sensitive to DENA cytotoxicity, whereas mutant with reduced dCMP transferase activity was slightly sensitive to DENA cytotoxicity, but exhibited a higher tumorigenic rate than wild-type fish. There was no significant difference in the frequency of DENA-induced mutations between mutant with reduced dCMP transferase activity and wild-type cultured cell. However, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) occurred frequently in cells with reduced dCMP transferase activity. LOH is a common genetic event in many cancer types and plays an important role on carcinogenesis. To our knowledge, this is the first report to identify the involvement of the catalytic activity of Rev1 in suppression of LOH.

INTRODUCTION: Pooled testing is a potentially efficient alternative strategy for COVID-19 testing in congregate settings. We evaluated the utility and cost-savings of pooled testing based on imperfect test performance and potential dilution effect due to pooling and created a practical calculator for online use. METHODS: We developed a 2-stage pooled testing model accounting for dilution. The model was applied to hypothetical scenarios of 100 specimens collected during a one-week time-horizon cycle for varying levels of COVID-19 prevalence and test sensitivity and specificity, and to 338 skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) in Los Angeles County (Los Angeles) (data collected and analyzed in 2020). RESULTS: Optimal pool sizes ranged from 1 to 12 in instances where there is a least one case in the batch of specimens. 40% of Los Angeles SNFs had more than one case triggering a response-testing strategy. The median number (minimum; maximum) of tests performed per facility were 56 (14; 356) for a pool size of 4, 64 (13; 429) for a pool size of 10, and 52 (11; 352) for an optimal pool size strategy among response-testing facilities. The median costs of tests in response-testing facilities were $8250 ($1100; $46,100), $6000 ($1340; $37,700), $6820 ($1260; $43,540), and $5960 ($1100; $37,380) when adopting individual testing, a pooled testing strategy using pool sizes of 4, 10, and optimal pool size, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Pooled testing is an efficient strategy for congregate settings with a low prevalence of COVID-19. Dilution as a result of pooling can lead to erroneous false-negative results.

This study examined the relationships between varying levels of depressive symptoms and key dietary indicators of chronic disease risk, sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and fruit and vegetable (F + V) consumption, among a racially/ethnically diverse urban population in Los Angeles County (LAC). Analyses were carried out using data from a 2012 cross-sectional health survey of 1401 low-income public health center clients. Participants with a high level of depressive symptoms consumed 30% more SSBs (IRR = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.08, 1.55) than participants with a lower level of these symptoms. Other predictors of higher SSB consumption included being African American/Black (IRR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.32, 2.05), male (IRR = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.06, 1.35), U.S. born (IRR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.11, 1.57), and using tobacco (IRR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.11, 1.43). Similar associations with F + V consumption were not found. Findings suggest that depressive symptoms may influence certain health behaviors in certain groups under certain situations. Policy and practice implications are discussed within this context.
